Chris Hemsworth’s giant, beefy arms are a wrap on ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

hemsworth thor wrap

This was the headline Disney and Marvel wanted to see: Thor: Love and Thunder has wrapped in Australia. The cast and crew of the film assembled in Australia several months ago, because Oz is Covid-free and they’re all able to work freely without pandemic prohibitions, only they can’t leave and return. Everyone has been stuck in Oz indefinitely and they’ve been partying their asses off and possibly getting into boozy polyamorous relationships. Who knows! But it’s over now, or at least the production side of it is over. I would imagine a lot of people will probably stay in Oz for a while just to continue the party.

Chris Hemsworth posted the above photo with the announcement of the end of production. Can we talk about his body for a second? This is too much. He did too much for this production. I understand that Marvel wants him to be big, bulky and ripped, but holy Jesus. The size of his arms!!

Disney/Marvel’s upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder has officially finished shooting, according to Chris Hemsworth’s Instagram. The movie, which reteamed the MCU actor with Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi after 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, is set for theatrical release on May 6, 2022.

Wrote Hemsworth, who posed with Waititi: “That’s a wrap on Thor Love and Thunder, it’s also national don’t flex day so I thought this super relaxed photo was appropriate. The film is gonna be batsh-t crazy off the wall funny and might also pull a heart string or two. Lots of love, lots of thunder! Thank you to all the cast and crew who made this another incredible Marvel journey. Buckle in, get ready and see ya in cinemas!! @taikawaititi @marvelstudios @jasinboland”

Waititi wrote the fourthquel with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The pic stars Karen Gillan, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Matt Damon, Russell Crowe, Melissa McCarthy, Sam Neill, Sean Gunn, Jaimie Alexander and Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher.

The Thor trilogy to date has grossed $1.94 billion at the global box office. Waititi’s Ragnarok is the highest-grossing installment in the series at $853.9M worldwide.

[From Deadline]

It should be noted that I have not seen one photo of Christian Bale this entire time. It’s possible that he’s slipped under the radar in Australia, or maybe he’s just not into that partying lifestyle at this point. Anyway, hope everything turns out well and everybody had fun.

Yeah, he’s overdone it. I find it EXTREMELY unattractive.

    • SarahCS says:

Yikes. Yeah, this is just weird and look unnatural! He was fine (in both senses of that word) in the last one so why do this now???

      • KNy says:

I liked him best in the remake of the Ghostbusters when he was kind of nerdy and wore glasses. He’s hot all the time, of course, but that was my fave.

    • smcollins says:

Agreed, but I’m not a fan to begin with of that super-bulked-up look. His body in Ragnarok was on-point, though! Just the right amount of muscle (by superhero standards anyway) without looking disproportionate. That being said, however, I’m really looking forward to seeing this. I’m a total Marvel movies/series super fan and I’m super excited for this next installment!

    • The Hench says:

Yeah. When your arms are bigger than your thighs…no bueno imo.

    • Kebbie says:

It’s gross. Isn’t he doing a Hulk Hogan movie or something? Maybe that’s why he went so overboard. And I mean it’s not possible to look like that naturally, is it? He’s got to be juicing.

      • Jellybean says:

I thought he was going to stay as fat Thor. I am sure I heard that in an interview after Endgame was released. I also recall Chris saying he would have to get bigger than ever to play Hulk Hogan, so my guess is that this body was his choice, not Marvel’s.

      • Courtney B says:

Yeah it’s because of the Hogan bio. He’s posted about getting bigger for it before. He was never this big for Thor.

    • Jellybean says:

I find it unattractive too. I know an osteopath who can’t treat body builders because it makes her physically sick to touch them.

    • Lurry says:

He’s bulking to play Hulk Hogan in a new Netflix film thats coming up soon.

    • MF1 says:

Yeah, me too. And he needs to lay off the steroids. That shit is not good for your health.

    • Merricat says:

Agreed. He looks like an action dolly.

    • lucy2 says:

      I agree, it’s ridiculous.
I don’t find that super bulked up, can’t put my arms down look very attractive either.

    • betsyh says:

      Me too Snuffles.

  2. L84Tea says:

That’s a really interesting cast. Melissa McCarthy? Matt Damon? Sam Neill? Christian Bale? And Natalie Portman is back!?! I had no idea. I’m a total Marvel & DC nerd, so I’m really looking forward to this.

And on another note, the depressing feeling of utter jealousy I felt inside at the words “Covid-free”. Sigh…

    • Lightpurple says:

Matt Damon and Sam Neill were in Ragnarok as theater actors. Neill played Odin and Damon was Loki in a play they performed of Loki’s death fighting the elves in Dark World. Luke Hemsworth played Thor in the play. Melissa McCarthy is supposedly playing a theater actor version of Hela. No idea whether their roles will be longer than the 3 minute production in Ragnorak.

      • L84Tea says:

Oh that’s right, geez, how did I even forget that? Then again, I was kind of ‘meh’ on Ragnarok (with the exception of the Hulk fighting scenes), so I usually skip that one.

      • Agirlandherdog says:

Thanks for that info LP. I love Ragnarok and that little cameo from Matt Damon. I think it’s hilarious. But I always wonder who the heck is playing Thor!

    • Courtney B says:

Natalie Portman is going to be playing the storyline of Jane foster from the comics who became a female Thor (the Mighty Thor). They’ll have to be some adjustments from the comics to deal with the fact mjolnir was destroyed in Ragnarok though. Christian Bale will be the main villain Gorr the God butcher.

      • Lightpurple says:

Thor got mjolnir back in Endgame when he time traveled back to Asgard. He now has both mjolnir and the axe Stormbreaker.

      • Lou says:

@agirlandherdog Do you mean in the Ragnarok theatre play? Luke Hemsworth plays Thor (Chris’s older brother)!

  3. Jane Doe says:

When your top and bottom half don’t match in bulk it’s a bit of an odd look muscle men. https://twitter.com/mahimasroor/status/1399631470990299146?s=21 Mind you, I say this while I’ve lost the ability to wear structured pants during COVID…🏃🏾‍♀️

  4. Darla says:

Ditto from me! I thought the same when I saw it on Instagram yesterday. It is unattractive to me personally, but far more importantly, this cannot be healthy. He could not have gotten that big naturally, I am not buying that. Do these men have to kill themselves on the superhero alter? Come on. I always thought Evans was just right for the most part, he’s big enough, and who knows if he even was able to do that naturally. He’s fine now though. Hemsworth I would be concerned about. In the end, Disney is a huge corporation, and he’s an employee. They will use you up and leave you for dead just like any other employee.

    • Courtney B says:

Evans seemed natural. He just put on 20 lbs of muscle but the underlying physique was there. His trainer has posted the exercises. I love his look as Cap because he wasn’t super huge and veiny. He’s talked about how they film the really physical stuff first because he can’t keep up the weight/muscle the whole time. His biceps pretty much stay the same all the time.

  5. Becks1 says:

Yeah, his arms have bulked up considerably. Wonder if part of that is the pose, because he looks more normal in the pic with Matt Damon?

What are Matt and Sam Neill doing in this one? They can’t just have small cameos again, I don’t think they would go to Australia for that long just for a brief cameo.

    • Cava24 says:

I think Damon wanted to ride out CoVid with his family somewhere warm with a low infection rate, I don’t think he will have more than a cameo in this. I may be wrong about that but his family traveled down there with “philanthropists” (read: rich people) who aren’t associated with the film but are friends with Waititi and Hemsworth. They all just left two weeks ago or so after arriving in January.

Sam Neill is Kiwi, not sure how long he would have had to quarantine on the trip back to NZ or how that worked.

Unrelated but Chris seems to have messed with his face a bunch, too.

    • Lightpurple says:

They are supposedly doing another “theater production” because Melissa McCarthy is playing Hela. Luke Hemsworth is back too. We’ll have to see if their parts go beyond that

  6. Sierra says:

Nooooo, his body was perfect in Infinity War 😭

Christian Bale & his wife have never been into the party scene.

    • Courtney B says:

Thor at his hottest for sure. I don’t think I heard or saw anything about Bale the whole production.

  7. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

He looks like a WWE wrestler.

  8. panthress says:

Chris needs to bulk up to those proportions because he will start filming his Hulk Hogan film. That said, the idea of another Thor film doesn’t excite me nor the 9 year or his cousin who is also 9. Both Love and Thunder and the Hulk Hogan, I can wait until it comes on cable. I don’t know what it is about Hemsworth, but I am sooooo over him as an actor. When I hear of him in a film, I always think here comes another Thor like performance or another Thor version of a character.

    • Snuffles says:

I was never into him. I enjoyed him as Thor and that’s pretty much it. I would be hard pressed to name his other roles.

    • Jellybean says:

He isn’t much of an actor and they are always making him English, even though his English accent sucks. I do like him as Thor and I was pleasantly suprised with Rush, but that is about it.

  9. StephB says:

My initial thought was this Thor had finally gotten off the sofa. When we last saw him in Endgame, he had been through a lot and his body was showing his gaming and heavy drinking. This Thor is back in the gym and has purpose.

  10. intheknow says:

@Kaiser. He bulked up like that to play Hulk Hogan. Who looked like that..veiny and unattractive.

  11. Snuffles says:

This whole production is turning me off. Anyone remember when they filmed Ocean’s 12? It was basically an excuse to party in Europe for a few months and film a poorly thought out movie in between.

I’m getting the same vibe. Cast just partying in Australia and the movie is an afterthought.

  12. Elizabeth says:

Holy crap! His arms are the size of a small child!

  13. Calibration says:

Just saying in Australia you absolutely can come and go if you’re rich and famous. There are no restrictions except first class fares but mostly private jets. They do two weeks quarantine and rich people get to do it in home. Kidman, Julia R, Damon and all them, singers, Tennis players that red head singer? Kylie Minogue. Many of these people have travelled in and out no worries multiple times

Gazillion celebs have been here either work or lack of covid

  14. FHMom says:

I guess I am alone in wanting those arms wrapped around me? Awesome! Yawl can just leave now.

  15. lucy2 says:

    He looks incredibly uncomfortable.
I saw a few photos of Christian Bale there, but hanging out with his family.

  16. Helen says:

“The film is gonna be batsh-t crazy off the wall funny”.
Siiiiiiigh. It’s going to be ‘humour’ that’s as teeth-grindingly cringy, poorly timed and tedious as in Ragnarok, isn’t it? Ah well, I knew it was going that way with Taika directing. (No, I don’t like him at all, I think he’s unfunny and Ragnarok could have done with 75% less “humour”. And from what I hear he was a dick to Tom Hiddleston, which means he went right onto my shit list. It pains me how far apart Tom and Chris drifted after that movie. )

    • Darla says:

I liked Ragnarok, but share your dislike of Taika. I didn’t know about the Hiddles thing though. There must be a clique huh? And if you’re in the sun shines on you, and if you’re out…and in order to be in a cool clique you always have to have some who are out, right? I hate that isht. Not surprising. This dude Taika is a huge douchebag. I smell it wafting off of him.

      • LightPurple says:

Taika didn’t hide it. His sarcastic comments on the Ragnarok commentary pretty much give it away that there was friction between them.

And I think the actors are fine with each other. They’re just on different paths at the moment. It was Hemsworth who reached out with the anniversary photo of the first Thor last month.

      • Cava24 says:

Re: the clique – if you look at IG accounts for Hemsworth and his family, (brothers, sisters in law etc) everything is big parties with people being strenuously ZANY !!! and dressing up in themed costumes or matching track suits with wording across the back and sticking their tongues out and making Shaka signs. Taika was at a bunch of those events over the years.I don’t think they know how to interact with adults who don’t behave they way they do- their entire friend circle seems to be uniformly the same in this regard. Which would make Hiddleston quite an outsider, I imagine.

    • Case says:

Rangarok was a mixed bag for me. I loved the first two Thors and didn’t like what a drastic departure the third one was in tone. I thought Ragnarok had some good moments, but it was cringey how almost every good emotional scene was undercut by juvenile humor. Really strange.

The fact that Tom Hiddleston apparently isn’t cool enough for Taika makes me like him that much more.

    • Courtney B says:

@helen thank you! I always feel like an outlier in being meh on Ragnarok and thinking they went too ‘funny’ (because some of it just wasn’t) especially when it seemed tonally off for the scene but everyone swooning over it. I prefer Thor in Infinity War where the humor and seriousness (and badassery) was way more balanced.

    • cassandra says:

I don’t know how close they were in the first place though? They seemed friendly in interviews, but there were no signs they hung out outside of the movie.

Marvel is REALLY good at selling the whole “Avengers Clubhouse” thing. It does feel like you’re watching a bunch of friends having a good time during press stuff and it really is mostly marketing.

Side note/conspiracy theory: I’ve always thought that Taika purposefully styled Hiddleston to be uglier and greasier in Ragnarok on purpose because he always stole the show

      • Lightpurple says:

@Cassandra, Hiddleston went on several camping road trip vacations with Chris and Liam. Hiddleston improvised the dialogue in The Dark World scene when they steal the elves spaceship based on Chris yelling at Liam whenever he was driving.

      • cassandra says:

        @Lightpurple

Thanks for the info! That makes this even worse : (

  17. Wilma says:

He’s not my type (Jarvis Cocker is my dreamboat), but I love how Chris Hemsford leans into thirst trapping.

  18. Case says:

Yeah, I don’t dig this. I’m not particularly attracted to Hemsworth to begin with, but this is really overdone. I generally go for lankier guys over beefed up guys (unless it’s Adam Driver, who somehow manages to look lanky even when super muscly and it works for me, lol).

  19. Portia says:

Fake, fake, fake. Did I make that clear–lol. He has to be taking steroids and you know what they say that does to a man’s body. Not worth it and it looks so fake and unattractive. The look in his eyes is unappealing and he looks like he wants to do real damage to someone. And the hair extensions look so fake, I can see where they are clipped in. Sad thing is he was really good looking and strong looking before.

  20. jferber says:

The header pic shows that he is shamelessly flexing (I just learned that word), but I love it anyway. Wowza.

  21. K says:

That black and white photo looks like Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall.

    • Helen says:

@K Aaah that’s it! Thank you, I knew he reminded me so much of someone but I just couldn’t put my finger on it.

      Also, I can’t unsee it now…

  22. teecee says:

We’re going to see a huge number of steroid-induced cardiac arrests from all these superhero guys in the next 10-15 years. I hope SAG is on top of this, because those actors will need help.

I’m glad people are seeing the light on Taika. He’s always been cutesy, not really funny. People were letting their attraction to him blind them to what he really is. A f*ckboi with a Kiwi accent is still a f*ckboi.

  23. Laughing says:

Who cares about Thor without Loki? The reason why they turned Hiddleston into a joke in the last movie was Hemsworth whining…. Hiddleston stole his thunder in both movies. Everyone knows that. As for this director: Comes across incredibly over his own head. BTW, I do think that the Taylor fiasco had something to do with the rift between those two although Tom still calls Chris a brother from another mother.. Never heard Chris saying this.

  24. Winterforever says:

    Ick. Those arms.

  25. Mi says:

Yeah His arms are big, yeah he is juicy. Is anyone surprised, most of these buff actors in superhero movies are juicy: Chris Evans, The Rock, Christian Bale (when he went from The Machinist to Batman ), Henry Cavill and so on. Of course they are not going to admit to doing it now but you can’t get that kind of physique in the short of amount of time that they so without a little help
