Brett Goldstein is ‘the only person in L.A. in the last 15 years who has body hair’

Brett Goldstein is a 42-year-old “overnight sensation.” Not really – he had been working steadily and toiling in British television and the comedy scene for decades before his world was flipped upside down with Ted Lasso. Goldstein was originally hired as one of the writers for the show, then he auditioned for Roy Kent and that was that. What’s great is that Goldstein isn’t whining about how successful he is now or anything like that – he’s used his newfound fame to strike while the iron is hot. He co-created Shrinking (also on AppleTV), he’s writing other projects and scripts and he’s doing a huge comedy show in Seattle. Goldstein covers the latest issue of Variety and he talks a lot about his life, all of his projects and how he’s not really Roy Kent (he is). Some highlights:

On his ‘sex symbol’ status: “How do I feel about becoming a sex symbol? I don’t know. You can say, ‘He blushes, looks confused, his head explodes.’”

The only hairy man in LA: “Yeah, [people like] the grumpy guy. Maybe it’s hairy men. I seem to be the only person in L.A. in the last 15 years who has body hair. Maybe that’s a thing. Like, ‘Whoa, what’s this? This is new!’”

He loves Roy Kent’s rage: “I really love playing Roy Kent. People always say, ‘You don’t seem angry in real life.’ And I’m always like, ‘But I’m f–king angry.’ And maybe there is a part of me that gets to process it through Roy.”

His early drama auditions: For years he pursued dramatic gigs, but “all I would ever get audition offers for was terrorists. I guess they see my headshot and go, ‘Well, he looks like a terrorist!’”

He’s training for a marathon right now: “I always feel like I’m making up for lost time that I didn’t enjoy as a youth. Because I was a very miserable kid. I was so miserable as a young person that now I enjoy things more. ‘Oh yeah, we should do fun stuff!’ I was a 6-year-old who sighed a lot. I was born this way. I had a dark way.”

He’s obsessed with Twin Peaks: “Here’s a secret about me that I don’t that I’ve told anyone. Here you go, here’s the scoop: People ask, ‘What do you do to relax?’ What always makes me happy is looking up ‘Twin Peaks’ fan theories. I love reading about ‘Twin Peaks.’ I love thinking about ‘Twin Peaks.’ It exists in my head now and forever.” (His thoughts on the recent revival? “Magnificent. Five stars. Incredible. How did it happen?”)

He wants more Ted Lasso: “I really do get that it’s a hard decision. Because it’s this wonderful thing, and these three seasons feel really perfect. Do you gamble? Do you leave the table? Or do you keep going because you have more?” What Goldstein does object to is the idea that “Ted Lasso” should end before it turns to sh-t. “I’m like, ‘No, it wouldn’t get sh-t. Because it’s a really good f–king group of people who care about it. Jason’s a f–king genius. No way we’d make something sh-t. Because why would we suddenly be sh-t? Like, ‘oh maybe it would go downhill.’ Why? Have we suddenly all gotten sh-t at our jobs?”

When I found out he does a podcast, I listened to a few episodes only to discover that he doesn’t talk like Roy Kent in real life and he’s also just kind of dorky. I say that in a nice way – he’s a film geek, a comedy geek and very chatty. He’s not the strong silent type in real life. That’s what this interview reminded me of – oh right, he loves reading Twin Peaks fan theories and he’s obsessed with the Muppets.

Well he is terribly charming! As the only person on the planet not watching Ted Lasso, I had no idea. Also, as a fellow miserable kid, sir, I feel you!

  2. FancyPants says:

    HOT. That is all.

  3. Becks1 says:

Haha I love the twin peaks bit. I would say the weird thing that relaxes me is reading horror movie synopses on wikipedia. I can’t watch the movies, they scare me too much, but I find the plots intriguing so I read them on Wiki, lolol.

I love Roy Kent. He’s this angry grumpy man who is also just a GOOD guy, a stand up guy. the scene where he hugs Jamie Tartt after his dad is an ahole at a game was one of the best moments in the series IMO.

I love Roy too! My fave Roy moment is when he tells Rebecca that the guy she was dating was “just fine”. That whole moment was perfect. And basically every scene with Pheobe

Add me in the “I 💗 Roy Kent” club, too. He is PERFECT. I loved the scenes of him running through the streets of London, only stopping to wrench his injured knee back into place. I loved his exchange this season with the tunnel attendant at Chelsea (before he expressed his condolences over the breakup!) I love his use of profanity, his glare-and-growl, and I LOVE that he is a marshmallow inside but a cactus on the outside.

So far my favorite moment was him sitting on the park bench, casually eating his breakfast while Jamie did burpees until he spewed. Right behind him batting the meatball out of Jamie’s hand at the restaurant, apologizing to the waitress, and snarling at Jamie to “clean that up!” 😂

      • Dara says:

        “Avenge me, Keely.”

    • SIde Eye says:

Agreed @Becks1oh the scene where he hugged Jamie Tartt brought on the waterworks. I love when he tells his niece’s soccer team to enjoy their trophies that they won for nothing. I love Roy Kent!

      • QuiteContrary says:

I just laughed again, Side Eye!! That whole scene was so great.

Roy Kent is just such a great character is a show packed with great characters.

      • SIde Eye says:

I agree @QuiteContrary! I love the show and Roy is my fave!

Yes to more Ted Lasso! Also, thanks for the heads up about his podcast as I had never heard of it before. I learn so much from this website!

  5. Abby says:

I love him on Ted Lasso, and Shrinking is great. I recently started listening to his podcast and he’s nothing like the Roy Kent character. He is very soft spoken, a good conversationalist, a bit cheesy and really loves movies.

I’d love to see him in a Muppet movie!

    • ama1977 says:

Sorry, serial commenter because I love Ted Lasso and Shrinking, which is also a beautiful, hilarious, heart-wrenching show with a million little amazing moments, lots of surprises, and a fantastic ensemble cast. Watch it if you aren’t!!

Now I am imagining Brett and Jason Segal geeking out on the Shrinking set over their shared love of the Muppets while Harrison Ford rolls his eyes at them. The thought amuses me greatly. 😂

  6. FHMom says:

Ted Lasso is lightning in a bottle. I’m going to hate to see it end, but I’ve loved too many shows that have turned to sh** by time they pull the plug. As much as I’ll miss it, I would rather it end on a high note. And , please, Keeley and Roy need to get back together.

  7. Mia4s says:

There’s a pretty clear correlation between actors who toil away and see success late, and handle that success with charm and grace (George Clooney set the bar, see also Pedro Pascal). This is yet another example.

The voice freaked me out the first time I saw him interviewed! You’d think I didn’t know what acting was 😂. If you really want your head messed with listen to him and Phil Dunster who plays Jamie interviewed together. That is some impressive vocal and accent work gentlemen!

    • ama1977 says:

Okay, acknowledging that I have a problem and sorry for yet another comment. 😂

There is a picture of Brett Goldstein and Phil Dunster from the Emmys or Golden Globes or some other awards show red carpet like a year or two ago, and they are in their beautifully tailored evening wear, and OMG. Like FIRE. My 70-something mom sent it to me via text with the flame emoji. Sooooooo hot.

      That’s all! I love them.

  8. Lucía says:

    Hot AND delightful? Check!

  9. Sass says:

Oh no, I didn’t recognize him at first because he was smiling 🤣

  10. sunny says:

I enjoy him. He is very talented, especially as a writer and seems sweet. Love to see actors who get a bit of success later, tends to result in having good perspective.

  11. Jess says:

The older I get, the more I like body hair on my men. I remember years ago watching some classic 60s or 70s moving starring Elliot Gould (back when he was a sex symbol and not just Monica’s dad) and I was shocked by how much body hair he had! The 70s were hairy! But I like it and want it to come back!

  12. Katie says:

If anyone is a love island fan, search lone island and watch brett Goldstein (in lockdown madness) do a parody of it where he falls in love with a plant.

  13. ABB says:

I’ve had SUCH a crush on this man since I heard his podcast. I think he’s partnered up but, Brett you darling nerd if you’re not I’ll talk film writing over a bottle of Chablis any time!

  14. teecee says:

There are a lot of rumors about this man so don’t get too attached.

  15. Emmy Rae says:

I clicked for the body hair comment and the rest was great too. Always nice to read a cheerful interview of a guy who’s just happy to be here and confident that he is good at his job.

  16. Stephanie says:

This is a tiny rant, but as an LA native, it always bothers me when people (especially people not from here) make generalizations about LA when what they’re really talking about is an insular community in “Hollywood”, which itself is a hologram built on top of a city with actual working people in it. You have blinders on if you see the city this way, like now I’m gonna drive around looking at the homeless tents along the sidewalks hearing this guy say “nObodY Has bOdY hAir, haha!”

Anyway, aside from my native Angeleno defenses being triggered, he seems like an otherwise charming dude. And I’m into the Twin Peaks dweebery.

  17. Ej says:

I don’t watch Ted Lasso, but I happened to listen to Brett’s interview on NPR while cooking and I just found him delightful! He speaks as if he has a constant smile on his face, just really happy and bubbly. So imagine my surprise when I went on YouTube to watch his Roy Kent character, whoa! I never would have thought he sounded the way he does in real life!

  18. Margot says:

    Such a crush!
