‘Mass exodus’: Five of Boris Johnson’s senior aides resigned in the past 24 hours

This week, Boris Johnson had to fauxpologize for the sixteen boozy parties thrown at 10 Downing Street, all of which involved Boris and/or his senior aides and cabinet ministers. The parties happened during 2020 and 2021, before there were widespread vaccinations and during the time that the UK was under very strict lockdown protocols. Boris was telling people not to socialize, not to see their families for Christmas, not to go to pubs, and the entire time, he and his staff were throwing ragers every other week night. In the wake of Sue Gray’s report and BoJo’s apology, four Tory senior aides have now resigned, all in a row:

An exodus of senior officials from 10 Downing Street on Thursday deepened the crisis engulfing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as he fought to hold on to power in the wake of a scandal over get-togethers that breached lockdown restrictions.

Mr. Johnson’s chief of staff, private secretary, communications chief, and head of policy all resigned, leaving the top of British government rudderless at a time when Mr. Johnson is struggling to avert a mutiny in the ranks of his Conservative Party. About a dozen party lawmakers have called publicly for a no-confidence vote in the prime minister.

Some of the departures fulfilled Mr. Johnson’s promise to overhaul the Downing Street operation, following the release of a government report on Monday that criticized the office for “excessive” workplace drinking, citing 16 social gatherings — some of them now under police investigation — during periods when England was under strict lockdowns.

But the resignation of his policy chief, Munira Mirza, carried an extra sting. One of his longest-serving and most influential aides, Ms. Mirza sent the prime minister a sharply critical letter in which she said he made a “scurrilous accusation” against the leader of the opposition Labour Party, Keir Starmer.

[From The NY Times]

BoJo’s Tory allies are blanketing the British right-wing media to claim that these resignations are not a “mass exodus.” There are some claiming that this is actually BoJo’s call, that he’s been “cleaning house” and asking problematic people to resign. While that sounds ass-covering, I kind of believe it. Boris Johnson seems exactly like the kind of man who would go around, firing subordinates and blaming them for the parties as opposed to owning his role in the debacle and resigning in disgrace. I wonder if the resigning staffers will get a going away party! (Oh, and a fifth staffer just resigned this morning, lol).

Mic Wright on twitter commented that Boris will just be left with Carrie and 15 soft toys on secondment from Prince Andrew’s bedroom by the end of today!

  2. Jay says:

Do we think that Boris will try to claim these resignations as a good thing, cleaning house and getting rid of the “bad apples”?

And I don’t know that those jumping ship now should be admired too much, to me it’s a little like all of the former white house staffers who were critical of the orange one only after he left office. It’s a lot easier to take shots in a resignation letter than when you are riding high.

my thoughts exactly. they had no problem with his xenophobic policies before but it’s only when they weren’t invited to a party they decided to up and go. they are all gross.

Good one Kaiser, gave me a little chuckle!

If Boris is doing this… it still looks bad. Everyone’s first thought is what don’t we know and how soon will we know it.

Well 3 of the 4 who went yesterday could be said to have been a clearing house exercise. But Munira Mirza (a quite dreadful woman) has been a long time supporter/employee and that has certainly damaged him.

  6. Jais says:

So would the house have to vote no confidence for him to leave? Not sure exactly how that works as I’m not from the uk. Doesn’t seem like he will resign. He’s quite defiant for someone who’s done all he’s done. Ugh.

    • Jane says:

54 Tory MPs have to submit letters of no confidence in him for there to be a no confidence vote, and we’re nowhere near getting that number. Fewer than 20 have been submitted so far, at least as far have been publicly announced. And if even if the required number is reached and there is a vote, if he wins they can’t do anything to him for a certain period of time after that. None of the opposition parties or the electorate have any power here at all. We’re stuck with him until the Tories decide he’s doing them more harm than good (they’ll keep an eye on their polling numbers in the run up to the next general election, currently scheduled for 2024). Not even the Speaker of the House is intervening about his habitual lying in Parliament, although he’s quick enough to jump on other MPs such as Ian Blackford when they accuse him of lying. It’s an utter shitshow.

The corruption of conservative parties is stunning.

    • Jaded says:

Bojo won’t resign, he’s too full of hubris to go quietly away. Any MP can propose a no confidence motion, but there’s no guarantee their request will be granted. However, if the leader of the opposition (Keir Starmer) introduces the motion, the government will have a debate on the issue or issues raised by the opposition leader — in this case there are “issues” but I think Partygate is the straw breaking the camel’s back. He’s gunning for Bojo’s hide, especially now that Bojo recently made a discredited claim that Starmer failed to prosecute Prince Charles’ good friend and rampant pedophile Jimmy Savile when Starmer was director of public prosecutions. It’s a dumpster fire inside a train wreck inside a plane crash basically.

Rats off a sinking ship let’s hope!

  8. Mar says:

When does the reckoning come for our politicians that did the same? The ones who blatantly flouted lockdown rules while trying to enforce them for everyone else?

  9. RoyalBlue says:

Once he can still command the support of the majority he can stay.
