Glenn Close in an Armani tunic and pants at the Oscars: looks comfortable

93rd Oscars, Academy Awards
I felt bad for Glenn Close last night. She wasn’t going to win an Oscar for Hillbilly Elegy of all things, but it was her eighth nomination! She’s now one of the two most nominated actors without a win, and has now tied with Peter O’Toole. (O’Toole was given an honorary Oscar in 2003 and passed in 2013 at 81.) This outfit is kind of goofy with the pants and gloves, which were apparently Armani’s idea as a nod to his mom. They talked about the dress on E! and said it was silk and mesh with embroidered crystals and took three weeks to make. I like that she said screw it and just wore pants underneath. Glenn participated in a cheesy late-in-the-night music trivia bit with Lil Rel Howery. She supposedly knew all about the song “Da Butt,” from School Daze, and even did Da Butt afterwards. They really should have skipped that whole segment.

Youn Yuh-jung won for Best Supporting actress, for her work in Minari. During her acceptance speech she asked “how can I win over Glenn Close” and said that it wasn’t a competition because they were all in different roles. She was really endearing at The Oscars, as she’s been all season. She’s in Dior. I don’t have an ID on her costar, Han Ye-ri’s, red dress. In her red carpet interview on E!, Youn said she and Han were like family because they lived together in an Airbnb during filming ,which was sweet.

Isla Fisher was also in Dior. She was in Sydney with her husband, Sacha Baron Cohen, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Trial of the Chicago 7. Sacha looks so dorky in that white suit and brown jacket.

Chloe Zhao was in Hermes and I like that she was rocking white sneakers. She was there with her partner, Joshua James Richards, who is also a cinematographer who has worked with her on three films.

You could tell that Frances McDormand was not into winning Best Actress, it was her fourth Oscar out of seven nominations. When Nomadland won for Best Picture she said “we give this one to our wolf” and let out a loud howl. That was for Nomadland’s sound mixer, Michael Wolf Snyder, who passed away in March.

I kinda love that tunic? Please I hope people will spare me talking about how fantastic you think Frances looks, and YOU GO GIRL!. She looks like an escaped mental patient and if I saw her walking towards me in NYC I would run across the street, looking behind me the whole time.

    • Malificent says:

Exactly. Comb your hair and at least put on some lipstick. I’m also a middle-aged woman who cheerfully goes make up free in public, dark circles and all. But I’m not at the freakin’ Oscars.

      • smcollins says:

@malificent Comb it? How about just *washing* it? She looks like she’s back in character from the film Friends with Money. I love her but, yeah… I know her look is all about being natural and anti-glam, but is a smidge of effort really too much to ask?

    • whatWHAT? says:

yeah, if you’re going to go to the ceremony, at least put in a little effort. I know people would turn up their noses at “OMG – SNEAKERS!” but that doesn’t faze me. sneakers are comfy and are ok with fancy/semi-fancy dresses.

      but brush your damn hair.

I love her, but jeez she looks disheveled.

    • MaryContrary says:

I agree 100%. It’s ridiculous. You don’t have to go the plastic route-but at least pull it together as befitting the occasion.

  2. Bettyrose says:

Glen Close deserves all the honors … but not for that gawdawful Hillbilly thingamadoo. I love her look though. It’s a glammed up version of how I’ve dressed all pandemic. Haven’t worn real pants since March 2020 but I up my above the waist game for zoom calls.

  3. fishface says:

Sacha Baron Cohen out of character always gives me strong undertaker vibes…

  4. Becks1 says:

Ah I was confused about the four oscars for McDormand, but one was for producing Nomandland.

Her look was….not good. I thought Glenn close looked great and so did Han Ye-Ri and Youn Yuh-jung. I think Isla Fisher is gorgeous in general and last night she seemed very old Hollywood to me, with the big curls and the dramatic black dress and necklace.

  5. Watson says:

Han Ye-Ri was one of my faves in Louis Vuitton. It struck the perfect tone, was cool and not overdone.

Chloe Zhao was a historic first. Happy for her for breaking down this door. Too bad China couldn’t celebrate her too.

  6. Thirtynine says:

I absolutely love Youn’s black/navy dress. It’s such a strong shape it gives it a look of distinction. And pockets – give me all the pockets. The olive satin bomber on top is just cheeky. I wouldn’t have guessed Dior.

    • Lucy2 says:

That one caught my eye too, the lines of it are very interesting

    • The Other Katherine says:

Yes, it’s amazing. Beautiful architectural lines, yet wearable and flattering without requiring a supermodel body. And the color is good on her — she is wearing it, it’s not wearing her.

    • Dlc says:

I also loved her dress, and the olive jacket on top. Isla is a beautiful woman, but I feel like her makeup is frequently a little heavy, almost garish.

  7. MsIam says:

Lose the gloves Glenn. And I wish the pants were the same color as the tunic but maybe that would be kind of matronly? I dunno this look is just meh.

    • Carol says:

Glenn Close is always such a fail with her award show looks. Her Oscar outfit was awful and I hated her gloves. She needs a new stylist. I loved Chloe Zhao’s dress and look.

Also, what the heck was going on with McDormand’s hair? She could have at least brushed it for the evening.

  8. Soupie says:

Well someone said something to Frances or she just snapped out of it, because here she looks happy. I don’t know what was going on during the ceremony but she wasn’t even nice to Joel when Nomadland and then she won. I haven’t seen many of the other movies and though I liked Nomadland I’m wondering why it got Best Picture. Don’t get me wrong it was superb especially from an industry standpoint. I’m just wondering. And Joshua lost to the Mank guy? Now I have to watch that to see why.

Oh, and Glenn looked great. She looked a little uncomfortable during the red carpet but she’s such a good sport, and it looks like she’s fun to be around. Would somebody in H-town finally give Glenn her TRUE Oscar vehicle??

  9. C R says:

Waiting for Princess Kate to steal Han Ye-ri’s dress and put sleeves on it. BUTTONS.

  10. Lizzie says:

I’ve always been nuts about Glenn. I’ll say she tried but missed. Frances looks like someone sent her a dress but she couldn’t be bothered to brush her hair. I see Glenn’s vision and effort into her look but I really don’t care for Frances, or anyone, showing up like they rolled out of bed. I dislike when men do this as much as women. Apparently this was the lowest rated oscars ever and people watch to root for their favorites and to see great formal wear.

  11. Sue says:

Frances, at least in recent memory, has shown up to award shows looking like she’s just running out to the post office and she’ll be right back.
On one hand it’s like, come on, it’s the Oscars. On the other hand, given the pretentiousness of Hollywood among all its other problems, I applaud her for not giving a f.

    • Soupie says:

Yes, I think everyone should be free to be who they are, even at the Oscars. I mean, she wasn’t offensive or rude, just over it – or never into it? That was disappointing to even me, a huge fan. I love the way she’s made friends with Swankie and Linda May… that’s just who she is. She and Joel have a place in Bolinas y’all. Look it up. Organic hippie haven for decades. Extremely laid back and counterculture.

If you look up the photos from the Rose Bowl showing of Nomadland, Frances actually did dress up (better) for that.

    • Mac says:

Frances is one of the most well connected people in Hollywood so she doesn’t need to show up at the Oscars looking great. But she should out of respect for all the other actors who have to hustle their butts office the red carpet. Looking like she rolled out of bed is screaming I have more privilege than all of you.

  12. Seraphina says:

Comfy and profession – Very COVID appropriate. That’s how us regular folks dress too.

  13. MF1 says:

See that pic of Frances and YYJ made me realize that we need Chloe Zhao to write and direct a movie for them to co-star in. They’d be brilliant together.

  14. Amelie says:

I love how Chloe Zhao didn’t change her look. She frequently wears her hair in two braids like that and she clearly went for comfort over style which I appreciated .

  15. Mcmmom says:

I’ve always liked Frances, but she’s wearing a little thin on me right now. Please put in some effort to dress for the occasion – or don’t bother to go. Her interview about her son really bothered me because he was an athletic kid and she made it sound like she couldn’t be bothered to be a sports supporter because that’s not HER thing. Sorry, but that’s not how parenting works….we would criticize a parent for forcing their artistic child into team sports, so why is it ok to not support a sporty child?

    • Hannah Young says:

@mcmmom that bothered me, too. Unfortunately, I know a lot of non-sporty parents who are like that. They are uncomfortable with the competitive aspect of team sports, especially because some of the parents and school personnel are ridiculously aggressive. But if it’s something your child enjoys or is good at, you suck it up and support your child. Teach your child not to be unsportsmanlike.

      • Anne Call says:

That’s terrible. My parents never went to my very athletic brother’s games. When my younger son turned out to be an incredible athlete, I cheered and supported him from age 4 through college. I went into it not knowing much about the sports I watched, but I loved his passion and commitment and I happily became a cheering fan.

  16. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I’ll probably get slammed for this, but Francis looks awful. I love her. I love her acting. But she’s making it extremely difficult to continue loving her. It’s as though she doesn’t respect my patronage and she’s laughing at my peasant ignorance. I’m not sure I can watch her now as I’ll be brought to these feelings. She’s screwing herself.

  17. Watcher says:

And the winner for best acceptance speech of the night: Youn Yuh-jung. She was so funny and charming! I bet everyone in that audience was thinking, “I want to work with her!”

Chloe Zhao was my personal favorite look of the night in that beige Hermes. There was something so singular about it – the detail work around the collar/shoulders, the silhouette, and it just seemed like a perfect fit for Zhao. She shone in it – good thing since she was gonna win so many awards!
