Letitia Wright ‘espoused’ anti-Vaxx ideas on the Atlanta set of ‘Black Panther: WF’

Letitia Wright

The Hollywood Reporter published a really great article full of blind items, shenanigans and fire quotes. The article is “Hollywood Battle Lines Emerge in Simmering Vaccine War” and I cannot believe we are here in the year of our lord Beyonce 2021. One good thing: I genuinely snort-laughed when I got to George Clooney’s excellent quote!! I can’t wait for you to read it. I’m also curious to hear some guesses about the lede paragraph blind item and, as always, it’s good to remind people that Letitia Wright may play a genius (Shuri) in a Marvel franchise, but she’s actually an idiot about science and she spouts anti-Vaxx talking points constantly. Some highlights from THR:

Anti-vaxx idiot blind item: In August, a high-profile actor was on the set of a film when he came down with COVID-19 and was hospitalized. The star, known to the cast and crew as being dismissive of vaccines and masks, was said to be unvaccinated. The film shut down for three weeks, but not before more than a dozen crewmembers got sick, sources say. Ultimately, the stoppage resulted in a seven-figure hit for the production company. The Hollywood Reporter is withholding the actor’s name because he didn’t flout any specific protocol on the project. The actor’s rep declined to comment.

This one is about Miles Teller: Paramount+’s The Offer shut down production in late July due to a Zone A COVID-19 positive. That positive person was publicly identified as a series star who was said to be unvaccinated. Sources tell THR that the stoppage resulted in a $6 million loss for the limited series about the making of The Godfather. (A Paramount+ rep counters that the figure was below $6 million.)

George Clooney has had enough: He calls it a “crazy” situation that some of his brethren are eschewing the COVID-19 vaccine. “It’s stupid. And it’s stupid because every generation in our country for more than a lifetime has been asked to sacrifice something for the safety of their fellow man — get shot, fight Nazi. All that anyone’s being asked here is to get a shot in the arm and put on a mask. Grow up. Get something done.”

Letitia Wright is still spouting anti-Vaxx views on the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever: While vaccine skeptics are far less likely to voice their opinions publicly, plenty of industry holdouts remain. A number of performers, from Rob Schneider (now shooting Netflix’s Home Team) to Letitia Wright (filming Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) have shared anti-vaccine positions on social media. In Wright’s case, a set source says she has espoused similar views about the COVID-19 vaccines on the Atlanta production. The British actress quietly parted ways with her entire U.S. team of representatives in the wake of a backlash over posting a controversial anti-vaccine video in December.

Sean Penn came back to ‘Gaslit’ set after demanding a vaccine mandate: Penn came back about two months later. His return was considered a compromise. (Only Gaslit’s Zone A members were required to be vaccinated, but an NBCUniversal spokesperson says there is currently an all-zone mandate until production wraps.) Penn… also stuck his neck out while promoting his MGM film Flag Day and requested that unvaccinated moviegoers skip the cinemas. “Stay home until you are convinced of these very clearly safe vaccines,” Penn told THR, adding: “We’ve normalized this notion of radical libertarianism, and it really is a violation of the idea of interconnectedness.”

Anthony Anderson is vaxxed, but he’s not judging anti-Vaxxers: “Each individual has his or her own rights. We aren’t in control of anyone’s body, only that person is. I’m vaccinated because I have preexisting conditions as a Type 2 diabetic, so I wanted to make sure that I did whatever I could to stave off this pandemic and COVID. But I’m not here to judge anyone on what they should do with their body. I can only govern what I’m doing with mine. As long as they respect me, I respect them. And as long as we keep our 6-foot distance and wear a mask, then we can interact and do what we want to do. But it’s not my place to police anyone.”

Another blind item: THR learned of an instance that saw an A-lister cut ties with a beloved yoga instructor who refused the vaccine. The star had highly recommended the guru and facilitated introductions to a cadre of fellow insiders, some of whom are said to have ended the relationship as well to protect loved ones with vulnerable conditions.

Giancarlo Esposito has a suggestion: He hopes that the unvaccinated simply avoid sets while the delta variant rages. “If you don’t want to vaccinate, go to a small island and sequester yourself. [Otherwise] you’re saying ‘F-k you’ to all you other human beings. We all have to do it if we want to live. I don’t understand how people don’t vaccinate. For me, I’ve lost dear friends, so I know it’s real. Not only in Europe but in America, friends who were completely healthy and uncompromised. The vaccine is the answer. I’m not downing anyone who doesn’t want to vaccinate. Don’t work. Go ride it out somewhere where you’re not going to compromise anyone else if you get it.”

[From THR]

Giancarlo Esposito and George Clooney are giving me Big Angry Dad Energy and I am here for it. I want Clooney to start yelling at specific actors: “GROW UP!” The blind item about the actor who cut ties with their yoga instructor… that feels like it’s Jennifer Aniston, correct? As for the first blind item… I don’t think that one is Miles Teller. The Offer (the series) shut down because of Miles, or at least that’s what the gossip was at the time. I think the blind item is about someone else. Hm…

And yes, Letitia Wright didn’t learn a thing. And I can’t believe she fired all of her American reps! They were probably trying to talk some sense into her and she just refused to listen.

  1. Oh_Hey says:

Find the bin. Throw her in. Replace her with a Michaela Cole variant Shuri. Problem solved.

    • Betsy says:

Hey! I like that idea! I’m beyond done with these fools. I’d say the same about Miles Teller and Rob Schneider (replace them with a better, less stupid version) but I don’t give a rat’s about the projects they’re attached to.

      • Surly Gale says:

Yes, but we do give a rat’s a** about the PEOPLE and THEIR loved ones they could possibly affect within the projects they are attached to.
So Yes, do the replacements, please. Replace Miles Teller and Rob Schneider with better, less stupid versions.
And yes, much as I like Leticia in her role, bin her until/unless she is willing to educate herself and speak publicly about the re-education of Letitia. Wrong to Wright…..

    • goofpuff says:

I agree with replacing her with a variant!

    • pottymouth pup says:

      I love that Idea!

    • minx says:

She is easily replaceable. I hope she comes to regret the nonsense she is spreading, but so many anti vaxxers are stubborn fools, even on their deathbeds.

    • The Recluse says:

I am surprised that Disney/Marvel hasn’t cut ties with Wright for being so problematic. Now I’m waiting to see if they do after the next Panther movie. She isn’t Boseman. He was a great talent. She’s replaceable and she thinks she isn’t. Look at who Cheadle replaced in the Marvel universe.

    • Jennifer says:

Damn right. I love the character, but recast! This one is actively harmful to health.

  2. Mia4s says:

You know I did enjoy the first Black Panther, but moving away from a hereditary monarchy would only improve things.

In other words; dump her, she won’t be missed.

    • NightOwl says:

Funny – true for Black Panther and true perhaps in real life, re: moving away from hereditary monarchies!

  3. SarahCS says:

Black Panther was amazing and I loved her as Shuri but now I have no desire to see her in anything and it’s making me feel uncomfortable about the second one.

I absolutely love those quotes, agree 100% with what they’re saying and please repeat it once more for the people in the back.

    • Char says:

This is clearly a case where fiction doesn’t mirror life, when you have an actress who don’t believe in basic science playing a science genius.

    • Ana170 says:

I really didn’t care one way or another about her as Shuri. She was too old to be playing a teenager anyway and I definitely don’t think she’ll work as a new Black Panther, (if that’s where they’re planning to go with things. I’m hoping they’ll go with Lupita or Michaela.)

  4. rawiya says:

She can go! Bye! We can have a film about the Dora Milaje instead .

  5. hindulovegod says:

Didn’t Pattinson get COVID and shut down the Batman production? I thought of him for the first one and Aniston for the yoga teacher.

    • Bryn says:

Pretty sure that was before vaccines were widely available wasn’t it?

    • corralee says:

That happened back in September of last year before vaccines. It’s looking more like will Smith.

      • hindulovegod says:

Ahh, the pandemic has completely warped my sense of time. Thanks for the reminder of that timing!

  6. LaUnicaAngelina says:

This was very interesting and totally feeling George, Giancarlo, and Sean (I can’t believe Sean Penn and I are on the same page).

  7. LovesitinNM says:

Disappointing. But also deadly. Her status and money guarantees her excellent medical care. Her fans and followers may be in a very different position.

  8. Eurydice says:

This is so weird (I keep saying that). In one of my incarnations I worked for a small production company. We made a lot of crappy movies in a lot of crappy conditions – a month of freezing rain and mud, a Christmas movie in 90 degree heat where the “Santa” had to be revived every 10 minutes, a location where the local authorities allowed only 15 minutes of shooting and only 4 people in the space because the asbestos was so bad. We worked with known actors whom everyone would recognize and yet, they were willing to subject themselves to this. My point is actors put up with a lot – why not a vaccine?

  9. Becks1 says:

I thought of Jennifer Aniston for the yoga instructor too, didn’t she say in an article fairly recently that she had cut ties with some long-standing relationships because of their refusal to vaccinate? I know we discussed it here and it seemed the general consensus was that it was someone like yoga instructor, personal trainer, etc.

I love George and Giancarlo’s comments. If you don’t want the vaccine ,then go to an island and stay there and stop putting the rest of us at risk.

    • Chicken Tetrazzini! says:

It’s definitely Aniston and I swear I read that story on CB because this is where I get all my news and notes

    • BothSidesNow says:

If only the unvaccinated would go somewhere at isolate themselves, but they don’t!! They are living their lives like there is no life and death situation, so it’s those of us that ARE vaccinated that are staying at home, like I am!! They don’t care about anyone but their selfish self! I am sick of it!

  10. Digital Unicorn says:

None of this surprises me – it makes me mad and sad that it has come to this, a situation where we are seeing diseases the kill and maim and were once thought eradicated now making a come back.

As for Wright, I suspect that her US team dumped her not the other way around. Her burgeoning career will suffer because of this.

  11. Soni says:

Letitia is a religious whackado born-again Christian. Like the most stupid and crazy type.

    • Annaloo. says:

The problem is that “eternal life” belief. They feel like if their time, it’s their time. I don’t follow their religion at all, and dealt w this when I went to see my family who are all devout, and mostly unvaxxed.

What I find most unforgivable amongst the unvaxxed is the LYING. Recently, an unvaxxed friend did not disclose his vax status honestly, and I found out from another he was anti vaxx . He put us BOTH in a dangerous situation of meeting indoors. At this point, I’d rather know you’re not vaxxed and we work around it (or give me the opportunity to decline meeting with you) than to just LIE. You have no right to believe our relationship can continue if you lie to me about a highly contagious, airborne disease.TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE LYING THESE DAYS

      • kimmy says:

        EXACTLY THIS @Annaloo.

Personally, I’m so over the anti-vaxxers. You can’t fix stupid. My family is vaccinated, but my two children who are under 5 are not vaccinated. FOR THE LOVE….JUST WEAR A MASK AND KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. THAT’S ALL I ASK!

    • Z says:

Yep, she’s retweeted stuff from an “ex lesbian” pastor lol.

  12. FF says:

Ok, but is she refusing to get vaccinated? The article doesn’t say anything concrete, just implies.

She was pictured wearing a mask near the set, so we’ll see later on when this roll out occurs what will happen. If they think she’s a money-losing liability then they can age up Shuri with a new actress but frankly if they aren’t firing Teller and he wasn’t part of a billion-dollar franchise but might have created a million-dollar loss, then I don’t see why they’d fire her. I also doubt she’s the only one on a Disney set with that opinion.

And while I certainly don’t like that opinion, and I wish she didn’t have it, I’ll need far more receipts then that before I dunk on her or on BP2 – she sure as hell isn’t the whole film. Too many people are working hard on that film.

As, I said before if they feel they need to they’ll write her out. I honestly feel like she’s around a lot of anti-vax spouting religious types in her personal life and that’s (a shame and) what she marinates in.

    • Snuffles says:

We don’t know what plans Marvel had for the character of Shuri. With Chadwick gone and the fact they decided not to recast T’Challa, that means a new person must take on the Black Panther mantel. In the comics, Shuri was one of them. And they might have planned on passing it to Shuri. Now if Shuri is supposed to carry the franchise into the future. Then I can’t she Marvel/Disney wanting to carry such a liability. Also, I believe Disney recently decided to mandate vaccines for all future productions. Leticia is toast.

As far as other productions go. Now that the vaccine is widely available, no production will want to take a potential financial hit with delays because an actor or production staff caused a shutdown. And they’re probably not to far off from refusing to insure actors who don’t get vaccinated. If an actor isn’t insurable, the can’t get cast. They will lose work.

    • CoffeChamp says:

FF, I agree exactly on your thoughts here and the 3rd paragraph especially.

    • Kkat says:

Eh she’s also a POS for her homophobic, trans phobic views and her Q views.

She has tainted any future black panther movies for me and I loved black panther. I saw it 9 times in the theater.

  13. Nanea says:

Sadly Letitia made remarks that put her firmly in camp Quanon before she was anti-vax.

And before that she was proselytizing about her faith, in the same vein as worst Chris.

So she’s a lost case, no matter how good her acting.

  14. Snuffles says:

She can EASILY be replaced. She was acting up long before the started filming. I’m hoping Kevin Feige took that into consideration and had her written out of the franchise. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is probably going to change everything in Marvel anyways. It would be very easy and plausible to phase Leticia out.

  15. Milygu says:

I’ve got two kids too young for vaccination. This whole disaster could’ve been over months and months ago, and children like them could be living their lives normally, if it wasn’t for these selfish assholes. I’m sad that Covid has taught them, earlier than I would’ve liked, that a lot of their fellow humans are straight garbage.

  16. Case says:

I’m fully with George Clooney and Giancarlo Esposito and love what they both said. I’m pro-firing anyone who thinks their personal freedom and “research” is more valuable than other people’s lives. Not only is not getting vaccinated dangerous, but in the case of Hollywood it is also very costly as getting sick means shutting down production!

  17. ReginaGeorge says:

I never liked her in the role of Shuri anyway. Shuri was supposed to be a teenager and I’m sorry but Letitia looked way too old to play her. This is just another reason for me to not care if they replace her.

  18. Mel says:

Fire and don’t hire the unvaccinated, these people also tend to be very cavalier about masks and distancing. If they want to get sick, fine, thy don’t get to expose others. I thought Leticia Wright learned her lesson last year, apparently not. Fire her.

  19. NCWoman says:

It’s time to judge. Anti-vaxxers are straight up murderers at this point. Some of them will be killed by COVID themselves, but they will all murder someone along the way. There was a COVID study of a wedding, and people 240 miles away ended up dying because of how this disease spreads. Public health matters, Your willingness to murder people for your own “feelings”? That deserves shunning and censure.

  20. lucy2 says:

Every production needs a mandate on the grounds that people are not insurable if they are not vaccinated – we see it happening in real time, productions shutting down, money flowing down the drain. Enough. All businesses really need to lean on that, especially here in the US where our health insurance is usually tied to employment.
I like Giancarlo’s idea – don’t want to vaccinate? Fine, go home and don’t come out for a long time!

  21. Rapunzel says:

Use multiverse to bring in an Erik Stevens who was from a universe where he was good, and have him take up the BP mantle. Shuri distrusts him because of the Killmonger she knows but then learns to trust and dies helping him. Michael B. Jordan as the new lead. Letitia Wright’s Nakia as his sidekick. Boom. Problem solved.

Or M’Baku takes up the mantle. Winston Duke ftw.

  22. L4frimaire says:

I remember her last shenanigans and disappointed she didn’t learn anything. Disney will shelve a star who does not toe the line. Look how they came for Scarlett Johansson, and she is a megastar, way bigger than Wright. I never warmed to her because she’s also homophobic and the ignorance is very off putting, abd no one on set is asking for her opinions. Also, the fact she fired her US team or they quit is not a good sign. She may be getting incredibly bad advice. However, there is a lot less grace and tolerance for women, especially women of color, who are labeled “ difficult”, but putting a heat score on her career shows an immaturity that is hard to defend. I noticed she is the only anti- vaxxer named in that article. The other ones (males) are given anonymity. The last few times Wright has gotten press is due to this anti-vaccine issue, not her upcoming roles, her beauty routine or charities she supports. Not the best reason a young actor wants to be making headlines.

    • The Recluse says:

Disney bounced the actress who was in the Mandalorian because she was unrepentantly toxic on social media (being a Trumper) and just as they were potentially building up a series with her as the star. Wright can get bounced too if she doesn’t show sense.

  23. Grant says:

Okoye for Black Panther. OKOYE FOR BLACK PANTHER!!!

I never thought I would see the day where I was cheering on Sean Penn but here we are…

  24. Des says:

Both sides of this vaccination debate is unhinged. We have people who have various reasons for not wanting to be vaccinated. Some have made it an emotional/political issue about rights; others believe in conspiracies; and there are also those who may have legitimate concerns. I don’t think it is ok to malign people who are unvaccinated as if they are the cause of this continuing pandemic. Our leaders were overly optimistic in lifting COVID restrictions when people should have stayed masked and socially distanced for longer.

I know someone who has had bad reactions to vaccines (cardiac issues). I know someone else who took one of the mRNA vaccines and had nerve deadening that hasn’t gone away.

As someone who works in health sciences, I’m perhaps more aware than most the LIMITS in the knowledge of our current science. RNA technology is a new field and we are only starting to understand the MANY functions and interactions of RNA in our bodies. While our current science can claim mRNA doesn’t affect our DNA, they cannot account for how these new vaccines react with other factors in our bodies, like other RNA, enzymes, etc. RNA plays many roles in activating and deactivating gene expression for example (see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RNA_activation).

In eastern culture, we have the story of 4 blind men and an elephant. Each feels a different part of the elephant and imagines the elephant differently. We do not know what we do not know. We should be aware of what we do not know with our current science.

It can be quite logical to be concerned about the vaccine. That should not be diluted by people who have illogical reasons to be concerned.

    • searchlight soul says:

This is total crap. PhD in molecular biology here and I was working in (barf) biotech 20 years ago and working on mRNA, mostly as a pathway to Hepatitis C treatment.

    • kif says:

Agree with @searchlight. You are full of it @Des. Please stop spreading misinformation. Hundreds of scientists had worked on mRNA vaccines for DECADES – long before the coronavirus pandemic which helped bring about a breakthrough. Moreover, wikipedia is not a good reference.

    • whatWHAT? says:

“Both sides of this vaccination debate is unhinged.”

no. ONE side is not listening to science. that side is “unhinged”.

your “I know someone who…” means jack sh*t in the science world. that’s called anecdotal evidence and is not used in science. but hey, as someone in “the health sciences”, you should probably know that.

and mRNA has been researched and studied for decades, hardly “new technology”. as someone in the health sciences, you should probably know that, too. I also find it interesting that you used Wikipedia (snortlaugh) for a source. as someone in “the health sciences”, wouldn’t a source like the CDC or NIH be more reliable/legitimate/credible/trustworthy?…

what field of “health science” are you in? “wellness”?

    • Willow says:

I am NOT in the health care field and I learned everything I needed to know about viruses, vaccines, DNA, and RNA over 15 years ago in a Biology 101 college class. Maybe you should have done less partying and more studying.

    • Kkat says:

@des FO antivaxxor. mRNA has been around for decades, it is not new.

No one is telling the people who have LEGITIMATE medical reasons to get the vaccine. That’s why herd immunity is so damn important. Its to protect the sick and too young among us.

The only side that is unhinged is the incredibly selfish people refusing to mask and get vaccinated, they are murdering people.

  25. Beth Coffey says:

How embarrassing to be grouped with Rob Schneider.

  26. theotherViv says:

So tired of having to listen to this crap. A formerly good friend told me we vaccinated are all sheep who are handing over our lives to the government using vaxx passes to control our whereabouts like Third Reich Nazi regime. I then offered to have my uncle (who is a doctor) vaccinate her without having to record it or issue a document. Problem solved, right? Far from it. She then told me that the vaccinated are super spreaders and represent the majority of those dying of Covid. I was speechless. I asked her what kind of research are you basing this on, have you actually ever been to an IC unit and received such info? Her answer: I know THOUSANDS of hospitals this applies to. WHAAAAAAAAAAAT? This is even worse than Trumpers thinking Trump never lied, ever.

  27. CoffeChamp says:

Giancarlo Esposito is a national treasure.

  28. Ameerah says:

I don’t think she fired her reps. I think they fired HER. Which is why it was kept so quiet.

  29. Stacy Dresden says:

Anti Vaxxers should not be promoted to celebrity. No. Eliminate her role.
