Renee Zellweger won’t gain weight, wants fat suit for Bridget Jones 3

Renee Zellweger

I’ve mentioned this before, but I love the Bridget Jones character, and I love Renee Zellweger as that character. Even though I didn’t care for the sequel book or film, I still love the franchise, and I was thrilled when they announced the third film over the summer. At the time of the announcement, the start date for the production was left up in the air, and many people assumed that was because it would take Renee Zellweger months to put on her Bridget Jones pounds.

For the first film, Renee put on something like 25 to 30 pounds to play Bridget, and she looked lovely with the extra weight. For the sequel, Renee seemed to put on even more weight, and ended up looking rather puffy and sketchy. I was hoping for a return to the first film’s weight gain, but my hopes were just dashed. A source just told the British magazine Reveal (story via the NY Daily News) that Renee isn’t interested in gaining weight for the role for a third time, and that she’ll most likely wear padding and/or a “fat suit”.

Renee Zellweger famously packed on the pounds to play “Bridget Jones,” but she’ll be faking the fat for the third installment of the popular film franchise, according to a report.

“Renee will be wearing a fat suit in the third film, as it took her a while to lose the weight last time,” a source revealed to British magazine Reveal. “She’s also thinking about the effect quickly putting on and then losing 30 pounds has on her body.”

While some fans and bloggers are worried Zellweger’s portrayal of “Bridget Jones” will be less authentic the third go-round if she dons a fat suit, the actress has voiced concern over gaining weight for the famous role in the past.

“My body is whacked by the time we finish one of those [‘Bridget Jones’ movies],” Zellweger told the Daily Mail in December 2007.

She went on to tell the Mail how the 2004 fast-food documentary “Supersize Me” scared her.

“I had a panic attack with all the specialists talking about how bad this is for you, long term, putting on that much weight in short periods of time and they’re all saying, ‘You must stop this now or you’re going to die.’ “

[From the NY Daily News]

Oh for goodness sake, Renee. It’s like she never stopped to think that maybe she didn’t have to take off every single little pound she gained for the Bridget Jones films. It’s like she never looked in the mirror and said, “Yes, I am scary skinny, maybe putting on five pounds would be a good thing.” I like her and everything, but I do wonder if she has some serious body image issues. From her too-thin frame, to her trying-too-hard posing, I think Renee has gotten weird.

I also wonder if she’s refusing to put on the weight because she’s in a relationship with Bradley Cooper now, and she thinks that if she gains some weight, it will affect her relationship in a negative way. Maybe it will – God knows what kind of body type Bradley goes for, but I tend to think he would be understanding about the situation.

In one other piece of Bridget Jones-related news, I’ve been hearing some rumors that Colin Firth (Mark Darcy) hasn’t officially signed on for the third film. What’s the hold up? You can’t make the film without Mr. Darcy! The rumors go either way – some saying Colin hasn’t even been approached but that he’d love to sign on, or that Colin has been approached, and is making the producers sweat. The second one might be right on – Colin’s having a little career comeback lately, and many are pegging him for a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his work in Tom Ford’s A Single Man. He might want more money. I know I would ask for more money if I had to star with Renee in a fat suit. That’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Here’s Renee spotted sipping coffee after going shopping in Vancouver on September 13th. Images thanks to INF Photo.

It’s her body and her health, so I can understand her not wanting to gain the weight again but I totally agree with you–she looked the best she has ever looked in the first movie. She is way too scary skinny looking. I have nothing against thin actresses–I know many people (not me!) who are naturally quite thin but Renee just looks crabby and ill and skeletal all the time. Not attractive.

  2. Diane says:

Good for Renee, taking care of herself. I don’t see any reason not to have a slim Bridget Jones for the 3rd film.

  3. whitedaisy says:

She should just not do the movie if she is concerned about taking off the weight and associated health aspects.
    Fat suits are so obvious.

  4. Goddess711 says:

But Bridget Jones 2 sucked big time; how much worse can it get?

  5. tinlizzy says:

Might as well just make the character “scary skinny” since that’s her natural look. I don’t think they can “get” the true look of a heavier person in the face and neck with makeup – it just looks fake, no matter how good the makeup artist is. I understand completely how hard it is on a person to gain/lose/gain/lose weight.

  6. Tamara K says:

Why in every photo when there is talk about a celebrities weight, there is the photo of them with a shopping bag and a Latte?

  7. Jaxon says:

Renee’s face is so chubby I don’t think the fat suit will look fake. I think she won’t gain the weight because at the age she is now it’s really hard to take it off again. She is messed up about her whole image anyway.

  8. Dorothy says:

Love the books, love the movies, LOVE Colin Firth wouldn’t want to see a third without him.

  9. mollination says:

She never cared about her “health” before….and it doesn’t appear she cares right now either given her malnourished frame/skin.

    It’s the coop.

  10. e says:

How about just not making the movie period. Do we really need another?

  11. Obvious says:

I will see anything with Colin Firth. And I want to see BJ3 especially if there is another Colin and Hugh fight. those scenes are hilarious!!!

I don’t like hacking up source material for a movie… if you want it different, don’t use that source. So I can’t say I’d support a skinny Bridget; it’s a major aspect of her character. That said, I’d be more comfortable with a new actress in the role than a fat suit. (I am not a RZ fan, though. At all. I’d like Bridge better British, normal shaped, and not sucking on a lemon)

  13. Lynnie says:

Enough with the skinny jeans! Ugh, they don’t look good on ANYBODY.

  14. hello! says:

I really like Renee–I thought she was amazing in Chicago. I agree that gaining that amount of weight too quickly can be hard on the heart. I think she could stand to gain a few permanent pounds, though. She’s a bit on the thin side.

  15. Tina. says:

can anybody blame her? shes been through the wrigner twice with gaining weight! :@

  16. DrM says:

My husband saw a picture of Renee Zellweger in WHO magazine (People in Australia and NZ) and the first thing he said was “She looked SO nice in Bridget Jones…what has she done to herself!!!??!!”

    Eat a pie Ms Zelleweger!~

  17. Ash says:

Hell, I wouldn’t want to gain it for a third time either?! It’s her body, goodness. WTF….

  18. Jillian says:

I read the first Bridget Jones book and never cared for the movies. I thought Renee had a ridiculous English accent. I’m not suprised she won’t gain the weight again. I’d bet money that she suffers from anorexia.

  19. chunk says:

oh who cares. its not like she is going to win an oscar for this role.

  20. Heavenbound says:

Enough with the skinny jeans! Ugh, they don’t look good on ANYBODY.

They look great on me!!! 🙂

    @ Tamara K:
OMG, I know it! Every single actress just HAS to have that god-for-saken latte in their hand. If they would stop drinking them, they would probably be able to eat a nutritional meal for a change. I would LOVE to see what’s in all the grocery bags of these skinny minnies.

****written while sipping on my yummy nutritional shake**** 😉

  22. Jamie says:

You say 5 pounds but we aren’t talking about 5 pounds, it’s more like 35-40 pounds in a very short period of time. That does have health effects and it’s her right to be concerned about it. She’s skinny because she’s an avid long distance runner. Her body is normal for her sport. Even when she was young, she was built like this. Women are so harsh on each other. I remember George Clooney gaining weight for one of his roles and being incredibly vocal about the effect it had on his health.

  23. Firestarter says:

I agree, let her sport the fat suit, because the movie isn’t going to walk away with a cache of Oscars.

  24. hatsumomo says:

Its bad for your heart to put on 30 pounds quickly but its also straining for your heart to be so underweight. Why do you think anorexics have heart problems? And she does look bad when she is skinny like that. Wouldn’t it be nice if she put on 10-15 lbs? That way Cooper can have something to snuggle with instead a bag of bones!

  25. Dianne says:

It’s harder to lose the weight as you get older, and if she has a boyfriend…

  26. crash2GO2 says:

We all know that the reason Bradley Cooper is into her, is because of her boyish frame. You wouldn’t want her to lose him now, would you?

  27. LL says:

Gaining and losing weight is hard on the body and has long-lasting effects on internal organs. Skinny jeans look good on women with boy hips. She doesn’t need to wear a fat suit. The special effects are so good right now, they could beef her up and you wouldn’t even know it wasn’t real. A friend of mine does special effects for movies. You would be amazed at what is faked.

  28. Andrea says:

renee gaining thirty pounds would just make her look like a normal person. hollywood is so weird.

  29. Dorey says:

Why does she need to gain 30 lbs anyway? Why can’t Bridget be thin?

My vote is for a new and improved Bridget that has picked up exercise, got her dating life in order and is happy. I won’t go see it if they turn her into a pathetic fat loser again…that story line is old.

Renee looks very athletic and toned. I doubt she is thin because she is starving herself. Some people are thin like that because they like to exercise. Nothing wrong with her body type.

Yeah, how weird celebrities drink lattes…99.9% of the people I know drink lattes!

  30. la chica says:

if i were almost 40 i would opt for the fat suit too. makes good health sense to me.

  31. susie says:

she needs to eat a damn meal those movies suck now i loved the first one she is not cute anymore something is not right about her

  32. Howie says:

Love her, love the movies, love Colin Firth. I don’t blame her at all for not wanting to do that to her body- I would see the movie with her in a fat suit OR with a skinny Bridget.

    Ahhhhhh, Mark Darcy………………….

  33. Granger says:

I think Renee is a great actress (Chicago, Cold Mountain), but I am so tired of Bridget Jones. The second film sucked, and I can’t imagine what they’d do with a third.

While R obviously has a petite frame, I have to agree that she’s too thin. I don’t think you can chalk it up to her running: I think it has a lot to do with a strict diet.

BTW, why does everyone assume she’s drinking a huge latte or even a coffee? Considering she obviously exists on a seriously calorie-restricted diet, I’m guessing that’s a massive calorie-caffeine-free herbal tea!

  34. princess pea says:

@ Dorey – That is exactly what I am talking about when I say hacking up source material. Your idea is nice, but it’s NOT Bridget Jones. It’s some other lady, and she should have a different name. (Also, if your movie character is happy, healthy and fulfilled, you don’t have much of a story.)

  35. Nicole says:

What about Hugh Grant? Does anybody know if he signed? I mean, Mark Darcy just HAS to be in that movie, but so does Daniel Cleaver!

  36. 4Real says:

She never looks like a happy camper.

  37. To put on that much weight and lose it again all these times must be hard work and not good on your buddy. I’m not surprised she does not want to do it again!
