Madonna is heading to Malawi this weekend, no baby is safe

I might need to start watching Glee. Everyone loves that show, and it’s getting amazing buzz. Who knew a show about a Glee Club would be so popular? I sure didn’t. Anyway, the big Glee news this week was that next year, Glee will do an all-Madonna episode. Madge has opened up her catalog to the show’s producers, but it is unknown which songs will be used. My guess is at least one heart-wrenching version of “Don’t Tell Me”, which I think is one of Madge’s best. Also, Madge might be looking to return to acting (NO!). The Daily Mail is reporting that Madge is interested in playing Wallis Simpson, the infamous American divorcee who romanced King Edward, and forced his abdication. Oh, Madge cowrote the script too. And she might direct. Guess who is advising her? Guy Ritchie. Seriously.

In other Madge news, she announced yesterday that she’ll be returning to Malawi this weekend. Lock up the babies! No, Madge is going to Malawi to “lay the foundation stone” for the multi-million-dollar girls school she’s building (that she announced in April). This NYDN article doesn’t say, but I’d be willing to bet that the school is being built is affiliated with Kabbalah, which is the only charity (besides The Charitable Upkeep of Boy Toy Jesus Luz) that Madge gives to, according to Cityfile. Madge only gives to Kabbalah, and even then, she only gave less than .05% of her earnings this year. It’s also thought (by me) that this Malawi school is part of the millions of dollars Madge was spreading around (“paying off” if you will) when her adoption of Mercy was initially denied.

Madonna will visit Malawi on Sunday to lay the foundation stone of a multi-million dollar girls’ school she is building, her charity Raising Malawi told Reuters.

The singer, who has adopted two children from the southern African country, is due to arrive on Sunday and attend a brick-laying ceremony in Lilongwe on Monday. The school is expected to cost about $15 million.

“She plans to meet the President Bingu wa Mutharika and together lay a foundation stone for her multi-million dollar girls school,” a staffer at the charity, who declined to be named, said on Thursday.

An AIDS epidemic has left over a million children orphaned in the impoverished country of 13 million.

Malawi’s government came under fire after Madonna adopted a 13-month-old boy, David Banda, in 2006, with critics accusing it of giving her special treatment by skirting laws that ban non-residents from adopting children.

In June this year, Malawi’s Supreme Court overturned a lower court ruling made in April which said Madonna could not adopt a four-year girl — Mercy James — because the singer was not a resident of the country.

[From the NY Daily News]

Yeah, it’s been said before, but Oprah much? I think building a school in an impoverished community is a great thing. I think sticking with development projects in an impoverished community is a great thing. I think focusing on the educational development of young girls is a great thing. But with Madge is always something, isn’t it?

Oprah got a lot of flack for her South African girls school – even before it was opened and had the abuse problems – because Oprah was seen by some as swooping into a country, taking girls away from their families and forcing them into a regimented curriculum that few were prepared for. And let’s face it, Madonna is no Oprah. One thing I’ll give Oprah, she dealt with all of those criticisms and problems head-on, in a way that Madonna couldn’t or wouldn’t if and when problems occur at her school. If this school is affiliated with Kabbalah, as I suspect, then there are many large, looming disasters waiting to happen.

If it was anyone else, I would give some lip service to the celebrity at least trying to make a difference. But with Madge is just seems like yet another big stunt to get attention, doesn’t it? Or am I being too harsh? I’m open to the criticism that I’m being too harsh. It’s just that, to me, everything about Madge’s involvement in Malawi seems “off”.

Can’t fault her for building a school, but I can for wanting to play Wallis Simpson. Though I would greenlight her playing an elderly Jessica Simpson.

  2. Sumodo says:

Wallis Simpson was a)American in Britain b)Put on airs c)Caused a scandal…thumbs up for Madonna, because she won’t have to “act.”

  3. waldemar says:

had to laught at the headline, haha

I dont believe she will act in the Wallis Simpson movie. She has said before that she doesn’t want to do that anymore (too much critic, i wonder why). Directing yes, that story goes around for a while now.

I don’t think she does Malawi for the press and attention. I mean there are easier ways for her to get attention. She wants to help, in her own weird and controlling way, I guess.

  4. Bete says:

Forget Louis Vuitton…the best accessory for Madonna is a live child.

  5. Katyusha says:

I can’t believe that guy is writing an “Adopt Me” sign on that girl like she’s a puppy.

See, this is where having an education and/or being original comes in. Forget the school for girls, Oprah has already hit that. If La Madgesty was smart she would start a cottage industry for the adults and children to make a difference promptly. Teach a craft skill in a textile or some other material that is attainable for this region and have people do piece work in their homes and then market the hand made signature items to the world market. Madonna is a marketing genius with the ideas of others she makes her own but she is no innovator. Her lack of education and originality and talent is so apparent to a knowing eye. She needs to stop ripping off Oprah and Angelina Jolie. Pfft! Madge, call me. *puts hands up to ear*

  7. Jeri says:

She’s gotta prove them right to have given her the last baby after ALMOST DENYING THE GREAT WHITE ONE. So there.

Sumodo, Madonna played a spoiled rich woman (in Crapt Away), and she was horrible. She has no screen presence. And, she is incapable of projecting anything on the screen except ego, desperation, and failed attempts to appear “natural.” I think she should stay off the screen for the sake of all . . . any project with Madonna in it is a waste of money.

You really have to wonder about the serious discrepancy in media coverage of Madonna and Angelina re: foreign adoptions. Why does Angelina get to be the saint when it is the exact same thing? BOTH of them should be given the side-eye over their human neocolonialism. SCARY PEOPLE.

  10. hello! says:

“Human neocolonialism”??!! So, you are comparing the adoption of a few kids TO the forced/armed/violent/systematic takeover of an entire country for the purposes of exploitation/money of another country!? Do you work for Fox news or something? Get thee an education and right quick.

What pisses me off about this is that Madonna makes her money mainly from the United States, yet does absolutely ZERO charity work for Americans in need. We have American children that need homes, we have homeless people, people in poverty, etc., but this b*tch goes halfway around the world to take care of African children when there are problems right in her own backyard.

I guess it’s just not trendy enough to adopt a kid from DC or Columbus Ohio, she’s gotta get one from Malawi, because she’s gotta keep up with St. Angie, who is collecting one from each continent. And besides, these celebs hate Americans, they think we’re all ignorant hatemongers who can barely read…but they LOVE to take our money!

I used to really like Madonna’s music, but now I refuse to support her in any way, because she is so contemptuous of America and Americans. I am sick to death of these people making their money off of us, yet all the while they are insulting us, telling us we need to do this or that to fix America, yet never giving ONE DAMN DIME to help fix the problems they are whining about! Hypocrites, all of them.

He’s probably got too many daughters and wants Madonna to take one off his hands.

  13. Tazina says:

I highly doubt Madonna wants to adopt any more children. She saw how David needed a sibling and with the advice of her friends, adopted Mercy.

  14. kim says:

Yeah Brad and Angie hate America that’s why they took $5 million from the Jolie Pitt foundation to build houses in New Orleans. Well, then again Hurricane Katrina victims were referred to as refugees so maybe NOLA isn’t considered America.

  15. Emily says:

thepoop: I think the main difference in their adoptions is that Angelina goes for orphans (as in, kids with no parents), while Madonna goes for kids who are still living with their parents. I know that David and Mercy will be materially better of with the Vadge, but the way she does it (remember David’s dad fighting to keep him?) seems really icky to me.

  16. NicoleAM says:

I don’t care if Madge wants to adopt children from Africa or wherever, but why doesn’t she adopt orphans? Both those kids had living parents. I think that’s kinda effed up.
I also agree, so many celebs want to raise awareness about other countries when there are so many probs in this one.
How can you set an example for the rest of world if you’re neglecting your own citizens?
