Cate Blanchett in Schiaparelli at the ‘Tar’ Venice Film Festival premiere: gorgeous?

Here are some photos from Thursday’s premiere and photocall at the Venice Film Festival. Last night was the big premiere of Tar, where Cate Blanchett plays some kind of problematic orchestra conductor, I think? Whatever, it’s Cate, I’m sure she’s great in it and I’m sure she’ll be nominated for everything during the awards season. I hope she brings it, fashion-wise, for months. If Venice is a preview of her awards campaign, then we’re in for something very special. Cate wore this Schiaparelli Haute Couture corseted jumpsuit to the premiere. Stunning. It looks like she has a flower garden growing out of her chest. I love the fit of the jumpsuit too – the wide velvet legs, almost bellbottom-esque.

Cate Blanchett wore Roksanda to the photocall – once again, the top of the outfit holds all of the drama, all of the coolness. This time, the pants f–king suck though. It’s like some kind of high-fashion pegged hem? Ugh.

Tessa Thompson wore Elie Saab. She’s such a fashionista, she’s always taking risks with such strong looks. I love this completely.

Jodie Turner-Smith wore Christopher John Rogers. Much more subdued than her Gucci looks from the previous day. I like this but I don’t love it.

Julianne Moore in Armani Privé. Simple, classic, elegant, gorgeous. With that face, that hair and that skin, you can keep it so simple. The diamonds are Cartier. Stunning.

I’d remove that one flower sticking up in the middle. Other than that I love it

omg I LOVE that jumpsuit. Cate is one that I always love to see on the red carpet, even when I don’t end up loving a look. I just feel like she takes risks but also knows what works for her so her looks are never boring and usually hit the mark (like this one.)

also love Julianne’s black velvet dress with the diamonds. Classic and elegant and gorgeous.

I really like that dress on JTS. It reminds me of a painting.

Same. I love that CBs pantlegs look like they’ve got cufflinks.

And I adore JTS’s dress and jeweled collar and hair. It all looks amazing on her. I love that her purse is periwinkle and matches her dress (even though my first thought was “Ugh, prom clutch.”

I love the cuffed pant legs too. That outfit is so much and yet on Cate it all works.

JTS is so so gorgeous. The dress is, too.

Julianna Moore looks elegant and lovely but the top of her dress looks uncomfortable. It’s got to be so stiff to stay up like that.

I like the top half of Tessa Thompson’s look.

The color of Jodie’s dress looks a painting that you hang on a wall

Yes. I love the colors and she glows in it.

    • LaraK says:

I love the dress, but I hate that red carpet lighting is totally calibrated for white women. JTS is so stunning but needs proper lighting so she doesn’t disappear into the background.

Maybe it’s because I’m on the hunt for one, but it reminds me of the fall wreath I need for my front door. BUT I do like this on her.

I think we will get a looooooong red carpet season of fabulous fashion. Tar is getting rapturous reviews and given that Todd Field(the director) has only directed two previous movies and they were both BRILLIANT(In the Bedroom, Little Children), I think this movie is going to slap and Cate will probably be brilliant in it.

Looking forward to all her fashion this awards season.

I love ALL of these looks. These ladies are stunning. Tessa is jaw dropping. I saw her in motion on my TL last nite and she was serving!

Both Cate and Julianne are wearing black velvet. Could this fabric be “IN” going into autumn? I hope so. I always found velvet to be so luxurious and wished more designers used it in their collections.

    • Julia K says:

Jodie Turner Smith’s sheath dress is stunning. Love the way the hemline flares out to show off the colors.

It looks like she is wearing a painting. It’s so beautiful. I wasn’t feeling that black Gucci she wore two nights ago. But this Christopher John Rogers, chef kiss! I guess I just love Jodie in color.

  7. Meija says:

Yikes is it only me? Hate the flowers love Jodi’s dress and hate the bodice on Julianna
So fashion may not be my thang..🙂

    • kirk says:

No it’s not only you; agree on all. Julianne Moore bodice looks like a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen; maybe it’s glued on. That’s what J-Lo said about her iconic green Versace dress, that thing wasn’t going to come loose.

  8. Owlsyn (is An Old) says:

Cate Blanchett’s 1999 Oscar gown (the one with the butterflies on it) lives rent free in my head to this day. I can’t see anything about her and fashion without thinking of it.

  9. North of Boston says:

I’m not loving JM’s latest looks. While that structured black velvet dress is fine, it just doesn’t suit her … whether it’s the dark color, the structure, the tailoring, it’s overpowering her, swamping her.
There’s drama, and then there’s “the DRESS is wearing you” This dress is wearing her.

I’d tweak it with a change to a color more complementary to her coloring, a slight hoik and a reduction of fabric volume, including scaling back the height of the boob shafts.

  10. Watson says:

    Love all of them.

  11. MsIam says:

JTS dress is gorgeous, wow! I like but don’t love the rest except for JM. Hate that stiff breast plate look, its unflattering.

  12. elizabeth says:

what is happening behind tessa? is that a person crouching behind her?

    • North of Boston says:

That’s her train wrangler- flouncing out the back of her dress so its full glory can show in the pictures

  13. BeanieBean says:

Ow, was my first thought. The sharp different between Cate’s waist & hip looks painful & unnatural. What price beauty, eh?

  14. Gm says:

I really like all the looks here. Beautiful, stunning, they carry themselves and the clothing well.

  15. someChick says:

Cate’s outfit is gorgeous, but the jumpsuit dilemma still stands: how do you use the ladies room wearing it?? 🙂

  16. lucy2 says:

I like all of these. Cate’s floral dress is stunning, I almost gasped when I saw it.

I actually love Jodie’s too, it’s just kind of magical. It looks like swirling colors.

  17. SarahCS says:

I like the idea of JMs dress but can we please start building in some support for the ladies in these open fronted dresses? Do designers just hate boobs?
