Maya Hawke: My parents didn’t want to ‘have me do bit-parts in their movies’

I enjoy Maya Hawke and find her funny. Other people disagree! She’s the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, and generally the rule for second-generation/nepotism celebrities is that they spend a lot of time whining about how they’ve “earned” their easy career advancements and all of their opportunities. Maya’s not really like that, although people did think she came across as rather blithe and ignorant in that one interview. Anyway, Maya is promoting Stranger Things and Mainstream (her new film) and she chatted with the Guardian:

Whether people are too reliant on their mobile phones nowadays: “I’m sure they are, but it would be hypocritical of me to be judgmental because I love my phone. I love that I can go for a walk, put on headphones, listen to Phoebe Bridgers, feel melancholy and cry. I love that I can take a bath, play an audiobook and learn about neuroscience while I wash my hair. For someone who travels all the time and hates being alone, that connectivity is awesome. I use my phone all the time but I’m sure it’s rotting my brain and separating me from real connections. For my generation it’s hard to know life without it and what we’re missing out on.

Whether her parents approve of her career: “They were wary of the public life side of acting and the difficulties of that. They also tried to protect me from falling into acting. They wanted to ensure I had a strong enough backbone, my own passion for it and work ethic. They didn’t want to cart me along every red carpet or have me do bit-parts in their movies. Once I was old enough, and it was clear they were my choices, they were very supportive.

Her favorite of her parents’ films: “It’s funny, I haven’t seen them all. Sometimes you don’t really want to watch your mom getting shot or your dad go through painful emotions, even though you know it’s pretend. So mostly I only watch the happy ones. One of my favourite movies of my mom’s is The Producers [Susan Stroman’s 2005 remake of Mel Brooks’s musical], where she’s dancing around being fabulous. That’s much more fun to see than John Travolta jamming a needle into her heart.

Whether she’ll work with Quentin Tarantino again: “There are always rumours about that. Quentin is on his own darn schedule. He’ll do what he wants when he damn well wants. But I’ve known him my whole life and if he ever wanted to work with me again, of course I would love to.

“For my generation it’s hard to know life without it and what we’re missing out on…” Yeah, that’s the thing. They’ve grown up feeling like their phones are an extension of their bodies. I hate that for the youths. But this is very pointed: “They didn’t want to cart me along every red carpet or have me do bit-parts in their movies…” Hello, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. I mean, every celebrity parent is different, and lots of celebs think it’s cool to give their kids jobs or roles on movies. It’s kind of remarkable that Ethan and Uma didn’t do that – they’re the exceptions to the rule, not the rule. Maya’s first credit came when she was 19 years old.

She is super cute and I appreciate how she’s like “Nope. Don’t want to watch my mom get her heart jammed with a needle in a movie.”

I mean, not that it matters, but she is beautiful. I almost forgot what beauty looks like because everything is so instagram now

Hello Eva Amurri who is required to play Young Susan Sarandon in all Susan Sarandon movies. I actually don’t mind Maya Hawke. I actually thought she did a good job as Jo in the BBC Little Women.

I love her. She seems funny and down to Earth.

  6. Valentina says:

Kinda funny how Maya is more relevant and talented than Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s kids ever were.

I actually loved that interview. And I feel the same way about my tech and I DID grow up without it. I don’t chastise the younger generation for their online habits because they grew up with it. I envy them. Telling them otherwise sounds like every older generation which came before, (I had to walk miles to school, uphill, in the snow, barefoot). Our childhood didn’t have tech. Theirs does. That’s what we go on, that’s what we build upon, that’s where our teachings should be based and diminishing experiences is reprehensible, selfish, hypocritical. I refuse to sound like my parents and my parents’ parents, on and on lol. She’s absolutely right. It’s awesome to learn anything while bathing or watching YouTube recipes while cooking, listening to…. ANYTHING while exercising, on-the-spot definitions, alarms, schedules, medical alerts… it’s endless. She’s refreshing.

I loved Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke as a couple and I strangely am happy their child has grown into an interesting person in her own right.

It wasn’t just one interview she complained about the nepotism thing? It was many interviews. She’s pretty tone deaf and spoiled.

Yes, it’s linked up top. She sounded entitled in her last article, but she sounds tamer in this one. Plus she looks just like her dad.
