Joan Collins talks smack about Keira, Gwyneth, Adele & Kate Winslet

wenn3332735

I sometimes follow Joan Collins’s rantings and ravings, because she honestly doesn’t give a crap and she’ll say anything. In previous interviews, Joan gave hilariously condescending “advice” to Camilla Parker Bowles, and in an incident that got a lot of ink, Joan opined that to her, Angelina Jolie was pretty much the only beautiful movie star working today, and that Jennifer Aniston was merely “cute.” Aniston-loonies attacked Joan, but she still didn’t back down. In a new interview, I feel like Joan is trying to up her game. The interviewer asks for Joan’s opinion on several different celebrity women, and Joan’s comments are priceless. Oh, and she also talks smack about politicians and the UK’s immigration system, although what she‘s actually saying isn‘t as bad as some people have claimed. Keep in mind – Joan is 78. This is the equivalent of asking your ribald, over-it great-grandmother for her opinions on Victoria Beckham.

Joan on politics: “I’d say I was Conservative party, 1940s.” She laughs huskily; it’s ever so naughty. “And I was a very big supporter of Thatcher.” What does she think of David Cameron? “I like David, but I think he’s hog-tied by what’s-his-name.” Nick Clegg? “Yes. I’m not a big fan.” And what does she think of Ed Miliband. “Not a lot,” she says simply.

What Joan would do if she was prime minister: “First, education. I think it is shocking that 15- and 16-year-olds leave school unable to add up and with the reading ability of a four-year-old. When I was at school, I was terrible at algebra and arithmetic, but I was always the best at English and literature. And acting, of course.” She does a self-mocking “Of course I was” shrug of her shoulders, which are currently minus Dynasty-style pads. “I always did the best essays. I edited the fourth-form school magazine because, while I always wanted to be an actress, at the back of my mind I also wanted to be a dress designer and a writer, and funnily enough I have actually ended up doing all three.”

She would also tackle immigration if she was PM: “Second, immigration. Because the reason we don’t have any housing is that we have 400,000 extra people coming in here every year and doing jobs that our young people could do… In Birmingham last Christmas, I said to my driver, ‘Why are there no decorations?’ I had just come back from New York where every street is festooned with decorations. And he said, ‘Well, we have a lot of people here whom it offends on religious grounds.’ But I’m not saying any more than that. I don’t want petrol bombs being thrown through my window.”

On the London riots, porn and violence: “These kids are so ignorant and stupid. I don’t think they have much of a moral compass now because they spend their life doing – what are those games they do? The ones where they kill and they shoot? And they watch a lot of violent stuff on television.” She sighs. “And, of course, porn is readily available.” Joan, the star of such films as The Bitch and The Stud can’t “stand watching porn”, even tried getting it taken off her Sky system, “but, unfortunately, it’s part of the package”. It would never have been like that in her day. “I hear that it is far more disgusting than it was 20 or 30 years ago, and kids of 11 can watch it on their phones at school. So they are desensitised. I don’t think they have much judgment. They think that, when they kick a pensioner to death – which seems to happen on a regular basis in this country – they’re not actually kicking a real person. Violence has become normalised in this country, and I think it’s quite tragic.”

Her new book: The book puts down reality television stars, declining standards in dress (“It’s no one’s fault to be born ugly, but, honestly, must it be worn as a symbol of pride?”) and a lack of chivalry in men (“Gone are the days when a gentleman lightly took your hand in his and brushed his lips across it, or tipped his hat to acknowledge you as he chivalrously stepped aside to let you pass”). Men are turning gay because women are unfeminine. Women over a size 10 should not wear slip dresses, and nobody should show bare legs in winter. Ankle-strap shoes are “seriously unattractive”, and she advises against wearing jeans. “Rarely glamorous” is her damning indictment of them.

How Joan stays looking so young: La Collins looks incredible and you can tell this is actually because she has had no work done and stayed natural (she thinks sex is better than Botox). How, I ask, does she look so glamorous the whole time? “You think I’m glamorous today? This is all just thrown together. What I find extraordinary is that all these girls today go out in the coldest weather, wearing the shortest skirts with crop tops, no stockings and no coats.” She shivers at the thought. “But I guess they can’t take the coats in because they will just get stolen.”

On Gwyneth Paltrow: “Is she the one who called her grandmother a rude word on air?” she asks, dismissively. “I thought that was pretty shocking.”

On Kiera Knightley? “Well, she’s thin,” is all Joan will say.

On Carey Mulligan? “I don’t want to comment on Carey Mulligan,” she remarks sadly, before proceeding to do just that. “I can’t believe she’s playing Eliza Doolittle in a new movie.”

On Kate Winslet: I move on and show her a picture of Kate Winslet taken a few days earlier at the Venice Film Festival. She lets out a huge sigh. “Oh, that’s a dreadful dress. The worst dress. And ghastly shoes and an awful hairstyle. I’m sorry.” She shakes her head.

On Adele: “She’s a very good singer, very, very talented, but she has a terrible hairpiece.” Joan, a self-confessed wig wearer, knows a lot about hairpieces.

On Kate Moss: She is “OK, but she’s not Linda Evangelista in my mind”.

On Victoria Beckham: “Oh I love Victoria Beckham. You’ve finally found someone I like.”

[From The Telegraph]

What’s funny is that as I get older, I start to share some of Joan’s opinions. “It’s the porn,” I mutter as I watch CNN. “The porn, and the Christmas decorations.” Also! I love, LOVE the comment on Keira Knightley: “Well, she’s thin.” As in, “Well, at least she’s got that going for her.” I would love to know Joan’s thoughts on Duchess Kate – “Well, she’s thin. Terrible raccoon makeup. Button problem. But, she’s thin.”

    Gotta love it!

  2. rose80 says:

    @ Kaiser.. there is a story floating around that AJ got handcuffed at a premiere.

    Joking..it was about her bracelet last week

  3. k says:

    So what you are saying is that you are also a Thatcher supporter? And that “unfeminine” women today are “turning” men gay?

  4. tracking says:

    Well, clearly Kate is following La Collins’ makeup techniques. Brit raccoon eyes, maybe it’s a thing across the pond.

  5. Muffy says:

    She looks great for her age, but I would argue with the she’s had no work done, she’s 78 look at her eyes, really? I call shenigans!

  6. Dorothy#1 says:

    She looks great for 78!!!!

  7. palermo says:

    Please … she’s had a lot of work done. I think she is so nasty, always horrible to people.

  8. su says:

    really joan?
    ‘extra people coming in here every year and doing jobs that our young people could do’ STFU!

    i’m sick to death of such ignorance, immigrants aren’t stealing jobs from British citizens, its the lack of education and (in some cases) an unwillingness to do certain jobs!
    Why am I not surprised that she supports the Tories, this is ALWAYS the type of foolishness they like to bring up at elections…fyi these are the same people who happily increased tuition fees so the majority of people cant got to uni cos thay can’t afford it, therefore INCREASING the number of Britains unemployed!

    Typical tory reasoning, blame the poor and the immigrants for everything.
    And by the way, its the COUNCILS that make the decisions on whether or not to have christmas decorations- not the ‘people of other faiths’, no, the council would rather not spend have to that much money on the electricity bills and are using others as scapegoats!

  9. su says:

    as fabulous as she may be she is INCREDIBLY ignorant.

  10. Rita says:

    She sounds very current and her stock just went up in my portfolio.

  11. Roma says:

    I can tell I’m getting older because I agree with the bare legs in winter comment. I found myself last year constantly thinking “cover yourself up, you’re going to catch a cold!”

    I can’t handle pantyhose but would a pair of thigh highs kill these girls?

  12. Liz says:

    “Men are turning gay because women are unfeminine” Wow

  13. Kim says:

    She is quite smart – not ignorant at all.

    Kids are desensitized these days, pornography is seen as the norm when it IS NOT hence your Paris Hiltons and Kim Kardashians (porn stars) being infamous, education is horrific, chivalry is dead and immigration is totally out of control! And her quote on reality stars is dead on.

    I gained new found respect for Joan. She tells it like it is – like it or not.

  14. Leticia says:

    I love her! And agree with much of what she says.

  15. John Wayne Lives says:

    Joan!? Posh McPignose over my beautiful, winsome Keira?! I dump you!!!!

  16. Kiki says:

    She loves Victoria Beckham!!! It cracked me up – at work! I hadn’t had a good laugh like this in a while 🙂

  17. Melissa says:

    “and a lack of chivalry in men (“Gone are the days when a gentleman lightly took your hand in his and brushed his lips across it, or tipped his hat to acknowledge you as he chivalrously stepped aside to let you pass”). Men are turning gay because women are unfeminine.”

    In regards to that last sentence, she is 78 and sounds a bit ignorantly old fashioned.

    But I do agree that chivalry is almost all but gone (less a few great exceptions out there). But it’s also the fault of some of the women this day and age. Some women these days are not respectable. And do not deserve chivalry. It’s falling apart at both ends unfortunately. JMO

    I also agree that there is serious desensitization going on in the world. But it isn’t just happening to the kids. It’s happening to adults as well.

  18. Sakyiwaa says:

    @Rita. LMAO! ITA. I was thinking the same thing. Love how you put it!

    She sounds like a 78 year old. And is as hilarious as one!

  19. brin says:

    I love her for mentioning only the grandmother remark for Goop….snap!

  20. mary simon says:

    love her, love her bitchiness and her wit. met her at a book signing years ago in Boston and will never forget her sashaying through the crowd across the floor of the book store in a black cape and black feathered hat. I never saw a woman walk in to a room like that and command so much attention and awe. she’s taken her share of jabs over the years and it’s fun to hear her dish it out.

  21. RobN says:

    I think maybe I love her a little.

  22. jam says:

    No work done?!?! HAHAAHAHAHAHAHA. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU’RE KIDDING, JOAN?

  23. Angie says:

    Love her!

  24. Jen34 says:

    I love when old broads speak their mind, even if I don’t agree with them. My granny was like that.

  25. Sammi says:

    I’ll post an unpopular opinion and say that I don’t mind chivalry dying. Its silly to insist on equality and then turn around and harp on old traditions that have no revlevance in our modern age, whenever its convenient.

    Manners, respect for others feelings, and basic kindness to those of all genders and sexes, however, should never die. And I think far to many people think this death is what is being supported when people say they don’t believe in chivalry.

    I am perfectly fine opening the door for my boyfriend when I’m walking ahead of him, and he does the same for me when the situations are reversed. We decide who is paying for a date, based on our individual personal finances at the time. Not each others genitals.

    I find it ridiculous to suggest that because of this we respect each other less, when I would suggest the exact opposite.

  26. LadyJane says:

    No work done? Does that not throw discredit on the entire following article? The journo might’ve well as said that Madonna has had no work done. Bitch, please.

  27. Gine says:

    Eh, I think she just sounds bitter and mean. Her own acting career wasn’t exactly impressive, after all.

    It’d be nice, for a change, to hear an older celebrity being supportive of younger stars, or at least gracious, instead of whining about how their generation did everything better.

  28. fancyamazon says:

    I’m probably getting into the “get off my lawn” territory, but the closer I get, the more I find I just don’t care. I agree with her on a lot of things, not everything. I think on the gay issue, personally, IMO opinion, men are becoming more feminized because of the feminist movement. Not that women are “turning them gay” but because of women taking traditional roles away from men, many of them feel (subconsciously – they are still men, after all) that they don’t have a place in today’s world and are trying to find a new one. So they “metro” themselves…taking off more hair, experimenting with fashion more and more, and taking more traditionally “feminine” roles. Take Beiber. For goodness sake, the guy has a line of nail polish. Just wrong.

    I do not agree with her on her politics, although I do think that if we are going to solve the immigration/jobs issue, more young people need to be more willing to take “starter” and not so pretty jobs in the beginning. On the left side, however, I think we need to move (somehow) back to the notion of a “living” wage as opposed to a “minimum” wage.

    And so much more I would like to say, but this is a gossip blog, lol.

  29. Ben says:

    Gross. Men ‘turning’ gay because of unfeminine women? Not even going to touch the Thatcher love and her thoughts on immigration.

    Well whatever, she prefers Victoria Beckham to Carey Mulligan, so I think that says it all.

  30. lucy2 says:

    She’s like Mawmaw on Raising Hope. One lucid thought per every 2 off the wall ones.

  31. Sammi says:

    @fancyamazon

    Obviously you have the right to your opinion, but I am curious as to why you think men becoming more feminene is a bad thing? Women have become slightly more masculine over the past century (ie. wearing pants, working full time, etc.) by fighting for equal rights, so why should men not be allowed to evolve as well. My father has been just as capable at nurturing me as my mother, and I had a better upbringing because of it, so why should that be looked down upon. I’m not trying to attack you, I am geniunely interested in why you have that opinion.

    Also, I am pretty sure Justin Bieber has a nail polish line because his audience is primarily female, and he and his team will make more money by marketing that to 12 year old girls, than he will by marketing say deodorant to teenage boys. I don’t think Justin Bieber himself is all that passionate about nail polish.

  32. tmbg says:

    She lost me with her remarks against video games (if you’re playing a first-person shooter and can’t tell if it’s reality or fantasy, the problem doesn’t lie with the game) and jeans. As for her style advice, I prefer a Marlene Dietrich or Katharine Hepburn look over hers.

  33. Hautie says:

    “It’s no one’s fault to be born ugly, but, honestly, must it be worn as a symbol of pride?”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    LMAO! So true. Thank you Joan for saying it out loud.
    That comment also falls along the rant I have about people dressing like hell.
    I can guarantee, I will see a dozen people this Winter, roaming around in public in ratty flip flops. Bootie shorts and belly shirts. All the while it is 35 degree’s.
    But I realize I am old as dirt. But at least I make it a point to dress for my size and the current season.
  34. anon says:
    The only part of this interview that was of importance (or interest) was she HAS A NEW BOOK COMING OUT. The rest…can you say being provocative to sell headlines and get publicity…for your NEW BOOK. C’mon now people we all know how this works these days. Enjoy the PR script she acted out in the interview and take it for what it is. All she cares about is you buying her NEW BOOK.
  35. Ell says:
    I don’t think age has anything to do with her opinions, she’s always been out of touch with the real world. My Mum is a year older than her and would never be so disrespectful to other women. Joan had privileged childhood and then went to Hollywood, she knows nothing about living a normal life.
    The problem with Joan is she thinks she’s something special. The fact she likes VB over talented actors says it all, tacky.
    I’m not surprised she’s an ignorant conservative who actually knows nothing about politics, why comment on our government if you don’t even know the name of the deputy prime minster.
    Sorry for the rant but that woman gets my back up, she is a poor representative for the UK.
  36. MaiGirl says:
    This woman and Madonna always remind me of each other. They both got way further than they should with mediocre talent and lots and lots of attitude. I cannot believe that someone who wears makeup that often appears applied with a putty knife and big, fake-looking wigs has the nerve to comment on someone else’s looks or fashion choices. While she has worn some pretty fabulous things on occasion, and she has admirably kept her figure (more or less), I find her attempts to remain relevant by trashing others pathetic.
    I am also really tired of mean, nasty, reactionary people lauded for “telling it like it is” and being “fabulous”. There is nothing fabulous about being bigoted, rude, and proudly ignorant.
  37. Denise says:
    Priceless!
  38. gee says:
    Those in gross houses shouldn’t throw stones.
  39. carrie says:
    she’s entertaining in interview!
    when my cousin worked as waitor in posh restaurants in South of France,he often met her and said he was a funny b*tch(she loved young well-educated waitors)
  40. Dot says:
    @lucy2, your comment made me actually laugh out loud ,and now people are looking at me. But, anyway, my thoughts exactly. But Joan just doesn’t care any more, she’s in her late 70s and these are her opinions -take it or leave it. It’s an understandable way to be, even though I, personally, don’t share most of her opinions, and hope her beliefs are not the status quo.
    I also agree that it’s not a bad thing for men to become more feminized. Women empowered themselves by going for opportunities and freedoms traditionally only allowed to men, and it’s not demeaning for men to empower themselves by exploring traditionally feminine traits like being more nuturing.
  41. loveyourwork says:
    Joan Collins is a f*cking legend.
    “It’s no one’s fault to be born ugly, but, honestly, must it be worn as a symbol of pride?”
    BAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! EXCELLENT POINT!!!
    and
    “Men are turning gay because women are unfeminine. Women over a size 10 should not wear slip dresses, and nobody should show bare legs in winter.”
    First point – RIDICULOUS and amazing(ly wrong)
    Second two points – SPOT ON!!! I hate seeing fat people in miniskirts. Especially in winter.
  42. UKHels says:
    hideous woman, crap actress, reactionary old bag
    it’s the only thing that gets her publicity for her book I suppose
  43. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:
    Calm down, guys! Her father was E.T.
    Immigrant didn’t steal the jobs the precious children you despise, they showed up. Maybe she’d like to cover the costs that her PM Boyfriend lobbed at the students. Triple the amount, St. Joan? I don’t know, she was on Women’s Hour recently and I’m convinced that this is the end.
    Petrol bombs. If her marriage history were was stirling as her acting hi-. I’m sure she’s a peach. It just reminds me of so many women I’ve known around her age–they were smarter, more talented, more resources, despised by women for their beauty, more proficient in their lucrative careers than anyone in history, more stylish, more elegant, more poised, more self-possessed, more sought after by the opposite sex than Blanche Devereaux, more prodigious, more well-connected, more adept at multitasking–just on another plane of existence. And in your mind, crashing that self-obsessed plane would be delicious. Because how could someone so perfect be expexted to degade herself down here, and you’re so perfect, why are you so vexed?
  44. Az says:
    I love Joan Collins. This is what Madonna only wishes she could be.
  45. Nymeria says:
    If you don’t like seeing fat people in slip dresses (or miniskirts), don’t look at them. Problem solved! Holy shit, but that really pisses me off. (If they happen to be ubiquitous and the only way you can avoid looking at them is by wandering around staring at the sky, then get over yourself. People do not exist to please your aesthetic expectations.)
    I like what UKHels said: “hideous woman, crap actress, reactionary old bag.”
    And what lucy2 said: “She’s like Mawmaw on Raising Hope. One lucid thought per every 2 off the wall ones.”
    And, finally, what Ben said: “Well whatever, she prefers Victoria Beckham to Carey Mulligan, so I think that says it all.”
    Yes, Ben, it does.
  46. Camille says:
    lol Love it.
    I don’t agree with her about VB though. Can’t stand the Beckhams.
  47. werty says:
    Sammi: Youre my new hero, agree with everything you said.
    If only we would treat eachother with dignity and respect (regardless of gender or religius beliefs for that matter) the world would be a much better place.
  48. tmbg says:
    Hey, remember when she played the uppity snoot Cousin Ronnie on Roseanne? Roseanne got some good digs into her.
  49. Glyrics says:
    She should stick to opinions on current female talent… My Fair Lady? Really? Ms Androgynous (KK) as Anna Karenina, one of the most beautifully written WOMAN in all literature?
    She sucks at politics.
  50. Yessiiirrreee says:
    I’m totally shocked!
    I thought this bitter bitch was dead, already!!
    Didn’t she have a TV show at some point in the 60’s or 70’s?
  51. ddh says:
    oh no she didnt talk smack about my Adele. I’ll cut a ho! Adele can do no wrong.
  52. Cheyenne says:
    She’s had a TON of work done, who is she kidding? But she still looks damn good for 78.
    I don’t agree with a lot of what she says, but I can’t help liking her, for some inexplicable reason.
  53. Skinnybetch says:
    I would love for them to interview her again in a few years, after the dimentia sets in.
  54. Melissa says:
    I definitely agree that both sexes should show respect and manners. But i do think class and chivalry on both ends is going to pot a bit in this society. But you know what they say about opinions…..
  55. Alix says:
    Her theory on homosexuality is a bit whack, but otherwise, this old broad is hilarious. Love her!
  56. lrm says:
    i was recently at LAX and i could NOT believe how people were (un)dressed! I mean, this is going beyond the teens wearing pj’s to be comfy on a flight.
    People wear ill fitting and barely there clothing that they bought at some cheap mall knock-off shop or walmart. And this was the majority of women flying. It was frankly bizarre.
    I was nauseated by it, actually.
    Yea, i usually fly out of san diego, and recently just don’t even want to fly at all, despite a history of intl and cross country flights.
    someone said that flying is now ‘the greyhound of the sky’ and man oh man is it ever true anymore.
    hope it changes at some point and becomes more exclusive again-lol-i miss those days….
    oh, and you can dress how you want, but i dont have to respect it and i can certainly comment on it, is how i feel. so joan is just sharing her opinions, and she was asked for them.
    i think women should have dignity, grace and class….you can do sexy or mini and still look good…but most just look like trash, sorry to say.
    and i loathe so cal fashion anyway, if you can even call it that.
    • ??? says:
      I’m sorry you are disgusted by people that want to be comfortable on a flight. So I suppose you dress to the nines to fly with full makeup? That is disgusting. The mere thought that we have to dress up every day because the world is looking is so old fashioned. People are allowed to be comfortable once in a while… or dare I say sloppy? Some people do not walk around swimming in thoughts about what everybody is thinking about their shoes or dress and if they do, they need help. Joan is a hypocrite. It’s never nice to be a complete rude bitch. She can dress nice all day long. That doesn’t mean she has class.
  57. taxi says:
    @lrm – How is flying going to get “more exclusive again”?
    Go private, then you won’t have to meet the masses. Be forewarned that the travel apparel may still disappoint you.
  58. Anne says:
    She’s an old bitch. I hope she and Thatcher leave the earth ASAP.
  59. smh says:
    Well everything she said about those women was true… And she used to be much, much worse back in the day, it’s funny to see her so mellow compared to how extremely bitchy she was
  60. april says:
    She looks like she uses Botox and fillers and to me that’s the same as plastic surgery.
  61. Darlene says:
    I love her. She calls ’em as she sees ’em. You gotta respect that.
  62. Daphne says:
    Well, she was an idiot when young. She is still an idiot at 78.
  63. Dawn says:
    She needs to comb out her wig before she talks crap about anyone else’s hair.
  64. DemoCat says:
    Reading between the lines re. her Birmingham comments, she thinks there are too many “Pakis” (offensive word) in Britain, specifically, in Birmingham. This seems to be a widespread feeling in Britain. My husband is from Pakistan, and while visiting some of his med school chums in Birmingham, I was told by the wife that that area is very racist.
    Last weekend we purchased some living room furniture, and the store manager, who had a British accent, turned out to be from Birmingham. As we finalized the
    transaction he went off on how there are “too many of you” (meaning my husband) in Britain now. I half-jokingly threatened to cancel the transaction.
    On the way to the car I asked my husband if the guy offended him. He said he wasn’t, but I was livid.
    Oh – and Joan Collins can bite my size 12 ass.
  65. Liamarie says:
    she is a truly awful woman. She once told Molly Jong-Fast (daughter of author Erica Jong) that she was too fat to be on Valentino’s yacht. Molly was 13 at the time.
  66. Blithe says:
    She sounds hilarious to hang out with. But unfortunately for her, several of those actresses she’s bashing have a tremendous amount of talent–whether they’re thin or wearing a hideous dress or not.
  67. sammib says:
    LOVE her!!! She’s camp and delicious. Gold.
  68. apsutter says:
    “Well whatever, she prefers Victoria Beckham to Carey Mulligan, so I think that says it all.”
    Bingo! She sounds like a bitter old hag whose acting career was shit.
  69. Kittypants says:
    “These kids are so ignorant and stupid. I don’t think they have much of a moral compass now because they spend their life doing – what are those games they do? The ones where they kill and they shoot? And they watch a lot of violent stuff on television.” She sighs. “And, of course, porn is readily available.”
    Jesus wept. She should seriously consider working for the Daily Mail.
  70. Danziger says:
    Heh. I am 19 and I agree with her on most points. Except for video games. When I’m pissed and I want to cut some freakin’ throats, I play a video game, chill out and face the day with knowing that I have a healthy outlet for my anger and aggressiveness.
    It’s funny. I love, love and love this blog, but some of the commenters seem to have a wet cloth for a brain. And they’re happy to label everybody who doesn’t agree with them ‘ignorant’, while displaying utter ignorance and lack of understanding themselves. What the hell were you guys doing during your high school world history and social studies classes? It’s like you lack the understanding on how world works. And as for Joan’s immigration point and how some of you bark back at her.. what do you think you’re going to cross the gap of cultural and monetary differences by being nice and dishing out candy, especially if despise and apprehension can be encountered on both sides, the natives AND the immigrants?
    As for video games, this is where I tell Joan to piss off. I’m an aggressive and angry person, I’ve been such since.. forever. Shit, I was an angry suckling! I NEED my video games to release my tension in a healthy way,and so do many others. Don’t kid yourself, we humans are competitive, aggressive, and when we melt down, shit breaks loose. Video games are a wonderful invention to release that tension.
    I still love this harpy’s big mouth, I may not agree with her in all matters (because I’m a human still. I think she’s a bat or something), I love when old sassy ladies run their mouth.
  71. jh says:
    I bought her book yesterday. She LOVES Kate Middleton, she praised her for knowing what she likes, sticking to her style, and always being seen in public looking glamorous. She said that she (joan) comes from a time when going out on the street looking like you’ve just rolled out of bed was considered “bad manners”. And that she can’t understand why women don’t want to make a little effort to look pretty. I don’t agree with many of her opinions, but it’s such a funny read.
    @Sammi Sorry I didn’t come back here yesterday. There is a difference between being more feminine and being more nurturing. In general, the lines in ALL roles are becoming blurred, and boundaries are giving away. I am not talking just about masculine/feminine roles, but things like who we are supposed to respect, the places and organizations we can/can’t trust, and all sorts of traditional roles. This isn’t always a bad thing, of course, but it has, in a way, taken away some of the security that people had in knowing their place in society. Not that people are “stuck” in a class or caste or whatnot, but just a general awareness of their current place/role. I feel this has affected people in lots of ways. Some good, some bad. Like I said, this is a gossip blog, and so difficult to portray my full feelings, and ultimately pointless.
    hehe Joan is still playing Alexis Carrington-Colby. She’s 78. She can say whatever she darn well wants. I hope I have all my wits about me and am opinionated and with it at that age! Old people have nteresting views on today’s issues.
  74. Sammi says:
    @fancyamazon
    Thanks for replying, and I think I see what your trying to say now 🙂
    I was just using nurturing as an example of an instance where not always following traditional roles can turn out for the better. I wasn’t trying to make a claim about all situations involving traditional roles through an anecdotal example, and I’m sorry if it came across that way.
    I can definately see how changes in our society would be confusing or upsetting for some people — particulary in older age demographics like Joan Collins. When someone grows up with things always being a certain way, and they suddenly start to change, it can be disconcerting. Like you said, any change will inevitably effect some people negatively, but overall I think the more freedom people have to be themselves the better. As long as being who they are is not directly harming someone else, I think that, in the long run, individual rights and freedoms are more important than the sense of security we get from traditional roles. That, however, is just my opinion and others a bound to disagree.
    Perhaps I am being naive, but overtime I think these changes will matter less and less. When kids are raised without such a huge emphasis on who they’re meant be based on traits and situations beyond their control, they will be more likely too accept the current changes to our culture.
    However, I agree with you that for right now we are at an awkward inbetween stage, and many people aren’t quite sure what to do about it and where they are supposed to fit.
    I hope I didn’t come across as rude or combative in my last post. As you said, it can be difficult to fully express how we feel on gossip blogs. I really just wanted further clarification to see where you were coming from, and now I have it.
    Thanks for the reply 😀
    The things Joan Collins says aren’t cute or brave or precious- they’re obnoxious at best and racist/homophobic at worst. If some C-list younger actress was spouting this crap, we’d be yelling a collective, “bitch, sit down!” But because it’s Joan, we give her a pass, or even applaud her? You guys do know she’s not actually Alexis Carrington, right? Joan Collins was a mediocre actress and a vain, mean bitch when she was young, and apparently nothing has changed.
    What really kills me is the way Joan acts like she’s the last of her kind – the classy, glamorous actress – and mourns the good old days when “goils were goils and men were men.” Because to me, Joan acts just like the young celebutards – superficial, trash-talking poser divas with NO manners. If we are to admire a woman for “telling it like it is,” why not admire someone with manners and integrity, who is taking a stand against something that matters (as opposed to a woman’s weight or hairstyle)? Just because she’s old now doesn’t mean she’s venerable.
    Moops: I agree w/ you 100%!! WOW!! I’m so glad that you wrote these words… I was attempting to voice very similar sentiments myself, earlier, but was unable to word myself adequately, so I am grateful to you for expressing so much so well and so concisesly!! I just don’t get all the “love” for this bitter, rude ,hostile, self-centered and appallingly shallow woman. She grasps at attention for herself by putting other people down, almost solely for their physical appearances, and to the exclusion of anything else, such as talent and character– things which she has clearly never learned to appreciate or value,or even reflect on, as old as she is. What is witty, or hilarious, or courageous, about cutting other women down?: attacking and dismissingthem for the most superficial and vaccous of reasons?She gives NO encouragment or solidarity or positive inspiration to women but, rather, is the embodiment of the divisive,jealous, disloyal and undermining aspects that exist within so many women towards each other: the ultimate “mean girl” well past her date of expiration.
    In fact, Chelsea Handler–who is largely disdained on this website—does the same thing, essentially,as Joan–relentlessly, predictably bad mouthing others who are in the current spotlight—.The people who like her must be those who confuse outright meanness with “telling the truth”. And yet, while she is put down for her witlessness, cruelty and ignorance, Joan Collins is somehow revered? This woman has, as Moosh says, even at 78, absolutely *no* discernable integrity or depth or graciousness, or even originality. And, no: just b/c sheis old does not mean she is admirable.If anything, it’s the opposite: it’s *pitiful* that one could have survived *so* long as a human being in this world, and haved moved and matured and grown and deepened so astoundingly little.
    I have to agree with caitrin176 and other comments similar to hers. A lot of hypocrisy in this thread. If Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian said the things Joan said, they would be trashed unmercifully. Look, I get that unlike the two famewhores, Joan Collins actually had an acting career, but that doesn’t excuse her or make her comments worthy of praise. If she was 28 instead of 78, she would be no better than Megan Fox.
    I have a question, all of those people who like Joan Collins for “telling it like it is” or “calling it as she sees it,” would you feel the same way if she said something that you didn’t agree with?
    Somehow the “I may not like what you say, but I’ll defend your right to say it” doesn’t apply on gossip blogs.
    She is a walking example of ‘better seen than heard’ is all I can say.
    The fact that she dismisses actual TALENTED people over superficial crap speaks volumes about how ‘deep’ she is.
    OH, and as a gay man, this old c**t can go f**k her bony, corpse-like self!
