Kylie Jenner on her Met gown: ‘I don’t care what people think. It’s very special’

Kylie Jenner attended the Met Gala in a fluffy, ruffled wedding dress with a backwards snapback cap and white veil from the late Virgil Abloh’s Off-White label. I actually liked her look. Was it on theme? Not necessarily. Was it different from Kylie’s usual looks? Definitely, since she usually goes for the sexy body-con stuff. I think the snapback was probably the most polarizing part of her look and Kar-Jenner fashion tends to get criticized no matter what.

Kylie shared a video on her YouTube that was filmed in the days before the Met Gala and basically preempts any criticism by explaining why she chose the gown and making clear she doesn’t care what people think of it. She was supposed to attend the 2020 Met with Virgil and then couldn’t attend the 2021 Gala in September because Stormi got sick. Then Virgil tragically died of cancer at age 41 in November. Wearing a gown from his label was Kylie’s way of honoring his memory.

Kylie Jenner’s 2022 Met Gala look was one of the night’s most-discussed red carpet moments.

Kylie donned an Off-White wedding dress and snapback cap with flowers and a veil on it, the whole shebang by late fashion designer Virgil Abloh.

In a new video posted to her YouTube channel, Kylie shared some BTS footage of getting ready for the big event, and she explained how she almost didn’t attend it at all.

“To be honest, I decided really last minute I wasn’t gonna go,” Kylie explained, before revealing that the reason she changed her mind was to properly honor Virgil.

“I was like ‘Unless I can go and honor Virgil [Abloh]‘ and [his wife] Shannon would want me to go and I would wear Off-White, then that’s the only reason I would go today. To honor him.”

Kylie explained that the reasoning behind her look was to “do something big.” ” Every year I’ve worn some type of tight mermaid dress, so this year I wanted to just wear something big, do something different,” she said.

“I feel like I was supposed to go with Off-White because Virgil and I talked about this for the last two years,” she also said. “I was supposed to go with him in 2020, so it feels right that my Met come back I’m going with Off-White for sure.”

Kylie also explained that the look mattered so much to her personally that she didn’t care what people would think of it.

“It also puts off the pressure of what people think about my look because I love it so much. It’s so much more special to me that I don’t care what people think. It’s very special.”

I thought this was sweet and makes perfect sense. Virgil and the Kar/Jenner/Wests go way back. He met Kanye back in 2009 when Kanye was doing his intern thing in Paris. Kylie clearly had a good relationship with Virgil, as evidenced by the nice note from his widow, and wanted to honor his memory and their 2020 plans. It was interesting to see the different looks they tried out, but I get why Kylie chose the dress she did. She wanted to go big and it was a deviation from her previous Met looks and her style in general. I know there were a lot of mixed feelings about the hat, but I thought it was cute and interesting. Even if it wasn’t on theme (and so many looks weren’t), it put a unique stamp on the look.

Aside from the Met prep, I thought there were a few interesting things in the video. Kylie’s jet is impressive. Kourtney is the only one of the sisters who doesn’t appear, though I think we can all guess what she was doing. Kim really did dye her hair. Khloe ate ice cream that looks like it was from a Mr. Softee truck. Stormi and her brother were the only Kar-Jenner kids to travel to New York. They showed the baby’s feet in his little car seat — when are they going to share his name and show a full pic? Also, Kylie’s Instagram was on point. I chuckled at the engraving on the clutch in her afterparty pics and she had a Bridgerton reference in another caption (stars are just like us). In the video, she even plans out her “Married to the Met” caption. Speaking of marriage, is this a ploy from Kris Jenner to generate some buzz about Kylie and Travis? Kylie posted some white-clad beach pics with him that the tabloids think are “sparking engagement rumors” after her Met look. They’ve been together for awhile without an engagement, but he is desperately in need of some good press, so who knows.

I liked her Met look. I didn’t understand it at first but now that I do I appreciate it more. But mostly I liked that she was having fun with it and not just finding new ways to meet the baseline of street legal body coverage.

As long as I don’t see her cleavage or ass, it’s a win. Very low bar.

I also quite liked this look. I probably don’t fully “get” what the designer may have been intending, but she looks cute and stands out and refers to the theme of the gala with a very Gilded Age silhouette from the waist down, mixed with a T-shirt and cap style on top from modern times. The veil is also very Gilded Age (veils weren’t just for weddings then). I also love that she did a tribute to Virgil Abloh. I actually like this mix and originality a lot more than someone who just dressed in a total costume from the past like SJP but added cleavage. It’s not necessarily the “assignment” to dress in costume, Sarah Jessica.

I am a sucker for blocks of bright color, whether white as here, or the neon pinks we saw a lot of (Sebastian Stan, Glenn Close, etc.) and the neon yellow Gwen Stefani did. I just love highly saturated colors on a red carpet.

I also thought Kendall looked great btw.

Now her after party dress seems more on theme and it was also Off White but it seems she just wanted something grand.

  3. Southern Fried says:

The bottom is glued-on wads of toilet paper.

  4. minx says:

    Of course she cares.

    • FancyPants says:

Right?? She ONLY cares what everybody thinks! I don’t know how to describe this really but in that video, she almost seems like she’s bored with herself (like when she’s talking to the mirror). I lol’d when I saw Khloe eating that drippy chocolate ice cream cone so close to all that white dress material.

    • Christine says:

I came to post the same thing. This entire family is VAPID.

“You guys didn’t like my look because you’re too stupid to understand LOL. I didn’t even want to go anyways!!!”

  5. Pinkosaurus says:

They are all plastic and likely terrible with their horrible momager, but every once in a while I get an inkling there might be hope that Kylie grows into an interesting person as she ages. I’m pretty sure Kris will make sure there is no legal wedding with Travis until after all his legal liability is settled. No way is she putting her family money at risk.

  6. Meh says:

She doesn’t care so much she made a video lol. Nice play, try to do a guilt trip on us but her get up is still hysterically funny.

  7. mellie says:

I think I might have liked it a bit better if she had left off the baseball cap w/ the netting. When I look at that get-up my eyes just go straight to that cap/netting and her distorted face (sorry, but her face is distorted, like a Bratz doll, I believe it’s been said).

  8. Swack says:

She looks like a lite kid playing dress up in her mother’s clothes.

    • atorontogal says:

Usually though, when kids play dress-up their eyes are not dead.

      • Tiffany:) says:

She always looks so vacant and dead eyed. It ruins any looks she tries, because there’s no life or vibrancy there. Honestly, I think her Met look might have worked if she didn’t look so blank. It would have a totally different vibe if it was on someone who had a spark.

  9. MarineTheMachine says:

I have to admit this sporty bridal look was one of my favorites. As an old millennial who was a tomboy into basketball, it immediately spoke to my teenage self. It is a nice silhouette change on her too, she looks strong and confident. I feel like her energy is lifted in that look. Now that I know the story behind it, it makes sense 🤍

  10. Betina says:

I like her and she’s clearly a great mom. I like their family relationship. If I had that many kids I’d want them to be close like the kardashian Jenners appear to be. Cute video.

    • Kukuviza says:

Comments like these always makes me wonder… how can we possibly say about a celebrity we don’t know personally that they are good parents?

  11. Bre says:

Their excess doesn’t really bother as much as their carbon footprint. This family is so wasteful. The rich destroy our planet while the media guilts us average people for not recycling or buying plastic items.

  12. Hell Nah! says:

I thought Kylie’s dress was a great choice – she looked grand and super confident. It was a touching way to honor her friend. I won’t comment on her face but yes, she does care what people think. Very much. Stormi is too cute!

Sorry but the video was, for me, unwatchable. I couldn’t help but wonder if any of the dressers and stylists standing around praising their every word were thinking what I was thinking…”how did I get sucked into this hellscape of vacuousness??”

  13. Saba says:

Kylie really needs to stop pretending to be a black woman.

  14. luna says:

It was the worst look I’ve ever seen in my life. My eyes!

  15. Maddy says:

Out of all the Kardashian-Jenners, Kylie and Khloé care the most what people think and say
    about them.

Frankly, her dress was out of place, but it was the baseball cap veil and her frozen face that made the look go from “eh” to “NO”. She just looked extremely uncomfortable and unsure of herself on the red carpet.

  16. kelleybelle says:

Poor little dullard. Back away from the lip fillers why don’t you? The Kardashians belong nowhere near the Met Gala except maybe Kendall because of her model status.

  17. Case says:

Her after party look would’ve been perfect for the theme.

  18. JFerber says:

Maybe she wore the dress as a hint to Travis just after she had her second child with him?

  19. Ladykatan says:

At least she wore an American designer. It seems like people only got half the memo and only leaned into the “gilded glamour” but not the “American design” concept.

The theme was honestly pretty ill conceived, and I think that’s why there was so much confusion. Even Blake Lively, who was a co-chair of the event, wore Versace (an Italian designer) didn’t understand the assignment…
