Keanu Reeves on the MCU: It would be fun to be a part of

You would think Keanu Reeves has enough franchises under his belt, but it looks like there’s always room for one more. While walking the Green Carpet for the opening of The Matrix: Resurrections, someone asked Keanu if he had any designs on entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Keanu was both surprised and stumped by the question, but he didn’t say no. In fact, what he said was that it would be a lot of “fun” to be in the MCU. So, maybe?!

Keanu Reeves is one of Hollywood’s most celebrated action stars, and with The Matrix Resurrections bringing him back to the world of sci-fi extravaganzas, the cry for him to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been ringing out amongst his fans.

As it turns out, the 57-year-old superstar is more than open to the idea, although he’s not quite sure how to make it work.

Reeves walked the neon green carpet at the premiere of The Matrix Resurrections at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, Calif., on Saturday, and he stopped to chat with ET’s Matt Cohen, who asked Reeves about comments the actor made in November about wanting to work with Marvel.

When asked where he could see himself fitting into the MCU, Reeves admitted, “Oh my gosh, I don’t know! I actually don’t have an answer.”

“There’s so many wonderful films and filmmakers and artists participating in those films,” Reeves shared. “It would be fun to be a part of.”

However, he is set to star in and produce a live-action adaptation of his comic book, BRZRKR, and will also voice the main character in an anime series. Both projects are being developed by Netflix.

To give a little more context, this came up because in his Explain This interview with Esquire, Keanu was first asked if he would be a part of the MCU. At that time, Keanu talked about how impressed he was with the stories and directors. He was quite complimentary, discussing about how they were doing something no one’s ever done. He lit the match on this line of questioning by saying, “It’s special in that sense in terms of the scale, the ambition, the production. So it’d be cool to be a part of that.” It could just be a beautifully diplomatic answer. We expect nothing less from Keanu. He’s not someone who would trash another franchise. Nor is he going to (correctly) state, “what the hell do I need them for, have you seen how well I’m doing without them?” Plus, I agree with him, it looks like it would be fun to be a part of the Marvel Universe. It’s hard for me to believe that Marvel has never approached Keanu or his people before now. If they truly haven’t then they are not the master tacticians I thought they were.

However, as several outlets have pointed out, Keanu is awfully familiar with the MCU. Plus, it’s the holidays so let’s pretend this is classic Marvel question evading and they’re currently finding the right fit for him. It could be a small, mysterious, puppet-master role, like the one Julia Louis Dreyfus is enjoying. Or a one-off villain role, like Robert Redford. There’s room for you Keanu, we will always make room for you. I’d love to see Keanu pop into the Marvel-verse (credit: Keanu) but I don’t need it. There’s plenty of other stuff to keep him in my sightline. And now he has a comic book out, which intrigues the heck outta me. Did anyone watch Stephen Colbert on which they discuss that the artist reinterpreted “Sad Keanu” in a drawing? Does anyone live a more meta existence than Keanu? I swear, if he does show up in the MCU, he’ll be named John and his entrance will be him exiting a bus with a Sandra Bullock movie advertised on it.

There was talk, long ago, of Keanu being Dr. Strange. It never happened. Personally, I can’t think of a character he’d fit for Marvel. But it would be fun to see.

  2. Esmerelda says:

He did Constantine, back in the day… Is that a Marvel character?

  3. Lightpurple says:

Kevin Feige, you have your assignment. Cast Keanu now.

  4. ncboudicca says:

I don’t have anything insightful to say, but I love Keanu. Please never stop writing pieces about him!

^this! I admire the way he moves through the world. I wonder if my 13 year old would like the comic book.

      • notasugarhere says:

In reviews it is said to be pretty violent. ex. KR said in interviews the comic is an examination of violence.

      • observer says:

not all comic books are for kids but some kids are mature enough to understand those comic books anyway.

i’m planning to read it myself but it clearly is not targeting anyone below the age of 18

I still remember laughing myself silly over that ridiculous K & P film Keanu, about a much beloved and possibly magical cat. When the cat named Keanu started talking in a ‘wait, is this a hallucination or is this really happening?’ moment and – spoiler alert –

the cat was voiced by Keanu Reeves, it was absolutely perfect and such a great
    KR moment.

    • Fuzzy Crocodile says:

I love that movie. Saw it in the theaters – feels like eons ago.

I am not a huge Marvel film person – but will see anything remotely connected to Keanu so…

  6. TigerMcQueen says:

I saw Keanu in real life when he was filming in the city I lived. He was just hanging out with a few people, going to a movie at a local art house theater, and he is literally the most beautiful human being I have ever seen. He was just pretty. So much prettier in person than on screen.

I think the MCU should have him do a cameo in every movie. Like Stan Lee, and even though Keanu is in no way connected to the comics the way Lee was, I’d personally love it because he is simply awesome (and pretty).

  7. WhoElse says:

    Gambit.

  8. Sierra says:

I always wanted him as Kro though.

Plus Kevin Feige said years ago that they are trying to find the perfect role for Keanu.

Hecate, you are a writing treasure.

  10. FF says:

Kevin Feige already said while ago that they were working on getting Keanu into the MCU; it’s just a matter of finding right character for both sides.

  11. Call_Me_AL says:

Beautiful man. Is he still dating the lady he was with a while back? Haven’t seen her in a bit.

  12. jferber says:

I will love this man forever. He never put a wrong foot (unlike Kate or Gwyneth).
