Zoe Kravitz: ‘Superhero films can go so horribly wrong in general’

I enjoyed the heck out of the promotion for The Batman. One of my favorite things is seeing how Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz have interacted with each other. Sure, they’re playing up the “Bat and the Cat” chemistry, but they seem to genuinely enjoy each other in a respectful way. Like, they’re genuinely friendly. He thinks she’s very cool and she seems to adore him. They both have romantic partners, but Suki Waterhouse and Channing Tatum have not been included in the promotion or the premieres. That’s by design – the studio is really trying to sell Rob and Zoe’s chemistry. All that to say, I love these Wonderland covers, especially the one of the two of them on a rooftop in LA. Here’s Zoe talking to Rob about auditioning for Catwoman after she learned Rob was playing Batman:

“I was in competitive actor mode! I was like, ‘I wonder who else was out for that part?’ I knew a few people who had gone out and tested for it too so I was comparing them to you – as you do [laughs]. And then I felt really comforted by that too because I think you have really, really good taste and I knew The Batman was going to be different from the [superhero] films I’d seen before, and protected from being too… I don’t know, cheesy, you know what I mean? Superhero films can go so horribly wrong in general. But I think [the roles] are what both of us are looking for in terms of art and the artists that we want to be. I think you’ve done a really incredible job at navigating your career and working with up-and-coming directors, writers, and searching for things that interest you – and taking really big risks as you go. You make really bold choices as an actor. I’m honestly blown away by you when I watch your work. I’m like,‘ Oh, my God, Rob’s like a really good actor.’”

I do think that Rob’s actor contemporaries were probably surprised that he would sign on to play Batman. Rob has been on such an arthouse beat for so many years, it was sort of bonkers that he was like “okay now I’m going to do this huge studio film and play a noir Batman!” But it does work. And I love how much Zoe is hyping him, it’s very cute.

When I see Zoe’s face, I see her gorgeous grandma, Roxie Roker. Lord those genes are strong!!!

I was really surprised at how much I liked The Batman. The whole noir aspect to it worked really well, and I thought both Pattinson and Kravitz were very good in it. I did think it was surprising that he was back in a big franchise movie like that, but it definitely worked.

I really enjoyed The Batman and am glad I made the decision to watch it in the cinema. Yes it’s dark in story and look but I see where it’s going. From hopelessness to hope and Bruce Wayne/Batman coming to the realization that Gotham doesn’t just need a policing but love and hope. I think that this is Zoe’s best work and that the two actors bring out the best in each other.

I really enjoyed detective Batman! I wish Rob and Jeffrey Wright had done more promo together because their relationship in the movie is arguably more important than Batman-Selina. Just my opinion!

Also, I think it’s incredibly interesting how Rob can be so open (“so open”) about his partner now without the whole press tour devolving into reporters asking invasive questions about his personal life. I kinda caught up on his art house flicks after Batman and the Safdies described him in an interview as a traumatized war veteran. I wonder if his press team just has better boundaries for him now, or if the media as a whole is movie away from that kind of salacious/misogynist gossip. But even when he was with fka twigs, that Howard Stern interview was the first time he’d really talked about her and they broke up later that year. Idk. Just interesting. They haven’t talked a lot about Zoe’s personal life either.

I’m so on board with this! Also thought Rob & Jeffrey had the best chemistry & scenes. Loved their scenes together – they bonded very well. Rob is a talented actor and I’m glad he decided to branch out to a serious franchise, but he kills it every time he is allowed to get his crazy, weird on in indie movies. Looking forward to what Rob will do with the Edward Ashton character in Bong Joon Ho’s next film – Mickey7. It’s right up Rob’s alley as he will be playing himself as multiple Mickey’s….at least 8 Mickey’s. 😃

I liked them both in their roles and liked the movie for the first two hours but it was way too long in my opinion. Both my husband and I ran out of steam by the end.

    She’s annoying AF

“what both of us are looking for in terms of art and the artists that we want to be”

This quote is hilarious. It’s commerce. Nothing wrong with that but let’s not pretend. Studios are recycling superheroes because they’re risk averse.

I finally got to see this movie last weekend. My expectations were high because I really liked the Dark Knight trilogy, a lot. I also hate-loved twilight.

I’ve got a lot of respect for Robert Pattinson as he’s continued as an actor. I feel like I’ve watched him grow up and get better and better. While I think The Batman was too long, and a little too serious, I appreciate that Rob approached this iconic role with what felt like respect. He was SUPER SERIOUS batman and emo Bruce Wayne, which actually made me laugh a little bit. But he tried. I think that Zoe really made the movie though. There has GOT to be some camp, and Penguin can’t do it all. Every time she was on screen the mood was better. I liked their chemistry.

Overall I liked the movie. It held up to my expectations. 🙂
