North West wants to be ‘a rapper, a basketball player & I’m going to make artwork’

Yeah, I’m not going to clutch my pearls at this. North West, a ten year old, covers i-D magazine as part of their “New Wave” edition. North is the eldest child of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Arguably, North is the only one Kanye actually cares about or spends any time with, as far as I can see. It also feels like North is a daddy’s girl – she loves her dad so much, and Kim (to her credit) has not filled North’s head with all of Kanye’s misdeeds and antisemitic history. Do I think North is way too young for this kind of exposure? For sure. But I’m not her mother and, clearly, Kim feels this is appropriate and so be it. The only positive thing I’ll say here is that it’s objectively stupid to interview a 10-year-old for a magazine cover profile, so i-D kept everything really simple and the interview was short. Some highlights (i-D’s questions in bold):

What’s your favourite song right now?
“Through the Wire” by Kanye West.

Do you like singing? Do you like performing?
Yeah, I like singing. Performing is my favourite.

Do you think you get that from your family?
Sometimes, mostly from me though. And then a little bit of my dad.

What’s your favourite outfit right now?
Vintage T-shirts and Spider sweats.

Who’s your style icon?
Me.

What’s your favourite thing from this shoot?
That I got fries, because I really craved fries, and I love doing hair and I got to do my own edges for this shoot.

Do you like having your picture taken?
Yes. Only when I want to, because ehhh, I don’t want to sometimes. But not by the paparazzi.

What’s the best fashion show you’ve ever been to?
My little sister’s fashion show in her closet.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Umm… The Best Ever.

What’s the best thing about being North West?
I get to play basketball. Everything. I got to go to Halloween Horror Nights.

What do you like to paint?
Everything, except helicopters. Helicopters are so hard because they have all these little lines.

Have you made any more art recently?
Yeah, literally today in art class. But it’s a secret for my mom’s birthday. Last week I finished a landscape and a sunset and I made a little circle thing.

Do you have any other hobbies?
Yes. Going shopping for people. Basketball, but it’s not a hobby, it’s a lifestyle. And I just love basketball so much.

What do you want to be when you’re older?
A basketball player, a rapper, um… Well, when I was seven, I wanted to be a boxer. But now I don’t want to be a boxer. I’m going to do art on the side. When I’m, like, thirteen, I want to walk dogs, to make money to buy art supplies, because everything around here is so expensive. So a rapper, a basketball player, and I’m going to make artwork that I sell. Also, one day I want to own Yeezy and SKIMS, and I want to be a business owner.

[From i-D]

Granted, there are some smaller women playing college and pro basketball, but North will probably be in for a rude awakening when she’s like 16/17 and she’s barely, like, 5’6”. Kim is very short and Kanye isn’t tall, meaning North has short genes and they will affect her future in basketball. Still, if she loves to ball, then she loves to ball. I think it’s cool that she’s a little jock and a little artist. That’s righteous, and that’s how it should be – no 10-year-old should have a reasonable life plan, and it’s cool that Kim is encouraging her kids to have all kinds of hobbies. It’s hilarious that North is already plotting to take over her parents’ businesses too.

this is ridiculous. why are they trotting her out already? what are they selling now?

    her edges do look good.

    • LooneyTunes says:

“Her edges do look good” took me out for some reason. 🤣 Seriously, though, who is checking for North West like this? Cue Blue Ivy’s interview in 3, 2, 1…

    • Popsicle W says:

Agree. I hate when parents do that but everything about North says she wanted to do this. She sounds completely comfortable expressing her own opinion and the questions she received were respectful and appropriate. She is famous and if I were a kid her age, I would have loved to read an interview from her.

    • Delphine says:

It may be ridiculous but I loved her answers so much. Her confidence is fantastic. She’s her own style icon, her favorite fashion shows are in her little sister’s closet, and she’s ready to take over her family empire. I love it.

      • Jasmine says:

I don’t like that she’s so exposed but I smiled at the interview. She sounds normal, like a kid. A very confident kid lol but mmm her parents..

      • Agreatreckoning says:

My heart melted when the response to her favorite fashion show was her little sister’s closet fashion show. D@mn. It took me back to when I was little and some of my older siblings found us being entertaining to be around.

    • Booboochile says:

This baby hair edges nonsense is played out.

  2. TurbanMa says:

She’s such a cool kid. Way cooler than me. I love that she’s taking over both businesses and commenting on how expensive everything is. This is just like wholesome and I love it.

  3. Ariel says:

    While it’s a little horrifying – the commodification of a 10yo.
The interview was sweet. And she seems relatively well adjusted for the child of wealthy and famous people.
And I am impressed that her mom shelters her from truths about her dad.
She’ll figure that out herself as she gets older.

  4. D says:

This makes me so uncomfortable. She’s 10! Why would readers of i-D Magazine need to read an interview with a 10 year old. It’s exploitation. Sure, Kim is OK with it, but that doesn’t mean much. She seems ok with a lot of questionable things.

    • Her again says:

D, I completely agree. Don’t we have enough examples of how destructive fame can be with young people who grow up with it??? I truly hope that North doesn’t start viewing fame as a necessary factor for happiness, although her family certainly seems to, so I’m not optimistic. And Kim gets few accolades from me for parenting. I don’t even watch KUWTK, and it’s obvious to me how obsessed Kim is with her looks, and with maintaining fame, and THAT is what she is modeling for North. Great job, Kim 👍

    • Tiffany:) says:

      I agree, D.

  5. Nikki says:

No parent should let their 10 year old be publicly interviewed. A child can’t understand things following them for life, and to publicize a child and establish a public persona for them before they can decide is not right. Not safe with all the weirdos either,,,

    • Polly says:

      THIS!!!!!!

    • MaryContrary says:

This-omg. If Kim wants to continue to over expose herself, fine, she’s an adult. But a child should NOT be in this position. (Of course I also think that they’ve let her too many adult things over the years and it’s ridiculous.) Let her be a kid and not in the public eye.

  6. Normades says:

This is bad of me to say but she seems to have an even too healthy ego? Like she must be surrounded by people who tell her all the time that she’s the most amazing thing ever and will grow up believing it and being an entitled nepo kid.

    • It'sJustBlanche says:

I’m getting a strong Lourdes (Madonna’s daughter) vibe and I’m not sure why. Maybe that’s good? Madonna’s daughter seemed to turn out okay.

    • Ameerah M says:

She’s a little brown girl. The world will humble her enough. Trust. Let her have an inflated ego while she’s TEN

      • Beverley says:

Thank you for speaking truth to power, @Ameerah M. Soon enough, the world will come for this brown child, as it does for us all. She gets to feel great about herself until the world tries to take joy from her.

    • Kate says:

Disagree. I thought it was wonderful to see how happy she is with herself, especially growing up in a family that might make you expect she’d be extremely self-conscious about her appearance.

      Who’s your style icon? Me.

What three words would you use to describe yourself? Umm… The Best Ever.

Kids SHOULD think they are great. Love that she expects to have to work to make money to buy her art supplies, probably a hard line for super wealthy parents to balance when it comes to teaching their kids the value of a dollar.

    • Normades says:

Sorry I knew that comment wouldn’t be popular. I know she’s ten but I see so many non famous kids grow up thinking they are the specialest snowflake and freak out when they realize they’re not. She will have life passed to her on a silver platter and I hope she will realize she started on third instead of hitting a home run. So many nepo kids don’t.
But you’re right she’s only ten. My favorite answer was that her little sister’s fashion show was her favorite.
All in all I do think Kim is doing a good job.

  7. It'sJustBlanche says:

With such massively trashy parents, you hope everything turns out okay for this kid.

  8. Elo says:

It’s silly to publish this but she seems very normal. This was like reading an interview with my 10 year old. He too has short genes and wants to be a basketball player.

  9. wordnerd says:

    “A rapper…an NBA player…man, at least a dude with a car!”

  10. Bettyrose says:

I’m thrilled that North is thinking about college and pursuing her own interests. I hope that doesn’t get squelched.

  11. MsIam says:

I thought this was so funny, “When I was seven I wanted to be boxer, but now….” Kids are so great, the move from seven to 10 seems so enormous to them, whereas to adults, its still a kid. I wish her the best. I think the difference with North is that her family is not looking to her to be the breadwinner like in the case of a lot of child stars. I think that makes a difference psychologically, so I hope Kim and Kanye don’t start pushing her out there.

  12. Eating Popcorn says:

While I don’t like children in the public eye, all these dreams sound like a normal 10 year old.

  13. Angie says:

Literally relieved to see the basic questions & her kid answers. So sweet about her sis’ fashion show in her closet! And earning money for art supplies. I love that she has loves like basketball. I’m relieved. Weird emotion, I know. But she’s 10 w 2 parents & families whose choices I’d never ever make.

  14. Serena says:

She’s a cool kid but all I see is another nepobaby in the making..

Another rude awakening will be when she realizes she’ll have to divide Yeezy and Skims with her brothers and sister.

    • Micha says:

She likely won’t , I don’t see any indication that the other children get the same treatment. She’s the only one Kanye knows exists and she is Kim’s BFF.

      • Serena says:

I mean, sure, but legally, unless they leave it only in her name, it won’t be doable. And I highly doubt they will do that, especially Kim. The other kids are still small, that’s why she’s getting more attention, imo.

    • Normades says:

I doubt there will be much of Yeezy when they become of age.

  15. paintybox says:

North’s a cutie and I thought her answers were cute. Hopefully they won’t continue to platform her into some kind of tween moneymaking monster career. The Kardashians are such an insanely greedy family. Please just let the kid live, they have enough money already for all of them to live in opulence for the rest of their lives.

  16. Tiffany:) says:

“What three words would you use to describe yourself?
    Umm… The Best Ever.“

    Yep, that’s Kanye’s kid. Sigh.

  17. taris says:

    “who’s your style icon?”
    “me.”

    lols

  18. lucy2 says:

Shame on this magazine for interviewing a 10 year old child. If I were her parent, I would not be making these choices either. I feel bad I even read it.
I hope she and her siblings have as happy and private a childhood as possible.

  19. rawiya says:

I find it funny that whenever there’s something positive to say about the kids, it’s always KIM who’s doing a great job, but whenever there’s something negative to say then it’s THEY are bad at this. Funny.

Anyway, this is Kanye’s child 100%. The responses — pure old!Kanye:
“Who’s your style icon? Me. What three words would you use to describe yourself? Umm… The Best Ever.”

Bless her. I wish the best for her and her siblings.

  20. Trishelle says:

We are never going to be rid of the Kardashian Klan are we? This is so sad for the this little girl. Let her be a kid and not just another income stream and means for attention.
Wonder how soon this poor child will go under the knife?
