Brad Pitt & Global Green still haven’t paid the $20 million settlement to MIR residents

More than a year after Hurricane Katrina decimated the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Brad Pitt co-founded an organization called Make It Right NOLA. The idea was that he would bring in cutting-edge environmentally-friendly architects and green technology to make new affordable home in New Orleans, and people could get mortgages on those homes. It took years, but MIR NOLA made dozens of homes. People got mortgages and moved into those homes. Then the problems began: toxic mold, shoddy construction, leaks, shoddy material, inhabitable conditions. The MIR homeowners got a lawyer and started a years-long effort to sue Brad Pitt and MIR. Pitt spent years pretending that he had nothing to do with any of it, even though he literally spent years taking credit and all of the glory for the scheme.

Last year, as it appeared that the MIR homeowners would likely be able to finally hold Pitt accountable, a settlement was reached. It was extremely strange at the time – Pitt partnered with Global Green and (it was said) that Global Green was putting up $20.5 million to settle with MIR homeowners. The judge signed off on it and then… things quickly fell apart. Global Green was supposed to do an auction with Pitt soon after the settlement, but it got canceled. There was no evidence that Global Green actually paid the $20.5 million. Now the Hollywood Reporter reports that it was all one big scam, pulled by Global Green chasing for celebrity clout and Brad Pitt trying to escape responsibility for his f–kups. Global Green never had the money.

For the impacted homeowners of New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, the August 2022 announcement that they were one step closer to being made whole — with relief coming in the form of a $20.5 million settlement — was long past due. In the summer of 2022, Global Green USA — another charity with Hollywood connections and a track record of helping rebuild in the region — had announced it would step up to pay and administer the $20.5 million, imminently disbursing the funds. “Hopefully this agreement will allow everyone to look ahead to other opportunities to continue to strengthen this proud community in the future,” Pitt told TMZ, as media outlets spread the welcome news.

But The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the deal has since imploded amid recrimination. History has repeated in the Lower Ninth Ward — and yet another well-intentioned and highly publicized plan for these residents has resulted in failure.

According to previously unreported case files, soon after the pact was announced, Global Green attempted to renege, revealing that despite signing on to the court-approved agreement that stipulated all funding would be provided within 10 days, it never had the money to cover its commitment. Furthermore, the nonprofit, which wasn’t required to show the court it was financially sound, asserted it could not effectively fundraise because Pitt’s ex-wife Angelina Jolie had, in unrelated court proceedings, then recently accused the actor of abusing her and their children.

“I’ve never seen a situation like this, where there was a settlement that fell through because it was an insolvent party that proposed it,” marvels Louisiana State University law professor William R. Corbett, an expert in civil procedure.

Pitt’s team rejects any notion that the actor or his reputation are at all to blame for what’s transpired, contending that Global Green is solely responsible for making a promise it didn’t keep. “Brad had supported Global Green many years ago, so when they approached his team stating ‘$20.5M in funding’ had been secured by their ‘generous donors,’ there was interest in considering their proposal,” a Pitt spokesperson at Hiltzik Strategies responded to THR in a written statement. “Global Green represented themselves as having already obtained these funds and planned to use them toward resolving all claims in the ongoing lawsuit for the benefit of the homeowners.”

The representative added, “It was incredibly surprising for the plaintiffs, the defendants and their counsel to learn that the funds Global Green claimed multiple times were secured had not in fact been committed or raised. It was equally disappointing to discover payment was not made, though the settlement agreement was specifically negotiated to ensure that litigation would continue without prejudice to any parties if the settlement were to fail.”

For his part, Global Green CEO Bill Bridge, who agreed to reply to THR‘s inquiries by email, portrayed his nonprofit as a pure-of-heart entity having been brought into “the snake pit” by a high-stakes, even higher-pressure settlement process that’s left it with mounting legal fees, under a contempt order and scrambling to obtain a court-ordered surety bond to cover the $20.5 million. (A surety is a guarantee of one party’s debt by another.) “Global Green was willing to make every effort to raise the funds, but when it wasn’t fast enough or to the level those parties required, Global Green became the scapegoat for what essentially has been the failure of the parties to resolve the matter,” he explained.

[From THR]

This is just a portion of what THR uncovered – you should absolutely read the full piece if you’re interested in a lot of back-and-forth documentation from lawyers. It sounds like two things were happening at once: Pitt and his team manipulated Global Green into signing all of the documentation to “cover” the $20.5 million settlement cost AND it sounds like Global Green is extremely shady and they consistently overpromise and clout-chase. What I still don’t get – what I’ve never understood – is that Pitt HAS the money. He spends tens of millions on weird f–king design projects in France, he’s sold off his estate in LA, he has sponsorships and side-deals. He has the money, and he needs to pay the people he screwed over in New Orleans. This is obscene.

Oh, and Global Green is leaning in HEAVILY to the narrative that Pitt got them on the hook for the $20.5 million before the FBI report came out last summer – you know, the FBI report on Brad Pitt’s abusive rampage on a private plane in 2016, which left his wife battered and bruised and his children traumatized.

20 years! these people have been without safe homes for 20 years – and Brad Pitt was happy to take the credit for early success in the beginning, but instead of stepping in once there were problems and either personally fundraising (I’m sure if he did the work, shook hands, he could raise/donate himself the $20M), he just avoided it and blamed other people.

Not to MENTION! when this came out originally, it was pitched as them getting free homes, but like it was all on poorly organized loans that the article shows Brad’s org never really researched properly – so people trusted him (bc truly he was the face of this and he milked that), and then he dropped them.

    • Tacky says:

I worked at a nonprofit at the time of Katrina and I remember us all rolling our eyes at what a dilettante Pitt was how deeply he was in over his head.

  2. ML says:

Holy crow, those poor people! Blaming Global Green is justified by the fact that they were supposed to be able to help, BUT Brad Pitt has been supposed to help for decades! A Bush dude was president back when BP first helped these poor people into a further hell. Their homes are trash, they can’t sell them, they have health problems and no way out. Serious question: can they sue BP himself? As stated, BP does have the money. This a-hole could literally get tons of positive press just by finally paying these people so they could move into real houses, but he hasn’t done so. What a trashy, abusive, narcissistic pos!

    • Freya says:

If he solves the problem, he assumes that he was really wrong in this story and he doesn’t want that, because he always blames others for his mistakes.

      • Alycea says:

This is it right. He has an terrible accountability problem. It was right on display when he was in Finland talking about the people he “may” have hurt in his past. MAY! Ridiculous

  3. Jasper says:

This is just so enraging. They’ve been though so much and to STILL not get any justice…? What needs to be done before right can be done by the people of the Lower 9th?

  4. HeyKay says:

    Brad Pitt has no shame.
He easily could write a check, get it over with, move on.

When I think of how Paul Newman started Newman’s Own and the Hole in the Wall Gang charities, and how low key he was about it. Paul Newman was a good person in his charity work.
Robert Redford has done much also. Danny Thomas started St. Judes.
Keanu gives to charities and does it all on the quiet.

Then we have Pitt. No class. You’d think he’d pay up and then spend a year patting himself on the back. But he can’t even do that.

  5. Mslove says:

Brad Pitt needs to be publicly shamed for this. We can’t have celebrities taking advantage of people and ruining their lives for publicity. It’s unconscionable. Brad Pitt is a scoundrel.

  6. Coco says:

If I remember correctly Global Green was supposed to cover their 20. 5 million New Orleans bill in exchange for Pitt auctioning himself off at a glitzy fundraiser/dinner in Beverly Hills. Which means Global Green expected to get back the money they put out.

So I guess when the news broke about Pitts, being abusive and the details came out they dropped him from the fundraiser and figured they were off the hook for the 20.5 million? Again Pitt screwed over the people in the Lower 9th and they pay for his shady business dealings.

Let’s be real Pitt paid for his many “design projects” in France by embezzling money from the wine business. Not to mention dude it’s up to his ass in debt.

    • Shiba says:

      💯
BP does not have 20.5 mill that he can afford to fork over.
He is performer rich – not rich rich.
      Or ethical rich, clearly.

  7. A says:

If anyone hasn’t already, they should watch the documentary made by Spike Lee, When The Levee Breaks. There are four parts to it. It’s a devastating documentary to watch, and it covers the aftermath of the hurricane and how genuinely awful it was.

These people lost everything. It’s not just losing a house, a physical structure. Their entire lives were destroyed. And then to get lied to and scammed for 20 years after the fact?! And that too by a self-serving celebrity trying to cosplay as a good person? How much more do these people need to suffer? This is just disgraceful.

    • Turtledove says:

      A-

I haven’t seen the documentary but I was thinking about to your point, how this isn’t just about people buying shoddy houses and being screwed which would be bad enough on it’s own. These are people who lost everything, homes, jobs, possessions.. And then had a really hard road to get BACK, and when they did, they ended up with houses that are unsafe, making them sick. They can’t SELL them and have all their money tied up in them.

Brad Pitt is worth hundreds of millions. He could make all those people whole with 20 million, he could get that $ back with a single movie. It’s really disgusting. I wish every media outlet would shout this from the rooftops daily until he actually “makes it right”.

    • kirk says:

Thank you for Spike Lee ‘When the Levee Breaks’ documentary recommendation. Will look it up for sure. Glad this story is in The Hollywood Reporter; not sure if that’s enough public shaming to get Brad Pitt to do the right thing, but it’s a step in the right direction since it’s media in field tied to his bankability. Cough it up Brad!

  8. Ivy says:

So that’s why his PR has been on overdrive!!! This is awful for the victims. I can’t believe everyone is just trying to wipe their hands from the mess they have contributed to. How is it no one thought to make sure Global Green cover the cost? They sound just as shady as Brad has been with this situation.

I am ecstatic to read the judge recently allowed the class action suit to contuine.

  9. Lizzie Bathory says:

This is so, so weird. The full THR piece says that in 2020 & 2021, the charity’s finances weren’t independently audited, which is sketchy. And apparently their fundraising has been declining for years, so how or why did they promise to pay a $20.5 million settlement?

Brad Pitt is up to his ears in legal & financial problems.

    • yep says:

MIRs taxes are also sketchy as hell. Their last taxes filed they said they had $40 million in the bank. No homes were fixed and no more were built. Yet suddenly MIR is broke.

Brad needs to be audited. He’s a scammer who was also previously sued for not paying bills for contracted work, used the excuse that it was him doing the work personally, then when the court reprimanded him, he blamed it on an error for the payment not going through. So what did Brad and his colleagues do with $40 million in grants and donations that were raised??

      • Ivy says:

40 million? Isn’t that how much he bought his cliff house for and how much he tried to sell his old house? That’s a coincidence that needs to be looked into

  10. Freya says:

And once again, Pitt and his PR manage to blame Angelina for the shit this guy does. Angelina is not to blame if Pitt, through HIS fault, started a lawsuit against her and brought the FBI reports to light. If he had just let her go and bought her share, no one would have known what actually happened on that plane. But it was good to know so we get a sense of how bad this man is as a person and it sucks as an “activist” too.

    • Turtledove says:

“Angelina is not to blame if Pitt, through HIS fault, started a lawsuit against her and brought the FBI reports to light. ”

Exactly, see also “Angelina is not to blame if Pitt, through HIS fault, decided to abuse his wife and children”

  11. Luna says:

Imagine how it must have been for these residents of New Orleans to have seen, in recent days, several articles about Pitt’s “generosity” in letting a 105-year-old man (his rich neighbor) live in his house “free of charge”, while they are living in rotten houses.

    • Coco says:

Don’t forget the Property Brothers celebrity charity show that Pitt was on where he had them build a home for his hair stylist or something. They had to watch that BS while their homes were, condemned for mold and poor quality.

  12. Well Well says:

When Brad was being sued for this and the judge denied his request to be removed from the lawsuit, there was virtually no mainstream media coverage, especially from entertainment media. Now that Global Green is held responsible for paying it’s suddenly ok to expose what’s going on, and, wait for it, Angelina is essentially being blamed for the release of the FBI report and painting Brad in a bad light. It’s so typical of Pitt and his PR team. He’s the down to earth nice guy that’s always involved in shady situations, but It’s always someone else’s fault.

  13. Sunday says:

Brad Pitt is such a piece of shit. This is so infuriating, and them attempting to blame Angelina because she *checks notes* had the traumatic experience of being assaulted along with her children by Brad makes it that much more disgusting.

  14. Bree says:

He is so shady. He’s been moving money around for years (including Angelina’s as he also held profits away from her). Criminal. The lawsuits keep getting delayed and he’s been on a buy/sell spree in the meantime.

  15. Facts says:

And his dumb lawyers didn’t bother to chk because they were too busy trying to deflect from his abuse allegations. Which means u are guilty. And to think his silly lawyers want to go to court and let Angie’s lawyers expose him even worse. Cause baby I bet u it’s worse than we know. All of the embezzlement and illegal tatics. Stoli is suing him for 259 million so his jealous PR yesterday about him being worth 400 million is in jeopardy.

    • Coco says:

I don’t believe he is worth 400 million I think that is just a PR spin to defect/discredit any story about embezzlement chargers because “why would someone worth so much embezzle money”.

He is so pathetic and I wonder if another story, lawsuit, or information about Stoli is about to come out.

    • Coco says:

Also, Pitt seems to be looking for buyers for his art collection. Pitt selling off all of his big assets speaks to money problems. Another reason to put out a BS story about how much he is worth is to deflect the media attention from his finances.

  16. HeyKay says:

Is Brad Pitt broke? Money problems? WTH?
How can he be short of money? This tool has been making millions for years.

    • Coco says:

This is the same man that spent $40 million on re-doings a pool in France. From the court documents about 3 years ago showed his finances were a mess , he just not good with money.

  17. portia says:

The people that bought those houses have more class in their pinkies then Brad will ever have in his whole life. They should be complaining more, but have too much class. He should pay the $20.5 mill himself, liability be d**ned. He is trash. And $150,000 for a mortgage is a lot of money for working people.
