Will the Duke & Duchess of Sussex attend this year’s Emmy Awards?

Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex arrives at The Mountbatten Festival of Music

Last year, around the 2020 Oscars, I remember there was some speculation about whether the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would make a surprise appearance at the Oscar ceremony, or perhaps the Vanity Fair Oscar party. At the time, Harry and Meghan were staying in Canada, but there was the belief (a correct belief) that the Sussexes would end up in the LA area at some point. Of course the Sussexs didn’t end up going to the Oscars last year, nor did they go to the “pandemic Oscars” this year. Now that things are opening up and it appears as if the Emmy Awards will be a bigger, more star-studded event, what are the chances that Meghan and Harry might come out for that awards show? After all, their Oprah interview is nominated for an Emmy.

Emmy Award bosses are reportedly trying to get Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to make their Hollywood debut at next month’s ceremony — and even present an award.

“The Sussexes are in high demand — it would be their first red carpet appearance since Megxit and their full-time Californian move,” an L.A. TV source told The Sun of the hoped-for appearance. The royal exiles will already be a focus of the awards as their devastating TV tell-all with Oprah Winfrey has been nominated for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special.

“Oprah is planning to attend the night, which could help get them there,” The Sun’s source said.

It was not clear if the Duke and Duchess of Sussex — now permanently based in California — had accepted invitation’s to attend the Sept. 19 ceremony, the outlet stressed.

As well as the awards show itself, the couple will “certainly” get a “VIP invite” to celebrations thrown later by Netflix, the streaming service they signed one of their many recent big-money deals with. “Netflix knows that shots of them with big Hollywood names would be huge PR,” The Sun’s source said.

The 2021 Emmy Awards will be hosted by Cedric the Entertainer at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. “Oprah With Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special” is one of five nominated for the Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special prize.

[From Page Six]

I know this is from the Murdoch press (The Sun/Page Six) but… honestly, these “sources” are kind of making a good case? If the Emmys are a decent-sized party and a well-attended awards show, why wouldn’t the Sussexes make an appearance? They’re content-creators and producers now. They’re in the streaming game. Their interview was one of the big television events of the year. I genuinely hope they go and present one of the big awards and then they go to the Netflix party. Seriously.

PS… What if they went to the Met Gala though? *sips tea*

The fact they called it “Megxit” tells me what I need to know about this source. This is conjecture, based on an extrapolation of the facts. It’s logical to assume that Harry and Meghan would be a huge “get” for the Emmys, and since Oprah is nominated for the interview, it makes sense that they would be asked.
Whether or not they’ll agree to it is a different story. Also, I would LOVE it if the went to the Met Gala.

    • Amy Bee says:

@Merricat: yeah the source is probably a member of the royal rota.

    • Moxylady says:

HAS EVERYONE LOST THEIR MINDS?!? DELTA IS RAVAGING LA.
they have two little kids who aren’t vaccinated. They can catch and spread delta even though they are. It’s that simple. Why risk it?
That said we are locking back down on the east coast and in Colorado so…. I just don’t know anymore

      • AuntRara says:

I agree. It’s hard to imagine them wanting to be in a crowded place for hours where people are not masked. Vaccinated people can very much still get Covid and pass it on.

      • bettyrose says:

Moxylady – you’re totally right, it’s just that 16 months into this sh&t they told us we could be safe around other vaccinated people. Whip off those masks, reenter the world, and then several weeks later, it’s all STOP! Turn back!

It’s frustrating and hard not to at least fantasize about simple little pleasures like watching your favorite public figures in high fashion at an award’s show.

  2. Em says:

The nomination they got doesn’t even make it to the main show, so I don’t think they or Oprah will attend. Also I think the met gala is a little too showy???? I would like to see them attend other exclusive galas though and probably start a yearly archewell gala.

  3. Amy Bee says:

Is Oprah’s nomination even one of the televised awards? I can see them going to the Netflix party though.

    • Snuffles says:

No, her category is part of the Creative Arts Emmys that happen the night before.

I mean, I can’t wait for them to rock some res carpets but I’m not sure if this will be their first choice.

  4. Iris says:

It’s just funny because these critics never put it in real world terms or apply it to themselves. If you were invited to a cool party which a lot of your friends would be attending AND would be a good networking opportunity, wouldn’t you go?! It sounds fun

  5. Becks1 says:

I can believe they are being wooed by the Emmys to attend, and that there are huge hopes they attend the Netflix party. And maybe they will go to the latter, who knows.

I just don’t see a big red carpet event like the Emmys being their first big LA in-person outing (together.)

    • BayTampaBay says:

@becks1 – I agree with you as “I just don’t see a big red carpet event like the Emmys being their first big LA in-person outing (together)” either. It really is not an important enough event IMAO.

    • Nic919 says:

I agree. I am sure the Emmys people want them there, but I doubt they will be attending. I see them doing a public charity event as the first big event and that will probably not be until the delta variant is more under control.

Will there be behind the scenes meetings around that time? Sure, but they are not nominated themselves but are only the subject of Oprah’s interview. Once one of their one programs is nominated then we can expect them to attend.

  6. taris says:

i get that h+m are technically hollywood-adjacent now, but really i don’t see them being the kind of celebs that do red carpets and award shows, etc. doesn’t seem to me to be the vibe they’re going for.

  7. PinkBerry says:

I hope! It would piss the haters off.

  8. Sofia says:

I don’t see them attending the Emmys for the Oprah interview but maybe the Netflix after party like the article suggests.

  9. S808 says:

I could see them going to after parties to mingle and network but not the actual awards ceremony.

  10. Izzy says:

Why wouldn’t they go? Because there’s still a pandemic, new variants are raging, and they have two unvaccinated children who are too young to get the vaccine. I would be surprised if they did go, TBH.

  11. SuSuSusio says:

If their award is in the Creative Arts Emmys, I doubt they’ll go.

I don’t think the Emmys is their definitive public debut — but I support whatever they do and hope their interview wins the Emmy.

Whatever happens, I’ll save you some time later and tell you now what the DM will say after the Emmys:

If they go – they are shameful press wh*res, embarrassing the monarchy

If they win – they are shameful press wh*res, embarrassing the monarchy

If they don’t win – Hollywood sees them for the shameful press wh*res they are and their plans to sell out to Hollywood has failed — oh, and they embarrass the monarchy.

  12. Bettyrose says:

I am looking forward to them making public appearances again. It’s been a looong pandemic. It’s time for some new photo ops and Meg fashion California style.

  13. Over it says:

Being completely free gives them the choice to go or not go. Freedom is a beautiful thing.

  14. Legalese says:

Don’t see them going to the Emmys. The Met Gala, on the other hand…. much more up their alley. It’s for charity, it’s an opportunity to mingle with a lot of rich people, not just celebs, Meghan can support a designer, etc.

  15. Keri says:

I hope they get invited and attend all the major events. PWT and her keenness Karen’s heads would explode.

It would be nice seeing them both on the red carpet networking and promoting their Netflix projects. The reactions from the Royals and tabloids would be hilariously fun to read.

  16. Matthew says:

I want them to go to the America themed Met Gala!!! Even though I kind of detest the Met Gala

  17. Cathy says:

I did a reading on Meghan for rest of 2021. Dont shoot the messenger. This is what I got from current energy. I didnt type the cards I pull because I’m writing on my break time.

    According to cards ,

    1. I think there will be a drama around lily christening . Charles is behind this particular drama.

Either charles wont attend the christening or some funny business when comes to rules of line of succession like weird new law for royals born outside of uk something like.

I also get like weird british vs american citizenship drama with title something like that. This gives charles major advantages with current Tory government.

I cant exactly pinpoint which is . So let’s wait and see.

    2. There will be a scandal around oct to dec 2021 regarding cambriges marraige / affair coming out but this will be kept aside because mail vs Meghan court case will over blown by the time . People and paper wont pay that much attention like with peter divorce.

    3. I recently read mail is appealing , if they got approved ace of swords shows for mail which is victory.

Mail still didnt pay for legal fee to Meghan. If mail got approved then mail will win the case. So that dailymail will brag abt that victory completely leaving cambriges mess.

    This according to today’s energy.

    • Jaded says:

Thanks Cathy – very interesting and tallies with what many of us here have been discussing — the rocky state of the Cambridge marriage, Charles manipulating situations behind the scenes, etc.

      • Cathy says:

Thank very much. I also saw some major drama coming for both cambriges and Sussex children . I dont those two are relate or separate. But I keep on asking what is it . My guides are not allowing me to see. I dont know why. I get these weird cards for the cambriges and Sussex. For both of them separately I pulled all children cards in tarot like all pages, six of cups and sun .

There is also something with William and George alone. I dont know what is it there. So weird.

  18. Eurydice says:

Red carpets are about marketing. Harry and Meghan don’t need to market themselves and they don’t have anything to sell right now. Maybe if/when one of their Netflix projects is nominated. And after parties are about networking – H&M don’t need that, either. Plus, pandemic.

  19. Liz version 700 says:

Best part of this is that we won’t know until a publicist announces or they just show up! They don’t work in a royal office full of Karens, Chads and TOBs.

  20. L4frimaire says:

I don’t think they’d go to this. It’s Oprah’s production that’s being nominated and I thought the category isn’t featured in the main broadcast anyway. I think a lot of people, both lovers and haters, would love to see them go to a glam event.

  21. Coffeeisgood says:

I would die of excitement if they went to the met gala. I don’t think they would though unfortunately.

  22. Theothermia says:

At this point, Harry and Meghan can pick and choose.

Will and Kate have to go cap-in-hand.

  23. BeanieBean says:

I would think that if you want this couple to attend your function you wouldn’t use the term, ‘Megxit’. Geez Louise.

  24. Isla says:

    Nah don’t see it personally, I think they’re busy/cba
