Taylor Swift’s detractors will face The Wrath of Swifty

taylorswiftinstyle09

Here’s Taylor Swift on the cover of December’s In Style Magazine. I like it, but it’s not a groundbreaking cover shot or anything – In Style covers rarely are. But it is a big deal that Taylor got the cover for the December issue, one of the biggest “gets” of the year. Just goes to show you that Taylor is a girl on the move, she’s the new family-friendly “It Girl” after Miley Cyrus’s family-friendly image crashed and burned with half-naked pictures, Teen Choice pole-dancing, and general sketchiness. Our little Taylor would never do anything like that, right? Actually, I totally believe she wouldn’t. Maybe it’s an act, but this kid seems very genuinely wholesome. Here’s People Magazine’s excerpt from In Style’s cover story:

It’s the next best thing to having Taylor Swift show up in the flesh in your living room – the country singer in 3-D on the cover of InStyle magazine’s December issue, out Nov. 20.

But the special effects and fashion-magazine first is beside the point for fans who want to learn more about her rumored romance with Taylor Lautner, he costar in the upcoming movie Valentine’s Day.

“He and I have gotten really close,” she says. “It would be confusing on the set with two Taylors in the same scene. They were like, ‘Taylor, on your mark – no, not you, the other one!’ So halfway through the shoot, I said, ‘How about you guys call me Swifty and call him Taylor?’ ”

Yet, at the same time, she seems to deflate the rumors.

“I’ve never thought it was a curse to be single, and at this point in my life, I’m in the mind-set where I choose to be single –] like I got to light scented candles and write in my diary and I wouldn’t have time for that if I had a boyfriend right now!”

As for Lautner, he enjoyed portraying her wanna-be boyfriend on the silver screen – if that’s all it was.

“Taylor is hilarious,” he says. “It was definitely not hard to play her love interest.”

[From People]

Meh. The bad thing about being so wholesome is that you give really boring interviews. In other Swifty news, Taylor is not dead. Apparently that rumor was going around over the weekend, but it’s just another fake report.

Meanwhile, Wynonna Judd has had to backtrack from her (bitchy) comments about Taylor Swift CMA “Entertainer of the Year” win last week. Judd told reporters on the CMA red carpet that Taylor’s win was “too much too soon. Time is God’s way of keeping everything from happening at once. It’s just too much of a good thing too soon.” Now Wynonna has either felt the Swifty wrath, or she just realized that she was pissing all over Taylor’s award, just like Kanye West. Judd wrote on her website a few days later: “My intent was not to take anything away from her talent and contributions to the country music industry, all of which are truly unprecedented for an artist of any age. Taylor is a beautiful, hard-working young woman that deserves the success she has had and I support her as an artist and as a woman in the business.” Jeez… can anyone just let Swifty win an award in peace? Does everyone have to chime in?

Much like the Kanye West thing, the Wynonna Judd thing became a touchy subject for Swifty defenders. Tim McGraw defended Swifty, saying “I’ve been doing this a long time and she’s got a better head on her shoulders than I do, so I don’t know how anybody could complain about that.” His wife, Faith Hill also defended Swifty: “I think she worked her tail off the last couple [of years] and she deserves to win.” But Randy Travis just had to step up, saying “As a writer, she is a phenomenal talent and when you look at the body of work that she has written at the age when she came into this business, it’s remarkable. It really is. But do I think that Entertainer of the Year might have been a little early.” Ruh-roh! Randy Travis, welcome to The Wrath of Swifty. You will not take her down!

I think the cover is “too soon”.

She needs to struggle a few more years before she gets the InStyle cover.

  2. gg says:

Oh don’t be a Judd. At least her hair looks better and the eye makeup isn’t clotted on like mud.

  3. Lauren says:

It took a while for me to recognize Taylor’s talent for songwriting. I was fearful that she was another Miley Cyrus, but more attractive. The difference is that Taylor comes from a stable moral family, and has constant guidance. She works constantly, and I hope this phenomenal young woman doesn’t burn out. The Judds looked like botox backwoods robots, and should keep their mouths shut.

  4. Firestarter says:

    gg- I was being sarcastic. : )

  5. Iggles says:

I’m getting sick of Taylor Swift in the media. I’m sure she’s a nice person, because that’s what people keep saying about her, BUT I’m getting tired of hearing about how wholesome she is!

The whole Kanye thing was blown out of proportion and now people are falling over themselves not to say anything critical of her — lest they ensnared in the media backlash. I don’t think all the comments of her celebrity defenders are genuine, I think a lot of them are trying to cover their own behinds.

For the record, I think she is very talented. But I also think it’s too soon and with building her up on this huge pedestal is going to be tough maintaining such momentum in her career going forward.

  6. wow says:

@ GG “don’t be a Judd” is now the new “I’ma let you finish”. I’ll have to use yor line on somebody at least once today. Thanks. 😉

As for Taylor, she’ll learn (if she hasn’t already) to let her haters become her motivators. Anytime someone dos something exceptional or gets recognition for doing something noteworthy, there will always be detractors, negative Nanacy’s and Debbie Downers.

  7. Erin says:

I’m hoping that Wynonna’s right because if she does burn out then at least I won’t have to hear her whining blasting at me from every radio station 15 times a day. Are her supporters gonna try and take me down for that one now?

  8. Jillian says:

It was only Entertainer of the YEAR, that’s it! She owned ’09. Get over it already!

  9. Beth says:

I’m sure nobody cares but traditionally the EOY Award has been given to artists who have been in industry for years and had released many albums. It’s only been in the last 10-15 years that newer artists have won the award. It’s kind of hard to ignore artists like Garth Brooks and the Dixie Chicks who were selling a massive amount of cds and concert tickets. I also think Taylor’s age, 18 or 19, people are concerned about her future (burnout). Neither Judd or Travis said that she didn’t deserve the award just that she’s so young and new.

  10. Westender says:

Taylor seems like a very grounded young woman and has the talent to match. The problem she may face is that the public and media will now be watching to see where she goes from here. With the popularity will be a increased focus on her personal life and also the critics will be ready to slam her music if her next album does not equal the success of her first

  11. Daisy says:

Taylor is great, even if she dosn’t have mariah’s voice, she is talented. And she is a young girl.I don’t understand why people would have resentment towards someone who hasn’t done anything negative.Who cares if you don’t like hearing her songs on the radio, turn it off.She is not going anywhere. She has years of songwriting in her.

  12. atticus says:

@Jillian – amen to that! She owned 2009. Back in the day before American Idol and reality TV and a trillion celebrity magazines and blogs, it was harder to get your name out there. The dues you paid were different. Taylor seems to work her a$$ off. Just saw the Dateline special on her, aired on CMT over the weekend, and the more I see of her, the more impressed I am with her…she orchestrated every bit of her tour this year, she writes her own songs, she plays her own instruments, she sings LIVE…there is no question in my mind that she’s earned every single accolade she’s gotten this year, regardless of her age. She’s been at it for 3 years…it’s not like she put out one song and BOOM all of this happened.

That said…it’d be wise for her to take a step back out of the media and keep a low key profile before she gets any more oversaturated press coverage. I think she’s a wonderful role model for all ages, I just hope she doesn’t fall victim to being so hot that everyone wants a piece of her, they get their info and then they turn on her and take her down. That’s pretty much the playbook for any young celebrity.

  13. hunnybe says:

Thank you Iggles!*clapping*.Nothing against Taylor but she is so overexposed now. I liked her so much better before the ‘let’s make Taylor feel better campaign’.

  14. Kate says:

    1. Taylor Swift has sold more albums in 2009 than any other (living) artist, of any genre. For a country artist, that is unbelievable. She deserved EOY.

    2. Wynonna was interviewed again about her “too much too soon” comments the night after the CMAs at the “Blind Side” premier, and was specifically asked when she won her first award. The answer: 17. That could have a little something to do with her backtracking. That and the fact that she is now totally irrelevant in the country music industry.

  15. amy says:

This isn’t the Lifetime Achievement award and it’s not who’s the most talented singer (srlsy, I don’t want to hear her compared to Carrie one more time) award either. It’s the ENTERTAINER of the YEAR . Taylor totally deserves this. It was totally her year. The fact that she’s so young is indictive of her talent and her rise to fame also comes from the fact that media has changed significantly over the past ten years.

The Judds and whoever else need to recognize that things ARE different now and there is no going back. An artist can upload their music online and instantly reach a huge audience. Myspace played a big role with Taylor getting her name out there. Times have changed, like it or not.

  16. Megan says:

i agree w/ kate… she has worked hard and she didn’t just blow up. i heard on the radio that a record co. was gonna sign her at 13 but they wouldn’t let her write her own songs so she declined. i’m actually glad she’s so wholesome! she’s a celebrity that i wouldn’t mind my daughter looking up to.

  17. lucy2 says:

She seems like a sweet kid and she’s enjoyed a lot of success. I think all the other musicians should stop whining about her awards – it just comes across as snobbish and jealous, whether they are or not. If they don’t like a relative newcomer getting all the awards, then step it up and give her some competition!
Though, while I can’t blame her for taking advantage of every opportunity, I would caution her to watch her media exposure. She doesn’t seem to have the inner-trashy gene that Miley does, so if she keeps working and stays out of trouble, she should have a long and lucrative career.

  18. For Sooth? says:

In the end her own voice will take her down. To those of you that watched her behind the scenes video and started to put her on a pedestal, look behind the curtain. Even in that video she sings so terribly off key in the snippets of live performances that it begs the question as to why she is allowed to perform in the first place. Wynonna and all of country music must be so embarrassed for her. She is the epitome of a studio constructed “artist”. I’m not drinking the Taylor koolaid and I pity those on board with this charade.

Also, I guess people didn’t watch her latest CMA performance because she did stripper pole AND constant stripper hair swing. I thought her head was going to twist off. She also did the obligatory semi prone on floor with forward hip thrust. It was disgusting to watch. Put the Koolaid down people. Let her write her damn songs but she is a rip off singer when it comes to real talent, talent like Wynonna and Randy Travis. MORE people should speak out about this so that execs will stop this star “building”.

  19. faith says:

i like taylor,im not much of a fan of hers, but she doesnt bother me,i think she is a grounded girl with a good head on her shoulders, she seems very sweet and very humble and its very refreshing to see a girl of her age who is a good role model.i respect everyone who has an opinion, even wynona’s opinion, although i find her comment insensitive because when someone wins an award even if you may not agree with it,i think people should respect that and let them enjoy it, “saying that its too soon”, it may be in her opinion, but i think judd is being rude, because she is implying that taylor didnt work hard for this award, even though she is young, this didnt come easy for her….if she cant say anything nice then why say anything at all and why put down someone who did win “entertainer of the year”..theres no need to be a b*tch everyone has their time to shine and it was taylor’s night to shine!..judd has a problem with young country today, this isnt the first time she has spoken out and has hurt people’s feelings, she said right in front of carrie’s face, that her music was vanilla, that is not classy..i think judd needs to learn how to respect artist even though she may not like their music or even if she thinks its too soon, this isnt her choice, its the fans choice, we are the ones going to our favorite artist concerts,we are their supporters we should have a decision who we think is the “entertainer of the year”…the fans have voted and they voted for taylor, judd is also insulting the fans choice of artist….maybe “mama’s shouldnt let their babie’s grow up to be wynona judd”…

  20. cuppycake says:

I think she’s great and all…but she’s so bloody BORING!
Really, she needs to limit her interviews.

  21. mikayla says:

i love miss carrie and miranda i was hoping they would have won “vocalist of the year award”…since they both have so much talent. to me that was a huge disapointment of the night seeing the “britney spears” of country music beat the “christina aguilera’s” of country music…taylor is a good songwriter, musician, and entertainer, and shes a mediocre singer but the best vocalist i dont tihnk so..i was really confused on this one?? i mean reba and martina ?? were also in that line up…i dont believe that taylor deserved FVOTY…but she has many pop fans that vote since shes a mixed recording artist and remixes her music. however the “entertainer of the year award” she did deserve because she very hard,..i guess when you are popular in 2 genres with country and pop she will win awards that leave you scratching your head like “what happened”…oh well theres always next year and i hope carrie and miranda take it !!
