Sharon Stone wore a giant Dolce & Gabbana ballgown in Cannes: yikes or okay?

"The Story of my wife" Red Carpet during the 74th Cannes International Film Festival

Towards the backend of the Cannes Film Festival, the A-list models go on vacation and the A-list celebrities go home. Which means that the last few days are pretty bonkers, with lower-tier celebrities and models vying for attention. Enter Sharon Stone. Stone walked the carpet for last night’s premiere of A Felesegam Tortenete/The Story Of My Wife. She got a lot of attention, obviously, because women dressed up like Cinderella often will. This dress is Dolce & Gabbana and it’s a train wreck, not only because Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are complete trash, but also because they’re terrible designers.

Poppy Delevingne also wore Dolce & Gabbana. This dress is so plain! But she looks fine.

Vicky Krieps! I don’t know who did this dress but she’s stunning. I love her. Is she wearing tap shoes?!?

Tilda Swinton walked a Cannes red carpet with her daughter Honor Swinton Byrne. Honor is like “I can’t believe my mother does this for a living.” I would wear Tilda’s blouse as a nightgown and I imagine it would be super-comfortable.

Whoever designed that dress was on a psychedelic drug and whoever chose that dress for Sharon to wear must obviously not like her.

    • Chica says:

This dress looks like 510000 dollar coat Melanie Trump wore to a G7 meeting a few years ago.

    • SarahCS says:

It looks like someone has seen a few too many Tim Walker photoshoots and was like ‘that, but make it a dress’ and didn’t have the skill to execute it.

Also, they are AWFUL people, why are they still selling clothes??

    • Killfanora says:

Awful dress even before the garden fell on it.

    • Otaku fairy says:

      I think it’s a cute dress.

    • YEahNO says:

Sharon either has an inflated sense of self, or the alter ego of a kindergartner on dress up day. Hmmm?

  2. EnormousCoat says:

The dress and the wave in the first photo are hilarious. This feels tongue-in-cheek, maybe? I would have loved that dress when I was five. But this is Sharon Stone and honestly, her attitude with her hands seemingly tucked into pockets, radiates coolness. Just do whatever, Sharon. We are here for it.

  3. Jezz says:

Sorry, I love the Cinderella dress. So fun and extra! I could see Rhianna in that!!

    • Astrid says:

      +1

    • Becks1 says:

I don’t really like the dress, but I like how much fun Sharon seems to be having in it. She’s worn enough plain basic classic looks – she’s having fun in this one on the red carpet, and good for her.

    • Anna says:

Love it but her eye makeup makes her looked drugged out and the spiky Guy Fierei hair has got to go.

    • tig says:

i love it, just because she’s wearing it and its not wearing her. There always is a place for Cinderella ball gowns in my book.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Sharon Stone is making that dress work as in: Right Dress, on the Right Person, at the Right Event.

    • Gillysirl says:

I loved it the second I saw it and I’m not a big dress person. I think it’s the way she’s wearing it.

    • Chaine says:

I adore it. Between the fake romance rumors with the rapper and wearing Cinderella gowns, she is living her best life, lol.

    • Soupie says:

I love the dress. I think it’s really cool and she is such a cool person I read she is a crazy Cookie but she interviews well.

As for her cosmetic surgery, she lives in San Francisco and I’ll bet she has the same damn cosmetic surgeon that one of my clients had 25 years ag. This woman paid $20K and waited almost a year on a waiting list for the surgeon. In today’s money that is $34K+. Sharon looks great and like herself. The woman that was my client, she was 10 years older than me and looked 10 years younger. Very disconcerting. And NO scars ANYwhere. I couldn’t believe it.

    • Green Desert says:

Yeah, it’s Cannes (inherently kind of tacky) and it’s the goddess Sharon Stone. Perfect dress for the occasion and the wearer.

  4. Ginny says:

Not overlooking the issues with D&G (or that this gown wouldn’t be to my personal taste, regardless of designer), it always makes me happy when you can tell that a woman simply feels gorgeous and amazing — and you can tell that Sharon does here.

    • Darla says:

That’s true. But I usually like her style. This is a weird one for her I think?

      • Thirtynine says:

Yeah, I agree, not her usual thing. She’s gone into it clearly determined to have a blast. You can imagine her sparkling and playing it up for the cameras, like everyone is in on the joke with her. I don’t love the dress, but I love how the dress makes her feel. Tilda Swinton’s white shirt- is that puffy bat wings for sleeves? Her blue suit is cool. Chalamet’s outfit, that’s a no from me.

      • LaraW” says:

I remember when I was a teenager at the library, looking at the Serious Novels that I thought I should start reading as I transitioned to being a Grown Up Responsible Adult (don’t ask, I set a lot of arbitrary benchmarks for myself). The point is, I looked at this other older lady whose library bag was full of romances. She looked at me, I don’t know was expression was on my face but she just smiled and said, “when you’re my age and have already read all the classics, you go back to reading whatever you want— because what’s the point of reading if it’s not fun?”

This dress feels like the equivalent of that.

  5. Jayna says:

    Yikes is right.

  6. Jayna says:

Yikes is right. From the neck up, she’s stunning, though. The gown is horrible.

  7. tempest prognosticator says:

Tilda looks fantastic in the Haider Ackerman.

    • TeamMeg says:

Getting serious Grace Jones vibes from Tilda Swinton. Epic and iconic is right!

    • MF1 says:

THAT BLUE SUIT. She looks incredible and the tailoring of the suit is on point.

      • BothSidesNow says:

I saw the suit on Tilda yesterday and I thought she looked incredible! She certainly has some major wins in her history and this is one of them!

  8. Merricat says:

Looks like Vicky is wearing spats!
Sharon’s dress looks like 8th-grade me’s idea of couture, lol.
Tilda’s blue suit is pretty great.

  9. Amy T says:

I thought of those Barbie cakes where it’s doll from the waist up and cake skirt from the waist down. She does look happy.

  10. Golly Gee says:

Carrie Bradshaw would beat Sharon Stone unconscious with the heel of a Manolo Blahnik to have that dress.

  11. Southern Fried says:

Sharon’s dress… ick, D&G fail. Several years Siriano did a a gown with cascading flowers that is gorgeous.

  12. SusanRagain says:

SS is doing her “Hey, it’s me a Movie Star!” pose in the top photo. And she is def in on the joke, she is pulling this dress off. 😀
A bit over the top? Sure. But, nice color and she looks like she is having fun.

Now, Bill Murray is dressed like it’s his day off and he got dragged into showing up.

Tilda in the blue slim leg outfit looks really good. Those heels look painful tho.

  13. Golly Gee says:

The blue pantsuit that Tilda Swinton is wearing is stunning. I love the fabric and the color and style, mostly. I’m not crazy about the sleeves. I think it would look better sleeveless if the shoulders didn’t extend out quite so far.

  14. Gah says:

I don’t understand what is happening- is DG paying stylists (a lot) to push their clothing?? I can’t imagine the talent would take a paycheck like that…

But stylists for sure would to increase their bottom line.

I can’t understand the wave of D and G other than this theory.

  15. Pusspants says:

Who’s the dude between Chalamet & Swinton?

  16. Nikki says:

Didn’t Helen Botham Carter wear this dress years ago?

  17. Kelly says:

Saw this earlier on a newsstand and I think it is the most beautiful dress I have ever seen. I would love to have it and wear it everywhere, from the opera to the supermarket.

  18. MsIam says:

Its yikes for me. At first glance it looked like it was covered with those tissue paper flowers we used to make in high school. Anyway, I’m basic and boring and that’s why I like the yellow dress with the turquoise earrings.

  19. TeamMeg says:

I have one word for Sharon’s gown: FABULOUS! I absolutely love it on her, and the “Hell Yeah” energy she exudes in these photos is inspirational. Rock on, woman.

  20. Bibi says:

Sharon’s energy makes the gown work. Tilda’s blue suit is ah-mazing. Love the color, cut, fit. Everything!

  21. Mel says:

Not a fan of D&G but I love the dress and her.

  22. Bookie says:

Sharon can wear whatever she wants. She looks fabulous in anything.

    • BothSidesNow says:

I agree! I saw that interview were the photographer was asking about her relationship with the rapper and her son joked about how funny it was. As we see SS was rocking this jeans, waist chain and rocker look, and she looked fabulous! I think it SS confidence that shines through whatever she is wearing that makes them all work!

  23. Bettyrose says:

I think it’s time I made Tilda Swindon my fashion icon and just start copying all her looks.

  24. lucy2 says:

I don’t mind the idea, but the placement of the flowers seems a little haphazard. Also D&G suck as people.

It kind of looks like something from Enchanted. Can’t you picture Amy Adams’ character in this?

    • Thirtynine says:

Re the placement of flowers- when I looked at it I just imagined them going at it with a hot glue gun.

  25. KMAC says:

Oh, I love the dress and Sharon sparkles here! She looks amazing!

  26. Darcy P says:

We don’t deserve Bill Murray. He is simply amazing.

  27. ooshpick says:

My fave looks is Bill Murray in his jorts and hiking boots!

  28. Julia K says:

Sharon Stone in that dress is awesome!! She is in on the joke; don’t take yourself or fashion too seriously. Have some fun with life, she has earned it.

  29. Meg says:

In all the pics I’ve seen Timothee Chalamet looks like hes having a blast at this festival hes loving the fashion & the attention. Like hes wanted this for years and years. Fun when celebs enjoy this

  30. bitchyarchitect says:

I’m concerned about her eyes- it looks like she has cataracts

  31. Sof says:

Re: The French Dispatch picture, I’m sure you saw the meme about them being tagged as Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open, so spot on!
Tilda looks amazing in that blue suit.

  32. Maria says:

Vicky Krieps gave an incredible performance opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread so I stan her, definitely. Her shoes look like Chanel flats a little bit, to me.

The Dolce and Gabbana dress is lovely. It’s the same kind of over-the-top floral/bright color/Southern Italian theme they use. They ARE awful people so don’t think I am co-signing them, I am not.
Unfortunately they are bastions of the fashion world and I doubt they will be going away anytime soon the way they deserve.

  33. Chantale says:

Sharon does not care, she is having fun with this ugly Gone With The Wind dress.

  34. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

You are too right. That last pic is iconic on several levels.

  35. Jaded says:

    I’m here for Bill Murray.

  36. Turtledove says:

Sharon can pull off anything, even that dress. On her, I like it. Though, being that she CAN wear anything, I wish she didn’t wear D&G because they suck and don’t deserve the win. She would have looked just as good in a trash bag, and trash bags have more class than D&G.

Gotta say, SS looks possessed in that second picture. I think she’s absolutely gorgeous, it’s not a dig on her, but something about that particular shot looks positively demonic.

Tilda in the blue suit is PERFECTION. And it looks so simple and easy but there is just nothing “simple” about Tilda’s style, so unique and cool, always. Her daughter is pretty, looks like Tilda but like, a more conventional version of her.

  37. J ferber says:

Sharon’s dress is a lot, but she wears it well.

  38. A. Key says:

The flowers ruin it, it would have been gorgeous without them

  39. Marigold says:

I adore this dress. I don’t care about fashion being a certain way. I say wear whatever you want! Dress in a way that makes you feel like you! I always view clothes as costume anyway.
