A man jumped on stage during Dave Chappelle’s Hollywood Bowl gig

I’ll admit it, stand-up comedians did have a point when they said that Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars would lead to people coming on stage and attacking them. Look what happened now. Dave Chappelle was performing on stage at the Hollywood Bowl in LA when a man ran on stage and tried to tackle or attack Chappelle. Security guys took the guy to the “back” of the Bowl and it looks like they beat the snot out of him.

U.S. stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked by an audience member during a live performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A male suspect on Tuesday evening jumped on stage and onto Chappelle as he was about to exit the stage, police said. Security officers intervened at that time to detain the suspect.

The man, whose identification is currently being withheld, suffered “superficial injuries” while being detained. He has been taken to hospital for injuries and to be evaluated. The LAPD said the man was armed with a replica gun that ejects a knife blade when discharged.

Chappelle was not thought to have been injured in the attack.

I’m including a video below from someone who was there, where Dave comes back to the mic after the guy had been hauled off, and he did handle this well. I suspect many comedians have thought about what they would do (now) if someone jumped on stage with them. This guy will probably be charged with having a weapon too – a replica gun which ejects a knife? Jesus. I wonder if he had that “out” when he jumped on stage. Anyway, regardless of my personal feelings about Dave (he’s a transphobic a–hole), I’m glad he’s okay and I’m glad the would-be assailant was taken into custody.

    Better security than the Queen’s.

  2. AC says:

He is what Kaiser called him, a transphobic a–hole. In the times that we live in, I am not surprised this happened. To add another caveat, Chris Rock performed before him, and when it happened, he came out on stage asking if that was Will Smith.

  3. Woke says:

He still won’t understand that making trans people the butt of his jokes embolden people to attack them more so fuck him.

    • JC says:

Hang on, so if someone makes jokes about Asians, or Women, or Black People, they deserve to be attacked? Equality is Equality, best be ready to roll with it when a joke is cracked. No comedian deserves to be attacked for a joke, it is not ok to condone that behavior whatsoever, no matter the joke.

      • Woke says:

Obviously he doesn’t deserve it but if he was able to predict that the Will Smith situation would lead to these kind of things and is unable to see the same for trans people I have no sympathy for him so yeah fuck him.

My sister works as an usher at the theaters in Boston. She says that since the pandemic, people seem to have forgotten how to act. Patrons scream and swear at ushers who are simply giving them directions to seats. She has had to break up fights between patrons DURING theatrical performances; police have had to be called in to carry unruly patrons out of balconies; arguments in the audience have been so loud that the performances on stage have been disrupted; EMTS have to be brought in to almost every show (concerts, plays, AND ballets) to deal with patrons who have collapsed due to drug overdoses or too much alcohol; and people seem to think they have a right to access the performances on stage. She had to pull a middle aged woman, dressed in Versace, off a speaker stack the woman was trying to climb to reach Alice Cooper and ushers and security have to ring the stage during dance performances and shows like Diana Krall. Another usher was punched by a drunken woman simply for asking her to step out of the fire aisle. People are out of control.

This is what we get via republiscums and trumpers that gave permission and encourages hatefulness and violence. If it’s someone we kinda like that strikes out there will be discussions about maybe it’s okay because blah blah blah.

    • MissMarirose says:

Yeah, I think this has more to do with the breakdown of societal norms after the pandemic than it does with Will Smith. I seriously doubt that his slap opened the floodgates and it’s weird to blame him for it.

I agree. I think people in the United States have become so horrible over recent years. I do think Trump accelerated it, saying the most horrible things and getting no consequences for it. It’s like we have tens of millions of Cartmans from South Park running around our country, shouting that they don’t care, they’ll do what they want. On planes, in grocery stores, at the ballet apparently….

People are just out of control with narcissism.

  5. Michael says:

Of all the comedians out there Dave Chapelle is the last one you want to try attacking. Love him or hate him, he has great security and he has extremely loyal fans that will be the crap out of you when the security is done

  6. Barbara says:

    This is scary

  7. Arizona says:

one of his first comments to the audience was “it was a trans man!” supposedly a joke, furthering the idea that trans people are dangerous.

nobody should be attacked on stage but I’m not shedding tears for Chappelle or saying he handled it well. sigh.

  8. olliesmom says:

This happened at the HOLLYWOOD BOWL. I would think that they have better security than that. That’s the part that I find shocking. And how did he get in with this weapon?

    • Tiffany:) says:

It’s so odd that it was a replica/not real gun…that had a knife on it? Where does that even come from, and how did security not catch it?

  9. Ari says:

Trans person here 👋🏻 When I initially saw he had been attacked, I was really concerned for him. Then I saw he joked it was a trans man and as a trans masculine person I’d just like to say for the record that Chappelle is a complete piece of shit. Cool dude, I’ll go back to the world where I have literally been kicked out of the locker room, had rocks thrown at me in the street, almost died giving birth because no one treated me with respect, and lost a job because I asked for a gender neutral bathroom.

    • Tiffany:) says:

My heart goes out to you. That your first thought was for his safety shows what a kind person you are. I’m so sorry for what you have experienced, it is so outrageously wrong.

    • FeministYeah says:

So sorry you went through this. As a CSA survivor, I’ve hated him since he said how old is 15really?(regarding the R. Kelly victims in his show back then); Men won’t be gentleman until they meet a lady; and just any other sad and tired ass extremely sexist joke.
Now that he thinks he’s edgy and with the times for bashing trans people, I can only say welcome to the club of people further degraded by his fucking idiotic jokes.
Very sorry you had to join us. If it’s any consolation, I (and MANY others) are with you, in absolutely unequivocal ways 🥰

      • carter says:

really, that was the joke that did it for you.
in the black community 15 is a grown woman who’s attacker can say it was consensual sex. 15 is a grown man who the cops think is a bad dude they feared for their lives even though the boy is unarmed. but 15 is innocent in other communities or races where you will buy your 15-year-old a gun and be surprised that he does something egregious with it when pick on. shit 25 years olds are still being called kids in other communities. “we don’t want to ruin their lives, he is only a kid (25) let’s just give him probation”. Dave Chappelle made a few jokes about the trans community but their reaction was so visceral I’m almost sure he chose that group to try to make a point on how we are still overlooking how blacks are treated.
so the point that Dave was making…how old is 15 really?
        It depends on who’s asking.

      I see you, family. <3

  10. LadySwampwitch says:

I knew this would happen and this is why what happened at the Oscars was so crazy. This is just the beginning. Americans are violent people and they feel that they have been given permission by one of the worlds biggest movie stars to slap/punch a comic. Gross

  11. Sour Pasoa says:

@Carter: its all about who gets the ‘protection’ because of their complexion. (I WILL ALWAYS LOVE PAUL MOONEY). Great observation!

I lovedddd how Dave went to look at his attacker, and you could clearly hear him say: ‘stomp him’. I enjoyed Chris Rock getting up there asking if it was Will 🤣😂

The way Dave just kept the show going, entertaining the attendees.
There is no other comedy 🐐🐐🐐🐐 at the moment.
