Rose Byrne explains why she & Bobby Cannavale never got around to getting married

Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale have been together for years. They have two kids together, Rocco (5) and Rafa (3), and they live happily in Brooklyn. Only Rose got work in Australia during the pandemic, so they’ve spent a huge chunk of the past sixteen months in Sydney. Rose is currently promoting her AppleTV series Physical, which is why she chatted with the Sydney Morning Herald about the show, the pandemic and about whether she and Bobby will ever get married.

Leaving New York in the early days of the pandemic: “It was scary, trying to figure out how to get out and be safe. And no one knew anything, right? We were all in this boat of, ‘What is this?’ It was a very, very weird atmosphere in the city. Bobby and I went to see Girl from the North Country on Broadway, then, two days later, Broadway shut, and by that weekend it was awful. All of a sudden there was this tsunami, tidal wave, of this fearsome thing coming, then it just arrived and it was like, ‘Whoa.’ Then people we knew started to get it. Bobby lost friends.”

Her show ‘Physical’: “The whole [show] to me was so interesting. “The two worlds, the duality; the duality of the aerobics world and her oppressive marriage, her illness, her terrible relationship with herself. And it felt almost like a companion piece to Mrs America, because it starts in 1981 while Mrs America finished in 1980, so it was a clear through line for me, of the disillusionment a lot of women felt after the women’s movement.”

Moving to LA at the age of 18: “It’s an overwhelming city, but I had friends. Heath [Ledger] was a good friend of mine. We’d done a film together [Two Hands in 1999] and he was incredibly generous. He would take me under his wing and help me out for those first few years, always getting me in, auditioning for his movies, putting me up at his house.”

On Heath’s death: “I mean, listen, it’s obviously a tragedy. We had come over here together, then his career went like a freight train and … it’s so sad. He had an electric kind of energy.”

Whether she’ll ever marry Bobby: “I keep going, ‘Let’s get around to it, let’s do it.’ And then, you know, you have a baby, and then, oh, there’s another baby. It was kind of like that for us. I love weddings, and I know people [for whom] it’s an important thing, and I respect that totally. I guess for us it’s just been, we didn’t do it, we’ll do it, then – no! Pandemic.”

They’ll go back to Brooklyn eventually: “Brooklyn is home.”

[From SMH]

They’ve been together nine years already! I think they’ll probably just be one of those couples to never marry. Which is fine! But just say that, I guess. Because Bobby and Rose could easily, you know, just get married tomorrow in Sydney with her parents there and their kids and it would be fine. They’re choosing not to. How you can not marry Bobby Cannavale??! That man is a smokeshow. As for what she said about Heath… I had no idea they were that close. That made me really sad.

I totally didn’t know she was australian

  2. Missjo says:

Yeah no getting Married in Sydney for them
We are in pretty much total lockdown at the moment

    • liz says:

And he’s close to his older son. There is no way he’s getting married if Jake can’t be there.

    • AnnaKist says:

I thought the same. How are you coping with this hard l9ckown, Missjo? My son is the building manager of the apartment block under strict quarantine. He’s lucky to live on the ground floor, so able to sit outside with a coffee and his cat. Misses his girlfriend, though. We’re in the orange zone next door. When my daughter goes for her chemo and radiation, she drops in food or a bar of chocolate for him! Because of her treatments, we’ve been in self-imposed isolation for months, so we’re used to it. Hope all is good for you.

      • Jaded says:

Hope your daughter is back to full health soon Annakist!

      • Margo says:

In the US, we have no idea what ‘lockdown’ really means. Take care. Hope your daughter successfully completes chemo soon!

      • Missjo says:

Yeah it’s hard, l actually went into lock down a week before the official one as l had a bout of Asthmatic Bronchitis so am coming up to week 7 for me, l’m luckier than most as l am in a decent financial position as we paid off our house an are debt free and hubby is an essential worker for Ausgrid so it’s just about staying positive and limiting my news intake to only the ABC which doesn’t fear monger and checking in with friends and family to make sure that they are ok

      • Kebbie says:

@Margo No kidding. Even our strictest lockdowns were like “wear a mask in public and keep your parties under ten people” And people still lost their s*** about that!

      • LUPEBS says:

Sending love to others locked down, from Melbs. xoxo

Keep the gossip coming @celebitchy. It’s the only thing we have going for us some days.

      • AnnaKist says:

Aww. Thank you all for your good wishes. She’s so courageous. She’s in Stage 4 of a very aggressive lymphoma. Her second time. We hoped that after 6.5 years she was home and hosed. Every day seems to throw up another problem, and every day she squares up and takes it on the chin. And through it all, she’s thinking about making everyone’s day special. Thank you again.

      • AnnaKist says:

Missjo, I’m glad to hear youth doing ok. I only ever watch ABC as well, for the same reason. I can’t understand why anyone bothers with the other channels. It sounds like you’ve found a good balance. Stay well, ok!

    • Lex says:

My wedding is booked in Sydney for 3 October. No idea if we can go ahead of have to postpone. As the lockdown is currently scheduled till end of August, venue won’t let us make any decisions yet.

  3. Driver8 says:

I love her. I really enjoyed Physical. It got mixed reviews, but it really hit home for me in many ways. So happy it got renewed for another season. She’s an excellent actress!

    • TeamMeg says:

Physical season one is terrific— really happy the series was renewed, too. Rose’s performance is a tour de force and the rest of the cast is also superb.

  4. harla says:

I have long been in awe of Rose’s beauty, her skin looks flawless!

  5. tammy says:

    He’s SOOO handsome!

  6. DuchessL says:

I agree, such a fragile beauty. I love her face.

  7. DuchessL says:

I agree, such a fragile beauty. I love her face.

  8. Oh_Hey says:

I love these two and saw the act together in last years prepandemic production of Madea. They seem great together on and off stage.

With that said once you have kids there’s no good reason not get married. Not because of tradition or family values either – it’s about estates, tax, power of attorney and insurance. Just because the kids are legally related to both of you doesn’t mean you are to each other. Just a civil partnership is better than nothing if one of you winds up seriously injured hospitalized or dies when the kids are minors. It’s dark but that happens all the time. Divorces are easier than fights over wills, just saying.

    • Solidgolddancer says:

@oh_hey. Great points. It’s not as romantic to think about but getting those affairs in order is super important especially once kids are involved. I’m guessing they may have something in place to protect the kids tho…

    • Anna says:

End of the day, that’s the main reason for marriage. If you want to declare your love, do that but a legal marriage is really only best for the children. It doesn’t mean fidelity no matter what well-meaning vows people may exchange; that is a choice each day between two individuals. And even from a legal standpoint, it seems like almost anything can be contested these days after the fact if you have enough money and a good lawyer. And marriage as an institution has largely served to victimize women even up to today. So I say, yes, from a romantic standpoint, it would be lovely–I think they are such a great couple–but primarily since they have children.

  9. SM says:

I love them together. Probably the best celebrity couple fir me. I hope that they keep doing whatever works for them and not just give into pressure from outside. As we know, it may ruin the couple’s dynamics and everything goes to shit.

  10. BusyLizzy says:

I mean I am married but mostly did it for visa reasons, marriage is not for everyone and it’s ok.

I liked her show Physical, it was darker than I expected but I enjoyed it.

    • Anna says:

Agreed! So dark. But dark with real stuff. I’m glad it’s been renewed because the last episode just didn’t feel properly resolved…

    • Snuffles says:

I tried to get into it but hearing her constant inner monologue drove me batty.

    • MaplePlains says:

I liked Physical, too. Her character’s suppressed rage and awful inner dialogue were very familiar to me. And while I’ve never had a clinically-diagnosed eating disorder, I definitely struggled with disordered eating and exercise habits for years until reading Health At Every Size.

As for marriage, I agree it’s a personal choice. Having been married for 23 years, I think it’s been fine for me, and I really like my husband, but if anything ever happened to my husband or marriage, I don’t think I’d do it again.

    • lucy2 says:

I’m going to check it out – I like Rose, and it looks interesting.

I like him as an actor (they were hilarious together in Spy) but I don’t really get the hotness thing others see.

      • J says:

I feel the same way! I like him, but I don’t see the “oh my God, he’s so hot!” She, however, is gorgeous.

  11. Lightpurple says:

Such an insanely talented and charming couple.

  12. NicDix says:

I think it’s o.k. to just say they don’t want to get married because that’s what it sounds like.

  13. gaga says:

I love them both. I was fortunate enough to see him on Broadway in “The Lifespan of a Fact” with Daniel Radcliff and Cherry Jones. So amazing. He is an actor that you can believe in whatever role he is playing. Same for her! Chameleons. Love!!!

  14. Mimi says:

I love her, physical was much darker than I thought it would be but I absolutely loved it and am so happy it’s getting a second season

  15. Courtney B says:

I’ve liked him going back to Third Watch. Yes, I’m that old. Lol I love watching actors break out after you’ve seen them in a show at the very beginning of their career. Mahershala Ali and Kathryn Hahn from Crossing Jordan for instance. (Oooh now I want a Blade/Agatha Harkness team up).
Rose I remember from Damages so I was surprised when she was in Bridesmaids but she’s such a good comedian.

    • Lola Coasters says:

I am with you 100% about the Third Watch reference, damn that scene with his ass. Wow!

    • Agreatreckoning says:

I’m old too then. Third Watch & Crossing Jordan were 2 of my favorites. Like both Rose & Bobby. Really enjoyed Bobby in The Station Agent with Peter Dinklage & Patricia Clarkson and Rose in This is Where I Leave You.

    • DeltaJuliet says:

I liked him on Will & Grace lol I think that’s even older!

  16. Stef says:

I had no idea they were together but I love it! Two very talented, seemingly down to earth, beautiful people. Loved her in Mrs America and Bridesmaids and he blew my mind in Vinyl. 😍

  17. psl says:

I LOVE these two together! He was so great on “Nurse Jackie”, so was his son! They are both talented and beautiful people. I have never heard anything bad about either, which makes me like them even more.

  18. Maria says:

    The world underrate his hotness.

  19. jferber says:

Love these two together. Always did.

  20. LillyfromLillooet says:

Yeah, they give off a different vibe than Olivia and Jason on the getting married front.

And in the end getting married is no superglue—glue, for sure, and I know it gets people through rough patches. I think of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, and Brad and Angie. Just no guarantees.

  21. Monica says:

They are such a great couple, so evenly matched in talent, temperament and gorgeousness!

  22. Jenn says:

She did an amazing photoshoot with Heath Ledger in the ’90s, with the two of them palling around Las Vegas. If you just do a google image search of both their names, the photos all turn up. 🙂

  23. Ferdinand says:

You guys have to get on board with PHYSICAL. Such a great show.
Didn’t know Bobby was so close to his son from a previous relationship. I thought he had an on off again relationship with him. As a matter of fact, I believe his son had some substance abuse problem, he even opened an Only Fan for some time and hasn’t found much acting work as of lately. He is a very handsome guy, no doubt.

    • Renee says:

His son had a decent role in a season on Nurse Jackie when Bobby was starring it it. I assume his dad got him the job, but his son was a decent actor.

  24. Pix says:

I love Physical – and love her now because she so freaking good in it. I think he’s a great actor, hilarious when he needs to be, but I wouldn’t marry him either. I think he did his first wife dirty. He seems too charming that I’d never really trust him. I’m glad her star is rising.
