Sheryl Lee Ralph brought down the house at the 2022 Emmys

The 2022 Emmys were surprisingly good. I was impressed with host Kenan Thompson and found that he struck just the right tone, which I did not expect. The announcer, Sam Jay, was excellent and kept it moving. The intro montage, featuring a bunch of iconic television show theme songs remixed with choreography, was just impressive and incredible. Overall it was highly entertaining, but honestly I crashed around 9:45 EST because that’s still an hour past my bedtime. These awards shows need to keep it under two hours but you know that’s never going to happen.

The most moving moment was Sheryl Lee Ralph winning Supporting Actress in a comedy series and breaking into song. She sung “Endangered Species” by Dianne Reeves. I got goosebumps and I cried. She absolutely brought down the house. In her speech she said “Don’t you ever, ever give up on you, because if you get a Quinta Brunson in your corner, if you get a husband like mine in your corner, if you get children like mine in your corner, and if you’ve got friends like everybody who voted for me, cheered for me, loved me—thank you!” Sheryl got a standing ovation before she even got up there and she definitely earned the next one.

Sheryl told red carpet host Laverne Cox that she chose her dress, by designer Brandon Blackwood, because Black is beautiful and “anything but basic.” Also, Sheryl is 65! I thought she was 55 tops, and only because she’s been in the business so long. She’s just the second Black woman to win Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy series since Jacké Harry won for 227 way back in 1987.

Quinta Brunson was absolutely resplendent in bronze Dolce & Gabbana. I love how the skirt flows like liquid metal from the sequin bodice. It fits her perfectly and she looked amazing. The mesh gloves are a cool touch.

Quinta won Writing for a Comedy Series and she was nominated for her Lead Actress in a comedy too. Abbott Elementary is a smash hit because of her writing and stewardship and this was so deserved. They’re filming the second season now, I can’t wait! My only complaint is that it’s too short at a half an hour but that just leaves us wanting more.

Jennifer Coolidge had another moment when she won Supporting Actress, Limited Series or Movie, for The White Lotus. She’s actually in the second season although it’s taking place at another resort. She opened by saying her lavender bath made her bloated and nervous. My favorite part was when she danced to the music playing her off. You know they switched it to something funkier for her!

Jennifer is in Dolce & Gabbana, and as much as those guys are problematic a-holes they did a decent job dressing people last night. This gown is striking.

I say D&G was decent, not great, because Kaley Cuoco’s D&G gown was a Barbiecore ballet dancer snoozefest with a tulle mullet and floral appliques down the front. Kaley was nominated for Lead Actress, Comedy for The Flight Attendant, which went to Jean Smart. More on Jean in another post! Kaley made her red carpet debut with her new beau, Tom Pelphrey.

So much this. Her “Fresh Air” interview with Terry Gross was on yesterday as I drove to work and it was must-listen radio. It’s glorious when the good guys finally finish first.

Exactly what I said in my head as I read this news. Sweet baby Jesus and the grown one indeed!!!!

I was so happy for Sheryl! Her acceptance speech and song were just so….joyful. It was a warm, fun Emmy moment.

I wasn’t going to watch the Emmys, and ended up turning them on and keeping them on bc the show was run really well. I liked seeing the main celebs/nominees at tables like that, I liked the overall set up, I liked the pace (sometimes it felt a little too fast), I liked that it ended at 11 pm on the dot. Now that is too late for me so I’m tired this morning, lol, but it was more fun than I thought it was going to be.

I’m so happy for her! I LOVE that show and she is great. They showed a clip of her kids on the Today show this morning and it was so cute. Happy tears!

I was switching back and forth between the Emmys and some other stuff, and happen to pop in just as they were announcing SLR’s category. So glad I caught it! I got goosebumps.
So well deserved and such a fantastic powerful response to winning.

Quinta looked great, love that insta photo she posted.

I feel like this is a new thing since the pandemic? To post award-show dress shots on social media? I like it.

I tuned in too late and missed Sheryl’s, but I am thrilled she won and will go back and watch her speech. I’ve been a fan of hers since the 80s, it’s wonderful to see her still having a great career and achieving this success. A well deserved win!
I was pretty happy with all the winners.

  9. Case says:

I don’t watch most of these shows and still really enjoyed the night. It was fun and entertaining yet still efficient enough to end on time! And Sheryl’s win was so special and memorable.

My takeaway from the night is that Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez should host the Oscars.

  10. Sue E Generis says:

People always use the word ‘epic’ for things that aren’t, but her acceptance speech absolutely was. I would venture to say it was the best acceptance speech I’ve ever heard at one of these shows. Truly moving and inspiring.

And she’s 65! She looks incredible.

Sheryl Lee Ralph is a queen and I was overjoyed when she and Quinta won. “Abbott Elementary” is a wonderful show — funny, warm and real. Ralph’s speech was brilliant. (Her husband is a Pennsylvania state senator. The state Democrats were celebrating on Twitter like they’d just won an election.)

  11. Chantal says:

I have always loved her and am so happy for her. Finally and about time!! She’s great in Abbott Elementary and in Motherland: Fort Salem as US President (Motherland was unfortunately cancelled). Many congrats to the always beautiful Ms. Ralph!

  12. Well Wisher says:

It was beautiful, reminded me of Darlene Love’s Oscar Acceptance speech and much more.
Sheryl Lee Ralph is simply beautiful and talented.

  13. Imara219 says:

I saw Black Twitter tearing up Jimmy Kimmel for his ridiculous stunt of being on the stage during Quinta Brunson’s acceptance speech. It was disrespectful, and it says so much of what BIWOC has to go through.

  14. MsGnomer says:

Jennifer Coolidge is wonderful. I need to rewatch “Best In Show” for some laughs. She was so good in “The White Lotus.” Looking forward to the next season. <3
