Morton: Duchess Meghan found certain royals to be ‘unfriendly & jealous’

Trooping the Colour 2018

Something is happening with all of these royal commentators and royal biographers: they’re lazy as hell and they’re terrified of simply writing a dedicated book dealing with the Sussexit and the fallout from Prince Harry and Meghan’s move to America. That’s why we have Robert Lacey and Andrew Morton “re-releasing” their 2019 and 2020 books with “new chapters.” I guess we can include Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand in there too, because they did the same thing with Finding Freedom’s paperback release. Why not just write a completely new book? I guess they’re scared that a new book would have “gossip” which would be completely obsolete by the time they got the book published. Speaking of, Morton is promoting the re-release of his 2019 book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess. We barely covered it in 2019, but Morton has added new chapters about how Meghan watched Diana’s 1997 funeral, and how… Meghan and Harry’s relationships with the Windsors were at rock bottom by the end of 2019.

Andrew Morton, who wrote a famous biography of Princess Diana with her help in 1992, has re-released a biography of the duchess. In new chapters of Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, he wrote: “It was clear that Meghan had ruffled feathers in the family and that they felt she and Harry were very difficult to deal with. For her part, Meghan found some of its members—not the Queen or Prince Philip—unfriendly and jealous. At a personal level, then, their departure from Britain was quietly welcomed by some in the Windsor family and their courtiers, but on an institutional level it was a heavy blow.”

Morton also suggested Prince William welcomed their decision to take a break at an earlier stage, when they spent Thanksgiving and Christmas 2019 in Canada. Meghan and Harry began negotiations to quit royal duties while they were on that trip, staying at a rental property on Vancouver Island.

Morton wrote: “Like many others, Prince William breathed a sigh of relief when Harry and Meghan announced that they were stepping back from royal duties for six weeks or so and spending Thanksgiving and Christmas in North America. The couple ended up in a remote luxury mansion on Vancouver Island loaned to them by a patriotic Canadian businessman. Palace aides, who had been urging the couple to slow down, were pleased to see them take a breath.”

[From Newsweek]

The thing about the palace welcoming their break in late 2019 was reported at the time. Pretty much as soon as Meghan and Harry returned from their African tour, William was incandescent with rage and H&M wanted to get some physical and psychological distance from the Windsors. That part of it isn’t some piping hot tea, unless Morton is prepared to talk about how William’s goal from fall 2018 to fall 2019 was to exile his popular brother and sister-in-law. And of course Meghan found members of the royal family “unfriendly and jealous.” Because they were unfriendly and jealous!

Morton: “Meghan found some of its members—not the Queen or Prince Philip—unfriendly and jealous.”
Anyone who has paid any attention at all to the goings-on at House of Windsor: “And?”
I do hope people aren’t paying for conclusions that have already been liberally stated across media. There really is more than a whiff of desperation from these people who pretend to be journalists/commentators/writers. They tried to kill their golden goose, but instead, the Goldens just moved base of operations and went about their lives without the “chroniclers.”

    • MMadison says:

The RR are fearful that Meghan/Harry will clear up any falsehoods in their books thus hurting sales. This issue of Meghan watching Princess Diana’s funeral: For some reason they want to make it seem that if Meghan watched the funeral she was wrong when she said she didn’t know Harry…..Hell I watched the funeral and have followed Meghan/Harry for years and I don’t know them nor did I know Diana. WTF is wrong with these people. I’m 100% certain NONE of the RR know Meghan. I’m also 100% certain that William and Kate don’t know her either.

      • goofpuff says:

Yeah seeing someone on TV or hearing about them from others doesn’t equate to actually “KNOWING” them. if she’s never met him, saying she knew him would be ridiculous. Plus she might not have been that interested in knowing the BRF because they’re general profile makes them kind of useless for her humanitarian work.

My guess was she pretty much ignored the ribbon cutter royals until she got to know Harry and realized he wasn’t one of them.

    • PrincessK says:

Well of course jealousy is at the root of it all. William was jealous because Harry was always the most popular one. The entrance of Meghan boosted this even more, which is why a terrible vicious media campaign was launched to try to destroy Meghan’s character, which succeeded in manipulating public opinion. The RF really shot itself in the foot, it is unbelievable that no one was able to step in and take control of the situation. The rivalry between Clarence House and Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace made it all the worst. You really need to go back to the Tudors to find a royal house more scandalous than the Windsor’s, and it is far from over unfortunately. William is clearly a very stubborn fellow. I actually suspect the Queen is privately quite angry with the Cambridge’s as she knows that the Sussexes could have boosted the RF in so many ways that William and Kate just cannot. But everyone has to keep William happy in order that the line of succession continues. How on earth did they think that by pushing out the Sussexes all their popularity issues would be solved…who actually advises them?

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ PrincessK, it’s not the issue of who advises them, it’s the fact that the TOBB refused to back down against Meghan and the dynamic of Meghan and Harry together. TOBB thought/thinks that his position of being the FFK was enough to warrant his popularity and accolades on doing nothing. TOBB has demanded that it’s his way or no way throughout his entire life, no matter what the results will or could be.

The Lambridges, CH/Charles, and every other vile, racist and RR created this result and they have no one to blame but themselves, all the while damaging The Monarchy. I agree with you that TQ is probably very unhappy about the entire situation, but she is to blame as well. TQ and/or Charles could have picked up the phone and called the dogs off, but they chose not to. The clear facts are that TOBB has his handprints in every action to related to the smear and destruction of Harry and Meghans characters. TOBB is truly a vile and awful person and will destroy The Monarchy.

  2. Izzy says:

And then Baldemort proceeded to leak their whereabouts to the press. It wasn’t enough that they took a break, he was so petty he wanted to make them miserable even though they were on a break.

Eff these people. Meghan and Harry are too good for them.

    • GuestWho says:

Don’t forget that Cain also leaked the whole stepping back plan to his buddy crazy Dan W, forcing the Sussexes to make an announcement, thereby “blindsiding” the family with a plan that had been in the works for months. Billy the basher is a busy, busy boy.

    • L84Tea says:

That dick move alone was unforgiveable.

      • truthSF says:

But the karma that has resulted from that unforgivable offense has been nothing but chef 💋! Billy the basher will be struggling & suffering for the rest of his life.😌

  3. Pao says:

For all this screeching about meghan the difficult, i have yet to hear what it is that made her so difficult.

    • Miranda says:

“Uppity”. The word they ever so desperately want to use is not “difficult”, but “uppity”.

      • Jais says:

The fact that she was smart, charismatic, gorgeous and beloved made her very difficult to deal with. Morton just left that part out.

      • Miranda says:

And confident! I think Kate in particular probably envied Meghan for that. I mean, after all these years, Kate still looks so uncomfortable around her own husband and usually just does what she’s told. Then Meghan comes along, undaunted by all the things that come with being a member of the British royal family, and had the strength of mind to assert her right to remain her own person. Even when she hit rock bottom as a result of the royal bullying, she managed to project a pretty convincing happy, self-assured image to the public. Hell, *I* kinda envy Meghan for all that!

    • Guest says:

This sums it up? “I am not a difficult woman at all. I am simply a strong woman and know my worth.”

    • Murphy says:

      She’s not a doormat.

    • iconoclast59 says:

Meghan wanted to do REAL work that actually impacted the lives of the people in Great Britain and the Commonwealth. She didn’t want to be performative, just dressing up in nice clothes, shaking hands and smiling.

In a nutshell, she made them all look lame in comparison. Of course they were jealous!

  4. Becks1 says:

Me, seeing this headline: GEE I WONDER WHICH ONES.

Me, reading the post: EXACTLY WHO I THOUGHT.

    • Mac says:

It was all of them. No one stood up for Meghan except Harry.

      • Becks1 says:

No one stood up for her and I don’t think most were nice or welcoming at all, but the ones in the biggest position to be unfriendly and jealous were William and Kate.

  5. Woke says:

If they aren’t willing to give us the real tea they can all keep their books. All this tip toing is annoying.

    • JT says:

Seriously. Either start dropping names and real incidents or keep it moving. I’m tired of the vague bullying nonsense and Kate’s fake tears. Let’s get into why Kate was really acting like b*tch that day or stop bringing it up.

    • Nikki* says:

That’s my take on it exactly. Either give us solid info or keep your mouth shut.

    • Sarah says:

      Exactlyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Noki says:

Add insecure and inadequate to that list.

  7. Sofia says:

I agree that this isn’t major tea but I think these books have a wider, more generalised audience of people who don’t read past the headlines or the odd article vs royal watchers like us who have been following this really closely, reading articles, tweets etc etc for 5 years (and even longer). So for us, it’s “oh gee, thanks captain obvious” but to a less knowledgeable person (in terms of royal watching) this is somewhat new (even if they knew the royals didn’t like Meghan). But then again, if you’re not really interested in the free articles about the royals, are you going to spend money on a book about them? Maybe some will (I don’t know!)

  8. Jais says:

The way this is written is embarrassing, like why are you so afraid to just say what you’re saying. William and Kate were extremely jealous. Meghan ruffled their feathers because they were so jealous and they found her very difficult to deal with because they were so jealous. They were so jealous and unfriendly that Meghan and Harry literally had to escape them by going to an isolated and luxurious island. They were so jealous that William breathed a sigh of relief when they were gone.
At least, Morton draws a line to William being the jealous one with that sigh of relief, but the rest reads like Harry and Meghan did something to be difficult when all they really did was exist and stand next to the Cambridges.

  9. MsIam says:

Difficult = won’t go stand in the corner when told to do so. I guess bullies would think a person is difficult when they decide they won’t put up with the b.s. anymore.

  10. ABritGuest says:

The royal beat is such a scam. Tom Bradby’s article in the Times in jan 2020 said that Harry& Meghan felt pushed out and found some in the family unfriendly and jealous (except for Liz and Philip). Morton has just copied and pasted that Times article. Interesting that he missed the part of the same article that said KP decided early on to put them in their place & push them out.

    • Lemons says:

Yeah, I just find this whole “copy & paste” ethos to be so egregious. Like…I want to get paid to do nothing as well! All of our comments on Celebitchy can go into a book to serve some hot piping tea!

    • Jais says:

Good catch @abritguest. The picking and choosing of details is what gets me, and you’re right, why then leave out the part about KP deciding early on to put them in their place? Is he that scared about p*ssing off the cambridges?

    • Snuffles says:

Keir Simmons from the Today Show said the same thing.

  11. Concern Fae says:

Why the updated books? They really don’t have enough for a new book, but updates are enough to keep the old version in print and selling. It used to just be done for paperback editions, but with everything being digital now, it’s not hard to add a new chapter when the book has gone out of print and it’s borderline as to whether it’s financially worth it to print another batch. It’s not so much hoping people will buy again, it’s so that new readers won’t think of it as out of date.

Also gives the author another round of publicity, interviews and TV appearances.

  12. Amy Bee says:

I mean Harry and Meghan said as much in the Oprah interview. So far, Morton isn’t saying anything new.

  13. Layla says:

Andrew Morton got lucky once with Princess Diana. Doesn’t make him the “expert” on royal affairs. Frankly he needs to shut up and Sit the f down. It’s ridiculous and disgusting to see how influential these liars can actually become. I happened to come across this podcast on YouTube called plutonium something and it was actually by two youths but what was so disgusting to see was just how hell bent they were on hating Meghan, constantly calling her a liar and a narcissist and oh how “she could at some point arrange to have an accident like Diana did because she’s that manipulative”. It’s so disgusting. And then I found out they were “fans” of one o the biggest frauds: Lady Colin Campbell 🙄 (don’t even get me started on this b*tch)
There’s also this video on YouTube by münecat tho which explains really well how these tabloids went full out to bully Meghan. She rips into so called “body language” experts. Most of it is stuff Sussex Squad already know but it’s good to see it explained somewhere else as well.

  14. Marivic says:

Kate and Sophie are the besties who are so jealous of Meghan. They can’t stand her being smart, assertive, confident, and articulate. Because they know that neither of them has any of these attributes. Meghan is loved by her husband. Obviously Kate is not. Sophie not sure.

    • PrincessK says:

Not just Kate and Sophie. Camilla, Zara, the York’s etc are all jealous of Meghan because without trying she has become the most famous woman in the world, and they know that it is going to remain that way for decades. She outshines them all in every department, brains, beauty, charisma, warmth…….

      • Jaded says:

Beatrice is the sole member of the family who seems to have forged a good relationship with Meghan. She and Harry were always close and she welcomed her into the family. The rest of that vile family can all sod off.

      • swirlmamad says:

@Jaded, I think you mean Eugenie? It’s possible Beatrice has a decent relationship with Harry and Meghan as well, but she certainly keeps it close to her vest if so unlike Eugenie has.

      • Jaded says:

@swirlmamad – you’re right, my bad. Thanks for the correction. I don’t actually think Bea has as close a relationship with Harry.

  15. Eurydice says:

To tell the truth, I’ve never understood the logic of this story. Ok, the Cambridges and Sussexes don’t get along – that can happen. So, H&M set up their separate office and separate home – that makes sense, too . Why wasn’t that enough distance? Why not a sigh of relief then? It’s not like the royals all love each other and live in each other’s pockets. Charles loathes Andrew, but he still managed to stand next to him at events and look civil (or whatever that expression is that he has on his face).

I haven’t read the recent royal biographies – have any of these “experts” ever asked why this situation couldn’t be resolved in a logical fashion? To me, the answer is racism. These reporters and biographers and experts keep dancing around the issue, inventing illogical stories, making the royals seem like a bunch of lunatics, when the simplest and most understandable answer is that they’re an old fashioned racist clan.

    • Snuffles says:

It wasn’t enough because Harry and Meghan kept outshining the heirs and wouldn’t shrink themselves for The Crown. The more successful they become, the more light they shine on how useless the royal family is. In or out of the institution.

    • Nic919 says:

I think the real reason is what Kevin Maguire said on GMB last year about certain things happening that if made public would explain why Harry and Meghan felt they had to leave and would make the public much more sympathetic to why they did. He was pretty clear that it was related to something done by the family and not the media.

      • Jaded says:

Agree. There’s something serious that happened — even Harry said “If anybody else knew what I knew, be it a father or husband, you would probably do what I’m doing as well.” Note that he says as a father or husband, not as a member of the royal family or a dedicated philanthropist. That can allude to almost anything — William colluding with the tabloids on the Meghan-smearing, William making a crude pass or sexualized comment to or about Meghan, William’s alleged affair with Rose Hanbury, but it seems all roads lead back to William, and by extension, Charles who seems to tacitly approve of the whole mess.

      • Eurydice says:

See, this is something that makes sense to me – a very specific thing, specifically targeting Meghan and, by extension, Harry. The rest is blah, blah, blah generalities that can and have happened in the monarchy throughout the generations.

  16. I’ll never forget Meghan on the visit to Morocco speaking French fluently to the schoolgirls. The girls were SO pumped to see Meghan. She was so effortless and of course that killed Kate. If I found a magic genie lamp, I would wish for insecurity to completely disappear. It brings out the worst in people.

    • PrincessK says:

Also the government of Morocco actually specifically asked for Harry and Meghan to visit and it was a super success. It also set alarm bells ringing in KP…..

      • Becks1 says:

I think that visit may have been more of a problem for KP et al than the South Pacific tour. The SP tour was a huge success and established Harry and Meghan as global superstars, but the Morocco tour was more about them having credibility WHILE being superstars. Remember they weren’t supposed to meet the king, and then he asked to meet them on their last night or something, because of how well received they were etc? That had to go over like a lead balloon in Norfolk.

      • ArtHistorian says:

If I recall correctly, the King also invited them to stay the night in his palace, which is not something all visiting dignitaries are invited to do. It was a special honour.

      • PrincessK says:

Yes, and the Foreign Office, which is heavily involved in organising these royal tours let it slip that Harry and Meghan attract the most interest from foreign governments in terms of who to invite.

The King of Morocco is a good friend to have, not only is he stupendously wealthy but he has a very surprisingly humble, kind and down to earth side. I know this from people who have met him.

I also think that William was very worried about the Sussexes getting the Commonwealth portfolio and how that would undermine his role within it. The Cambridge’s were given Europe where tours are usually pretty staid, whereas tours of Commonwealth countries are more lively and colourful and attract more headlines. I was so wanting to see Harry and Meghan do a Caribbean tour…l suppose it could still happen 😉.

      • Dee Kay says:

@PrincessK I actually do think H+M will do “tours” on behalf of Archewell, Invictus, or various other causes and orgs that they support (like maybe José Andres’s World Central Kitchen, to which they have donated millions). Many of their orgs including their own foundation do work in several countries at a time, so H+M going out every now and then to draw attention and help raise funds and awareness seems likely to me.

      • SS says:

PrincessK I would be careful about praising the King of Morocco and saying he’s a good friend to have. He’s been accused of corruption and in the middle of Covid bought a €80mm house in Paris despite the high level of poverty in his country. Morocco is also incredibly misogynistic and women’s rights are almost non-existent in practice. The King’s wife hasn’t even been seen in public for years and some suspect he’s divorced her.

  17. Over it says:

I want to know when a real journalist or media person will ask these fanfics writers who pretend to be real writers when they will tell the truth and say , yes. The family and monarchy is racist and that and only that is the reason they had a problem with Meghan, because I don’t know her, but she appears to me to be a really nice person. Who loves and enjoys working

  18. Lurker25 says:

Looking back at engagement interview, how proud Harry was to find Meghan, how great he said she’d be at the job…

Methinks our beloved ginger was very naive about his family. He was probably around when Baldy/the family bitched about Kate being useless, the courtiers kept trying to find work that she wouldn’t flub, etc.

So he naively thought they’d *welcome* the anti-Kate, thought they’d appreciate someone who didn’t suck up time and effort in coaxing, coaching, and coat-dressing; someone who could just be pointed to a task and “hit the ground running.”

He blamed the media for his press, naively didn’t see how it benefited his older brother. That “good King Harry” quality made him blind to the nest of vipers around him, bc he wanted to see good in his family.

The family’s reaction to Meghan – hating someone for the very qualities they *said* they wanted – was probably when he finally saw them. In the Oprah interview, he was talking about unconscious bias and racism and how he didn’t really SEE until Meghan came into his life… The way he said “but my GOD you can’t unsee it” – something in the deep shock in his voice sounded like he was thinking of more than just media/public.

    • iconoclast59 says:

@Lurker25, I think you’re spot-on. I feel terrible for Meghan because she’s been treated horribly — just vile. But I also feel bad for Harry, because I can imagine his hurt and disappointment with the people he’s loved all his life. This has been a very painful awakening for him.

    • lanne says:

He’s like a lot of people in interracial relationships who naively assume their parents/family/friends will be happy for them, only to learn who their said relations truly are. Once you see the racism of the people you love and who are supposed to love you, you can’t unsee it. Even if the relationship doesn’t work out, there’s no going back, really. You have seen something from your friends and family that can’t be ignored, and can’t really be forgotten. You wonder how their negativaty will manifest badly in your own life. Even if you marry someone from the “right group” later on, what other types of intolerances will they display? If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, will they sneak meat to your children behind your back? Will they say hateful things in your presence? Will they make racist or sexist “jokes” to you, your kids, your partner?

    • Kelsey says:

Oh, for sure. I believe since Harry’s had experience with the press and was aware of his own reputation he thought the goodwill might spread to his own wife too (which, in normal, supportive circles, that’s indeed how it should work). Like you said he’s witnessed his family close ranks around people they talk shit about all the time, so why wouldn’t they do it for his wife?

I think Harry’s ability to separate his family from “the firm” is an exclusive multitasking trait that only he (and maybe Eugenie) possess. I still think Eugenie and her husband were the only non-haters in that whole family. Beatrice was probably indifferent but let her parents get in her ear and moved a bit strangely herself.

But yes, how awful to have the veil lifted from your eyes, to see how your family really is for the first time in your 34+ years of life. Harry AND Meghan have sacrificed so much for each other. It really is a love story for the ages.

  19. Mooshe1 says:

I think the plan was to get rid of Meghan, which would have broken Harry and put him back as third wheel. Harry was getting too much respect between the military, Invictus, and successful and interesting tours. Harry’s US tour blew the Cambridges’ tour away. They probably thought since the UK is so prejudiced, Harry marrying a biracial woman would knock his popularity down but it did the opposite. Now the entire world was watching Meghan and Harry and the Cambridges couldn’t handle it. Harry needed to be taught a lesson by failing on his own, it didn’t work that way, and Will and Kate are never going to get over it.

    • Marivic says:

Yes, “now that the entire world was watching Meghan and Harry and the Cambridges couldn’t handle it,” the Cambridges have thrown in millions of British taxpayers money in PR and social media to demolish the Sussexes’ reputation in the USA 🇺🇸 I notice that the US press are mouthing the same storyline as the UK media. I thought US media is fair and balanced and not like the gutter UK media. The Cambridges are just horrible and evil.

      • MsIam says:

What US press are you talking about? Do you mean Us Weekly or InTouch, the ones that have been saying Kate is pregnant with twin girls for the past two years? That press, that no one listens too? Because the respectable press, and not I’m talking about anyone affiliated with Murdoch, has nothing but good things to say about them. Everywhere Harry and Meghan have been people have been happy to meet them and they’ve been treated like rock stars.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

@Marivic, outside of the tabloidesque types of media/Murdoch owned press, I’m not seeing US press mouthing the same story line as the UK media.

      • Marivic says:

        MSIAM and AGREATRECKONING
I’m happy to know I’m wrong about the US press. I’m happy to know that most of them support the Sussexes. I’ve resigned my case with the jealous and vile UK media clowns.

  20. Gorgonia says:

the cambridges remind me of some of my colleagues who don’t want to work but get angry if someone else does well the job they refused. Meghan and Harry were too bright, they overshadowed all the other members of the family, and for this they tried to destroy them. Such stupid people! The Sussexes would have been the ideal ones to attract younger people to the crown and give new life to the institution.

  21. Over it says:

Meghan didn’t find certain royals to be unfriendly and jealous, nope . Watch that wedding and I dare you to show me one from that family who wasn’t. So she didn’t need to look. They showed themselves to the entire world

  22. MA says:

Harry said they were jealous during the Oprah interview

  23. JJ says:

It was such a weird moment in my life when they decided to come stay on Vancouver Island, where I live. That area is the farm-y area I’d take a trek over to to buy things like lemon trees or native plants… and I found myself wanting to take extra walks in the regional parks around there hoping to run into them lol! Never thought of myself as a fan girl before…
