Miley Cyrus: Twilight is a cult, y’all

Miley Cyrus sneaks in via the back door of Bergdorf Goodman

Miley Cyrus isn’t backing down from her “I hate everything about Twilight comments from last week. Previously, Miley sat down for some kind of budget interview, and when she was asked about Twilight and New Moon, Miley said: “I’ve never seen it and nor will I ever. I don’t believe in it. I don’t like vampires. … I don’t want anything to do with it. I don’t like the shirts. I don’t like any of it. I feel really lame because everyone’s, like, so excited, and I’m like, ‘Don’t even talk about it.’ ” Most people thought she only hated the whole Twihard thing because it was taking attention away from her. Another theory: she hates Twilight because it’s one of her daddy’s favorite movies. Anyhoodle, Miley has given a new interview where she’s doubling-down on her Twilight hate-on. She’s also talking about how Zac Efron is “the hottest person in the world”. Er…what?

Watch out, Vanessa Hudgens: Miley Cyrus has her eyes on your man.

In a Tuesday radio interview with Sirius XM’s The Morning Mash Up!, Cyrus shares her strong feelings about a fellow Disney star.

“I think Zac Efron is the hottest person in the world,” she gushes. “I really, really like him.”

The 17 year-old continues, “It’s weird because he’s my friend…I could call him and be like, whatever.”

But the Hannah Montana star then clarifies that it’s 22 year-old Efron’s devotion to girlfriend Hudgens that makes him so appealing. “Zac could get any girl…and do whatever, and he is so loyal and a really good friend…He’s just like super good looking.”

Can Cyrus keep her composure around her crush? Sure, she says. “I’m pretty cool,” she jokes. “I’m pretty much the coolest person ever.”

The star is less talkative when asked about her more immediate romantic prospects — like Liam Hemsworth, the costar with whom she locks lips in the 2010 film The Last Song. When the radio host mentions Hemsworth hookup rumors, she says, “I can neither confirm nor deny.”

Later in the conversation, the singer-actress continues to slam the Twilight phenomenon, calling it a “cult.”

“I think it’s bad,” she says. “People get too into it…When guys look at supermodels and they’re like ‘that’s the perfect girl’ that’s what those kind of movies do to us. You know what I’m saying? They’re like thinking that’s what girls should be like and not everyone is going to be Edward [Robert Pattinson], hate to say it.”

[From Us Weekly]

I began developing a theory as I read Miley’s latest mouth-farts. Does anyone else think she’s starting to sound a little Megan Fox-esque? I mean, those Zac Efron quotes are right out of Megan’s playbook (Fox once compared Efron to Elizabeth Taylor). And the whole Twilight hate-on? It could be a way for Miley to get some more attention. Like Megan does – say something slightly controversial and/or stupid about something popular, and wait for the fireworks. It’s kind of sad for Miley… she could be looking up to someone like Taylor Swift instead of trying to become the Budget Fox.

She’s 17, not the brighest bulb. I don’t expect her to say anything of substance.

  2. BitterBetty says:

    She’s just a teenager… give her a break.

  3. Bete says:

I don’t blame her. Vampires are so glamorised in America. The concept of a vampire is based in evil and the storyline of twilight is riddled with questionable content. To try to make it positive is idiotic.
But Miley, with all your money, go and get yourself a manicure. Chipped nail polish…eeergh

  4. Kelly-Michelle says:

Miley’s just jealous of the whole Twilight phenom.

Miley looks likes Madonna’s daughter in this pic.

  5. seven says:

Does she even know what a cult is?

  6. Lita says:

Is Twighlight a cult ye ponder?

    – identified tenets of belief .. Check
    – apparently messianic figurehead (opting for Edward/RP on this one) .. Check
    – idiosyncratic hairstyle of leader (they *always* do!!) .. Check
    – requires payment of money (movie/book sales) .. Check
    – much talk about death, suicide, afterlife .. Check
    – own lexicon identifying ‘insiders’ .. Check
    – craptastic book of beliefs .. Check
    – requires downing of the koolaid to swallow the tripe they spin .. Check

Must be a cold day in the netherworld; I’m going with Miley on this one ;o)

  7. Firestarter says:

Evil only exists if you allow it to exist.

There is nothing cultish or evil about Vampires, especially the Twilight bunch. Vampires, IMHO, are more romantic than evil, and there is no harm in the books, if they actually get tweens and teens to read.

As for Miley’s comments, I pay her no mind. She is a teenager and even with an education, they say stupid stuff all of the time. She is working with being a teen and fairly uneducated (I am assuming she isn’t a stellar student, have no idea one way or the other). She is also trying to take some of the attention off of the hottest thing going and using her comments to keep herself relevant and in the press. In fact, she may not be as dumb as I was thinking! Hmm…
    OH…….
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE AT CELEBITCHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. lisa says:

Many people felt the same regarding the Harry Potter books remember.. I think that if kids are reading OK. But hey she has a right to her opinion. Everyone does not like Twilight. Everyone does not care about the romance of Bella/Edward.. I am one who does not. So I will not see the film. If people are pissy about it then maybe they should check themselves.

  9. ruru says:

I think the comment about it being a cult is not so much referring to the vampire mythos, but the fact that a huge chunk of Twilight fans are batsh*t insane.

  10. birdie says:

Ick. Am I the only one who thinks its creepy that some old radio host is asking a teenager about her love life?

  11. Bill Hicks is God says:

Seems to me the authority of any statement is considerably lessened with a “y’all” at the end.

  12. Goddess711 says:

Somebody please forge some documents or buy this dumbass hick an entrance to Harvard or Yale. This little moron needs the educational equivalent of shock therapy. Her “coolness” wouldn’t get her far and maybe she would realise just how dumb she really is.

  13. crash2GO2 says:

Bill Hicks, I think that was the point. 😉

“…I could call him and be like, whatever.”

    Classic.

  14. ien says:

can we pleeeasse stop with the “shes a teenager, give her a break”
there are tons of teenage celebs who don’t fart out of their mouths every time they speak. taylor swift is only 2 years older than miley, and dakota fanning is 2 years YOUNGER than miley and neither one of them sound like they’re missing brain cells.

  15. Kathie says:

It is an obsession but one that I think is largely harmless. That being said of course it is tripe and the literary/cinematic equivalent of a supersized fast food meal deal what do you expect it to be? Every generation of teens and tweens has it’s obsessions and Miley needs to leave off on this because it is precisely that obsessive bent in young people that caused the popularity of Hannah Montana.

  16. snowball says:

    This:

“But the Hannah Montana star then clarifies that it’s 22 year-old Efron’s devotion to girlfriend Hudgens that makes him so appealing. “Zac could get any girl…and do whatever, and he is so loyal and a really good friend…He’s just like super good looking.”

completely and utterly sounds like a bitchslap at Vanessa. ‘Cause Zac could have any girl..but he’s sort of stuck with the one he’s got because he’s “loyal.” God forbid it’s because he loves Vanessa.

I don’t give her any slack for being a teenager. She’s been in the biz for years and she ought to have enough brain cells to rub together to know when it’s good for your career not to be such a snotty know-it-all.

I do give her a tiny bit of slack for being a mouthbreathing hillbilly, though. No offense to the other mouthbreathers. Y’all.

  17. westender says:

Has anyone been to a “Hannah Montana” movie premiere or concert? They are just as insane as the Twilight followers. Miley sounds a bit jealous of all the attention the Twilight movie is getting. Miley must be saying things like this because her career is not red hot anymore and she craves attention.

  18. Kathie says:

I do give her a tiny bit of slack for being a mouthbreathing hillbilly, though. No offense to the other mouthbreathers. Y’all.

Wow Snow, kinda harsh on your Southern folk aren’t you?

  19. v says:

    maybe it’s because she’s christian ?
what’s her stance on harry potter, any quotes on those movies?

  20. Jujubes says:

I don’t think she bitch slapped Vanessa. I think she just meant that although Zac’s so good looking (I don’t agree, by the way) and can date many girls, he has chosen to “settle down” with one person.
Having said that, I really can’t stand Miley. Her voice, her looks, her singing, her “acting”. Arrrrghhh!

  21. omondieu says:

I really dig that shirt. I don’t dig the fact that her black bra is clearly visible through it.

  22. nyla young says:

you know she was striping necket in the magaziens and drunk driving? I think she’s a hoe!

  23. lambchops says:

She may not be articulate and I do not like her persona, but part of what she’s saying makes some sense. Idolizing an unattainable vampire character is probably not the best ideal for young romantically-minded girls. It’s created a freaky mania that I just don’t get. Maybe you either get it or you don’t.

  24. GatsbyGal says:

I can’t believe I’m agreeing with Miley Cyrus, here. Twilight is VERY cult-like and I truly believe we’ll be seeing its negative influences on our young girls in the coming years.

  25. Izzie says:

For someone who doesn’t like it she’s been talking way too much about it…

  26. Me! says:

Why are her comments describing fans’ rabid devotion to Twilight as “cultish” being slammed as “dumb” or an example of teens saying “stupid things”? I think she’s actually right on with this one…

  27. Sumodo says:

She’s not college material, but she’s right. I try to limit my exposure to vampire and zombie sh*t, however, I cannot resist True Blood on HBO. Anna Paquin is astonishing, though the storyline requires a cult-style handbook to follow.

  28. daisyfly says:

    Okay. She says this:

“People get too into it…When guys look at supermodels and they’re like ‘that’s the perfect girl’ that’s what those kind of movies do to us. You know what I’m saying? They’re like thinking that’s what girls should be like and not everyone is going to be Edward [Robert Pattinson], hate to say it.”

    After saying this:

“I think Zac Efron is the hottest person in the world…”

Her attempt to clarify it by saying it’s because he’s “loyal” is bunk because she adds he “could get any girl”.

She’s a kid so I’ll cut her some slack, but I think we probably should stop asking seventeen-year-olds what they think because usually, what’ll come out is sure to make us shake our heads and question our educational system.

  29. Emily says:

ruru: I’ve previously thought that the phrase “batshit insane” should be reserved solely for talking about Japanese movies, but your comment made me realise that this belief was prejudiced towards the Twihards. Thanks for enlightening me!

  30. Michelle says:

I’m with Miley on this one. Twilight blows.

  31. Goddess711 says:

If Twilight’s a cult then every movie that’s had a good following and sold a bajillion dollars in merch is a cult as well. That would mean Hannah Montana is a cult too, and it’s frightening enough just thinking it’s a way too long phase. That’s the thing: there’s a big difference between a cult and a phase. Vampire shit which came after the Witchcraft shit phase which was just the next phase after Emo shit. Check the teen book section – Witchcraft, Fairies, Vampires. Big deal – definitely not worthy of being lablelled “cult” material.

  32. Emily (Anti-twlight) says:

Actually,i’m with ruru on this one.
Although there are some good people out there, that happen to like the series, there are also some crazy ones.
There have been attacks on some people when they say to the paticurally dedicated ones that they do not like twilight.
    I for one hate twilight.
However,i respect the good people that like it,and don’t bring it up every 5 seconds.
People can be fickle creatures,i’ve seen some go as far to bash Miley Cyrus, because she does not share their view.
I again,am not a big fan or eitheir twilight,or miley cyrus.
But everyone is entitled to an opinion, and everyone whether you be a twitard,or anti-twilight,need to respect that.

  33. Ana says:

    LOL – Bill!!!
I am from the South and try so hard to eliminate it from my vocabulary.
It’s just a habit…and I’m not sure what to say in place of it.

  34. Anj says:

A jealous bitch..who was rejected the role of bella for having horseface and man-voice.

anyway twilight sucks anyways.they are for psychopath girls.

  35. Ana says:

Oh and for those of you that dislike Twilight have you read this? http://theoatmeal.com/story/twilight

It’s hilarious. I’m starting on my book sometime tonight. Will be millionaire soon, y’all. 😉

  36. fizXgirl314 says:

it’s not a cult… it’s just a teen sensation for chrissake… yeah, we’ve never had one of THOSE before *eyeroll*

  37. gg says:

The lady doth protest too much, methinks. Somebody’s jealous.

  38. ashley says:

um, while i don’t like twilight and i do think people (like the women I work with) take it too far with the team edward and team jacob and they are grown assed women, wasn’t the whole Hannah Montana phenomenon kind of cultish too.
Newsflash Miley~pot to kettle…I dub the black.

  39. liz :) says:

    And here she goes again…
So I get what she is saying about that Twilight is not the best movie ever
But Zac Efron “the hottest person ever”
    No he is not
He maybe the cutest girl ever
because to me that guy wears more make-up than me & my friends all together
And if she doesn’t like it & hates the books/movies whatever
Why doesn’t she stops talking about it?!
She just needs the attention, because to me this is her plan of “miley needs to look ‘mature’ so that she can be a sex symbol, y’all!”
But with these comments, she rather looks like a very immature & obnoxious person
Her 15 minutes of fame are over, so why is she still around?

  40. notafan says:

AND YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE STUPID HILLBILLY WHITE TRASH Y’ALL……..

  41. Iggles says:

I don’t like Miley and the hype around her. But I agree with her on this point. Twilight sucks!

I will say it’s sad that three leads are the gaunt and sickly looking Patterson vs an underage kid for the affections of a girl who always looks high. No thanks!

If I was in high school then I’d probably root for Jacob (because I always roots for the underdogs), but I’m not the target audience so whatever. What really disturbs me is GROWN WOMEN reading twilight and arguing about team Edward vs team Jacob. Very distrubing. Lots of older people love Harry Potter (myself included). But the difference is very few of us think Harry or Ron are “hot and romantic!”. We happen to love the STORY, not lust after the ACTORS.

  42. loser miley says:

i think twilight rocks and miley sucks

  43. stinabelle says:

I like how these comments evolve. Regular commenters near the top, Twilight defenders to the bottom. Every single time.

  44. snowball says:

    @ Kathie:

“Wow Snow, kinda harsh on your Southern folk aren’t you?”

Wow Kath, you don’t know where I live, do ya? Did you miss reading up further where it was jokingly stated that adding “y’all” made every comment okay or are you a hillbilly upset because I excused the mouthbreathers but not the hillbillys?

    Tune in your humor station.

  45. kimberly says:

whatever miley . . . you’re just pissed your target audience is no longer “hannah obsesses” and have moved on to another thing of the moment.

Get used to it. Thank Disney that they only shoot a specific number of each kids show and yours should be over.

hope you saved your pennies, let Hilary Duff be a cautionary tale of where your career may take you. . .

bad acting in new moon, wait for dvd.

  46. la chica says:

does this mean she would turn down a part in the movie if it were offered? just wondering.

  47. Rio says:

Don’t make fun of “y’all”, y’all. It’s no stranger a turn of phrase than “wicked” in Boston or “don’cha know” in the Midwest.

  48. Rosie says:

I watched Twilight with my daughter and I can understand the appeal for teens. What girl doesn’t want someone totally devoted to her (although IMO Bella is the most boring character that ever hit the screen) and the whole forbidden love with a bad boy…that’s been in love stories for ever. I get it. I think the movie was very poorly done and not cast well, but that’s just my opinion. It sounds to me like Miley might be a wee bit jealous. Just saying.

  49. angie says:

I’m from the south as well, and y’all is just a contraction of you all. We kind of have our own language, but I think that if I went to say…Minnesota some of their phrases wouldn’t make sense to me. I doesn’t mean that they are uneducated hicks just because they speak a language you don’t get.

  50. serena says:

Zac Efron is hot? Really? +lol+ but has she gone crazy or what? I sort of like her, pretty, not lindsay lohan-style, simple and friendly but now she upset me x°D .. what is this crap?
