Jessica Chastain wore Gucci at the Oscars and was the only celebrity in a mask

Jessica Chastain was the only face I saw at the Oscars wearing a mask. She removed it for the red carpet and when she presented with Halle Berry of course, but it was nice to see someone wearing a mask last night. A bunch of celebrities caught covid at the Golden Globes and that was quickly forgotten in the sweep of the awards season. This metallic and black dress is also forgettable but it’s lovely and a perfectly acceptable Oscars gown, it just doesn’t stand out. That’s likely what she was going for as a presenter.

Jessica’s co-presenter Halle Berry was in Ralph & Russo, in a white gown accented by gold roses. I love this, especially the draped skirt! I also am so happy that she’s still with Van Hunt. He was her Oscars date.

Look at this move. DRAMA

Salma Hayek absolutely worked this fabulous glittering red Gucci. OMG that’s Valentina her daughter! She’s 15 years old holy crap.

Bonus Pedro Pascal and his sister, Javiera. She’s wearing Crocs, just like Questlove. Respect.

During Elizabeth Banks’s presentation, with a tall guy in a bear suit, she sounded like she was just getting over a cold. Did they do covid testing before the Oscars this year? I doubt it. Cocaine Bear was so funny and well worth the ticket price, but her bit fell flat.

Elizabeth was in Vivienne Westwood. I get the impression that this is more of a mess than we would have seen from the late great designer herself, you know?

Salma looks fabulous in the red Gucci. One of the few times Iā€™ve actually seen Gucci work for her. Given who her husband is Iā€™m always surprised what awful stuff the dress her in- itā€™s like canā€™t you knock up a nice bespoke dress that fits AND suits your bosses wife? For once sheā€™s on the best dressed list- and for me sheā€™s rivalling Angela for THE Best dresssed tonight

Valentina is the spitting image of her father.

Salma looked incredible (as did AB)

    • Seraphina says:

I love reading everyone’s fashion commentary. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, because I thought this was a huge thumbs down. She looked Vegas-esque and the top looked strange on her. It was a no from me.

Go Jessica! I bet a big contributing factor is that sheā€™s just opened A Dollā€™s House on Broadway for a limited engagement. Iā€™m sure she doesnā€™t want to miss out on 1/8 of the showā€™s run just because she went to the Oscarā€™s

    • SunnyDays says:

Since I’m often the only person wearing a mask anywhere I go, I loved seeing her in one. I also read it’s likely because of her current Broadway run as well so I am not sure if she’s be wearing one otherwise but it’s still nice to see some sanity somewhere.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ Sunny Days, we are in the minority. I wear a mask wherever I go and will keep doing so until I feel it is safe. People are still dying from the coronavirus and it simply isnā€™t safe NOT to wear one. Thatā€™s all I got.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Yes, good for her! It seems like it’s asking too much to expect people to show common courtesy to those around them during a pandemic.

  3. Seraphina says:

Halle’s dress did not help accentuate her beautiful curves – it made her look boxy around her waist. I did not like Salma’s dress either. There were so many other jaw dropping dresses.

  4. Emmi says:

I often hate what Salma is wearing but holy shit, that dress is stunning.

I just love Jessica Chastain. I didn’t get the hype around her in the beginning, tbh. But whenever she gives interviews, I like her a little more. She just seems so intelligent and like she was raised to be a good human. The dress is nice, nothing super spectacular.

Halle always looks fabulous, I barely notice the dress.

    • BothSidesNow says:

Salma does look stunning in her dress!!! I actually like Jessica Chastains dress as well. As for Halle, she could wear a paper bag and still look fabulous!! I thought that all three women looked gorgeous and executed their looks perfectly!!!

I like Halle Berry’s dress. Salma is a no for me, I don’t like this metallic fringey dress trend that is so popular now. It reminds me of Christmas tinsel. That black and white thing on Elizabeth is a no.

  6. Fineskylark says:

I read elsewhere that Glenn Close had to drop out of presenting because she tested positive, so I think there was testing this year.

  7. Chaine says:

This post was spoiled for me by scary waxy toothy puppet face Keith Urban

I am setting here with a mild case of Covid, fully vaccinated, first Covid timer. If this is what mild feels like I would have wore ten masks to the Oscars. Love you Jessica.
Jessica’s dress was normal for her. She played it safe. I don’t blame her. I
I really didn’t like Halle’s dress. I didn’t like her hair. Her body is stunning so go for it girl showing off those beautiful curves. She is always stunning.
I did not like Salma’s dress at all. She has been wearing this style for awhile lately too. It reminds me of a Western Saloon.
I sound like Elizabeth Banks right now. We could be twinsies. Loved she wore her comforter to the Oscar’s. I would have too if I was Covid negative.

    • Lucy2 says:

Iā€™m pretty sure I had Covid a few weeks ago, and I sounded just like Elizabeth, Banks, too. I have two friends who are currently sick with it right now also. Too many people are acting like itā€™s not a thing anymore and it really is. Good on Jessica for wearing a mask.

  9. Kate says:

Jessica Chastain always looks the same. Boring.

    Salma looks fabulous.

  10. TIFFANY says:

Jessica has been masked up the entire award season. There was even a time she had a mask with the same design as her gown. She ain’t looking to get her babies sick and I don’t blame her.

  11. Jen says:

I think this was a personal best for Salma. Great colour in sequins, but most importantly, it fit her.

  12. laurie says:

    Props to Jessica!
On another note, why are Pedroā€™s pants always too long? šŸ¤«ā˜¹ļø

  13. Mel says:

They did do Covid testing before the show, that’s why Glenn Close wasn’t in the audience, she has Covid. The weather has been so strangely warm that all of my spring allergies have arrived early. She might be having the same problem or maybe she just has a cold. Who knows.

  14. Sue says:

How is Salma’s daughter already 15, wow! And Pedro Pascal. Good lord, that man is charming.

  15. ME says:

Good for Jessica for wearing a mask and being responsible. I am guessing she’s currently filming and doesn’t want to bring Covid back on set? But then again, most of the celebs in the audience are probably in the middle of filming something, but guess they think the pandemic is over. I am shocked at how Rihanna during both her pregnancies has been so out and about. Pregnant women are at much greater risk for Covid complications. She’s been lucky so far but I’m just surprised she’s walking around bare faced everywhere.

I have to say I am surprised when someone says that showing up looking as Jessica Chastain does like a gorgeous real-life Jessica Rabbit is boring or not enough. JC consistingly is lovely , well-dressed, with perfect makeup and hair. She has a style much like Michelle Williams with the exception that JC chooses what accentuates her body type and it works (not twee). It is not boring. It simply does not stand out in a sea of crystals. It was not her job to stand out last night, It was her job to present an award. She did her job. She looked great doing it and wore a mask. I was a little annoyed that someone above suggested it was dull. When in reality showing up in the normal 90th percentile is not enough for women but men can show up looking like Hugh Grant. Sorry rant over.

I would like to address the fact that lately, an increasing number of famous women or women adjacent to celebrities, have dared send the message that high heels are a pain, that they’re not physiologically designed to accommodate the nature of the foot, and particularly disregard the pressure of the body weight on the feet.

I am saying this because last week, I found myself going through all my pairs of shoes, and selecting the ones I will consciously never wear again for my health’s sake:
    – stilettos + heels higher than 2.3 inches,
    – unsupportive soles,
    – extra flat soles overlooking the foot arch

Being a stickler for esthetics and refined looks has made me disregard for too long the anatomical needs of my those two body parts that carried me everywhere while suffering a silent agony. That’s why I want to advocate for the women who silently convey the message that their feet can no longer take being showcased as fashion accessories.

Doing so, I was praised at work or by random people in the street for my edgy style, but would come back home miserable, with sore, swollen, burning feet, and atrocious back aches, just to realize my stunningly feminine heels had been taking a toll on my blood pressure.

Ladies, I am so utterly done with high heels as the embodiment of the no pain no gain mantra. I decided last week that self-inflicted violence on my feet was over. I am now in the process of purchasing footwear that are colorful, with flower patterns and moderate heels. The Femme Fatale myth needs to be revisited in a manner that blends elegance and concern female ergonomics.

    • Vernie says:

Cheers to all of this! I’m glad to be at the age (mid-40s) where I’ve decided my comfort level is just as important as being stylish when choosing clothes and shoes. That wasn’t previously the case.

  17. KC says:

Just came here to say I originally thought Halle was Toni Braxton and was wondering if she usually attends. I didnā€™t realize until today how similar they look and they are BOTH some gorgeous sistas, but also, I guess Halleā€™s finally showing some signs of ageing?šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø She still looks FABULOUS but Iā€™ve never not been able to recognize her before. Of course, maybe itā€™s just my eyes showing signs of ageing!šŸ˜†

  18. Grant says:

Jessica is my favorite out of these looks. She is just stunning. The gown is gorgeous and perfect for a presenter. I love her Veronica Lake hair.

Hate Salmaā€™s dress. The color is beautiful but the midsection looks like sheā€™s uncomfortably squeezed in there.

I like Halleā€™s look. Itā€™s creative and dramatic and not what one typically sees at the Oscars.

  19. Lucy2 says:

I like Jessicaā€™s gown, not too flashy, but perfect for a presenter. Halle looks amazing, I just wish her dress wasnā€™t so open in the skirt.
I love the skirt of Salmaā€™s, but I donā€™t think the design of the top is super flattering for someone as genetically blessed as she is.
