What was behind King Charles’s vintage selection of Father’s Day photos?

Sunday was Father’s Day in America and the UK. Prince William made a point of releasing his new Father’s Day portraits on Saturday, in time for them to make all of the Sunday newspapers’ front pages. King Charles’s office waited until Sunday to post their Father’s Day photos, and they didn’t include any new shots of Charles and his sons and grandchildren, probably because those photos don’t exist, because Charles is a dogsh-t father and a dogsh-t grandfather. So in lieu of new photos, the palace posted some curiously chosen vintage photos – one of Charles and his late father, one of Camilla and her late father, and one of Charles with his two sons when they were much younger.

The photo of William, Harry and Charles is from the summer of 1997. The summer Princess Diana died, while Harry and William were in Balmoral with their dad. William would have been 15, Harry was 12. It’s a curious and evocative choice, to post something from the summer where your two sons’ lives turned upside down. It also comes across as vaguely menacing, but I’m still paranoid about that sh-t that went down with the Sussexes in New York last month. Of course, the royal commentators have a completely different take on why that photo was chosen:

King Charles has offered an olive branch to Prince Harry by posting a photo with both his sons in a Father’s Day tribute. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams has claimed the photo aims to ‘evoke bittersweet memories’ and is the King’s way of ‘sending a sensitive message’ to Harry about loyalty. Charles is also ‘reminding’ William how ‘very different’ the relationship between the brothers once was and that they all used to share ‘precious family moments’, commentators say.

Mr Fitzwilliams says the Balmoral photo depicts happier times between the King and his sons and was meant to send Harry a message. He claims the photo appeared to show Harry making a discovery that both Charles and William were ‘intrigued by.’ He claimed the snapshot captured an ‘enchanting and innocent moment’ shared by the trio on the countryside estate.

‘King Charles is surely sending a sensitive message to his wayward son about what really matters and where his real loyalties should lie,’ Mr Fitzwilliams said of the post. ‘He is also reminding William on this very special day of how very different things once were between him and Harry. They too, once shared precious family moments! Could they again?’

[From The Daily Mail]

Yeah… choices were made, but I don’t believe that Charles was sending an olive branch to Harry by posting a photo from the summer of Diana’s death, the formative moment of Harry’s childhood and adulthood. There are plenty of photos of Charles with his sons from completely different eras too… it just occurred to me that Charles wants to erase Diana so thoroughly, he can’t even post a photo including Diana for Father’s Day. Literally, he won’t acknowledge the mother of his two sons. Not only is Charles beefing with his mixed-race grandson (a literal child), Charles is beefing with the memory of a woman who died over 25 years ago.

It’s meant to send a message about “loyalty?” That is menacing as hell. Good grief! On a side note – I am literally desperate for a photo of Harry with Archie and Lilibet! I know I’m part of the problem, but I so want to see new photos of those sweet kids!

    • Jais says:

Right? A message about where his real loyalties should lie? Pretty sure that’s with Meghan and his kids and not with the man who cut off his security during a global pandemic and leaked his whereabouts. And a photo reminder from august 1997 is not it.

      • Mary Pester says:

@Jais, rhetorical question, according to the British press and their reporters, just how many olive trees have been sacrificed by Charles 😂😂😂good god they can’t even come up with an original lie anymore

    • Amy Bee says:

There are plenty of photos of Harry, Archie and Lili in the Netflix docuseries.

      • Ash says:

Old photos, the last “new” photo they have of Prince Archie is his christening photo at 4 months old 4 years ago and Princess Lilibet a photo from her first birthday one year ago.

      • Bee says:

        Oh well!

        They don’t owe us nothing.

This is part of that privacy thing everyone is always on about.

    • MSTJ says:

I might be in the minority but I’m glad the Sussexes are not circulating photos of their children. I think it is good to draw a line and separate their private lives from the public as they see fit.

      • lanne says:

I’m with you. There’s a price on these kids heads, and saying that Harry’s loyalties should lie with the family that rejected him and not with the family he created is textbook toxicity. I hope people in the UK call that out. The ratchets are openly erasing Harry’s wife and his children and saying they don’t matter. That is dispicable.

      • Steph says:

@mtsj, I agree. I think they are handling the children’s privacy very well. I also agree with @sarahlee in that I want to see the kids (not that my wants trump anything though).

      • Lauren says:

I’m hoping for a photo of the kids, and parents, in Invictus Games gear as part of the lead up marketing to the Games this year. Prince Harry has talked about the Invictus Games being like a family and based on some of the photos from the last Games competitors do bring their entire family including young kids.

    • Ash says:

Yes, they want him to abandon his family and run back to his abusive relatives on that island. His loyalty should be to his abusers and not the family he’s created with his Black wife.

  2. ThatsNotOkay says:

It was when Charles was his happiest (because Diana was gone for good). Not the boys. Classless, tasteless, quintessential King Charlesian.

    • Cara says:

I’m pretty sure this photo was taken prior to Diana’s death. I certainly do not defend Charles or palace choices, but this is a sweet photo of simpler times. Perhaps after Camilla inevitably dies first we will start to see Diana photos?? We will certainly see Diana photos if William becomes king. Maybe then we can erase/exorcise Camilla.

      • Tessa says:

It would not bring good memories to will and harry whose mother died soon after that picture was taken. Imo

      • Christine says:

It was when Chuck had Harry and Willnot, in Scotland, right before Diana died. I don’t need to look at the dates, I was in my early 20s. This is so gross.

  3. Zazzoo says:

What really stands out in that photo for anyone who wasn’t around then was that William was the literal embodiment of the fair haired golden child from day one. I always wondered what life was like behind the scenes for the red haired younger boy, and now we know. Daily reminders of being the spare, followed by speculation over paternity (despite how clearly he takes after the Spencers).

    • Tessa says:

There should have been no speculation about paternity at all. It was something cruel probably targeting Diana. Diana was involved with Hewitt beginning in 1986 when Harry was two years old . Charles was cruel to let those rumors stay. He goes out of his way to protect Camilla and her children but can’t take time to protect his own children. Harry also looks a lot like Charles and Philip.

    • Tiffany says:

Harry is currently walking around with Philip’s face. To question Harry’s paternity is just stupid all around for all involved.

      • Jaded says:

I agree — just as so many people think Andrew is Lord Porchester’s son. He’s absolutely not. Andrew was conceived after Philip got back from a long stint at sea. He was a “homecoming” baby.

      • zazzoo says:

It’s true. As he matured, he really did start to look like Philip (who was devastatingly handsome in his day). But even in his younger years, the resemblance to Charles Spencer was strong. That alone doesn’t prove paternity, but it does make it ridiculous to question paternity on the basis of having a strong resemblance to the mother’s line.

      • Snoodle says:

I absolutely agree. Just slap a wig and one of those enormous hats on Andrews’ head and he could easily be the Queen Mother’s sister.

Taking after your mother’s side of the family doesn’t make your father not your father.

  4. Brassy Rebel says:

I recognized that photo as from August 1997 immediately. And it’s meant to send a message to Harry about where his loyalties should lie? Yikes!

    • Steph says:

I’m glad you said that, I recognized the pic too. I think it’s telling that he doesn’t have anything that isn’t being recycled from the first 35.5 yrs of the boys’ life to post. Did he ever do anything with them that wasn’t a photo op?

  5. Kim says:

Why would Charles post a pic of Diana on Father’s Day 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • Tessa says:

Charles wants Diana airbrushed. And it was not just on Father’s day. He never shows her. There was a birthday tribute he sent out about William, Diana nowhere in sight. He even literally cut her out one of the photos, where they were sitting together with young william in the middle, Diana cropped out

  6. Chuckles doing what he always is doing and that’s being a bad father. There is just no getting around those facts.

    • Whyforthelovel says:

He 100% is being the absolute worst father on earth. He lacks any kind of connection with either of his sons. And he uses pictures like a Mafia Don. You broke with then family Harry. Never mind that Charles never really cared about this kid. Harry is supposed to leave his wife and children and continue begging for scraps. Nope thank you next!

  7. equality says:

So does Charles wear a kilt all the time when he is in Scotland? Or was this just a photo op? The reminder seems more “remember when I could use you as a photo prop and for good PR for myself as the great father”?

  8. HeyKay says:

I saw these photos and didn’t over think them one way or the other.
Knowing Charles he chose the photos with W&H for the fact that he looks younger and more vital in them.

    • ML says:

HeyKay, There’s a long tradition of sending subtle support (or the lack of it) with the RF’s use of photos. Think about who was/not shown when Queen Elizabeth made a speech (the photos on her mantle piece, for instance or desk or table). Of all the pictures available in which a vital Charles appears with one or both of his sons, he picks on close to when their mother was killed?! And then (remember the invisible contract with the RR) there’s an article which doubles down and says that KC is sending a message? Yikes!

    • Chaine says:

@HeyKay, agree with you! If the trooping photos show anything, it is how much Charles has aged in the last year! He looks positively ancient and fragile. With these throwback pix, he is trying to harken back to when he was younger and more VIRILE.

  9. Amy Bee says:

Richard Fitzwilliams is looney tunes. He got all of that nonsense from a picture from the summer Diana died? I think Charles would have liked to post a picture of him with his sons as adults but there aren’t many. I can think of only one and it’s the one of three of them in military uniform. There’s no way he could post that now. I’m sure when Harry looks at that photo all he thinks about is his mother died that summer he was at Balmoral. These royal commentators keep pining for a relationship that never existed and refuse to accept the reality of the situation.

    • ML says:

Amy Bee, you’re correct about RF being a loony toon. However, there’s no way he’d write what he did if C&C weren’t okay with it.

  10. ML says:

Was there no one available to tell KC not to choose a Father’s Day photo from the summer of 1997?!? It really feels like it was chosen on purpose. The creepy message to Harry (who has rather vocally called himself Diana’s son and followed her footsteps) is clear. Yikes! And even for William this doesn’t read as a loving tribute at all. Did Camzilla have a hand in choosing this specific photo or was it all CRex?

    • Ash says:

It was purposefully chosen, cruelty is the point.

      • Jojo says:

Exactly. What does anyone think either Harry or Willy immediately think of when looking at that photo. Not a random jolly holiday with dad but the holiday when the news of their mother’s death was delivered to them. It’s a cruel choice and, imo, a deliberately cruel choice. Charles is a passive aggressive cnut.

      • Tara says:

Only imagine William & Harry knew if the RF had a hand in her death – what a thread the choice of this picture would be.

  11. Scout says:

I think Charles chose a photo that was during his least scandalous period. No bad marriage to Diana so she wouldn’t be evoked in discussions. No new marriage to Camilla yet. As far as it being the timeframe of Diana’s death….I don’t think Charles even thought about it. It’s a nice pic of just him and his boys.

    • Tessa says:

I think Charles deliberately selected that photo of course he imo realized the implication

    • MSTJ says:

No need to overthink the purpose of including a photo with his two sons. The reason BP did it was to drive engagement on their account. It’s a PR move to drive engagement. A post with only Charles and Camilla and their parents would have been boring. After the boring Trooping the Color, BP needed to do something that would drive interest for the King and keep the conversation centered on the King. It’s how propaganda (PR) works….focusing attention on a topic, message, etc., in this case Charles on Father’s Day….focusing minds and thoughts on the past (dad who tried his best, spent time with his sons) instead of the present (dad who married his mistress and made her queen at a great cost to his relationship with his younger son and his family).

      • Saucy&Sassy says:

MSTJ, I don’t think the reason KFC and Harry are on the oust is because KFC married the Escort and made her Queen. No, it’s the leaking, gaslighting, scapegoating that the Escort, KFC, Fails and Wails did.

    • Lexistential says:

I agree somewhat. I think Charles chose this to gain sympathy for himself- knowing it was August 1997, the point when all irrevocably changed for William and Harry.

In evoking this particular time period, he is using it to work against his horrible image as much as he can. (And for all he wants to erase Diana, he is still using her. Horrible man.)

  12. Becks1 says:

I am sure that picture is meant to send a message, just not sure what message. It’s a nice picture overall, but the August 1997 timing does feel….deliberate. Like, here’s a happy family moment before everything changed. IDK.

  13. Izzy says:

JFC these people… everything is an “olive branch” or a “snub.”

  14. AmB says:

That photo looks like they’re posing for a Sears catalog.

  15. BeanieBean says:

Isn’t it time to stop describing Harry as a ‘wayward son’?? The man is in his 40s!

    • BothSidesNow says:

Agreed!! Harry has chosen his family over the vile, hateful and selfish RF and they simply can’t handle that Harry chose Meghan and his children over them.

As for RF, he’s the wrong person to be giving his opinion regarding KFC’s chosen photo in his post on Fathers Day and there is no olive branch and never has been and never will be.

Harry has been clear with regards to what KFC needs to do in order for their relationship to begin healing and we all know that except those on Salty Island.

  16. lleepar says:

Did it never occur to anybody on that salty isle that loyalty is a two–way street? Harry’s loyalty is with the family where his loyalty is returned.

    • Snoodle says:

That just isn’t the aristocratic way. All loyalty must be given to those above you in the hierarchy, while those below you must eat whatever shit you fling at them with a smile.

MOST aristocratic families do recognize that allowing internal conflict to become apparent to outsiders weakens the dynasty as a whole, though.

  17. SURE says:

In the photo of C, H & W, H is pointing out something to his father and brother. That image of KFC and W not seeing what H sees is so symbolic of their relationship. Perfect photo choice IMO.

    • DM says:

My first thoughts as well. Harry being the only one to be aware of something and pointing it out to his brother and father who don’t seem to be showing any signs of recognition. It should have been on the cover of Spare!!!

      • aftershocks says:

^^ LOL! 🤣🤣🤣😂 Bingo! 🎯 I think you’re onto something @DM. Harry even says in the memoir’s Intro that writing Spare was, in part, a last resort effort to fully point out to his father and brother exactly why he left [the cult]. On the day of Phil’s funeral, the two betrayers had feigned their utter ignorance of the reasons why to exasperated, long-suffering Harry.

  18. smee says:

Looks like H is wearing W’s hand-me-down pants in this photo…

  19. Over it says:

Harry real loyalties are exactly where they should be , with the woman he married and promised to love , respect and honor and stand by through good and bad times and with the children he helped bring into this world with that same woman. That woman name is Meghan and I am going to need these B—chzz to start showing her some darn respect. These people are bat sh—it crazy. Imagine sending a grown ass man a message about not being a grown ass man but to be more like you and be a disappointment to your wife and children. I am glad Harry is Diana son and not Charles . Because Charles as Kaiser rightfully reminds us is a dog-sh-it father and was a dog-ah-it husband to Diana . And I hope Archie and lili never have to deal with his dog sh-it ass in their sweet beautiful lives .

  20. Mslove says:

I agree Kaiser, it is vaguely menacing. It’s almost as if he’s saying if you don’t come back, I’ll finish the job that was started in NYC.

  21. IRONE says:

BP never posted a picture of Charles with Harry on Father’s Day until 2020 ( After Sussexit). In all the years from 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 they have posted pictures of Charles with Philip.

  22. J.ferber says:

Wouldn’t doubt it if someone told me he photoshopped the boys into some Scottish trip decades ago. Would anyone really put that past him?

    • Christine says:

No, I was alive then, and I remember this pic. I have no idea what Chuck is going for, but it feels very malicious.

  23. Saucy&Sassy says:

Well, on a light note: So, take that, Wails. KFC can wear green, too!

  24. QuiteContrary says:

“Happier times”???? The summer they lost their mother???
What kind of a ghoul writes crap like that? And what kind of a father chooses to amplify a photo taken during that time?
These people are the worst. I’m so glad Harry is on a different continent.

  25. blunt talker says:

I think Diana was killed in August 1997-this is menacing-I hope this is not what Charles was trying to imply-this picture will remind Harry that his mother died shortly after this was taken-evil is what evil does.
