Robert Downey Jr. paid for Armie Hammer’s rehab & RDJ is still supporting Armie

About a year and a half ago, we were being consumed by awful, unwanted Armie Hammer gossip. Gossip about his alleged cannibalism, reports of his mistreatment of women, stories about his compulsive cheating. By June of last year, Hammer’s agent, manager and publicist had all dropped him, which just shows you how bad it had gotten for him and how Armie was seen, in Hollywood, as radioactive. Soon after, he was credibly accused of rape (a situation which is still pending legally) and he checked into an intensive rehab. When he got out of rehab, he stayed in the Cayman Islands, where his father has a place and where he grew up. Last week, Armie was seen by a Desus & Mero producer Muna Mire, who posted that Hammer was working as a “personal concierge” to incoming guests at a local hotel. Some claimed he had a job selling timeshares too? I didn’t really follow it. But Vanity Fair had an update:

When Armie Hammer found himself at the center of a dark crisis last year involving shocking allegations of emotional abuse, manipulation, and violence, it was Robert Downey Jr. who stepped in to steer the actor toward rehab, a source close to Hammer tells Vanity Fair.

In fact, Downey, who has battled his own highly publicized Hollywood scandals and addictions, paid for the actor to spend nearly six months in the Florida rehabilitation facility the Guest House, the source confirms. The treatment center, situated on a secluded 52-acre estate in Silver Springs, “cater[s] in particular to clients who have high-stress or high-visibility lifestyles such as business executives, politicians and entertainment professionals,” according to the facility’s website.

Since completing his stay in rehab last December, Hammer had been enjoying a low profile in the Caymans, working on his recovery, and spending time with his family, says the source. The actor’s estranged wife Elizabeth Chambers, the founder of Bird Bakery who has reportedly signed her own entertainment deal, has supported Hammer throughout the process, telling friends she wants what’s best for their family.

Last week, Hammer’s discreet recovery in the Caymans was interrupted suddenly when a viral tweet returned the actor to headlines. Desus & Mero producer Muna Mire posted a photo of a pamphlet for the family-owned vacation club Morritt’s Resort that featured a snapshot of Hammer and identified him as a “personal concierge” to incoming guests. Since the surprising social media claim, both TMZ and Variety have reported that the actor is working as a timeshare salesman.

An attorney for Hammer told V.F. Wednesday, “I can’t confirm or deny the report because Armie hasn’t addressed it. I just think it’s shitty that, if he is selling timeshares, the media is shaming him for having a ‘normal job.’”

Hammer was so besieged by press in the Caymans that, on Friday, he flew with Chambers and their two young children to Los Angeles to escape the scrutiny. While in town, Hammer has been staying at a home owned by Downey and has attended an A.A. meeting in Malibu, according to the source.

In addition to providing Hammer a temporary place to stay, Downey has been providing Hammer financial assistance until he gets back on his feet, according to the same person. (Representatives for Downey have not yet responded to Vanity Fair’s request for comment.)

[From Vanity Fair]

RDJ is one of those in-recovery types who tries to pay it forward when it comes to other actors needing to go into a program or work through their recovery. Charlie Sheen probably contacted Armie Hammer too, I’m not even joking. Bradley Cooper might have spoken to him as well. While I respect the fact that RDJ wants to help actor-addicts, I actually thought it was a good thing that Hammer was seen as a pariah in Hollywood. Some people don’t deserve comebacks, especially men who hurt a lot of women while they were in the throes of addiction. Now, that being said, I don’t think Hammer should be “shamed” for working a real job or whatever. The man has had money problems for years, and he’s not actually “the heir” to some vast fortune. His father has apparently cut off Armie completely too.

I don’t even know what to say here. So happy dudes take care of dudes? Shall we call this White Men Can’t Fail?
    Just ugh.

  2. girl_ninja says:

White dudes almost always have one another’s back. Supporting a possible rapist and deviant? Okay…

  3. Likeyoucare says:

RDJ had even worse experience with addiction during his younger day.
This is him want to help others. But if he helped him to get into movie bussiness again then i will lose my respect at RDJ.

    • Marie Janson says:

Why? Is movie business somehow for the pure and innocent? RDJ had his share of mistreating women and other gross things. He is supporting his kind.

  4. Beach Dreams says:

Trash white man supports another trash white man. RDJ is awful so this doesn’t surprise me at all.

    • Nana says:

What does race have to do with this?

      • Beach Dreams says:

Why are you upset about them being referred to as white? They are indeed white men, after all.

      • Nana says:

Would you refer to POC that way? This is not a race issue so why say that?

      • Beach Dreams says:

It really bothers you, doesn’t it? Interesting.

      • Marie Janson says:

I think BD’s point is that white men in powerful places want to remain there, so they aid each other to maintain their position and domain. They usually dont support a brother that has fallen.

I can’t really understand money problems of Armie. He had to drop out of like three upcoming films but he’s done some big movies and works consistently. Maybe like a lot of people he spent all the money as soon as he made it. But these people should have money managers. I got the impression he likes to be one of the people. He talked about working construction the beginning of the pandemic before all the stories came out about his cheating etc.

    • Mia4s says:

So a combination of what I’ve read and some heavy speculation: he said in many interviews early on that his parents cut him off when he headed off to become an actor. If we take this into account and then look at the house he and his wife owned and the way they lived (at least on Instagram)? I’m not a bit surprised he had little to no savings for a crisis. They lived RICH. And while I’m sure the being “cut off” was an exaggeration, I really don’t think they were careful. Add in a likely drug problem, and that money went fast. While the movies he did probably netted him low millions $$$ at least, none led to sequels (or further seasons of TV shows as another example) where the really big money is made. It does make weird sense.

I read an interview with a business manager once about newer Hollywood actors and there was no mystery to it: the ones who are smart do treat themselves when the first big cheques come in (a great car or motorcycle, pay off debts), but are careful for the most part. The ones that think the train will never stop or who have addictions? Well…they end up as stories on Celebitchy! 😉

      • lucy2 says:

Especially one that grew up super rich and then had a lucrative career. He probably never thought he’d be broke. And I’m not sure I believe the story about them cutting him off.
Didn’t his wife have a business in Texas or something too? Did that close as well?

      • Lens says:

She has a couple of cupcake shops called bird bakery but a couple of bakeries won’t keep these two in the style they’ve been accustomed. Any retail type shops couldn’t unless there were a lot of them and there’s just two shops that I know of.

  6. SarahCS says:

Nope, I can’t with this. Yes to paying it forward and helping recovering addicts (and not shaming people for having regular jobs) but there is a LOT more to this situation and it would be nice if once in a while actions had consequences for well connected white men.

  7. Nicole says:

RDJ is also the guy who came out of his whole struggles as a dedicated Republican so…eh.

  8. AmyB says:

I respect RDJ for trying to help other addicts. That is part of the AA process. BUT, this situation with Hammer is far more nuanced than simply that. This involved emotional manipulation, gaslighting, and nonconsensual BDSM dynamics resulting in rape and sexual violence, and God knows what else. There are things in this life that should have dire consequences. The things Armie Hammer allegedly did, IMO, is one such example.

  9. lunchcoma says:

I think it’s good RDJ helps fellow actors in need of assistance dealing with substance abuse, but I’m kind of confused why Hammer is on the list. Shouldn’t his family be willing to pay for his rehab even if they generally don’t want to be seen as encouraging his behavior?

As for selling timeshares, I don’t think actors should be shamed for having real jobs, but I think I might avoid that resort, especially if I were traveling with young women relatives.

    • Concern+Fae says:

His family are abusive garbage monsters and have been for generations. I’ve been reading about them since the 80s. Vanity Fair has written about them all along.

This is the sort of situation where my grandmother used to say that you won’t know if it was the right or wrong thing to do for another five years.

I don’t begrudge the pay it forward rehab, but we do need to find a way to get help to victims, and some way forward for former abusers.

  10. Constant says:

This guy has greater issues than addictions. For example, I doubt his predilection for sadism and his contempt for women can be cured so readily if ever. RDJ is wearing blinders.

    • WhiteCloud says:

Yes, there’s a huge difference between RDJ’s addiction issues and AH’s problems re misogyny and sadism and cannibalism, at the PR level re film career etc and just in general.

Think actors generally feel super vulnerable in the public gaze and they sympathise even with supposed rapists and alleged monsters like Armie Hammer. e.g., Josh Duhmel (whatever his surname is; Fergie’s ex) got the role AH was fired from after the fallout and he said something like he regretted getting a role in this way. Same re Mads Mikklsen and Johnny Depps’ role in Fantastic Beasts.

Nothing wrong with making an honest living as a timeshare salesperson or whatever. It’s probably more stable income than acting and he has kids to support. Elizabeth Chambers is pretty wealthy though and has a successful business (bakery cafes).

  11. KS says:

I know people like RDJ but let’s not forget he did the exact same thing for Mel Gibson.

    • Jack says:

Mel Gibson is the one who helped RDJ get back into Hollywood after his jail stint and rehab. Mel helped him first and he helped him back.

  12. Ashren says:

Some of you guys are just plain mean. Jacking off onto the previously advantaged doesn’t make you righteous. Show a bit of humanity for people going through shit; one day it may just be you needing the same compassion.

    • Jaded says:

Armie Hammer is vile. His family is vile. He has been a sexual predator and abuser for years. He managed to avoid a prison sentence and has the support of RDJ but that doesn’t excuse his horrific behaviour. I doubt rehab did much good other than to get him off of booze and drugs, he needs intensive psychiatric therapy to control his demons. I hope he never gets another acting role for the rest of his life.

  13. Truthiness says:

Armie could work in soup kitchens for 20 years and I still don’t want to see a movie with him in it. It wasn’t one rape accusation, it was many. Sadistic and scarring. Plus the fact that he’s not a good actor! I think his family cutting him off has more history than we know. He disregards boundaries and I bet the family has seen more than we have.

    • WhiteCloud says:

Agree with you except on the family thing. Google the family. The father and grampa apparently raped the aunt. Dad is a sexual deviant, apparently. The mother is a religious fanatic. They apparently laundered money (rumour). He fit right into the family. Think he was cut off due to his attempts at trying acting as a career and not for his desire to live like those in the Marquis de Sade’s works of fiction.

  14. jferber says:

Yuk. You mean the mega-wealthy Hammer can’t afford his own rehab? What bollocks!

  15. littlegossipgirl says:

I’m not shaming him for having a real job. I suspect he will be back working in Hollywood in the next couple of years. These headlines are to test the waters. It goes to show how being young and good looking impacts peoples perception of you. Almost like some people don’t want to believe he could have done all those abusive things.
