Jake Gyllenhaal: ‘I’ve never been accused of being smelly…Of course I bathe’

"The Lost Daughter" Red Carpet - The 78th Venice International F

I’m still not entirely sure how I got stuck on the dirty-ass beat, but here we are. In August, Jake Gyllenhaal gave an interview to Vanity Fair to promote becoming the face of a Prada cologne. The interview was light, about cologne and scents and the Prada ad campaign, and VF threw in an easy, fun question about Jake’s bathing habits. It wasn’t super-personal or anything, but Jake offered up this stank-ass quote: “More and more I find bathing to be less necessary, at times… I do also think that there’s a whole world of not bathing that is also really helpful for skin maintenance, and we naturally clean ourselves.”

Jake’s comments went viral, partially because I tweeted the quote and that tweet blew up and even celebrities were talking about it online. It was a huge thing for about 48 hours and then everyone moved on to the next thing. Everyone except Jake, whose smelly ass still hurts whenever he thinks about how everyone knows he’s filthy. When he was in Venice, he was asked about his VF quote and he said that when he works on indie films, the trailer showers don’t work and how he was “sarcastic and ironic and it has followed me around.” Ah, yes. So let’s see if he can improve on that explanation in a new interview:

Jake Gyllenhaal wants to clear up a rumor: He does actually bathe. In a new interview with the Times, the actor, 40, addressed comments he made that suggested his showers were somewhat sporadic.

“I don’t know!” Gyllenhaal answered, when asked how the viral story gained traction. “I think someone asked me about my bathing routine — which I found to be a bit invasive. And so my response was that I do it all, sometimes. And what I got back was that I don’t bathe.”

However, Gyllenhaal said he doesn’t really mind the rumors, since he’s never received any complaints. “That’s OK — I’ve never been accused of being smelly. It’s fine. Of course I bathe. In the Luna Rossa scent, daily,” he joked, since the interview was to promote his role as the face of the new Prada fragrance, Luna Rossa Ocean.

“Someone asked me about my bathing routine — which I found to be a bit invasive…” If anyone, anywhere was like “hey cool what are your shower rituals,” I would be so excited to talk about it! I would love to talk about it because I’m a normal person who showers twice a day and I have many shower rituals. Jake is so dirty and unbathed that his mind went blank and now he’s trying to pretend that he only made up some sh-t because the question was too personal?? And “I’ve never been accused of being smelly…” He’s a famous actor and people treat him accordingly. Of course the people around him aren’t going to say “actually dude, you smell rancid.” Why is he so bad at this?? Why can’t he just say “it was a simple miscommunication, it’s my fault, of course I shower every day.” Why is he still being so f–king cryptic? Is it because he’s still unclean? Yes. It is.

Here are some pics of Smelly Jake at the Tony Awards on Sunday night. His 25-year-old girlfriend Jeanne Cadieu was there but he wouldn’t let her walk the carpet with him. She was probably grateful to avoid The Stench.

His 25 year old GF, who was 21 when they started dating, finally got to stand next to him at the lost daughter premiere with his sister last night.

I keep avoiding these posts (sorry) because I really don’t want to know which celebrity bathes theme selves or their kids regularly or not. And it’s info I can’t unsee! Ahh! I still think about deodorant-less Matthew McCounaughey and that was info that came out years ago.

His answers here are funny though. 😆 I like Jake. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s his business. I say that and I wouldn’t be remotely attracted to someone who didn’t regularly bathe. My husband showers 1-2, sometimes 3x a day depending on if he worked out or did stuff outside.

Definitely not clicking on the mila kunis / Kristen bell posts though.

Also I’d get next to Matthew’s granola stank any day ftr

      • Abby says:

hahaha yeah for sure. MM is really hot regardless of deodorant status. I just hope he doesn’t run for governor. I love him but please don’t be my governor. haha

I laughed hard reading your commentary🤣😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Okay, this needs to stop. I literally don’t care how any of these people bathe as long as I can’t smell them. Like, I’m pretty into celeb culture and like to find out things about talented people and how they work and sometimes how they live, but, seriously, their bathing routines, as it turns out, is something I really, really don’t need or want to know about.

  5. Noki says:

I honestly dont get the fashion and fragrance houses who give these deals to people who are obviously grubby in real life. Not that i expect them to be prestine in Prada 24/7 but i just dont buy what Kristen Stewart,Jennifer Lawrence etc are selling.

  6. Neners says:

Cracking up that Kaiser would love to discuss bathing habits and rituals 😂😂😂 Same! So much same! Because I legit love bathing! It sparks joy!

  7. Roo says:

Kaiser, this post is hilarious and I just can’t look at him the same after reading the first post about his smelly self. He looks like he smells like BO mixed with expensive perfume. LOL

    • Hell Nah! says:

So very true!!!!! I can’t look at him without the thought that he’s stinkin’ to high heavens right now running through my head. He shoulda kept his stank mouth shut — and I’m gonna be cracking up all day long at the hilarity of this post.

      Kaiser, you have me HOWLING!

I feel like he’s exactly the kind of actor who would make up some weird bs if he thought a reporter was being too invasive, and I don’t mean that as a compliment or anything! He’s very talented but he has always given off an air of being too good for interviews, or easily annoyed by them. Lainey gossip has a story on her podcast of the worst interview she’s ever had and it was with him- his publicist allegedly told Lainey “he’d love it do you asked about his favorite things in Toronto!” and he acted like it was an invasive question and treated her pretty rudely, by her account!

First, I don’t know how one gets into smelly trouble when promoting a perfume or cologne commercial. Prada must LOVE him. Anyway, I thought he last said that he was just being sarcastic or ironic w/ what he said. Now he’s saying he was misquoted? I like him because he seems harmless and was really good in Brokeback Mountain. However, that quote about bathing less and less, and going on about the school of thought about bathing infrequently, and the body being self-cleaning were very specific. If Jake didn’t say those things, but was quoted as saying them why didn’t he say that before? I’m mostly puzzled about why he or the other celebrities would share such personal information in the first place. Oh well, at least he didn’t divulge anything about kids.

Kaiser you’re doing the good works here keeping Jake on our minds. We haven’t had such frequent threads about him … ever? He’s just not scandal worthy. But I’ll take any excuse for more Jake threads. 🥰

    • Abby says:

You know, I am really just waiting for scarf drama and stories when Taylor Swift releases Red (Taylor’s Version). Anyone else?

I think Jake is so handsome and I’ve loved him since October Sky. I know nobody is perfect. As he’s aged, he has really started to look so much like my HUSBAND (My husband loves to hear that from me and other people). Plus they’re the same age. So basically, I married the frequently-showering, not an actor, version of Jake. LOL

      • Bettyrose says:

Abby – I’m not at all jealous. 🤣 (but seriously I love my dude very much, even if the only celeb he gets compared to is John Lennon)

  10. SheWolf says:

I’m really tired of this site calling people who don’t bathe every day “stinky” and “grubby”. It’s racist, classist, and ablist, not to mention scientifically inaccurate.

    • Hell Nah! says:

@SheWolf: Oh? Really? I take it as people who, with intention, make the CHOICE not to bathe every day. That is, they have the resources and the ability to do so, but not the will.

It’s their intentional choice not to soap it up and scrub it down. We are certainly not talking about those who find themselves homeless or, for one reason or another, without the resources to bathe every day.

Jake “The Stench” Gyllenhaal thought he was being clever and quite frankly, above it all, when he revealed his intermittent bathing habits. Now that he’s been hit with a stinkbomb of a backlash, he’s backpedalling hard. Haha ha. He was the one who put his stink in the road so…play stupid games…

      But sure, you do you.

    • Debbie says:

What? “racist, classist”-what???! Oh dear God, that was such a leap. People who don’t have access to running water, or are physically impaired DO still wash themselves, and perform their ablutions. They don’t go around saying their bodies are “self-cleaning.” They still clean themselves and are perfectly sanitary. Not the same thing at all.

    • Steph says:

      How is this racist?
Classist? Ableist? @Kaiser literally only talks about able bodied rich people.
People who are choosing not to bathe bc they don’t want to.

  11. jferber says:

Can we just stop with smelly celebrities? And could they just stfu about their awful sanitary practices that they’re so proud of and which they inflict on their children?

  12. Big Little Sighs says:

The question is not if he bathes- it’s how often. Our bodies are not self cleaning. Come on with this in the middle of a pandemic?

  13. SheWolf says:

On every one of these threads commenting about celebrities’ admissions of their bathing schedules, the underlying concensus has been that they *must* be stinky and *must* be unhygienic because it is *gross* not to shower regularly. That assumption is problematic in a lot of offensive ways, but even if it weren’t, it’s also just plain incorrect. If you are generating a lot of BO because of puberty or intense physical activity, that’s one thing, but a person hanging out in an air conditioned home is likely not going to need a shower every day, or even every other day, from a hygiene perspective.

Perhaps the issue here is the word “regularly”, but I’ve ready many comments on these threads asserting that anything less than daily is disgusting. A person who has the means to scrub every day with soap and doesn’t is not necessarily stinky or gross, just like a person who can’t even if they wanted to is not necessarily stinky or gross.

  14. Steph says:

@kaiser you said you’d love to discuss your bathing rituals, why do you shower twice a day?
Just curious bc I’m a one a day girl and only find 2x showering occasionally necessary.
