Rooney Mara wore McQueen & a center-part to the SAGs: cute or blah?

I watched Women Talking over the weekend and I admire all of the actresses for their performances, and Sarah Polley for her work directing the film. I don’t know if Rooney Mara was always the first choice for her character, but I found her… I don’t know, slightly miscast? A discussion for another time. In any case, Rooney came out to the SAGs with her Women Talking costars and, if it’s a red carpet, you know Rooney will wear Alexander McQueen and do a flat center-part and not wear any jewelry. The only shock here is that the dress isn’t all-black. She wore this lacy white-and-black look and I’m kind of tired of all of this? She’s got this commitment to looking as severe as possible.

Michelle Williams in Dior. Kind of boring and subdued. It’s fine but unmemorable.

Elizabeth Debicki in Dior. Big Anya Taylor Joy vibes, right? Does Dior just make all of their ladies style themselves that way? Anyway, I dislike this, mostly because of the pea-soup color.

Jessie Buckley in Dior. This wrinkled tin foil dress ain’t it, but I still enjoy her. She’s not a fashion girl, but she’s a great actress.

Claire Foy in Prada. This was one of the colors of the night – both Viola Davis and Angela Bassett wore very similar shades of yellow. This is maybe one of the best Dior looks I’ve ever seen, honestly? I love it and she looks incredible. She was great in Women Talking as well.

Someone please tell me Rooney Mara is not set to star in an Audrey Hepburn biopic. Because that would be all wrong.

  2. OzJennifer says:

I really like Elizabeth Debecki’s woodland elf cosplay. And I’m also quite fond of that color too. She looks great.

  3. BQM says:

I loved Rooney’s dress and hated Claire’s. It just looked ill fitting.

  4. KInChicago says:

Just wanted to post that I don’t find Rooney Mara’s appearance severe- I find it refreshing, clean and fresh in contrast to the FrankenKardashianSurgified faces with massive inflated fish lips and tarantula lashes.
And yes, I realize trends shift- even in surgeries. This is a welcome relief.

  5. It Really Is You, Not Me says:

I like Elizabeth Debicki’s dress, pea soup is a tough color to do well but I think it looks very luxe in that velvet fabric.

  6. Kate says:

I love Rooney’s dress, but she’s so boring.

Jessie Buckley….yikes. She always looks terrible on the red carpet.

  7. girl_ninja says:

Rooney looks like Rooney. Elizabeth Debicki looks fabulous in that fit and color.

  8. EBS says:

I am bummed that none of the women from Women Talking were nominated for acting Oscars.

    • Well Wisher says:

Sarah Polley brings out the best in her cast and Mariam Toews writing.

I have slacken off watching films and am reading a lot more. But this is a must see.

I love Rooney style and acting.

Elizabeth Debicki is superb and stunning.

  9. HeyKay says:

Rooney M. always has a sad look about her to me.
    Melancholy eyes, maybe?
Side part in hairstyle on her would be a change.
    Like the dress.

    • Anners says:

Agreed. I went through some of the photos today and Zendaya and Jenna Ortega also weren’t smiling, yet didn’t come across as sad or frightened. Rooney just always seems distressed. Possibly just her resting expression.

  10. Kaye says:

I’ve come to the conclusion that Rooney Mara’s face would crack if she had to smile.

  11. Christine says:

Rooney always seems 2 seconds away from haunting your Victorian era style home.

I love Jessie Buckley but this dress is not it. Maybe it she was styled a bit better that would help? It looks like someone wrapped her in foil and called it a day.

  12. Kirsten says:

I love Rooney and Elizabeth — those dresses are gorgeous.

  13. ama1977 says:

Giving Rooney the benefit of the doubt and positing that maybe she reserves joy/softness for her private life? Maybe she’s decided she doesn’t owe us “pretty.” Or maybe she really likes this look! I do like the dress. I would love to see it/her with a little more “done up” styling. And a hint of happiness, but she doesn’t care what I want. 😂

Claire Foy is gorgeous and The Crown really did QEII the biggest favor casting her. She is so beautiful and I hate that yellow but I love it on her.

Elizabeth Debicki also looks beautiful, to no surprise!

Rooney’s dress is fantastic. She just doesn’t have the charisma to pull it off. Imagine someone like Cate Blanchette wearing it – it would be a real hit. I like Clare Roy’s look but the dress is only a small part of that.
