Jodie Turner-Smith wore two Gucci looks in Cannes: gorgeous or too much?

Red carpet for the movie 'Stillwater'

Day 3 of the Cannes Film Festival featured back-to-back premieres of After Yang and Stillwater. After Yang stars Colin Farrell (who wasn’t in Cannes), Jodie Turner-Smith and Justin H. Min. Jodie absolutely, 100% stole the show, from the photocall to the premiere. My two seconds of research told me that this is her first time in Cannes, or at least her first time promoting a movie at the festival. She understood the assignment and then some. For the red carpet premiere, Jodie wore this epic Gucci, with a long, dramatic train. Dramatic trains are a big thing in Cannes, because if you’re a big enough name, they clear the red carpet for you to pose alone with your long-ass dress. Then you’re photographed walking up the steps with the train. Jodie did it all and she looked amazing. The only very minor quibble is that I think, on the whole, the necklace was probably one piece too many.

Red carpet for the movie 'Stillwater'

Here’s Jodie’s Gucci look at the photocall earlier in the day. This is perfection on her. One of my favorite looks on Jodie of all time.

"After Yang" Photocall - The 74th Annual Cannes Film Festival

Matt Damon attended the Stillwater premiere without his wife. I don’t even think Luciana is there, in Cannes? In the old days, Matt would have brought Lucy and the kids and they would have done the carpet and then rented a yacht for a week to have some fun. Instead, we get Matt posing with his French costar Camille Cottin, who looks like a young Marlee Matlin. She was laughing and smiling up at him in a lot of photos. That’s all I’ll say. I don’t know the woman!

Bonus Chiara Ferragni, for no other reason than I thought she was Chiara Mastroianni and I only realized my mistake after I downloaded the damn photo. She wore a custom Giambattista Valli which also had a long train.

I hate the first one, but I love the second one. It’s giving me warrior princess vibes

    • Pao says:

I like the top but for some reason i don’t like the skirt of that dress. LOVE the second outfit. Indeed warrior vibes

      • detritus says:

Imagine it wasn’t yellow, and the ombré wasn’t so much of the dress.
Imagine instead the bottom was ombre gilded to match her jewelry. like she’d walked through a golden pool

    • Sunshine says:

Same. Love the second look, really don’t like the first.

    • nutella toast says:

I liked the first one until I got to the bottom – it looks like a runny egg. I love the second. Giving a lot of side-eye to how deep Matt’s embrace around the waist is…but I LOVE the black dress with the skinny belt. Beautiful.

    • Darla says:

Oh man, I LOVE the first dress.

    • Killfanora says:

So agree! Hate the Big Bird Losing It’s Plumage look but love, love, love the Warrior Princess look.

      • L4frimaire says:

I don’t like feathered skirts unless it’s a mini, and even then it’s a bit extra. Anyone else would look like a big bird but she has the confidence and grace to make it work. Gorgeous!

  2. Jillian says:

Jodie looks phenomenal! She’s so gorgeous and cool, she can pull off anything

  3. Darla says:

I never use Queen the way people do these days, but seriously, she looks like a freaking Queen. I would just step aside and let her pass. Maybe with my head slightly bowed, fervently hoping no one gets me and her in the same photo because, obvious reasons.

    • Snazzy says:

Joshua Jackson’s tweet about her calling her a beautiful queen is super cute too

    • Giddy says:

I agree! She is absolutely regal. I love that you can tell that she knew she looked good and was enjoying the heck out of it. I would curtsy to her any day.

    • lucy2 says:

That was my first thought too. I don’t actually like the first dress, but on her, she looks like a queen. I can’t even imagine having that kind of presence.

    • kimmy says:

Regal is the perfect word to describe her. The first dress isn’t my cup of tea and I wish her eyeliner wasn’t so heavy, but I can’t stop staring at her. That second look is GLORIOUS though.

I just love that she’s Joshua Jackson’s wife. I bet he worships her too.

  4. Seraphina says:

She is absolutely stunning. As far as the dress, it’s a train wreck from the waist down. It’s like I want to look away but can’t.

  5. LeaTheFrench says:

Not too much! Totally appropriate for the occasion. Jodie looks simply amazing. Both are statement dresses, she pulls them off effortlessly.

  6. Ninks says:

Good jesus, Jolie looks amazing in the photo call. I think I’d prefer the red carpet look more if the cups were the same colour as the rest of the bodice but it’s a perfect Cannes red carpet dress and she looks fabulous.

    • Sally says:

Yeah, I don’t mind the colour of the cups so much as I do the fact that you see the boning in the midsection but not the cups. It needed to be one or the other, but otherwise she looks SO good!

    • JanetDR says:

Agree on the cups, it makes her boobs look disconnected somehow. All white or all black would have been better. The second look is fantastic!

  7. Becks1 says:

Jodie looks amazing. To me that’s what Cannes is for – a dramatic dress like that. Love it.

Matt Damon looks like he is walking the red carpet with his wife – like, I know that’s his co-star, but the way he has his arm around looks like she’s his wife, you know? That’s kind of weird.

    • Northerngirl says:

Really weird. As his wife I wouldn’t like it..

      • Giddy says:

Those poses are way too familiar and intimate IMO. I’m assuming that they created trouble at home. They sure would at my house.

      • iconoclast59 says:

        I’m with you, @Giddy. When I saw those pics I thought, “Uh-oh!”

    • Teebee says:

I think it always a little strange this business creating intimacies Willy nilly project after project… but unless you are long time friends and you know the wife really well, and both you are happily unavailable there is no reason to hold each other so affectionately unless you’re “getting something” out of it… seriously, if that were my husband, at a work function, there’d be a talk about those pics when he gets home!

    • Anna says:

I felt the opposite. It looks like he’s uncomfortable and chaperoning her like a niece or just as a co-star. *She* is the one who is excited to be seen with Matt Damon as she knows it can only help her image.

  8. OriginalLala says:

I know it’s probably all part of selling the movie fantasy, but if it was the norm for my male colleagues to hold me around the waist on the red carpet it would truly make me uncomfortable!

    • Darla says:

Well in one picture his thumb is resting on her side boob, and that would be a no way in my book. I have been buddies with my male colleagues too, but uh uh.

    • lucy2 says:

Yeah, isn’t that odd? I’ve seen a million costar photos posed like that, but something about those caught my attention too.
      I like her dress though.

  9. Lizzie says:

Camille was wonderful in Call My Agent. I’m glad to see her success.

    • sunny says:

This- she is a fantastic actress.

    • You says:

      I adoooore her.
She is also incredibly charming, and his type going by Luciana’s features, so anything’s possible.

    • Libby says:

Came here to say the same thing! Camille is the sh*t! She was sooo good and I loved that show.

    • L4frimaire says:

Love her character. An unapologetic fierce woman. One of my favorite shows.

  10. Merricat says:

Jodie can wear the hell out of anything. I am in complete awe of her.
Yeah, Matt Damon is giving off some vibes here, and she looks smitten. Ugh.

  11. Cel2495 says:

    Jodie is stunning.

    • Aeval says:

She truly is. I think she never looked more stunning than she did when she was pregnant — just breathtakingly beautiful.

As for these looks, they really sum up Gucci for me — when it’s bad, its just awful, and when it good, it’s amazing. The first look here seems like such a visual distraction. It clashes with her, competes for attention. The second one complements her so well.

  12. Lauren says:

Jodie is so freaking beautiful but these dresses aren’t it, i like the fit of the second dress, but the color is meh. She looks best in jewel tones. Chiara Ferragni has been growing on me recently. I’ve never really liked her, but her and her husband have been really doing a lot during the first covid lockdown in Italy and to push for legislation against all kind discrimination. That dress though. Not her color.

  13. Roo says:

Jodie is a gorgeous woman and carries herself regally, so she could wear a sweatsuit on the red carpet and look amazing! There’s something “old school movie star” about her. Lucky Joshua!

  14. Kviby says:

Not into the whip or the normalization of s&m which is usually against women (though here it is a woman holding a whip) but the colours are perfect on her

    • Leigh_S says:

LOL that’s no whip. Its a fly whisk, used to keep biting flies off horses as you ride. Its never used for correction and wouldn’t be much more painful than a feather duster. There’s too much drag through the air with the long bundle of horse hair attached.

      • Cartwright says:

Looks like a broom. i know it is cannes, but c’mon.
Any explanation for shoulder pads? stylist forgot to provide a jacket?
without equestrian accessories it should be well fitted interesting dress on a beautifull woman.

    • Anna says:

Actually, S&M is one of the most healthy relationship frameworks that one can have, if engaged in the correct manner. I don’t have time to do a lesson on this right now but it’s very unfortunate how the BDSM lifestyle has been so demonized where it’s not even a question for some people. Yes, there is bad stuff out there but that’s *abuse*, not S&M.

  15. Moxylady says:

Jodie looked like a goddess come to life. Wow.

  16. girl_ninja says:

She’s stunning and I love both looks on her. I cannot believe these people are all Willy Nilly at Caan though. We are still in a pandemic.

    Nope🙅🏾‍♀️

  17. Mia4s says:

Huh. I have no middle ground. I hate that first dress. Like, I genuinely think it’s ugly. But I LOVE that second one. That is fabulous!!!

Can someone tell me if I need to care about the two women mentioned at the end? I’m too lazy to google but I know Cannes well enough to know that they are either up and comers with interesting projects I might like…..or random models or “models” being paid by some brand. It’s a Cannes tradition! 😂

    • Grant says:

I know Chiara is actually a pretty big influencer/style icon person in Italy. She was a guest judge on a few episodes of “Making the Cut” on Amazon Prime (Prime’s “reboot” of Project Runway with Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn).

    • You says:

Don’t know the blond lady, but Camille Cottin is a very talented French actress, and she’s getting quite famous internationally.
I’m calling it now, Hollywood will see her and use her as ‘the next Isabelle Hupert’

  18. Case says:

I really like Jodie’s Gucci photo call look. Beautiful. She’s such a chameleon based on her hair and makeup looks!

  19. Lara says:

Jodie looks. Ice. She’s a terrible actress though. The Anne Boleyn show is AWFUL.

  20. Kristen says:

I really like the Gucci feather dress, but I think the overall styling is off.

  21. Mina_Esq says:

The yellow in the necklace ties into the yellow trim of the dress, so I dont even have that complaint! As for Matt – his hand seems to be in a place that’s a bit too intimate for just co-workers. Maybe I’m a prude, who knows.

  22. Bella says:

Jodi looks gorgeous in the Gucci with the train! I don’t like the second look with leather epaulets at all! Seriously ugly. I love Chiara’s dress, and my favorite is the very simple but elegant dress that the French actress is wearing with Matt Damon. I agree with everyone else, that if my husband was touching someone like that, that wasn’t me, I think I would start looking for a divorce lawyer. He is way, way too familiar with her–but I love her dress! LOL

    • Darla says:

Well, maybe he and his wife aren’t even together anymore, who knows. We’ll find out I’m sure. Either way I won’t put the blame on Cottin. Hey if she can enjoy that Damon face more power to her.

  23. thecookingpan says:

Ummm… Matt… Is there something you have to show?

  24. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I love Jodie, but no no no no no to both looks. Yes she’s stunning and could wear potato sacks, but these looks are competing and not in a good way.

  25. The Artist Formerly Known as Valiantly Varnished says:

Jodie looks fab in both looks. I loved Joshua’s IG stories post about how great she looked.

  26. Savannah says:

    No no no!

  27. Stacy Dresden says:

    That Jodie is heavenly

  28. K says:

JTS Gucci is flawless . That feathered mess is terrible but her figure is so beautiful.

  29. Sof says:

Stunning! I’m ok with the necklace but would tone down the yellow feathers, maybe in a lighter colour the dress would have looked better.
As for Mat, those pictures reminded me of James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain, it seems like Cannes makes everyone more…affectionate?

  30. Hel says:

A note on the ‘where is Matt’s wife’ thing: I believe they have been riding out the virus in Australia, and it’s quite difficult to leave. It would be understandable he would get a work exemption to leave (and return) but probably wouldn’t be easy for his wife. Also, he’ll likely have to quarantine for 14 days on his return – which you wouldn’t want to make the whole family do.

  31. Carobell says:

The jewelry might be a lot, but that is clearly borrowed from a major label and I am here for it! I love the citrine on her!

  32. Isa says:

Jodie is so beautiful and she has such a presence. No matter what she wears she wears it, the clothes never wear her. I wish I could be like that.

  33. JillyBeann says:

Both Amazing and totally RED CARPET worthy!

  34. Christine says:

    Gorgeous, never too much!

  35. Sara says:

    I hate both dresses.

  36. Veronica S. says:

It’s over the top but very Cannes. I think I’d change the whole bodice to be black to match the cups, though. Create a stronger contrast with the skirt. Love the Gucci ensemble. That’s a killer outfit on her.

  37. godivalady says:

this woman is so damn beautiful.

  38. Anonymous says:

Is Matt Damon separated from his wife?

  39. L4frimaire says:

Jodie looks amazing. Love the Gucci with the Mad Max shoulder pads. Camille Cotton is in the French Netflix show “ Call My Agent”. It’s a really good funny show, lots of appearances by huge French stars, and her character is very acerbic and self centered ; she’s really very good in it.

  40. stephka says:

Matt Damon’s co-star is Camille Cottin. I saw her in Call My Agent, a French show that was on Netflix — so, so good. I binged it.

  41. Lemonaide says:

Matt, that body language with your co-star. I mean, I’m no expert, but that’s pretty, Ummmmmm… Especially so open in front of the cameras.

    Your marriage alright bro?
