The Queen will give ‘Jubilee medals’ to Prince Andrew, Prince Harry & Meghan

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II leads the royal family out on the balcony to view the flypast by the RAF at Trooping the Colour on Saturday 8 June 2019

I realize that a lot of planning needs to go into any major royal celebration, like for the Queen’s Jubilee. But it’s kind of too much, right? There’s too much energy going into “this and this and this will happen at the Platinum Jubilee!!” The event is about nine months away! A lot can happen in nine months. Still, the latest announcement around the fakakta Jubilee is that the Queen will hand out 400,000 special Jubilee medals to servicemen, first responders, prison workers and people who work in public service. People like the royal family. Which means that Prince Harry AND Prince Andrew will likely receive medals regardless?

Prince Andrew is one of the members of the Royal Family who will be honoured with a Platinum Jubilee medal from the Queen. The Duke of York, 61, stepped back from royal duties due to controversy surrounding his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, but is still expected to receive the award.

Around 400,000 medals will be awarded to frontline members of the emergency and prison services, as well as the Armed Forces who have completed five years’ work. The medals will be given to show the monarch’s gratitude for their public service. Members of the Royal Household with one year’s service and living recipients of the George and Victoria Cross will also receive the medals.

The award will also be given to members of the Royal Family even if they do not work for the Firm, as a source said it is a “purely commemorative” gesture, the Daily Express reports.

Prince Andrew, as well as Peter Phillips, Zara and Mike Tindall, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and their husbands, are set to be awarded with the medals.

The Duke of York previously received medals from his mother’s Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Countess of Wessex are also set to receive the medals, the Daily Express reports.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “A wide number of members of the Royal Family will receive the Platinum Jubilee medal in line with the previous two jubilees.”

[From The Daily Mirror]

If she’s giving the medals to all of her family members, then I don’t think it’s some huge deal either way. It will be curious to see if there’s any energy (from the courtiers) on “withdrawing” Harry and Meghan’s Jubilee medals for Reasons and yet allowing Andrew to accept his Jubilee medal. But, as I said, a lot can happen in nine months. Will Andy still get a medal if the Queen has to pay out in the Virginia Giuffre lawsuit?

  1. Seaflower says:

I notice in the royal statement Meghan is referred to as MM but the rest of the females by title. It must be exhausting to be so petty every minute of the day.

    • Summerlover says:

Harry is Prince Harry and not Duke of Sussex. So petty.

      • Lorelei says:

@SummerLover it pains me greatly to defend any of those rags, but in fairness, it’s for practical and SEO reasons, because those names are just what most people know and use. No one would Google the “Duke of Sussex” or the “Duchess of Cambridge,” they would search for Prince Harry or Kate Middleton because that’s how they’re so widely known and recognized and have been for years. It’s not a personal slight.

ETA: I read it too quickly the first time and I was wrong! I didn’t realize it was an official royal statement and you’re absolutely right; in this context, they definitely should have used Duke of Sussex. Please disregard my initial comment!

My god are these people committed to insulting Harry or Meghan at ANY and every possible opportunity. If they showed this kind of commitment and attention to detail in their actual “work” instead of always trashing the Sussexes, they’d be in a much better position than they are now.

    • Couch potato says:

I noticed that too. They keep being petty and tries to degrade her in every way they can. They don’t even realise they only tell on themselves by doing it.

    • Royalle says:

To be fair, they left a job that came with a title. If you quit your job as Manager or CEO of something so you get to keep your title after you’ve left the company? The total family are a business, it’s a corporation. Why is revoking titles considered petty?

      • Charm says:

The titles of Duke and Duchess were not revoked.

So your entire argument is caca.

      • Over it says:

Royalle. They are still the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. They still retain their HRH even though they have agreed not to use them. Andy is still being referred to as the Duke of York I believe. So why should it be any different for Harry and Meghan? And from what I understand, the titles were a wedding gift. So to not get to keep them would be petty as f .

      • FrodoOrOdo says:

Look, you know as well as I do that British titles aren’t actually tied to any kind of job. Like that’s the whole complaint people have with titles.

There are a number of dukes and duchesses in England who do nothing more than exist to pass the title down to the next one, people whose names you’ve never heard of except that maybe their ancestor was mistress to the king or a court favorite or has counties in England and America named after them or who popularized a dress style.

      • AmelieOriginal says:

Kind Edward abdicated from being king and was referred to as the Duke of Windsor for the rest of his life I believe? Not just Prince Edward (though I’m sure the media at the time probably came up with lots of fun nicknames for him with the whole Wallis debacle), even though his move to abdicate was probably very unpopular at the time. Harry and Meghan left due to racist and sexist abuse aimed at Meghan and the way she was vilified in the media. They didn’t just quit a CEO position.

      • Becks1 says:

        1) Because no one is talking about revoking Prince Andrew’s title

        2) titles are not tied to being a working royal. Ask the entire aristocracy about that.

        3) Prince Edward was given a title upon marriage even though at the time he and Sophie weren’t going to be FT royals.

      • tamsin says:

I think that omparing their titles to corporate titles isn’t really an accurate analogy. The royal titles are related to birth and birth order. The Royal Family likes to compare themselves to a Firm, but they operate by completely unique rules. If they operated like a real firm, they wouldn’t last a day.

      • Mrs.Krabapple says:

@Royalle – And yet they mentioned that Andrew is “the Duke of York.” Even though he “stepped away” from any royal duties because he is a(n alleged) rapist and sex trafficker.

@AmelieOriginal — and his brother (the new king) made him a ROYAL Duke too, so he could keep the HRH title while being made a Duke. But the king specifically provided that his wife and any kids they have would NOT be given HRH titles (which they normally would). It confirmed that the HRH title is given/taken away by the whim of the monarch.

      • Green Desert says:

You’re working hard today, @Royalle. I see you on the Carole post as well. I think you know what you’re doing.

      • NiqGee says:

The titles don’t come with the job, they come with the family position.

      • Debbie says:

Royalle: Have you ever heard of Andrew? Titles associated to work indeed.

      • Tessa says:

The York sisters do not do any royal work yet they never lost their royal titles. The Sussexes are entitled to those titles.

    • Becks1 says:

To be fair, the part in the quoted article is from the Express, then after that is the line from the BP spokesperson. the Mirror is quoting the Express who calls her Meghan Markle. That part is not from BP.

Maybe there’s more in the actual article but I didn’t click through.

    • Sarah says:

It’s done on purpose. It’s way easier to google and link the name Meghan Markle then it would be the Duchess of Sussex. Meghan’s name makes money for them so they diminish her title and make it easier for clicks so that they can make money.

  2. Alexandria says:

Would have meant more to the healthcare workers and other non royal folks who have served the public. Now she has to cheapen the whole thing by giving her privileged family medals alongside whatever non disclosed wealth that she has accumulated. Well done Liz. Way to go. Does your dignity feel preserved?

    • Keri says:

I wonder if any of the first responders or others who actually serve would dare to forfeit this useless medal out of protest? I would be insulted if I got a medal alongside the resident royal pedophile.

    • Lorelei says:

@Alexandria, once again, someone here immediately has an idea better than theirs. I really hope some aide reads all of the comments here on CB because we’re consistently giving them smarter and more creative ways to do whatever they’re doing.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ Alexandria, yes, and thank you!!! Also, perhaps TQ should forgo all of the money that she is charging the taxpayers for her jubilee and possibly put those funds towards paying a better wage for all HC workers and emergency workers. I am pretty certain that they would prefer a raise instead of a plastic trinket!

  3. Ang says:

If everyone gets a “medal” than what does it even mean?

    • Couch potato says:

It’s like kindergarden. Everyone gets a medal for participating. That’s the only way the mediocre family can get medals.

    • Mac says:

It sounds it is just a souvenir.

    • Debbie says:

Actually, I thought the queen was giving away 399,999 medals to all and sundry just so she could get away with awarding Andrew a medal without backlash. In other words, it’s a smokescreen. After all, Andrew needs a little pick-me-up since he’s having a bad year.

  4. OriginalLala says:

The BRF is forever giving themselves medals and honors that mean nothing and are unearned…they are such a joke.

    • molly says:

I picture Meghan being really polite when receiving it while thinking, “WTF am I supposed to do with this thing??” Philip and Charles, with their rows and rows of little fake medals, always cracks me up. It’s all pretend!

  5. Who ARE these people? says:

How many medals will end up on eBay?

  6. Nyro says:

Reminds me of all the planning for Phillip’s 100th.

  7. Moderatelywealthy says:

TQ said there is no way her dear boy will not get to play with a shiny thing and now they learned social media would roast them alive if they were to try and not give Harry abd Meghan their shiny thing too…

  8. Becks1 says:

Does anyone even really care about the Platinum jubilee besides having a few days off? British CBers, is it a thing being discussed over there or does no one really care?

    • Emily says:

Literally nobody is talking about it. Although I’m not the Daily Mail Reader demographic.

    • Sofia says:

Can’t speak for everyone but no, it’s not really a thing that everyone cares about or is discussing.

If people are discussing it, it’s because of the days off and the street parties, not because they love the queen (unless they’re monarchists). And after it’s all done, people will forget and move on.

    • Layla says:

No. Literally no one in the public has said a word. Even the mainstream news channels haven’t said anything yet. Here they only care about the extra bank holidays

    • Nic919 says:

I work for a company with a UK head office and asked them about it in terms of holidays and whether or not the other offices will get them too. They had no idea what I was talking about.

    • SarahCS says:

I keep forgetting we get an extra bank holiday. I’d like to know when but can’t be bothered to google. Also, I work freelance so can schedule my own bank holidays to suit! But our street does like a party and we do them quite well so if we do one for this that should be fun.

    • Lorelei says:

@Becks, right before I read your comment, I was thinking about how literally no one — not one single person I know — is aware of its existence. No one knows wtf it is or when or why or anything. Obviously we’re Americans so maybe the Brits talk about it more, but that’s not the sense I get from the ones I know. All they’re concerned with is whether or not they’ll get a bank holiday out of it. And if it wasn’t for CB, I wouldn’t know about it either. The way the family and press have been droning on and on about it for months already is so pathetic.

They are all so myopic, and I don’t know if it’s Iegit gotten worse since they’ve been digging their heels in lately, or if they’ve always like this, but I just never paid enough attention to notice it. They’re delusional if they think anyone outside the Queen and the people planning it are this riled up about an event nine months away (which, um, might not even take place, depending on certain circumstances).

Unrelated but I HATE how they always say, “the controversy around Andrew’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.” I’m like, bitches, please, we all know it’s not solely because of any friendship” (although his friendship with both Jeffrey and Ghislaine is certainly cause for concern for a multitude of reasons), it’s because Andrew raped a trafficked young girl. We all know. Come ON.

  9. Neners says:

“She’s giving you a medal so you HAVE to come!” Granny is not above bribing! 😜

    • Jegede says:

      My EXACT thoughts.🙄🙄🙄

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

Is this like when your grandmother gives packets of sweets to her grandkids? Will Andrew or Edward throw themselves onto the carpet and tantrum if they don’t get first pick? Royals really are just like us!

    • Lila says:

This!! They’re frothing at the mouth for any reason why the Sussexes have to come (And bring the kids). I’m sure granny will get them fisher price medals or something.

  10. Amy Bee says:

Yeah the press is going to make a uproar about Harry and Meghan getting Jubilee medals.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

But also if they don’t get medals, or if they refuse medals or just in general for existing.

    • Lorelei says:

@AmyBee I’m sure they’ve all already added it to the list of reasons they give over and over again about how well the family treated them and what ingrates they are.

We will be hearing it for the rest of our lives, the same way we’ll still be reading, in 2040 or whenever, about how many toilets they have.

    • Jay says:

Oh, for sure, we’re gonna endure months of “Will the Queen revoke Harry and Meghan’s jubilee medals because of (recent news story)?
      The new one year review!

Or: Will ungrateful Harry and Meghan refuse the Queen’s kind gesture of medals and hurt her feelings? Giving pointless medals is ALL she has anymore…

Or how about: Will woke Harry and Meghan try to disrupt the Queen’s celebration by staging a BLM protest in the palace with their superstar Hollywood pals?

I’m not even including whether or not they’ll fly on a private plane, abandon their children in California, or refuse to bring their children to meet the queen. It’s going to be a loooooong few months.

  11. Sofia says:

I agree. Let’s wait and see what happens. She’s 95 years old and a lot can happen to her health wise. I’m not trying to be morbid, but just realistic. Again, there was hoopla for Philip’s 100th birthday and he didn’t make it so.

    • 809Matriarch says:

In that excerpt, they called everyone by their royal titles except Meghan. Spiteful to the end.

And like Sofia said above, the Queen is 95. They were planning huge celebrations for Phil’s 100th bday and he died weeks before he reached it. This Jubilee is the same way. They remind me of the parable of the rich fool who had planned to build all these barns to store his accumulated wealth and the Lord said, “Thou fool. This night thy soul is required of thee…”

  12. Noki says:

This feels like Oprah saying ‘You get a medal you get a medal and you get a medal’

  13. MY3CENTS says:

So Andrew gets a medal for not raping anyone in the last couple of years?

  14. MTC says:

yuck. Awarding a medal to an “alleged” rapist is gross. I hope the US Royals decline it.

    • Seraphina says:

I have to correct you, H&M are not US royals. And I understand your meaning behind it – I am sure it is not meant as they are US Royals. But I deeply believe that there should be no monarchy anywhere. I like to affectionately refer to them as our (US) adopted British Royals (and one is American which is crazy awesome).

  15. Who ARE these people? says:

Is it taxpayer money that funds all this nonsense?

  16. 809Matriarch says:

In that excerpt, they called everyone by their royal titles except Meghan. Spiteful to the end.

  17. Songs (Or it didnt happen) says:

Kaiser 100% has the right of it in wondering if there’s going to be any talk of “withdrawing” Harry & Meghan’s medals. For the next nine months, we are going to get at least one story a week from Les Isle de Saltine that reads, “The Queen may withdraw jubilee medals after latest slight” or “Queen upset over Harry & Meghan’s latest misstep, pondering withdrawing medals”, etc, etc, etc

    • lanne says:

As long as Pedo Andy’s getting his, the entire Jubilee medal plan will be a shitshow. I think the Jubilee is the royal family’s swan song. The power and prestige of the royal family dies with the queen. I think, if she lives to see it, the people will look back at the jubilee as the beginning of the end. Ironically, the jubilee is symbolic of an ending, not of continuity. The truly wise thing for the Queen to have done would have been to abdicate after she beat Victoria’s record. Serve as an advisor to Charles, so that he could benefit from her popularity. Charles as King with his mother behind him is much more palatable (as is Camilla) than Charles on his own. Kate and William as the new Wales also benefit from the Queen’s popularity. But the royals are incapable of adapting to change. It was good for the monarchy that Edward 8 abdicated–the monarchy could not survive a fascist Hitler-supporting king. But Elizabeth hanging on for life is a major failure to read to room at best and ridiculous hubris at worse. The UK monarchy is old, patriarchial (Elizabeth has not been a friend to women’s issues), and rigid. It will be a geriatric monarchy for a long time to come.

      • Charm says:

I always love reading your well-reasoned arguments.

I tried to glean a sense of the real betty from depictions of her by the various actresses that hv played her in movies. And while I know that no one outside the BRF really knows her, the sense I get of betty is that she’s a woman plagued all her life by imposter syndrome.

Its why she’s never done anything that she didnt think her father would do. And its why, having made that pledge at the time of her inauguration that for however long or short her life would be, she would never give up the throne (thats the truest translation), she’s still hanging on, even tho everyone can see its NOT a decision to cling to in light of the rapid changes occurring in this moment of history, not the least of which is Charles’ age. And the painfully unready alternative.

The world has changed so drastically since betty’s heyday yet she has not budged from BRF traditions.

Traditions are only as good as how they serve the here-and-now.
To their peril, the BRFirm and BRFamily have failed to learn that.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ Charm, so do I!! She and AmyToo, Becks1, and all of the usual CB’s have decided it all for us!!

By the way Liz, do you think that for the Jubilee in your honour, you could bestow your gratitude by controlling your rabid PM Boris McFcukitallup to decommission that Britannia yatch, that NO one asked for nor did you commission it’s construction. Put that taxpayer money into the pockets of HHS workers, as well as emergency staff workers too!! Just a suggestion Liz, you know. For the little people……

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ Ianne, your resolution to the Monarchy is so spot on!!! TQ should abdicate now, Chaz is ruining things now, she should abdicate and bring Chaz into the fold. He isn’t going to get a warm fuzzy welcome from TQ die-hard fans, nor the Diana fans. Chaz should look ahead and encourage her to step down. It’s an excellent idea Ianne!!!!

Someone call Chaz!! Get his arse on the phone, pronto!!!

      • SenseOfTheAbsurd says:

She can’t abdicate, that would screw up inheritance tax-free transfer of unimaginable stolen wealth seamlessly to next monarch. And that’s all this nest of vipers cares about.

      • Tessa says:

I don’t think Charles will change. He sat back and let his second son and his family leave and watched William call the shots about it. I don’t think his taking over will make much difference, under his watch I think William will get more out of control.

    • Lorelei says:

@Songs, damn it, you’re right, they will totally weaponize it, and constantly hang it over their heads, while imo Harry or Meghan could not care less. I hope they don’t even go to this thing.

      @Lanne: STANDING OVATION! 👏👏
That is legitimately one of the best summaries I’ve ever read of the situation. In a not-insane and cruel world, they’d put you on their payroll.

  18. Erica says:

Why does the queen keep celebrating her reign every five years? 75 years I sort of get, but she just had the last one 5 years ago, and 5 years before that. Just give yourself a pretty piece of jewelry and leave the whole parade stuff out of it.

  19. Over it says:

It sounds like she hands out medals to her grandchildren and family members the same way our grannies hand out a sweet from their purse. No big deal at all.

  20. Merricat says:

    This is incredibly silly. Truly.

    • Lorelei says:

@Merricat, what, you don’t think there are hundreds of different and infinitely better ways to spend the UK’s taxpayer £ right now? 🙄

  21. Athena says:

Whether happened to the big celebration for Diana that was suppose to take place in September? With Harry coming back for it.

They’re over estimating the interest in a 95 year old woman. The money should be used to hire Lorry drivers instead.

  22. Abby says:

This is so gross. To give Andrew a medal with all of his messes. To leave off Meghan’s title–the only one. This is just disgusting. It feels like a bribe to make them come back for the Jubilee.

  23. L4Frimaire says:

Why is this framed as only pertaining to these particular people if she is giving her little medals to her entire extended family. I don’t see why Andrew and the Sussexes name need to be in the same sentence.

  24. Cel2495 says:

Ugh , who gives a s*** about medals? I just hope Meghan never visits or participates in any of their bs events

  25. Stef says:

The Jubilee medals are coveted by the non-royal service members they are awarded to. My ex husband received one at the last Jubilee for being a top cop and Aid De Camp for the B.C. L. Governer.

Prince Andrew should be in jail, not awarded anything.

    • Nic919 says:

That’s the unfortunate part though. The family members get one for simply existing but everyone else had to earn it in some kind of way.

  26. Charm says:

I’m keeping hope alive……..that the only visit to the UK that the Sussexes will do in 2022, will be to pop in to visit granny on her true birthday, which is April 21, 2022, either before or after they go to The Netherlands for the Invictus Games, April 16-22, 2022……fingers crossed…..keeping hope alive.

This scenario is more likely than not, given that the Jubilee “fakakta” will be a BRF Public display kinda thing when, in fact, H&M NO. LONGER. work for the Firm and therefore, NO. LONGER. have to take part in performative public displays by the BRF (Firm and Family.)

Watch this space. Keep hope alive. LMAO

    • Lorelei says:

@Charm you are a much better person than I am. I was thinking of a VERY different reason why they might have to travel back there…and even then, I hope it’s only Harry who goes.

      • lanne says:

I almost hope that Meghan has an oopsie pregnancy and will be due about the time of the Jubilee. That would be a great reason for her and Harry to skip the fakakta mess, and would pull focus away from the big event. But I’m petty like that.

  27. Isabella says:

Giving Andrew a medal will create headlines–and not good ones.

  28. Tock says:

Will somebody please do away the sovereign grant already?
And why? Why is Pedo Andy being considered for a medal? PEOPLE SHOULD NOT HONOR THOSE ACCUSED OF SEX TRAFFICKING.

  29. Liz version 700 says:

Oh my goodness the petty. If I were Prince Harry or MM I would tell the RR to FU and ask those medals be sent by mails TU

  30. Ro says:

This isn’t even an official statement. It’s a report by the Mirror into what an anonymous BP source “is believed”to have told the Express”. The Express! The paper that just had to apologise to H&M. All this hysteria over made up titles and worthless bits of tin. I just realised how this content depletes my energy, and how many hours a day, week, month I spend reading it. I’m logging off SM. I need a real life. God bless H&M & their little family & Doria. it. May the Lord keep them safe, always. Peace to everyone here.
