Kristen Stewart wore Chanel for the Venice ‘Spencer’ premiere: ugh or fine?

78th Venice International Film Festival

Last Friday, Kristen Stewart walked the Venice Film Festival premiere of Spencer, the historical drama about Princess Diana in 1990. I wondered if Kristen would perhaps channel Diana in some way for her tour through the film festivals, but she really hasn’t. I mean, maybe her Chanel blazer at the photocall was Diana-esque, but she paired it with hot pants. And Diana would not have ever stepped onto a red carpet wearing this ugly negligee. This is Chanel and it’s really terrible that they sent her out in this mess. This looks like some cheap thrift-store nylon pajama set from the 1980s!! Ugh. I hate that Chanel did her dirty. I’m not saying that I expected to see Kristen in a ballgown, looking like a princess. But find a middle ground, or at the very least, find a really great pantsuit. One nice thing: her hair looks so much better in these photos. The color looks less orange-y.

As for the Venice reviews of Spencer… almost all of them are positive, and most critics completely loved Kristen in this role and they believe she absolutely nailed it, and that she’ll receive an Oscar nomination for it. The bad news is that after Season 4 of The Crown, I’m not sure the royal establishment is ready for how Spencer continues to make them look like petty, moronic clowns. The Guardian’s review (written by Xan Brooks) is the one being widely quoted:

Working off a sharp script by Steven Knight, Chilean director Pablo Larraín spins the headlines and scandals into a full-blown Gothic nightmare, an opulent ice palace of a movie with shades of Rebecca at the edges and a pleasing bat-squeak of absurdity in its portrayal of the royals. Larraín’s approach to the material is rich and intoxicating and altogether magnificent. I won’t call it majestic. That would do this implicitly republican film a disservice.

Jetted in from California, Kristen Stewart proves entirely compelling in the title role… Stewart effectively captures the agony of a woman so programmed and insulated that she feels she has no escape and has lost sight of who she is. The servants (well played by Sally Hawkins and Sean Harris) want to help but they are part of the very machine that she hates. They know that if Diana breaks down, the mechanism does too. What matters above all else is to keep the woman up and running.

No doubt it took an outsider to make a film that’s as unreverential as Spencer, which dares to examine the royals as if they were specimens under glass. At heart, of course, Larraín and Knight’s tale is utterly preposterous. It’s a tragedy about a spoiled princess who lashes out at the servants; a thriller about a woman who has only 10 minutes to get into her dress before Christmas dinner is served. But how else do you play it? The monarchy itself is preposterous. Spencer presents the whole institution as little more than a silly ongoing game of dress-up, a farce that depends for its survival on everyone playing along and propping up the illusion, the old moth-eaten brocade. Anybody who doesn’t is ostracised, crushed or cast out in the cold, with the scarecrow and the pheasants and the shivering security men. “Will they kill me, do you think?” says Diana, half-joking, and such is the level of fury and tension that just for a moment we believe that they might.

[From The Guardian]

I was already going to see Spencer, but reading through the reviews has convinced me that I will genuinely enjoy it. Apparently, Diana sees Anne Boleyn’s ghost too, and Anne tells to GTFO while she still can? Amazing.

    Wtf, Chanel?

  2. Darla says:

I am definitely going to see this.

  3. Gobo says:

The way the elasticated waist bunches looks so cheap.

  4. Fuzzy Crocodile says:

Genuine question – do you have no choice but to wear what they give you?

Cause if that was what I was offered, I wouldn’t go out.

Or were the other outfit choices worse.

  5. Nanny to the Rescue says:

I like her hair and make-up, but giant UGH to the clothes.

    • Angelica Schuyler says:

I agree. From the neck up she looks gorgeous, from the neck down it’s a disaster. That outfit looks like a slip and some pettipants I bought for my (80 year old) mom last year from Sears. – Not even joking….

  6. Ninks says:

This is truly awful. But more horrifyingly, it’s the second time in the past week I’ve seen the short dress over trousers look worn on the red carpet. I thought we left this trend to die in the 90s, why, why is it making a comeback?

  7. Jenny says:

She looked better at the start of the festival. Her face looks washed out by this new colour and her make up is too dark. She is very cute. Will pass on the movie…

    • Yup, Me says:

Maybe the intention is that she morphs into a corpse bride over the course of the promotion? Or that she alludes to it for the duration.

  8. Becks1 says:

    That outfit is awful.

I have gone from being kind of “meh” on Spencer to wanting to see it on opening weekend.

  9. kif says:

Ugly dress. Beautiful review . . ” the whole institution as little more than a silly ongoing game of dress-up, a farce that depends for its survival on everyone playing along and propping up the illusion, the old moth-eaten brocade”. Perfect statement is perfect.

    • CherHorowitz says:

Yessss this was the line that stuck out for mw too! I haven’t seen this so succinctly put before. I’ve often thought about how absolutely nothing tangible happens if someone doesnt curtsey to he right people, or if protocol isnt followed, or if someone doesnt greet the queen with ‘your majesty’… literally the only reason these ridiculous notions are kept rigidly in place and clung to for dear life is because that’s all they have to pretend it’s real in any way.

  10. Lauren says:

Chanel did Kristen dirty with this one. I really want to see the movie.

  11. Abby says:

I hate the outfit but wow, she is so beautiful. She’s come a long way from twilight.

  12. Bunny says:

That outfit looks so cheap. As someone who sews, I’d be so ashamed to have my name on something like this. The bow looks tacked on. The trousers look puckered at the side seams.
    Everything is wrong.
    She’s beautiful.
    Chanel owes her an apology.

  13. Eurydice says:

Yikes! Not only did Chanel do her dirty – this actually looks dirty.

  14. Snuffles says:

I’m definitely curious to see the movie after reading the review. Not run to the theater curious, but willing to rent and stream online curious.

  15. Aurora says:

Has Chanel ever produced a good red carpet moment? I feel sorry for actresses contracted to wear Chanel.

  16. Sofia says:

    Terrible outfit.

As for the movie itself, I’m still not watching unless it comes on Netflix/Prime. I may enjoy her and the movie, I just don’t like spending money watching royal movies unless it’s already on a streaming site.

  17. Voominvava says:

I loved loved loved the little shorts outfit ! This one is okay but she can pull anything off. I love how happy and smiley she looks.. she used to always look like she wanted to be anywhere but promoting her own movies. She seems to be finally comfortable in her own skin and in a very happy relationship.
Love her hair and can’t wait to see the movie.

  18. North of Boston says:

Chanel has totally lost the plot, haven’t they?

It’s not just that I don’t “get” their house style. Because they don’t really seem to have one, and this look *could* have been done in a way that looked gorgeous. But there were weird aesthetic choices ie that bow placement absolutely looks like a last minute “oof, this isn’t working, the front is not acceptable, quick do something” Project Runway Hail Mary.

And, more importantly, the actual construction of the pieces is awful: cheap looking elastic gatherings, uneven hemlines, trim, poor tailoring… for example the tightness across her chest that makes the trim look wobbly and uneven, wonky stitching.

I could see how Kristen, her stylist could have seen this look in a style book and thought it would work, be fun, frothy without being cake-toppy and different. then when it showed up, poorly executed, they were stuck making it work. And she carries herself fine in it, her styling works … but the outfit is a let down.

I don’t get it: high profile fashion house dressing high profile actress for high profile event with dates known for months … why so shoddy? I sometimes wonder if people at fashion houses hate the people they are dressing, including their brand reps. But this happens so often with some brands that I am starting to wonder if they are just badly run, with no interest in quality control … it’s like amateur fast-fashion on the red carpet.

    • Eurydice says:

I comb through all the fashion shows every season, and I don’t remember seeing this on the runway – maybe my brain blocked the horror. There was one dress from spring (I think) that had a long, limp black bow like that, but it wasn’t repeated as a theme. I can’t figure out where this came from.

      • North of Boston says:

Zendaya wore a dress that had a flowy long dark bow earlier in the week at Venice, but it seemed better placed and constructed and worked with the look. I don’t know who made it though.

  19. CROOKSNNANNIES says:

This is potentially the happiest she has looked on a red carpet- wearing one of her worst-ever red carpet outfits. I was initially charmed by that smile but the outfit is shapeless, frumpy, and cheap-looking and the shade, while pretty, almost clashes with her hair? I think Chanel is too stiff and frigid for me a lot of the time, but at least it looks high-quality and well-constructed. Not this time.

  20. Winter Day says:

    Just no. No. No. No.

  21. Jules says:

Omg this outfit is so twee and awful. Love her hair though. And I want to see this movie now.

  22. Sasha says:

Her hair, makeup and colour of the outfit are stunning on her. I love when very pale women wear pale colours, looks so ethereal. Kristen is such a beautiful woman – and lovely to see her smiling and look so happy!

I’ve also noticed Kristen getting really great reviews for her work in her later years. I think she’s really improved as an actress.

  23. Ann says:

I think my grandmother wore this outfit when she was about 78 and hanging around the house all day.

  24. Sof says:

Judging by the second picture, the pants are see through! I’ve never liked any Chanel look, but I’m surprised that I liked the idea, however the execution and the fabrics… It’s giving me pajama set.
Kristen looks amazing, I like the hair and makeup.

  25. Cessily says:

Looks very similar to my pj’s as a little girl..

  26. SusanRagain says:

    Ugly 10x.
How much is she being paid to wear that?
I take my garbage out in better looking clothes.
    Channel can bite me!
I bet the stylists are doubled over snort laughing when she left agreeing to wear that ugly crapola.

    • BeanieBean says:

Woulda been worse had she had to buy the outfit. Then again, I bet they get zero orders for this hideous outfit.

  27. Barbie1 says:

At least she looks happy wearing it. Must be nice working for Chanel.

  28. Tangerinetree says:

Somehow Kristen manages to look as if she doesn’t even care that the outfit is a mess and is having a blast promoting this movie. Hopefully someone from her management team is busting in Chanel’s doors and kicking some ass.

  29. Coco says:

Did Chanel dig up Karl Lagerfeld’s corpse and return it to the position of creative director?

    • Angelica Schuyler says:

No, because Karl Lagerfeld’s rotting corpse would have done a better job than this outfit! LOL

  30. BeanieBean says:

I wore jammies like that in grade school!

  31. Maxime duCamp says:

Not a great outfit but I’m not hating it as much as everyone else. However, I do hate the white stilettos and it has nothing to do with what they’re paired with. For me, white stilettos ALWAYS look trashy; like leftovers from last year’s “sexy nurse” halloween costume. I think that KStew’s stylist should’ve fully leaned into the lingerie look of the outfit and paired it with some feathered mules.

    • Duch says:

feathered mules- that would have been terrific!

I actually like this one – pretty color, like the black contrast, and it’s tacked on; I like the “offness” about it, and so different. Reminds me of young teens dressing up in their nightgowns pretending to be starlets. Dream actualized. And also she’s in a great mood. Well done.

  32. jferber says:

    I can’t believe it’s Chanel. Yes, it’s really bad.

  33. Liz version 700 says:

I think I made an outfit like this for my dolls, when I was 8…out of aluminum foil and left over lace…this is so bad.

  34. Coffeeisgood says:

I’m not loving this hair color. It looks like her stylist bleached it and forgot to tone it.

  35. Kaykay says:

The only thing that caught my attention was her smile. I don’t think I’ve seen it before.

  36. Keroppi says:

The bow looks like an arrow.

  37. Anna says:

She looks like a hooker. Sorry. The hair (style and colour) really rounds off the outfit.

  38. Kat says:

This is 1990s Courtney Love at Lolla vibes, not 2010s Venice FF nominee vibes.

WTF was Chanel thinking? Do they even *like* Kristen, sending her out in this mess?

Not a good look for the house at all. And it’s all on Chanel.

  39. Eating Popcorn says:

Didn’t they tell her this was the Chanel pajama line…

  40. Normades says:

Aside from the waistband I don’t hate it.

I really really love her hair though. Mostly the cut more than the color.

  41. Nibbi says:

It’s the pants I’m extra bothered by. They truly do remind me of weird little nylon pyjamas, faded out, eventually pilled, and a little greyed from the wash, that I wore as a scrawny kid in the 80s.
But like… not in a good way ;)

  42. rabblerabble says:

I truly thought she was Vanessa Paradis at first.
