Brooke Shields has gone through so much recently. She had a harrowing medical ordeal last year after fracturing her femur in a gym accident. Brooke was in the hospital for two weeks after her leg surgery. When she finally got home she got sepsis and had to be rushed into emergency surgery. Now she’s on the other side of her health issues and is experiencing milestones with her family. Her daughter, Rowan, 18, recently went to the prom. The notable thing about this story is that Rowan wore Brooke’s 1998 gown from the Golden Globes! Here’s People’s writeup on this:

Brooke Shields, 56, shared a photo of herself and daughter Rowan Francis, 18, looking stunning in the strapless red gown her mother originally wore to the 1998 Golden Globes. It was the year Shields earned her second nomination for her NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan.

“I thought it was a special night when I was nominated for a Golden Globe and wore this dress in 1998, but nothing could have prepared me to see my daughter wearing it to her prom,” Shields wrote in the Instagram caption Saturday. “Proud mama!”

She shares daughters Rowan and Grier Hammond, 15, with screenwriter husband Chris Henchy, 57, whom she married in 2001. The family lives together in New York City.

Rowan is the same daughter who smacked Brooke in the face with her purse for a TikTok challenge, but that was a year ago and I’m sure it’s long forgotten. (I would be mentioning it up for guilt purposes still, but only when I needed to bring out the big guns.) I love that Rowan wore her mom’s dress from 23 years ago, that’s incredible. Plus the dress is killer. I wonder if the shawl was still around too and if Rowan chose not to wear it. I assume Brooke lent her that Hermes purse too, that looks like a classic.

Meanwhile Jennie Garth made her daughter Lola’s prom dress based on a drawing Lola made. Jennie wrote that she was proud because it was the first dress she made and it turned out so well. It did! I’m including the Instagram with photos below. My prom dress was made by a seamstress to my specifications. My mom can sew but I appreciate that she wasn’t that ambitious about it. I have so many memories of prom. My son’s first prom was this year and it was special for me to see him go to that. They grow up so incredibly fast! I’m not looking forward to him leaving the house but we still have another year.

My grandmother made my prom dress (yellow silk 1920s style dress). It fit like a glove, was my style, and was the most unique dress at the prom!

Love this! My mom made my junior year prom dress and a seamstress made my senior year prom dress. Was fun to be a bit different.

    • Yup, Me says:

Same here. My mother is a seamstress and used to design wedding dresses (and many other things) before she had me. For my Junior and Senior proms, I designed my outfits and my mother made them (I designed and made my jewelry).

Then, for my wedding, my mother and I both designed my dress and she made it. I designed and made my fabric flower bouquet and the fascinator I wore.

All of that was a lot more fun and special to me than buying off the rack.

Attending prom brings back so many memories. Babies be growing up!

Rowan looks lovely in Brooke’s red dress. Lola looks great as well – good job Jennie!

p.s. but for the different colored dresses, Rowan and Lola look like they could be twins.

So much I love about Brooke! I forgot about Andre! She went through so much in her life. Happy that she’s happy. And omg she looks incredible!

Jenni Garth I Have no real time for. She and that Tori. Ugh

  4. Mcmmom says:

Are you sure that is the 2012 Globes? She and Agassi were long since divorced – maybe that’s from 1992?

    • MsIam says:

That’s what I was thinking too. She looks much younger in that picture, like she’s still in her twenties so 1992 would have been about right.

    • Mcmmom says:

I looked it up – that picture was taken in 1999, not 2012 (when she was married to someone else and had kids).

Lela Rachon’s daughter wore the dress her mother wore to the Waiting to Exhale premiere. It looked similar – red, strapless silk dress.

    • incognito08 says:

I was just getting ready to note Lela Rochon’s daughter wore her red carpet gown from the Waiting to Exhale premiere too. She looked beautiful and the gown was timeless.

My prom dress had been passes down three generations! It had seripus Edward Scissor Hands vibes to be honest.

  7. Seraphina says:

Love Brooke’s dress on her daughter. As for Garth’s daughter and the picture (young man included) I will keep my comments to myself because I will show my age. Nice dress she made. That is all I have on that one.

  8. Esmom says:

My mom made my prom dress in 1985. She did a great job as she did with everything she sewed, especially my Barbies’ entire wardrobe. But my color choice is regrettable, sort of an aqua green-blue. The one friend in our group who wore black, which we all thought was radical, lol, is the only one who doesn’t look like a stereotypical 80s mess.

It would have been cool if Brooke’s daughter had worn the shawl.

  9. LeonsMomma says:

They look great! And I get a kick that kids are still doing wrist corsages!!!

  10. BeanieBean says:

Looks like a lot of parents attending prom & Brooke’s daughter’s do. Is that typical nowadays? I have no idea (no kids).

    • minx says:

It could be the pre-prom picture taking. The kids assemble for their parents to snap photos, usually just before they go off for the prom. We did that for our daughter.

      • BeanieBean says:

At the venue, though? I thought picture taking happened at home; plus, the parents are all dress for prom, too. Curious.

    • Sid says:

I’m starting to think that having pre-prom parties for the kids and their families is a thing with the wealthy/ well-connected? I recall Sasha Obama’s prom pics had her family and showed other families in the background and it looked like an outdoor party setup. Same thing with Lela Rochon and her daughter’s prom pics.

    • Anne Call says:

When my kids were going, everyone had pre prom parties where parents came and took pictures and got to see all the kids dressed up. This year was a bit different, lots of schools seem to have it on their football fields. This looks like a blocked off street in NYC and definitely lots of parents, but I’m sure it’s pre prom.

  11. Lena says:

I don’t think they are at the actual prom. A lot of times parents go to a specific photogenic place where everyone can get pictures (group and individual). That’s what we did when my kids were prom age anyway. I remember when Rowan was a little redhead and got papped all the time during the era of celebrity baby blog (anyone remember that one?).

  12. Queen Meghan’s Hand says:

Lela Rochon’s daughter wore her old Emmy dress to the prom too!! I love this!!!

  13. nicegirl says:

    Awww love this

  14. Savannah says:

Brooke must have been so thin when she wore that!
