The Foreign Office offered ‘profound apologies’ to Crown Princess Mary

In retrospect, there were many parts of Queen Elizabeth II’s mourning period and funeral which went very well. The Brits know how to do pageantry, and much of that stuff went off without a hitch. But in retrospect, smaller decisions were made and they turned out to be really bad, bad enough to overshadow the larger set pieces. The Windsors’ need to be seen as punitive towards the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was one of those overshadowing decisions. Another was the chaotic decision-making towards Europe’s other monarchies, like putting kings and queens on buses and making a point to uninvite Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary. Considering the complete randos who turned up at the funeral, it looks especially bad that the Windsors made such a point of “uninviting” CP Mary. Now it looks like Buckingham Palace won’t even apologize to her directly – they’ve left the Foreign Office to clean up the mess.

The Foreign Office has offered its ‘profound apologies’ to the Danish Royal family after Princess Mary was invited to Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral by mistake. The FCDO sent an apology to the Danish Royal Household via the Danish Embassy, a spokesperson told MailOnline on Tuesday.

The Danish Royal family had originally confirmed Princess Mary’s attendance on September 13, in a statement reading: ‘HM The Queen and the Crown Prince Couple [will be] present at the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II’.

The invitation mistakenly led the Danish Royal family to believe that Queen Margrethe II’s guest, her son Prince Frederik, could also bring a plus one. However, in a statement released days later, they said that only, ‘Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness The Crown Prince’ would ‘participate from Denmark’ – making no mention of Princess Mary’s absence.

It has been claimed the ‘regrettable error’ was made due to the Foreign Office having to ‘send out many invitations within a short space of time.’ Protocol meant that official invites were sent to current heads of state who were allowed to bring one guest to the state funeral.

But questions remain over why the Dutch and Spanish Royal families had at least three guests each. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, of the Netherlands, were accompanied by his mother Princess Beatrix to Westminster Abbey yesterday. Meanwhile, Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia attended the late monarch’s funeral, with the former King Juan Carlos I and his wife Sofia also present.

A Foreign office spokesperson said: ‘The FCDO has passed on their profound apologies to the Danish Royal Household through the Danish Embassy.’

[From The Daily Mail]

Yep – if exiled and abdicated Juan Carlos gets a place of honor at the funeral, it makes no sense that CP Mary couldn’t come. Sandra Oh was there, for goodness sake. Sarah Ferguson was there, for goodness sake. Every half-cousin twice removed was there. But not the Crown Princess of Denmark. Part of me really does wonder if there were “concerns” in Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace about Mary in particular, simply because she is so attractive and accomplished. They couldn’t find a way to uninvite Queen Letizia, you know.

Yeah, Deadline reported that Bear Grylls attended the funeral. There was Plenty of room for Mary. They just didn’t want her there.

    • equality says:

Grylls is “Chief Scout for the United Kingdom’s Scouts youth program”.

      • Fortuona says:

And Sandra Oh is a member of the Order of Canada that is the reason she was there

And neither her nor Bear were sitting with the Heads of State

      • Duchcheese says:

Regardless, CP Mary shouldn’t have been un/disinvited, period.
Oh well, the Windsors are once back to their lives of being nothingburgers, so there’s that too. The shine is off now, the world has moved on away from them, can’t be any happier.

    • Feeshalori says:

I can’t get over they apologized for inviting her by mistake. How do you make a mistake by initially inviting a crown princess? The Middletons can attend but not Mary? “Oh dear, you weren’t supposed to be on the guest list, after all you’re a nobody. Too bad, so sad.” Ouch!

  2. Cece says:

I read that the Aussies are now mad at BRF too about the insulting disinvite b/c Crown Princess Mary is from Tasmania.

    • MissMarirose says:

I was wondering if the Aussies had something to say about it. They still follow her closely.
Also, iirc, her father was born in Scotland and even wore a kilt to her wedding to CP Fred. So I wonder if the Scots have picked up on this snub as well.

      • SugarHere says:

Chuck sure knows how to make friends! Exactly the way I anticipated in a previous post, the disinvite blunder would be followed by apologies served in the circumvoluted diplomatic English fashion. Humiliating Princess Mary this way, she the most unproblematic unassuming of all European royals? There’s no way this old school mistress type of humiliation can survive Charles.

William will probably be THE LAST British monarch in history. These people are methodically alienating the entiere planet. Look at Camilla’s facial expression of utter disgust, just because Meghan is standing beside her. The royal couple does not represent the best of the English nation, but they sure embody the worst of human nature.

      • Iz_Q says:

Yes, her father is from Edinburgh. Her late mother Henrietta was also from Scotland.

    • 809Matriarch says:

The new Prince & Princess of Wales are going to Australia on tour soon.

    • Iz_Q says:

I am wondering if the British FO wishes they’d just left things alone right about now. How is that “uninvite” turning out for them, huh?

See before the excuse always was well Kate is just the FFQ and Mary married to the next in line when they tried to spin Kate never accomplishing anything. But they cannot do that anymore. Kate is now Mary’s actual counterpart and Kate’s direct competition. The woman that Kate’s stans have been proclaiming is Kate’s BFF and style sister and soul sister or whatever.

I was wondering if Australia would say anything. Aussies consider Mary “THEIR” princess. She and Frederik are very loved there.

  3. Chantal says:

I guess they belatedly found out about the PPOWs upcoming tour – after gleefully publicizing the snub. And it was definitely a snub, not a “mistake” as they’re proclaiming. After all, improvisation isn’t a key skill set within this group.

  4. The Hench says:

If they were deliberately not inviting any woman more accomplished than Kate then there wouldn’t be any women in attendance at all. Nah – I think this was just a mess up by someone.

    • Queen Meghan’s Hand says:

I keep going back and forth with this but what’s that theory called where the most absurd, ridiculous reason or cause for an event is the truthful one?

      • Feeshalori says:

Occam’s Razor, where the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. You can also apply Murphy’s Law, where anything that can possibly go wrong will go wrong and in the worst possible way. I believe they just dropped the ball on this one.

      • Queen Meghan’s Hand says:

Oh! Then yeah, I think it’s just gross incompetence.

    • Seaflower says:

Plus Fredrick and Mary obviously are in love. Can’t have break in protocol with them holding hands, can we? People might compare them to W & Khate.

      • Iz_Q says:

And they hold hands, arms around each other all the time! They’ve even (GASP!) kissed in public before separating to go on separate engagements and then (GASP!) kissed again when reuniting after separate engagements when they’ve been on official visits.

The BM has gotten deranged with the selective and/or invented protocol when it suits them. It is absolutely absurd!

  5. Jen says:

Well Mary is everything Kate isn’t, accomplished, eloquent, hard working and has a husband who loves and wants to be with her. They can’t have anyone comparing Kate to Mary.

    • Ozzie3 says:

She’s also Australian born. Many of us are holding our breath that Albanese will get a successful vote for a Republic over the line, here’s hoping this is another nail in the monarchy coffin.

      • Carrie says:

Could fellow Aussies please email the office of the PM to register a protest about the upcoming tour of Peggy and Waity. We should not have to pay for their PR porn tour.

    • BeanieBean says:

I don’t know, I agree with The Hench. Every woman there was more accomplished than Kate. I think they bungled badly, both in the doing of it & in their explanations. I cannot believe they’re trying to say that oh, gosh, we had to send out so many invitations so fast we got confused. Puhl-eaze. This is their job. This is what a state funeral (or state event) entails.

      • Isabella says:

The haste is weird too. They’d known the Queen was going to die for months and months.

      • kirk says:

Well now that the Early Life expert has already done her bit at being late for appointments she scheduled in Denmark, she won’t have to go back for a while, so BFD right?

    • Couch potato says:

Not to mention she’s moved across the world, had to learn a differen language and pick up the differences in the “culture” there.

      • BothSidesNow says:

CP Mary has made an exceptional effort to endear herself and she has certainly done so beautifully!! CP Mary is quite possibly the most well loved and endeared Princess in all of Europe.

The person at the top is the one that is responsible for this enormous blunder. This is simply a sign of utterly incompetent KC3 is. There’s simply no reason for them to have disinvited her. They should have sucked it up and found room for her.

On a side note, she is simply stunning and her husband doesn’t look too bad either.

      • ArtHistorian says:

        Fred looks better in person.

  6. ThatNotOkat says:

The British Royals might do pageantry well, but that’s it. All smoke and mirrors with no substance underneath. And never, ever let someone upstage the most insecure of the bunch–the leaders (and the future leaders’ wives)!

    • Liane says:

I feel like everything the military and church were involved in went well. There are procedures and they are followed, they don’t need to care who the players are. It’s the personal/political stuff that went to shit, whether that was the royal family, foreign offices, or the Palace players. Way too much personal and petty game playing went on.

  7. Talia says:

They knew they could overshadow Letizia by inviting Juan Carlos and having the story be about him. Mary has the bad taste not to have any dodgy relatives so she had to go.

  8. Becks1 says:

Even if her invitation was a complete mistake/oversight, uninviting her just looked SO bad, especially considering other royal houses had more than 2 guests.

I agree that the pageantry of the past week/10 days has been flawless, but there have been all these unforced errors, I guess, is the best way to describe it. No one is making Charles or William brief against Harry in the press. No one is telling the foreign office to uninvite a crown princess from another country, etc.

Its just felt a lot messier than it had to be in some ways.

    • equality says:

Yes. Once she was invited they should have shuffled whatever they needed to and accommodated her instead of looking like bumbling fools to the entire world.

    • C-Shell says:

This whole “uninviting” thing they did sporadically is just incredibly RUDE. So, what IF it was a mistake, own it assholes, find another seat for the extra guest that you didn’t plan for. FFS. These clowns are so so very bad at this stuff. SMDH.

      • dj says:

Agree with Cshell. Who “uninvites” someone? Especially at this level? If this was a wedding shower I would make room for 1 or 2 more, at this level it is complete BS.

    • Fortuona says:

The only one to take 3 was the House of Orange and that was because Beatrix was great mates with Liz as was her mother

      • M says:

All 4 Spanish Royals attended, including the disgraced former King who lives in exile (and is divorced in all but name from his wife).

      • Becks1 says:

@M – yup. Now they could say that was because JC was good friends with the Queen or whatever, but still, he was there, with Sofia.

Disinviting someone is just so breathtakingly rude that I cannot believe the foreign office messed up like this.

      • Bird says:

Another 3some was the Greek royal family in exile. The so called queen, CPrince and his American wife. The uninvite was a snub

    • Elizabeth says:

They could have just added an extra chair for Crown Princess Mary. Uninviting her was tacky and insulting to Denmark, Australia, and Scotland.

      • Iz_Q says:

Exactly. Just add a seat between Crown Prince Frederik and King Carl Gustav and scoot everyone down a smidge. Problem solved. No one would have been the wise. NOW, they have this unprofessional, disrespectful blunder on their hands. Plus it is such improper etiquette. You honor the invitation you sent….you don’t uninvite someone that accepted based on your own mistake!

    • PrincessK says:

The Palace is in a mess. One mistake after another. The courtiers are not just up to it and the standards are falling. The mess with the Sussexes owes a lot to courtiers who wield a lot of power because the royals are dependent on them and they are all protecting their own patches.
Getting invitations wrong is terrible, ant the inky pen incident should have been avoided.
Standards have dropped, the Queen was old for a long time and people took advantage of this. Unfortunately it looks like King Charles is already showing that he is not going to be able to do the right thing.

      • Concern Fae says:

This is what happens when you hire for loyalty and the bosses are jerks. You can’t get competent people, because they won’t put up with this garbage and can do better elsewhere.

Once you get the reputation for being racist, good people will stay away because you become a red flag on a resume. Charles used to get really good people to put up with him and his low pay because it looked good on your CV for international and foreign office jobs. People probably don’t want to work for him anymore.

Also, maybe Charles fired the person working on this. I remember seeing that notices were sent out during the Scottish funeral. I wondered why he didn’t wait until after the funeral. What a jerk.

    • L84Tea says:

Yeah, I found this particular f**k up to be one of the worst this past week. This is the future Queen of Denmark–someone who Charles will undoubtedly interact with, and who most definitely William will be interacting with. What on earth was Charles thinking???

  9. IForget says:

Oof they make a sexy pair.

Damn it’s crazy how bad some of these staffers are at their jobs. Ultimately though, Charles is at the head of it. He’s accountable now. This mistake (whether it wasn’t or wasn’t) reflects extremely poorly on him.

    • M says:

I love that picture of the two of them. She is every inch a future Queen. I have always thought Fred was cute in a boyish way. And Mary is a knockout of course.

      • L84Tea says:

They are a beautiful couple. Mary was made for that role.

      • Iz_Q says:

They’re stunning. Hard to believe she is 50 and he is 54!

      • ArtHistorian says:

There’s a really good picture among the formal photos from their wedding where’s she’s kissing his cheek. Really sweet.

On another note: The ruby-diamond tiara is just exquisite! It is on exhibition this year due to the celebration of her 50 year birthday – and I’m travelling to see it after I’ve finished emptying my parents’ house.

      • Nic919 says:

The photos of them released this year are such a contrast to the unprofessional photoshop mess of the Victorian ghost who turned 40. These photos exude future queen. Meanwhile the now future QC looked like a child play acting.

    • tamsin says:

Yep, it’s His Majesty’s Government now!

  10. Merricat says:

Uninviting a crown princess is plainly awful, and I do think Elizabeth would be horrified by it.

    • Blue Nails Betty says:

One of the things the queen was good at was protocols and hosting heads of state. I hope she haunts whoever fouled this up.

  11. ML says:

Okay, personally I feel that they should have swallowed their mistake and made room for Mary. However, then Mary would be the only crown prince/ss invited…perhaps due to egos, hierarchy, royalty relationships they felt it was less bad to uninvite Mary than to offend members from the other royal families of Europe for not having invited them? I don’t think that this is about Kate at all, though I could buy that she might feel threatened by someone like Mary.

    • Elizabeths says:

They invited all the royal families of Europe, including families who have long been deposed, like the Serbian, Greek, Romanian, and Bulgarian royals.

      • ML says:

@ElizabethS, Mary, Haakon, and Victoria are the remaining older European crown princes/ses and they’re all Scandinavian. Haakon (Norway) and Victoria (Sweden) were born royal whereas Mary (Denmark) is married into the family. That’s why I think the British FO/ royal family might have chosen to be incomprehensibly rude instead of just making room for her.
Also, something that gets noticed in Holland and is a bit awkward: Mary curtsies deeply to WimLex and Maxima in public. That’s considered weird here, and Maxima looks like she doesn’t quite know what to do when it happens. It gets explained as deep respect on Mary’s part. I’m sure other royal families are a bit less chill about stuff like this and not upsetting that pecking order might have been taken into consideration. Stupid decision though, and frankly I can’t imagine the British FO (who are taking the blame) not having run this by anyone in the RF since it’s such a huge slight.

      • ArtHistorian says:

Maxima and Mary are close friends – so I bet it is weird to have your friend curtsey to you. A few years back Max and Wax was on a State Visit to Denmark and it was just so palpable that the two couples had an absolute blast together, also Daisy is Wax’s godmother. He also held a very very good speech. I was really impressed with how well-written it was.

  12. molly says:

Sandra was definitely there as an honored member of the Canadian delegation.

Disinviting Mary was SUCH an unforced error. Did they literally not have a single seat left on the royal shuttle? She’s a high-profile and well-liked European royal. She’s about as VIP as it gets, outside of family, and I still can’t believe they screwed it up so bad.

    • Malificent says:

Yeah, inexusable. I’m sure they could have made space, and even if they couldn’t there are other ways to handle it. If I had been in charge (tee hee), I would have discreetly reached out to the Danish Royals and explained the error with profuse apologies. I would have then asked if Mary could invent a short, but severe, illness or find a polite excuse to decline the invite. Then, I would offer to invite Mary to BH after the mourning period to kick off some joint charitable or artistic project that would highlight Mary and show the BRF’s warmth and appreciation toward the DRF.

      • Fredegunda says:

@Maleficent I disagree that Mary should have to take on the burden of the FO’s mistake, but assuming she would be kind enough to do so, corona is still a thing and would not have been particularly suspicious as an excuse. On that note, Margrethe has just tested positive after returning from the funeral.

    • ArtHistorian says:

When Charles and Camilla visited Denmark some years ago – Mary and Fred met them on the tarmac, which they usually only do if it is someone they are personally close with (like the Dutch royals).

  13. Well Wisher says:

Queen Mary’s husband speech at their wedding included this item said directly to her father ” she is mine now”.
    Sounds familiar?
Good taste is easy when everything is executed as planned, in the event of human error, one fall or rise based on one’s actions.
This should not have reached the public domain and a handwritten note would’ve sufficed to indicate that ” the intent was not to cause harm”.
    In other words good manners.

An aside, Queen Mary’s tribute to her husband on his 50th birthday was astounding.

  14. MattBlu says:

Well, if Chucky the turd ever comes to Denmark, he should expect a very frosty welcome. They have insulted Crown Princess Mary, and other than CopyKeen Mary is well liked in Denmark. And I also would like to advise to C3tt that it might be better to not show up in Tasmania for the time being as well.

    • ArtHistorian says:

Daisy and her family are to well-bred that be that rude. It is mainly the British royals who are known for their public rudeness.

      • Iz_Q says:

I know that when Kate was in DK she was late for the morning event with the kids at the school. But I also heard rumors that she was late to her meeting with QMII and CP Mary….never got confirmation on that though. I DO know that the British embassy threatened DK press that if they dared ask Kate any questions, esp. about Andrew, they would be pulled from the press line. The DK press did NOT take kindly to that given that the DRF always make time to answer at least a couple of questions at their events.

      • MattBlu says:

That was not what I was implying. While the DRF as well as the officials of the Danish Court might be courteous and welcoming, the people at the street on the way to any venues and the Danish press are much less obligated to be friendly. I don’t know the Danish people that well, but I can’t imagine that anybody in Denmark took that well.

  15. Lizzie Bathory says:

As an aside, I love how CP Mary had the Danish Ruby Parure reworked, particularly the tiara.

    • M says:

That may be my favorite set of jewels in any Royal House (with the Dutch Stewart tiara variations a close 2nd). It’s unique but not in an ugly or outdated way. It’s subtle too, but really packs a punch under the right lighting.

      • L84Tea says:

That set is so gorgeous when worn together. The tiara, the necklace, the earrings, and the brooch (and the bracelet and ring) are so striking and elegant. I believe Fred gifted her the set on the eve of their wedding.

      • ArtHistorian says:

The Ruby-Diamond tiara is my favorite as well, with Daisy’s Perle Poire Parure a close second. I’ve seen the latter in person. It is gorgeous and the pearls are just huge!

The ruby parure has such an interesting history. The elements of the tiara was ordered by Marchale Bernadotte for Napoleon’s coronation. When Bernadotte became king, the jewels came to Sweden. They came to Denmark with Princess Lovisa’s marriage to Frederik VIII.

It is also a piece that has been altered several times. As CP Alexandrine wore it as a slender wreath across her forehead (1920s style), Queen Ingrid altered it to a more traditional triangle shape and then Mary altered it again to fit her better.

  16. Lizzie says:

Good thing Waity got her chance to go down the big slide, she won’t ever be invited back.

  17. girl_ninja says:

What can be said that hasn’t already been said? The British Royal family botched this one big time. They really do leave a mess with whatever they do. Is it so difficult to find good management and to run a good comms department? Embarrassing.

    • Iz_Q says:

The karmic thing is that while this has blown up in their faces, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary are of to NYC at the UN attending high profile events/meetings for the next 3 days…21 events total. I am LOLing given Wills wanted to take the UN by storm so bad!!

British FO should have just honored the invitation as originally sent (which is proper etiquette) and be done with it. Instead they look like a-holes.

  18. Trillion says:

I’ve never been a fan of monarchy because I don’t think people are special because of their lineage. But now I have outright disdain for this outdated and oppressive institution. Good job, British Monarchists.

  19. L4Frimaire says:

They decided to use Crown Princess Mary as a shield to try to cover up their vindictiveness towards the Sussexes. This wasn’t a blunder but a deliberate calculation. They decided to embarrass this woman internationally. Would not be surprised if they use withdrawn invitations in future.

    • Heyhey2 says:

Bingo, they think they’re slick, (one of the oldest traits of a covert racist)but them again it wouldn’t surprise me of they did it on purpose as well, somethig might have happened between CP Mary and CP Kate too

    • Christine says:

I don’t think they are smart enough for a cover. They were all too focused on damning Harry and Meghan, again, some more, they lost the plot.

Which is more of an insult to CP Mary.

  20. bambusdrache says:

Crown Princess of Denmark, not Belgium ;o)

  21. Blue Nails Betty says:

They could have disinvited that fascist jackwad Bolsonaro and given that chair to CP Mary.

  22. AmB says:

Well, be fair. It WAS a really complicated job.

They had to “send out many invitations within a short space of time” and the event was so unforeseeable and you know all those royal people move all the time.

They probably couldn’t find anyone low-rank enough to lick the stamps or something.

  23. Kelsey says:

I’m not the most versed on royal houses, but from what I’ve read CP Mary is easily one of my favorite royals, and from the looks of it Denmark has completely embraced her as their own. Isn’t she allowed to be recognized as Regnant when mama-in-law and Fred are out of the country?

Yeah, they really fumbled with this one. I’m surprised I didn’t see Australian twitter popping off about it.

    • ArtHistorian says:

Yes, Mary can act as Regent. This is a huge honour because generally it is only royals born into the House of Glücksborg that can hold that office. The only other one who got this honour was the Queen’s mother Ingrid of Sweden, who was incredibly well-respected.

  24. Roan Inish says:

Maybe it was Kate who insisted she be disinvited because she made Kate feel stupid or incompetent when she went to Denmark and showed off her Early Child pie charts and Mary snickered or some such thing. That’s all I got.

    • tamsin says:

I shouldn’t think Kate has any say or influence at this point. The funeral would have been planned by the Queen and courtiers and I believe carrying it out is specifically assigned to some duke who inherits the position. Even Charles, in some sense is a player in the drama, so to speak. This is an example of the incompetence of the so-called gold standard the courtiers think they are and the Foreign Office and shows the incompetence of the current Tory government. Seems to have been more than one snafu about who is invited and who is not, and the tabloids have had a bit of a field day. All the pomp and circumstance seems to have gone brilliantly, but behind the scenes regarding how people are being treated and diplomacy is being carried out- well not smooth, brilliant, or diplomatic, or even decent.

      • ArtHistorian says:

The British government has been a clown show for years,, not surprising that the clownery now extends to the civil service.

  25. lucy2 says:

    Such a humongous misstep.
On a superficial note, her gown in that portrait is STUNNING.

  26. FashionandFaith says:

Old Clusterfuck Chuck’s reign is off to a fantastic start.

  27. Iz_Q says:

In reply to @Kelsey: Yes. As of 2019 Mary is able to act as Head of State when both the Queen and Frederik are abroad. She was approved by Parliament to act in that capacity. The other two are Princess Benedikte (the Queen’s sister) and Prince Joachim (The Queen’s youngest son). She lives in Germany and he currently works at the Danish Embassy in Paris. Mary is only the second person not in the Danish line of succession to serve in this capacity. The other was Queen Ingrid, Frederik’s late grandmother.

  28. Jules says:

This was a colossal mistake followed by a series of poor decisions. At best it was embarrassing and at worst it was highly disrespectful. Charles should call and personally apologize to her.

  29. Iz_Q says:

And now the Mirror posts a photo of Princess Marie and identifies HER as Princess Mary (using an incorrect title).
    https://twitter.com/lordrosey/status/1572293593204756481?s=20&t=qpXbs0PoadmmEp9B0PlrrA

  30. tamsin says:

I think the whole thing was due to imcompetence- nothing personal. Howerver, they seem to have not applied whatever guidelines they set up consistently and fairly.

  31. Pam says:

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during Kate’s visit with her—what exactly happened??? I’m wondering if perhaps Kate didn’t want her there. If nothing else, she’s accomplished and looks about 10 years younger than Kate, even though she’s 50!

  32. Lizzie says:

I can’t help seeing the parallels between Princess Mary and Duchess Meghan: both commoners who married in, both highly accomplished, both very much their own person.

If this is the BRF way of saying that “commoners aren’t welcome” they can stuff it. Complete incompetence and buffoonery, top to bottom.

    • Merricat says:

Waity is a commoner who married in.

And while Princess Mary and Duchess Meghan made the most of their intelligence, work experience and compassion to do great work….Waity shops. Goes to the gym. Shirks most of her patronages and charities. Can’t read 2 lines without referring to cards. Hasn’t learned a f*cking thing about what it means to be in that position. She takes but she doesn’t give back, that’s the big problem.

Where are the profound apologies to the Sussexes for the multiple insults/”screw-ups” pertaining to them? Those were all meant and they stand by them, I guess. I think the Sussexes jetted back to Cali today? I hope so!!!!

I heard about this yesterday and my first thought was that they uninvited her to try and be like “see, it isn’t just M& H we disinvite to things!!l “ Good grief.

Pretty much, but it came at some whole other person’s expense, all the while lecturing H& M about what them “hurting” the family😒

I’m Tasmanian and I’m especially livid, FYI. I’m also a big fan of Albo (Anthony Albanese), and I wouldn’t put it past him to subtly pack the events for the upcoming Au Wailing Tour with republicans.

I had been curious if this incident had been reported in Australia and what type of response it was getting. From all I have seen of their trips there, Mary (and Frederik) are very popular in Australia.

Buckingham Palace won’t apologize because BP was not the ones who were in charge of deciding who to invite and sending out the invitations. The British govt is the one in charge of putting on the state funeral for their head of state, which is why it was paid for by them, and the British Foreign Ministry are the people who are responsible for handling the invites to foreign royalty and heads of state and politicians etc.

So it’s entirely appropriate that they are the ones apologize to CP Mary. It was actually their f-ck up, not Buckingham Palace’s. They SHOULD apologize.

    • sammi says:

So you really believe that the Foreign Office just like the RAVEC security council are completely independent of decisions as major as this for Royal Invites and dis-invites? Seems like the propaganda is working and Charlie,Willileaks and KKKhate are working the media narrative very well………………so far.

      • A says:

I don’t understand what this has to do propaganda, lmao. Ngl, it feels an awful lot like you’re saying I’ve been influenced by the propaganda mill to somehow shill for Charles, Baldy, and Baldy’s Weasel Wife, which is a huge stretch on your part if you’re saying that based on this one comment.

What I said is just facts, in the same way that saying the royal family had a huge amount of input in who’s invited to the funeral is also a fact. It’s just that that’s not the conversation that’s being had here. The article is about the BFO apologizing for uninviting CP Mary. I’m just explaining why they are the ones who made the public apology, and why Charles probably didn’t do it.

Why this happened, whether this was an honest f-ck up, if they were told to do this by someone in the RF, if this is the RF conveniently not needing to take responsibility for the sh-t that they do, how much influence the RF had over the guest list for the funeral–those are all important and relevant points of discussion. But I didn’t talk about those bc Kaiser, in her post, was wondering why Charles didn’t apologize, and there was an explanation for that.

Whether people find that explanation valid or not is for them to decide.

It has been reported that William is trying to get a ‘Nacho’ type friend to boost his PR and popularity. Frederik is the one that they want! Therefore, his wife needs to be isolated so they can chat and bond together without her there as she may well not be as keen to link with William and Kate for any Australian or USA visits where they are both popular already.

That’s next level xerox/not so” single” white male sh** he is doing to his own little brother, smh Harry will never have any peace with him.

    • Iz_Q says:

If true, good luck with that. Frederik is way out of William’s league in every single thing! Not even close.

I do wonder if now that W/K are PPOW, that they all of a sudden want to ingratiate themselves with the “Scandinavian Six” as I call them..meaning the Crown Prince Couples of Denmark, Norway and Sweden…they are all about the same age range with kids ranging from teenagers to about I think maybe 6 or 7. Too bad the BRF have spent years being snooty and looking down their noses at the Continental Royals.

  39. ML says:

I spoke to an elderly gentleman who worked for Queen Juliana in the 70s. Presumably much of what he told me holds true for QE2 as well. So, based on his work experience:
    1. QE2 was Queen Sofia’s godmother, so she and Juan Carlos were always going to be invited to this funeral. The people closest to Elizabeth rank highest, potentially leading to the snafu with Felipe. The godparents connection also explains the close bonds to the royal houses of Greece and Eastern Europe.
    2. The basic list of who to invite to the funeral has been in place for years. Royal households do not like to scramble.
    3. It would have been very clear exactly who was invited. Mary was on that invitation. (As is obvious now, but the man I spoke with said her name and/or title would be listed.)
    4. Due to whatever reason, Mary (and probably others) had to be cut from that list after QE2’s death. The man I spoke with said that someone higher up had to make that call and probably someone from Charles’ household had a say in that matter.
    5. Any animals that deal with the public must be trained to be able to deal with crowds.
    6. The Dutch queen/king doesn’t make mistakes and therefore doesn’t need to apologize. The man I spoke with said that this is pretty much true of all monarchs. Even if Charles or someone close to him asked that Mary be disinvited, the likelihood that BP would officially take the blame is close to nonexistent.
    7. Essentially all of the now elderly or deceased princes/kings who visited Holland during this man’s working period cheated on their wives. Most of them were discrete about it, but the two who apparently were total f-bois: Prince Bernhard (Holland) and Carl Gustav (Sweden).

    • JaneBee says:

@ML Thanks so much for sharing this tea! I never understood how HRH Beatrix put up with her husband! I understand the Dutch people only tolerated him out of respect for her. I guess, like QEII and PP, she really loved him. Carl Gustav generally comes across as the most unpleasant a-hole with zero redeeming features.

    • A says:

Thank you for the insight, @ML!!!!! It’s been known for decades that Carl-Gustav was a dog, and a total d-ck on top of that. It’s just that a lot of his actual affairs haven’t spilled out into the public eye and become national scandals in the way that Juan Carlos’ shenanigans did.

Wrt point 4–I don’t know why cuts were made to the guest list, but I can hazard something of a guess as to what sort of reasoning was applied, by Charles + his household, on who should be invited vs. who should be cut, and it was that they would invite all of the currently reigning and formerly reigning monarchs, while cutting all the heirs apparent (and their spouses) from the guest list.

Because notice who wasn’t there. CP Victoria from Sweden wasn’t there. Haakon from Norway wasn’t there. Many of the heirs to reigning monarchs who did attend were attending specifically on behalf of, and to represent, the monarch.

This isn’t a hard and fast rule, because just taking a quick look at the guest list shows that there are a lot of exceptions to it, but a lot of those exceptions seem to have only attended the service at Windsor, OR, they come from royal families that are no longer reigning (like Greece).

I’d hazard another guess and say that the reason why Charles went ahead and had the heirs omitted from the guest list is because they are going to be invited for his coronation. Traditionally speaking, reigning royals do not attend the coronation, only their heirs, so this could have been the calculus at work here when it came to limiting the guest list.
