Joan Collins on the Kardashians: ‘There’s an awful lot of surgery there’

Joan Collins arrives at the 2020 Vanity Fair Oscar Party held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the...

Joan Collins, 88, loves nothing more than to gossip and be bitchy about the celebrities of the day. We should make her an unofficial celebrity mascot of Celebitchy. A decade ago, she was talking about how Jennifer Aniston isn’t really beautiful, and how the only thing worth saying about Keira Knightley is that she’s thin. Well, Joan has a new book out called My Unapologetic Diaries. This time, she’s taking on reality stars like the Kardashians, and she’s still mad about Linda Evans. She’s also mad about plastic surgery, which is weird, right? Joan’s pretty plastic.

On Linda Evans: “Are you supposed to ignore somebody when they come in with tape on their eyelid?” she wrote of Evans, who starred in the ABC soap opera as her character’s nemesis. “Every one of the other actors was saying, ‘What do you think she had done?’ “

On plastic surgery: “Am I the only one who thinks there’s an obesity crisis? Those lips people have done, I think they look ludicrous,” she said of today’s trends in cosmetic surgery. “I’m sorry. And if people want to go round looking like that I’m going to laugh at it.”

Everyone talks about the Kardashians’ plastic surgery. “We all talk about it. Have you ever been in a hairdresser’s? The Kardashians, for instance. Kris Jenner, their mother, is a good friend of mine and I don’t want to be rude about her children, but there’s an awful lot of surgery there and I’ve talked to my friends about it, as I’m sure you have, the bottoms, the tiny waists.”

On Sophia Loren: Collins even took a swing at Italian actress Sophia Loren and her pearly whites, writing that Loren’s teeth “look like they have been carved out of ivory. [Loren’s] still alive. But it’s not as if we’re bosom buddies and she’s never going to speak to me again. And it’s true.”

[From The NY Post]

Again, Joan used to swing for the fences and slam A-listers. Now she’s stating the obvious about the Kardashians. I mean, she’s right? But she’s not saying anything that a million other people haven’t already said. Of course the Kardashians are mostly plastic. Ten years ago, Kim was the worst one when it came to plastic surgery and Botox. These days, it’s Khloe. And Kris Jenner too, she’s had a ton of work done. But yeah, Khloe, Kylie and Kim have had a ton of work done on their bodies.

I loathe to defend the Kardashians and their obvious surgeries-but if Joan was 28 and not 88-what would she be doing? She’s had a boat load of plastic surgery over the years-isn’t that pot meet kettle?

    • Lolo86lf says:

When Joan was 28 she was quite beautifull and young so she did not need plastic surgery then. Even older Joan would not disfigure her lips by injecting botox or fillers. The Kardashian have done procedures on their faces to the point of looking vulgar.

    • remarks says:

Maybe she doesn’t mind plastic surgery as long as it’s good? (like a good nose job, which most celebrities seem to get. I don’t know if I’ve ever really seen a bad one on a celebrity).

I do think the Kardashian version of surgery is a little weirder than doing “maintenance” where you’re sort of improved version of yourself (like Celebrity X and getting rid of some kind of lines on the forehead) but at the same time there technically might be no difference. If pressed, I probably couldn’t say why I think one is worse than the other. It’s a bit hypocritical of me to think that way. It’s probably just a matter of difference in taste (some people like those lips; others like me don’t). Maybe I figure the outcome should be better if you’re going to alter your face. But, again, that probably comes down to a matter of taste which is subjective, I suppose.

I do think it makes way more sense for a senior citizen to want to get plastic surgery (even if it doesn’t really work) to get back their former non-wrinkled face than an already good-looking 30 year old to get plastic surgery, however. When already good looking people alter their faces, I don’t get it. Kim was never unattractive so why she’s constantly updating has always been a puzzle for me.

I agree that the ridiculous lip trend is really funny looking. Kind of love that she puts it out there that she is gonna laugh at your fish lips.

  3. tanesha86 says:

Now I know Miss Collins is not throwing stones… Miss mamas has had her fair share of work done too

    • BayTampaBay says:

Thank the Lord for women like Jamie Lee Curtis!

    • Moneypenny424 says:

Absolutely, but she didn’t do it at 19, like Kylie.

I don’t know that it is better, but I think the difference is buying an entirely new face vs. trying to recapture the one you had when you were younger.

  4. Eurydice says:

Whatever Joan has had done, she still looks like Joan.

    • M says:

Exactly! She still looks like herself. The K Klan doesn’t even look human at this point. They’re like those Japanese robots.

      • BothSidesNow says:

Yup and they get scarier each time they come out of their caves. And Khloe is unrecognizable!! I don’t understand the need at such young ages. I also think that the more Botox you put into your body, the less affective it is. I would have 2 vials injected into my pudendal nerve every 8-14 weeks, for a period of. 4+ years, and it became less effective so I no longer utilize it to keep my chronic pain at bay.

      • observer says:

bothsidesnow can you elaborate on how you were using botox for chronic pain? what kind?

i also have chronic pain so i am curious.

      • The Recluse says:

The Kardashians have begun to weird me out with their distorted faces and figures. I see Chloe in her commercials and I can’t pay attention to what she’s selling because I’m too distracted by her face.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ Observer, I suffered from pudendal nerve entrapment, had the reverse surgery in 2005. But I had done so much damage to my nerve due to misdiagnosis and other issues, my nerve is permanently damaged. My nerve now has spasms which result in painful spasms and the Botox would cause my nerve to revert to quiet mode at all times, until it wore off. I am happy to help you as I have been sick for 21 years. If you don’t see this, I will watch out for you on another day!!

  5. Amy Bee says:

She’s forgotten her sister Jackie had a lot of work done in her lifetime. And isn’t see over 80? There’s no way she hasn’t had some work done too.

  6. jferber says:

Eurydice, very good point. Joan still does look like Joan.

  7. Esmerelda says:

I don’t know, I don’t like the Ks, but it’s their bodies – but yeah, considering the influence they have, they’re helping to push a very expensive aesthetic, even for people who are quite pretty to begin with and might just need some time and positive reinforcement to learn to be comfortable in their “original” bodies.
The comment on Sophia Loren sounds soooo random, poor Sophia.

    • BothSidesNow says:

And sooo uncalled for!!! Sophia looks fabulous and I don’t think she has had any work done as she seems anti-cosmetic surgery. Joan really doesn’t care who she pisses off.

  8. Rapunzel says:

She seems to talking about only lips and bottoms? The butts on the Ks are ludicrous.

    • remarks says:

That’s what I’m thinking. The shape of those bottoms clearly don’t look natural to them. Well, neither do the lips either.

      • BothSidesNow says:

Their faces don’t look normal either. I think it’s a horrendous environment that the children are growing up in as well. You aren’t supposed to walk around looking like you are 110% plastic and place your entire self into your looks. But I guess since that is all that they have to offer, this is what we are left with.

Do you guys think it’s too self absorbed of myself to get a little touch up before my daughters wedding? Nothing major, I am coming up on my big 6-0, and was thinking about it. Just a slight adjustment of having those stings placed in my face and have my Fraxel done 6 times.

      • observer says:

i don’t think it’s selfabsorbed. my mom is just over 60 and she got fillers (hyaluronic ones) for the first time. if a little ‘touch up’ makes you feel better, go for it. i think especially if you are over 45-50 it’s justified that you might want to ‘touch things up’

  9. AmyB says:

The thing for me about the Kardashians, is that they promote a completely unrealistic beauty standard, with all the extensive cosmetic surgery done to their faces AND bodies. And because they have a huge audience of young, impressionable women who follow them – THAT is fucking dangerous & irresponsible. Young girls, thinking something is wrong with them, when they don’t look like that. The Kardashians didn’t look like that 10-15 years ago either – BEFORE all the surgery!!!! If they would simply be honest about it, that would be different, but they lie about all of it! This is what I cannot stand about them!

Yes, Joan Collins has clearly had plastic surgery, but to me, she still looks like herself, as others have mentioned here.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ AmyB, thank you!!! They are dangerous to young women AND themselves as well!!

      • AmyB says:

Exactly! When they were on the Andy Cohen special, speaking about the end of “Keeping up with the Kardashians, Andy asked that very question. Do you think you promote an unhealthy beauty standard. And Kim retorted “No we don’t. We work out and eat healthy.”

Please – STOP lying! We all can see what you did, and it ain’t from working out and dieting LMAO!!

  10. RoyalBlue says:

Joan for the mascot! We need some Joan memes handy to apply for the perfect response.

  11. Gubbinal says:

Joan is correct. She’s had a lot of work, no doubt, but she has preserved her essence. Her face looks like a logical extension of her photographs from the 1950′s.

Some women start plastic surgery before they even have their own face to grow into. Hollywood has too many fine actors with bland faces lacking personality. These women try to turn into Barbie dolls which is a grotesque look. I remember Gloria Swanson in “Sunset Blvd” defending the silent films with: “We didn’t need dialogue. We had faces!” But actors need good dialogue AND real faces.

    • Concern Fae says:

This. I’m not a fan of plastic surgery in general, but cosmetic procedures to knock back aging and those to “correct” features which you feel aren’t up to current beauty standards are two different categories.

    • observer says:

“before they even have their own face to grow into” — this is so true, and very well worded!

  12. remarks says:

There’s probably push-back against the Kardashians because I’m not sure if their look truly appeals to people. It seems like people are just getting stuff to look like that to be “trendy.”

I suspect Joan’s version of surgery probably is more “timeless.” 20 years from now people probably wouldn’t look back at a photograph and think she looks unusual. They’d know she’s done something but still looks what passes for normal. 20 years from now, I could see people looking at Kim’s old photographs, however, and thinking “why?” sort of like how people look at old hairstyles from the 80s. Kim’s look seems more reliant on lip filler or BBL as a kind of trendy lipstick shade. Aren’t the Kardashians constantly pulling things and out?

  13. Barbie1 says:

Tell them Joan! Every star of her era was natural and beyond beautiful. The K’s aren’t even close no matter how hard they try.

  14. Monica says:

Joan is at the DGAF stage a woman gets to if she’s lucky enough, and I applaud her for it.

  15. Appalachian says:

The Kardashians are getting close to uncanny valley. They may look ok in photographs but watching them in motion…well, you can tell they only look good when slightly bent over.
The butts are…a lot. It’s like they have trouble standing up straight and always have tilted hips to show off what they bought. The faces don’t move like a humans face should. Half smile here, slightly raised eyebrow there. It’s all they have 🤷🏻‍♀️ They can’t afford any forehead lines, no matter how brief.

  16. Rose says:

The one that breaks my heart is Khloe. She was so naturally beautiful just on her own, and now it’s been whittled all away.

  17. terrah says:

I’ve only seen two celebs up close with plastic surgery – David Guest – Liza Minellis late – ex, and a british telly celeb called Amanda Holden. They both looked extremely shiny and strange – Mr Guest’s eyebrows were in the middle of his forehead. Ms Holden, looked pretty but slightly odd, uncanny valley-esque or like a living doll. It may be that cosmetic surgery is hard to miss when you see it in real life. It is strange.
