Laverne Cox in Jean Paul Gaultier at the Emmys: fun and unique?

Laverne Cox and Loni Love did a great job hosting the red carpet on E! last night. As Kaiser tweeted, there were good vibes on the Emmys carpet and they definitely contributed to that. Laverne was in this costume look Jean Paul Gaultier dress designed by Olivier Rousteing. It was weird and fashion-forward yet retro. Another actress may have looked goofy in it, but she pulled it off.

Emmy Award winner Lizzo was in Giambattista Valli, in a giant poof of a red tulle gown. Do you remember Rihanna’s iconic pink gown at the 2015 Grammys? That was also Giambasttista Valli. Lizzo won for Best cCompetition Program, for Watch Out for the Big Girls, and her speech, below, was so heartwarming. She talked about the importance of representation and telling everyone’s stories and called out to her big girls in the audience! I’m so happy for her!

Sarah Paulson was nominated last night and she co-presented the Governors Award with Shonda Rhimes. That went to the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which has done groundbreaking work on representation of girls and women in media. Sarah wore Louis Vuitton. This was a big look and I liked the idea of it, but the execution – with the giant trailing grommet belt – is a little off. Also I don’t like her hair that way. Sorry! I like a whispier pixie.

Presenter HoYeon Jung was also in Louis Vuitton, in a dress that reads like Chanel at first. I think that’s due to the print because Chanel would find a way to screw up this gorgeous sleek gown. I love seeing her on the red carpet as she’s a model and it shows. I wish that Squid Game won more awards last night, but I think that the fact that it came out a year ago worked against it. Squid Game did win Best Directing – Drama and Lee Jung-Jae won Lead Actor.

HoYeon’s dress, perfect for her, love it!

It is and it does give off some Channel vibes.

As for Sarah Paulson, she should live by the word or Coco Channel, take one thing off before you leave. That belt is a big no.

      • SquiddusMaximus says:

Ohh, I LOVED the belt with the skirt! But the whole look was jarring with the weird, square, Puritan bib-thing — like, what in the world IS that? It’s what I should be wearing whenever I eat lobster or buffalo wings. It is a tool, not a lewk. I would have preferred a simple tank with the skirt/belt.

Weirdly, I loved all of Sarah Paulson’s outfit, so unique. Would have been better if she’d worn choker that was closer to match to, or picked up color of, her belt.

I cried during Lizzo’s acceptance speech. When she said the bit about not seeing anyone like her growing up, who was fat, and Black, and beautiful, so she had to be it for herself, I got teary eyed. It was a great speech and her excitement and happiness was so plain to see. I loved her dress – not my favorite overall, but she pulled it off.

Loved Lizzo’s speech, her dress, and Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls Show. Most especially love the new album!

  3. Twin Falls says:

No on Laverne Cox’s dress for me.

    Lizzo looked gorgeous and radiant.

    • BothSidesNow says:

I am actually digging Cox’s dress!! And if anyone can carry it, it’s her!!

As for Lizzo, I am so happy for her!! She loves who she is and isn’t apologetic for any of it!! She deserves all the accolades, love and support as she has fought for so many years just to be HER, and seen in all of her glory ☺️☺️☺️

    • kirk says:

Cox’s dress is intriguing and she pulls it off. With the hip-level side wings looks like designers took inspiration from Foundation costumes for Eto Demerzel (Laura Birn).

  4. lucy2 says:

I like all of these except for Sarah’s, but I almost never like her fashion choices.
Lizzo’s look is fantastic. Few people could pull that dress off, but she did, and was fabulous.

  5. Lightpurple says:

Henry Winkler tweeted a picture of himself standing next to Lizzo last night and it is the epitome of joy.

  6. jferber says:

Yes, Laverne, show them how it’s done. Lizzo and Sarah Paulsen were exquisite too.
