New seasons of The Witcher, You and Cobra Kai are coming by the end of the year

Due to COVID restrictions many productions had to stop filming for months. This delayed release dates for several shows and movies. I have been waiting on season two of The Witcher and season three of You. But since we are rolling around in good news, Netflix just announced that The Witcher, You, and Cobra Kai will be releasing their new seasons by the end of the year. Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, told investors that Netflix hopes to get back to steadier productions this year. So while we patiently await the trailers for these shows, here are a few more details about Netflix’s roll out from Salon:

And then the pandemic hit, and everything shut down. “The Witcher” struggled through several stop-and-start production dates (not all of them caused by the pandemic; lead actor Henry Cavill also suffered an on-set injury), but finally managed to wrap just the other week.

But was that soon enough to get “The Witcher” Season 2 out by the end of 2021? According to co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos, who was speaking in an investor video about first quarter financial results, yes:

“What happened in the first part of this year was that a lot of the projects that we’d hoped to come out earlier did get pushed because of the post-production delays and COVID delays. We think we’ll get back to a much steadier state in the back half of the year, certainly in Q4 where we have the returning seasons of some of our most popular shows like The Witcher, and You, and Cobra Kai.”

So not only are we getting a new season of Witcher by the end of the year, but new seasons of “You” and “Cobra Kai” as well! Netflix is spending a crazy $17 billion on content this year and they’re not about to let a global pandemic crimp their style. The company is clearly determined to remain top dog in the streaming wars.

[From Salon]

I have been waiting AGES for the new seasons of You and The Witcher. If it wasn’t for the Marvel shows and Bridgerton I don’t know how I would have fared through the winter and isolation. Needless to say, I am ecstatic about seeing Yennefer and Geralt on my screen. I need the chemistry between those two heating up my TV. I also love the show You. Penn Badgley’s serial killer stalker (he will always be Dan from Gossip Girl to me) is the sort of creepy naughtiness I’ll need after my hot girl summer. With that being said, I am glad that the vaccine and strict protocols are helping the entertainment business get back to work. I am sure COVID made it difficult for filming and put many temporarily out of work.

I look forward to seeing what happens to Yennefer and Geralt in the Witcher. I also can’t wait to discover how powerful Princess Cirilla is as well. I look forward to the antics of Joe in You and whomever he finds himself falling in love with before killing her in season 3. Maybe Joe will finally get caught caught. I haven’t watched Cobra Kai despite loving Karate Kid when I was a kid. My new favorite martial arts show is WB’s Kung Fu so I doubt I’d ever really watch Cobra Kai. I am really excited about whatever Netflix is developing. The fact that Netflix has already spent $17 billion tells me there will be some epic movies and shows coming out at the end of 2021 and 2022. Netflix has been hitting home runs and I am here for it.

I can’t wait for the next season of the Witcher. I’m going to have to rewatch the first season right before it comes out, i think, to make sure I’m fresh and remember the details of what happened. But that was such a surprisingly good show with a long build up (meaning we watched it, thought the first episode was meh, weren’t sure about episode 2, and by the last episode we were like OMG THAT WAS THE BEST THING EVER.)

also I’m reading the Mirror and the Light from Hilary Mantel -her last book about Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell – and every time the Duke of Suffolk is mentioned I’m reminded of how good looking Henry Cavill was as Charles Brandon.

We haven’t watched You, maybe we’ll catch up on that.

I am not a fan of Cobra Kai, but my husband loves it because it’s cheesy and over the top dramatic etc – i think if you were a fan of the Karate Kid, you’ll like this one just for nostalgia purposes.

I started watching Cobra Kai this week, and it is so bad I stopped midway through ep 3. I have an exceptionally high tolerance for bad tv – I’m married to an old school action movie fanatic and we both grew up in the 80s – but it disgusted me. Misogyny, fatphobia, racism, ridiculing looks – what the hell

      • Becks1 says:

I think he loves it because of that. Like because its SO BAD and it does fit with 80s movies, considering how many don’t really hold up anymore. I read when he watches it and once in a while I’m like, WHAT ON EARTH DID HE JUST SAY and my H is like “well yeah he’s an ahole, remember in the movie when he did XYZ” and I’m like…..nope. I think we’re only in the second season and from what i can tell, the fatphobia has dialed down a lot.

If you gave up on Ep3 then you missed the development of all of the characters and those subjects you mentioned. The show is sort of a parody of itself, but one of the things I absolutely love about it is that the characters are multi-dimensional. Many are morally grey and none of them are either completely bad or good. They are are flawed in some way (even the “goody two shoes” characters) and it’s all about the journey.

@Becks you are me. Everything about the Witcher, my husband started watching it and then I watched parts in passing and then got totally into it. Definitely going to have to rewatch.

I too am reading Th Mirror and the Light and really hope they make a series out of that with everyone from Wolf Hall. Also, loved cavil as Brandon, thought it was one of his best roles.

Haven’t seen You or Cobra Kai though.

I was also surprised by how good the Witcher was. It was a little uneven at first but picked up momentum and Henry Cavill found his role – it does well with the quiet but snarky hero-type role.

  3. Bettyrose says:

IDK if I can handle another season of You. There’s only so much I want to watch through the POV of a misogynist serial killer. Unless S3 goes deep into the origin story as kinda hinted at the end of S2.

    Witcher!!!!!!

I thought that woman in the header photo was Benedetta Porcaroli! They look so alike.

Unashamed to say I think I’d like to be in the middle of a Witcher/Yennifer sandwich. But the books were kind of hard to get through.

    • Holly says:

@sizedoesmatter same! They’re both so beautiful, who wouldn’t want that sandwich lol!

I’m excited for all of this. Oya, check out Cobra Kai! I wasn’t a huge Karate Kid fan growing up. I just never really watched it much. But my husband & I love Cobra Kai. They strike a balance between lighthearted (bordering on cheesy at times, as mentioned upthread) & really great, serious character development. I’ve been impressed.

    • lucy2 says:

I can’t explain why, but I totally love it, and have binged every time they release a new season. I watched the Karate Kid back in the day, probably have seen it a few times over the years, but am surprised by how nostalgic the series made me for it, and how well they’ve blended the old and the new.
It’s cheesy and not without problems, but it’s highly entertaining.

      • smcollins says:

Yes! I love Cobra Kai and am not ashamed to admit it. I’m very much an 80’s kid and The Karate Kid movies (1 & 2, never saw 3) are definitely on my list of favorites from that era. My husband teases me about it but also keeps the kids occupied while I’m binge-watching lol

  8. Nina says:

Is there ever going to be another season of Stranger Things? Do we care about another season of Stranger Things anymore?

  9. CanadianK says:

Witcher is so much better than the books! I liked the premise in the books but the relationships were so toxic. Thank you Netflix for straying from those book storylines!
