Regina King in Louis Vuitton at the 2021 Oscars: one of the best looks of the night?

93rd Oscars, Academy Awards

Everything Regina King does is a serve, as the youths would say. She’s really in her bag these days, directing full-length feature movies and Cadillac commercials, getting the best couture and being chosen to “open” the Oscars. One of the best parts of the 2021 Oscars was Regina’s Louis Vuitton gown and her long, continuous-take walk from the red carpet to inside the Union Station venue (I’m including the video below). Did you know that her Oscar date was Aldis Hodge? He’s ridiculously good-looking, my God. Hodge starred in Regina’s film One Night In Miami. As for the LV… I’m not even a big LV fan, but they hit out of the park with this look for Regina. It fit her like a glove, the color was perfect and the structured sleeve ended up looking really elegant.

Maria Bakalova also wore Louis Vuitton, and I wasn’t super-jazzed about this gown. Maria has absolutely been trying – and succeeding – to become the Fashion Girl of the awards season, serving up some big looks over Zoom and Instagram, and using fashion to hustle for more exposure and more work. This was supposed to feel like a culmination of that, like the ultimate princess moment. But it was just a boring white gown with a tulle skirt. Her Moussaieff jewelry was nice. She looked so sad when she didn’t win!

Regina, as always, looks amazing, that colour is stellar, I just don’t like the vertical crystal pinstripe situation! Something about it feels cheap and costume-y to me, and the lines seems to curve at the bodice. I think it could have been amazing without that element. Maria’s styling was on point, I don’t mind her gown – nothing amazing but also not a total flop for a first time.

I love everything else except the colour.

    • SarahCS says:

I love the top half and how it fits her but I had the GFY ‘scrolldown fug’ in mind as I scrolled down, it’s the pinstripes and weird stuff at the bottom that throw it off for me,

I love how Regina looks, but it’s no surprise she always stuns. Her speech was amazing btw.

  3. Lightpurple says:

Regina’s dress looked better in motion, absolutely stunning, best dress of the night.

Maria’s dress also looked better on TV. Here it looks flat but that bodice was beaded in a pattern and was absolutely lovely when the lights hit it.

  4. BrainFog says:

Regina: love the dress, hate the Beyoncé pose. Why does anyone think that looking like a human sized barbie doll is a good thing?

  5. Esmom says:

I like both looks a lot. Lovely ladies.

    • TQ says:

I agree. Love both of these looks and think they both look great. Am surprised as LV does not always give the best red carpet looks. But these are two of the best of the night.

  6. Nev says:

When she walked into the auditorium was so fashion. I loved it better in movement.

  7. Watson says:

Regina’s dress is super awesome. She and her stylists Wayman and Micah have done a stellar job! But i honestly had to do a double take at her face cause it looks super different and pulled to me.

  8. equality says:

I like it. The sleeves make me think of butterfly wings.

  9. Gk says:

Regina’s dress is drama and strength, Maria’s is pretty but my takeaway from this photos is neither is posed well. You know what I mean? Like regardless of the dress you carry or off like Zendaya.

    • Jenn says:

Yep! Especially that last one where the young lady is holding out her tulle like “Look! Fabric!” We are not being *served* the dress. And tbh that’s fine — Zendaya is super into fashion, whereas most of these actors only care about fashion one or two nights a year — but that disinterest is gonna affect how your dress looks in red-carpet photography, you know? (Edit: It’s also going to potentially affect how much a famous dress designer will want to work with you, if that’s important to the actor at all.)

I’m in the minority here but I don’t like the lines coming down. It makes it look cheap to me. Her makeup is on point but I don’t like the dress.

Regina has been wearing unique dresses this awards season and I am here for it.
I thought Maria looked stunning and she’s hit the mark for every awards show. This dress had pearls on the top that you can’t see in the red carpet pics.

  12. NCWoman says:

I normally love what she wears, but I hate ruffles on adults. It was a very spring butterfly look though and I can see why others do like it.

  13. TrixC says:

Not really feeling Regina’s dress – I don’t like the sleeves or the hemline, and the fabric looks cheap and shiny. I’d love Maria’s dress if it had been any colour other than white. Normally I’m not a fan of the deep V necklines but it really suits her.

  14. candy says:

The lines on Regina’s dress are just not sewn well. It’s bunching and folding at the waist, where it should have been taken out a bit. Granted, the tailoring on a piece like this is incredibly complicated and delicate. As a custom LV, it should have been done right.

And it goes without saying, Maria looks like a bride.

  15. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Oy, the scalloped hem, and winged shoulders. I’d like to see her in it with a straight hem, and a lapel neckline (sleeveless)- It would have been a great nod to the pin striping of the material. And sleek af on an elegant Regina.

Edit: just watched the vid, and I agree with those who say it is fantastic in motion.

Regina’s dress was so much better in motion. I was a little surprised by seeing it in a photo (like let down). I LOVE Regina King. I am a fan from way, way back however, not a fan of this severe bob on her.

Maria’s dress was gorgeous sitting down. It was age appropriate as was the jewelry.

My favorite dress of the night was the Director of My Friend the Octopus (or something close to that). It was gold sequins, deep back and fit her like a glove. But I unfortunately have not seen any photos yet.

  16. Ann says:

I love the color of Regina’s dress but the sleeves look too much like wings to me, which is why it looks like a costume. And that’s fine, it’s dramatic, but I would have liked it better with different sleeve height maybe. Maria’s dress is simple but it’s ethereal which suits someone with her age, look and size.
