I’ll give Halle Berry some credit – she was easily one of the “big moments” of what was otherwise a rather dry Oscar red carpet and ceremony. Halle attended the Oscars as a former winner and presenter, and she wanted to shake things up. She posted this photo about an hour before she arrived on the red carpet, in what would be a preview of her new look:

Halle’s been wearing her hair long/longer for so many years, people forget how iconic her short hairstyles were 15-20 years ago. She really did rock some really cute short hair back in the day. But this was not that! Her hairstylist gave her one of the worst Oscar haircuts in recent memory. There were baby bangs and back teasing and full-on helmet hair. It was a mess! But it was also kind of fun, because at least she really went for it, even if her face said “oh God what have I done” throughout the night.
Halle’s dress is Dolce & Gabbana. Beautiful color, but I hate the half-peplum/weird sack of fabric at her waist. And people just need to start boycotting Dolce & Gabbana, the designers are terrible people. She also brought her boyfriend Van Hunt as her Oscar date. This was their red-carpet debut!

Oh no, the hair is so bad I can’t focus on something else
Halle looked awful. Her hair and makeup were horrible. So many ugly dresses on most of the women. I wonder if the designers hate the women.

She looks awful – the dress, the hair, the face … The best thing about her Oscars look is her boyfriend.
I think the current make-up style that goes heavy on eye shadow, but light on liner, makes the eyes look tired. I think she is totally beautiful, but the make-up did her such a disservice.

She looks better than 90% of the people in the room. Dress was okay- should have amped up the make up. I think Chadwick Boseman’s widow looked great- don’t usually like Versace but she looked great, and someone took a lot of care with the fit. She’s my #1 along with Regina King.

I was thinking it might be okay with no bangs. So bad. Also, her face looks quite different to me close up, but I can’t put my finger on exactly what.

I’d argue that her makeup is almost as bad as the hair. (It’s just that the hair is SO BAD, that it’s getting a pass.) Her face lacked color and definition and sparkle. It was her (original) face that was striking enough to pull off any hair. As others have mentioned, that’s no longer the case.
Once, when my daughter was 4 years old, she got her hands on a pair of safety scissors and created this exact same look on herself!

Halle Berry is so gorgeous, it takes a lot to make her look….not gorgeous. And yet somehow her hairdresser succeeded. Those bangs were just the worst.

I’m pretty sure the hair is a wig, but the makeup – especially the eye-makeup – is HORRIBLE. She looks ill, and she is one of the prettiest people around. She deserves better than what she was given to serve last night.

Earlier in the lockdown my 9 year old gave my 6 year old this exact haircut with craft scissors while I was out picking up groceries. It was quite a shock, but it actually grew out beautifully!

I mean… I don’t *hate* it. I like that she went for something new and surprising but I think it would look a lot better if the bangs for half an inch longer.
My family didn’t even recognize her at first, the haircut was so discombobulating. I kept thinking she was cosplaying as Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago but Catherine manages to pull that look off with her different face shape. Unless you’re going for full 1920s flapper, that cut only looks okay on anyone under the age of 7. I didn’t like the dress either. At least her boyfriend is really hot.

All I can say is that background in the first Instagram photo with all the plants is amazing.
The haircut is terrible…true. But the dress isn’t better. With the color and the weird bunchy stuff going on in the front all I could think was, “She looks like she has an abdominal hernia” or a bunch of pink denture Poligrip accidentally squeezed out of the middle of the tube. Just…weird.
At least this was the least watched Oscars, that is as positive as I can be about this.

Worse than the hair is the makeup job on Hally’s face. Horrible. Her eyes appear shrunken in with all of the dark eyeshadow around and under her eyes and also applied all the way up to her eyebrows. The makeup, the lipstick, added with the bad hairstyle, was a huge thumbs down.
I didn’t think it was possible to mess up her face, and yet, there it is. She didn’t think they could mess it up wither, by her expression. She can go straight back to her super cute pixie and fix that make up and BAM, super gorgeous once again.
