Kaia Gerber in a bespoke Celine slipdress in Cannes: poorly designed or cute?

Here are some photos from the giant Cannes Film Festival premiere of Elvis, the Baz Luhrmann movie about (you guessed it) Elvis Presley. Kaia Gerber was there because she’s a model and I would assume she’s contractually required to walk some red carpets. But she had another reason for being there: she’s dating Austin Butler, who stars as Elvis. Kaia wore a bespoke Celine slipdress which was pretty, but Kaia wasn’t comfortable in it. Half of the photos from the carpet have Kaia adjusting the neckline so her boobs don’t fall out. For a bespoke gown, this is absurd. So poorly designed. (Otherwise, she looks lovely.)

Here’s Austin Butler, Priscilla Presley and Olivia DeJonge. I haven’t decided what I think of any of this, but I’m glad Priscilla feels like this is a good representation.

Noomi Rapace in Dries van Noten. Call me tacky, I don’t care, I f–king love this.

Sharon Stone in Dolce & Gabbana. Eh. She looks great, no doubt. But the dress is meh.

Olivia Culpo in a giant Giambatistta Valli. It’s big and dumb and I kind of love it?

Elsa Hosk in Valentino. I’ve seen this hot pink Valentino collection everywhere in recent months. She looks like a Barbie doll!

Deepika Padukone in Louis Vuitton. Hate it!

I am here for Noomi and Sharon. Love the dresses and styling on both.

  2. Persephone says:

Kaiser, the dress by Dries Van Noten is not tacky at all. It looks beautiful!

  3. girl_ninja says:

I don’t like any of the gowns except for Sharon’s and even that is just okay for me. Kaia has seemed to have gained some weight and looks a bit healthier than I have seen her in some time. It is absurd that her gown was not tailored properly.

    • Liz Version 700 says:

Right?!? The gown needed the straps shortened an inch to cover her boobs properly and the way it drapes it looks like she was wearing a fancy pack under the dress?

  4. lucy2 says:

The only one I like is Noomi’s, and I don’t like the gloves.

Kaia Gerber always looks as if she’s trying to play grown up. She emits as much personality as my granddaughters hamster. Just a clothes hanger. She’s successful because of Mommy.

    • Lady Baden-Baden says:

That’s it exactly! I was trying to put my finger on it and you’re right – whatever she wears, she always looks like a kid playing dress up

    • Nyro says:

This. She looks like the end result of a youtube makeup guru doing a 1990s Cindy Crawford tutorial.

    • Nicki says:

Agreed. The great supermodels, like Cindy or Naomi Campbell or Giselle
always project wit and mystery and energy. Kaia is a pretty enough girl who just stands there, waiting to be looked at. An energy vacuum. But the back of the dress is lovely, and the color is great on her. Nice prom picture. Lol

    • BeanieBean says:

Poor Kaia, outdone by the ‘mature’ movie star Sharon Stone; both women wearing long red column dresses, Sharon like a goddess, Kaia like she’s in her mom’s nightie.

  6. J. Ferber says:

Julia K, great writing with your “granddaughter’s hamster.” You have a nice touch with your imagery.

  7. Lady Baden-Baden says:

Not seen great reviews of Elvis, which is a shame.

The Crawford girl is… fine. Unmemorable. Just been looking up Deepika Padukone as that’s the second time I’ve been wowed by a pic of her! Gorgeous woman. And Noomi Rapace does look great – why would that be tacky??

    • BeanieBean says:

Deepika Padukone is so pretty! I hadn’t heard of her before–I don’t stream as much modern stuff as most people, I guess–but my goodness, is she beautiful!

    • Stacey Dresden says:

I like the crazy creepy Vuitton dress too

  8. Lightpurple says:

    Noomi’s emerald earrings are everything

  9. tuille says:

Is Olivia wearing a negligee? The pink Valentino is horrible & looks like Elsa must keep her hands at her waist to hold it up,

    • AngelaH says:

I love it! I would swan around everywhere in Olivia’s dress. It’s like she swanned downstairs in her fancy dressing gown and there was a huge surprise party so she just went with it.

    • Stacey Dresden says:

Olivia’s is like Texas prom via couture. I hate it. It’s totally prissy and absurd at the same time

Well there are some interesting looks here. Noomi’s is singular, and she’s wearing it well, the jewels really finish it. Sharon would look sculptural in a garbage bag, but this has a slightly ’Christmasy’ vibe. I actually quite like the LV, at least it stands out. The rest is…not particularly memorable.

  11. HufflepuffLizLemon says:

I LOVE that LV on Deepika! The structure! The Drama!

    • terra says:

Scrolled through the comments looking for someone who agreed with me on this! I LOVE it to the point of violence. I’d never wear it myself – goodness, no – but that’s because I’m a boring, normal person with no place to wear something that extravagant. If I regularly walked red carpets? I’m there, in a heartbeat.

Gerber’s dress is an ill-fitting, but pretty enough dress. It’s just. . . there existing. That it does so is all I can say about it. Padukone’s gown is FASHION. There is thought, experimentation, history, construction, and art in every inch of it.

Zendaya is probably looking at a photo of it right now and bemoaning someone having gotten to it first – and she’s right to because LV has tended towards more misses than hits as of late, so she can’t count on there being anything that fantastic to come out of the work rooms any time soon. The last great LV I saw was Regina King’s light blue Oscar gown last year, so there could be quite the wait.

    • Normades says:

I love it too. So sculptural and interesting.

  12. JustMe says:

Didn’t the new wife of a Beckham kid wear a similar pink dress to the Met? The Valentino one

  13. Beach Dreams says:

Elsa’s gown is okay (not a fan of how voluminous it is), but she’ll never top her Cinderella-esque look from a few years back at Cannes. *That* was a spectacular showing.

  14. Harleyb says:

OMG! I have a pair of Ralph Lauren cotton twill capris in the same print as Noomi’s dress and routinely pair it with a red tee and red slides.

From now on, I’ll be serving Cannes (in my mind) every time I wear them.

  15. Twinkle says:

Love the Dries Van Noten. The red gloves are a little overkill. Dries is exceptional.

  16. Jennifer says:

For the love of God, the “dress reaches up from the waist to hold the boobs” thing has GOT to stop!

    • BothSidesNow says:

Yes, please make them STOP creating these gowns/pantsuits, they are ugly!! They put the UUGGHHHH in ugly as well!!

  17. Dodo says:

    Bespoke means it should fit.
