Razzie nominations include Glenn Close, Robert Downey Jr. and Kate Hudson

This has been such a weird awards season. With everything pushed back, I’ve forgotten what awards are even out there. And like Kaiser said yesterday, nominations are getting announced for things I thought had already passed. In the flurry of Award Catch Ups, the Golden Raspberries announced their 2021 nominees over the weekend. The Razzies as they are more commonly known, reward the worst movies and performances from the past year. They always have a couple of Oscar winners or nominees in the mix each year but this year, they have a bunch of them, including Robert Downey, Jr. for Doolittle, Kate Hudson for Music, Anne Hathaway for The Last Thing He Wanted and current best supporting actress nominee, Glenn Close, for Hillbilly Elegy. [From Entertainment Weekly]

I’m surprised they are films on this list I haven’t heard of. There are plenty I haven’t seen, but I usually at least recognize all the titles. Of these, the only two I’ve actually watched were Hubie Halloween and Wonder Woman 1984. Both deserve Razzies, although Gal Gadot deserves a nomination before Kristen Wiig. The other films that I’ve heard of but didn’t see were either because they looked terrible or I was warned so these noms make sense. Except Borat, that got so much love at the Golden Globes. I assume the nominations it received are more of a comment on Rudy Giuliani and not the film itself. And certainly not poor Maria Bakalova. I’m still bummed Fantasy Island was so bad. I think the concept of Fantasy Island but as a horror film sounded genius. I wish the right team had made it.

I want to believe RDJ has enough of a sense of humor to have fun with this should he win. Kristen Wiig definitely would. The most interesting nominee here for me is Glenn Close. There is a small chance she’ll get the “we owe it to her” Oscar this year. Only two other people have been nominated for an Oscar and a Razzie for the same role in the same year – Amy Irving for Yentl and James Coco for Only When I Laugh. Neither won either award the year they were double nominated. Who knows, maybe this is Glenn’s year to break all the records and take home both the Oscar and the Razzie. After all, that wig won’t be ignored, Dan.

Don’t forget Sandra Bullock was nominated for an Oscar for The Blind Side and a Razzie for All About Steve in the same year. She won both and gracefully accepted both awards

    • smcollins says:

I remember that! She showed up to accept the award with a wheelbarrow full of dvds of the movie to hand out lol

  2. LightPurple says:

Not only will that Hillbilly Elegy wig not be ignored, it was also nominated for an Oscar for hair and makeup, which just horrifies me.

    • Esmom says:

Oh, no. I am still salty that the book even made it to film, so i definitely don’t want to see it given any positive reinforcement, even if their hair and makeup team was skilled at capturing the hillbilly aesthetic.

I really hope Glenn does not get her long deserved Oscar for this sh^t.

    • Ms. Blake says:

Have you ever watched any of the old SNL skits, “Appalachian ER”? Amy Poehler and Darrell Hammond play an elderly couple and I swear Glenn is wearing Amy’s old wig (and that is NOT a compliment).

  3. Nikki says:

I read everyone savaging Glenn Close’s performance in an earlier column. I must tell y’all, my family is FROM Eastern Kentucky coal country, and Glenn Close was pretty spot on, except nobody had the accent exactly right. I love Amy Adam’s, but she really didn’t have the accent at all. But Glenn Close’s character wasn’t over the top; she was just another tough mamaw. I could tell you crazy stories that would fry your hair.

    • Call_me_al says:

I agree. If you haven’t actually watched it, how can you knock it? Close’s acting was pretty great. It isn’t a caricature, people are really like that.

    • Sayrah says:

Agreed. I have some relatives in a tiny town in East Tennessee. These are real people.

I did love the “I’m not going to be ignored, Dan” reference.

365 Days….the Flash Gordon of softcore porn. nice.

  5. Ariel says:

I enjoyed the fantasy island movie. I didn’t think it was that bad.

  6. LeonsMomma says:

I was actually intrigued about thr Fantasy Island remake.
It was really bad and miscast (I like to actor who was Mr. Roarke, but not ad Mr. Roarke).

  7. Mu says:

I hate the fact that María Bakalova is nominated along with Giuliani, girl deserve every praise she is getting. Don’t push her in this narrative

    • bibi says:

Maria Bakalova was the best! She was nominated in the oscars so I guess this is about ridiculing Rudy. How she kept a straight face filming that movie is a mystery to me.

  8. Noki says:

I always find it crazy when legit talented actors get these noms. What are they saying, shouldnt they give the movie as a whole if it was so crap and npt the individual.

  9. Ann says:

That worst supporting actor section, yesh. Poor Arnold is the only decent one in the bunch.

*Actually Arnold has done some gross stuff too. That whole section is a big gross pile of awfulness.

  10. Dee says:

Hillbilly Elegy was awful on so many levels. There was nothing authentic about those portrayals.

  11. ValleyAnn says:

Give music ans late hudson these razzies please
