Joe Alwyn ‘wouldn’t say’ if he was or was not engaged to Taylor Swift

Joe Alwyn is currently promoting Conversations with Friends, a miniseries based on the book of the same name. Alwyn is, to me, rather unknowable. Even though he’s been dating one of the most famous women in the world for nearly six years, we really don’t know much about him, and that’s by his design. He’s extremely private, he doesn’t talk about Taylor or their life together, and he just keeps his head down and works. It’s actually pretty admirable. I go back and forth on whether I think Joe is actually boring, or whether he consciously cultivates a blank image of himself as a “celebrity.” In any case, he spoke to WSJ. Magazine about his latest project, and WSJ. Mag asked him about those persistent engagement rumors. His answer was… interesting, I suppose.

Joe Alwyn is continuing to keep his relationship cards close to his chest. In a new interview for WSJ. Magazine’s May issue, on newsstands April 30, the Conversations with Friends star, who has been dating Taylor Swift since 2016, was asked about engagement rumors that have been swirling.

“If I had a pound for every time I think I’ve been told I’ve been engaged, then I’d have a lot of pound coins,” quipped the English actor, 31.

“I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say,” he added of whether he was set to walk down the aisle with Swift, 32.

Of his decision to be private about his personal life, Alwyn told the magazine, “We live in a culture that people expect so much to be given. So that if you’re not posting all the time about what you’re doing, how you’re spending a day or how you made a breakfast, does that make you a recluse?” he mused of social media.

The Harriet actor admitted to WSJ. that while he’d “like to feel slightly less guarded sometimes in interviews or in whatever kind of interactions,” his attitude is “just a knee-jerk response to the culture we live in. If you give it to them, it just opens the door.”

I understand when celebrities speak as if “once you talk about your personal life one time, the floodgates are open.” I get that, I really do. But I also think… you know, you could just set boundaries? Even in the entertainment press, if Joe was like “I adore Taylor and that’s all you’re getting,” people would back off from there. But again, I understand that Joe doesn’t even want to play that game and that is his boundary. I also wonder what he’ll do if Taylor starts revealing more about their life together, or what he’ll do if she, say, wants to drop some wedding photos.

He is one of those guys who needs a beard bc he looks 12 forever. Not necessarily a bad thing as I run for anti-aging cream.

Maybe he shops at Forever 12
      😂

I’m not sure his take on privacy jives with the fact his girlfriend has made a career out of sharing other peoples private moments with the world. I find it two faced that he deems his privacy so important yet helps write songs with Taylor that share other peoples most private moments.

He only really started to grow a beard since 2019. I actually suspect he wears it because of a certain movie star that he feels threatened subconsciously. I said this because of that star’s adversarial connection to his girlfriend Taylor Swift, and I saw a picture of him on Instagram several months ago and he was significantly buffed, same as that movie star who also is known for wearing a very nice beard for a decade now.

I disagree that he could just set boundaries. Media tend to work off of precedent. If you open up a topic then every other media person feels entitled to go there. They will respond to push back from the celebrity’s publicist that the celebrity opened up the topic and that is now fair game.

Frankly, I like this attitude. I really don’t want to know every brain fart some barely educated celeb has.

Think about how many actors/celebs that show their asses on SM. Although….the more we know about a lot of them, the less appealing they are, and the less we’re will spend our hard earned money on seeing, so I guess they’re saving us some nice cash! lol

I think he wanted to try the character actor career root. If that is the case, maintaining maximum privacy is almost a job requirement.

He looks like Chad Michael Murray

    I think he is right.

Sadly, the most interesting thing about him is the relationship with Taylor. I liked him in The Favourite – there was a bit of a spark there, but he is sort of forgettable in other parts. LaineyGossip thinks this new show could do it for him, but it seems rather niche. Obviously the relationship with Tay has led to more opportunities like with Tom Ford, but I do wonder if his career would’ve been different in the sliding doors scenario where he never meets her. He’d probably be good on a Julian Fellowes show – he reads very British to me.

I know a guy who is an actor of some slight repute. He has a stage name and in his “real life”, he uses his real name, and has an entire life that has nothing to do with his acting. It works for him and his family.

  8. Melody says:

Call me crazy, but what if Alwyn is actually Taylor doing a Garth Brooks/Chris Gains alter ego thing?

    • olliesmom says:

He does kind of resemble Taylor when she was made up as a man for “The Man” video.

I totally subscribe to the conspiracy theory that they are already married.
