Luca Faloni: Prince William wears our pieces because he doesn’t want to be ‘flashy’

In September, we learned that Prince William had quietly hired a personal valet over the summer. Now that he has access to Duchy of Cornwall money, William wants to be well-dressed. No, scratch that, William wants to style himself like his brother. I think Prince Harry is well-dressed these days, now that he pays more attention to designers and style (because of Meghan). But the thing is, Harry already elevated clothes long before Meghan. He has a good body and great shoulders – clothes hang and drape on him the right way. Harry has BDE, and he can make discount stuff look high-end. William is the opposite of that – he makes expensive clothes look downmarket, nothing ever fits him properly and I’m tired of seeing that man’s moose knuckle. So, yeah, his valet has their work cut out for them. In any case, designer Luca Faloni has given a new interview about how William wears his knitwear and linen shirts all the time. Lord, why would you want your label associated with William??

Luca Faloni on when he realized William wore his pieces: It all started “a few years ago when one of my customers, who is a keen polo player and moves in certain circles, sent us a picture of Prince William and asked, ‘Is he wearing your shirt?’” Faloni, 39, explains. He didn’t think about it too much “until I saw the prince on TV on a tour of southeast Asia and said, ‘Wait a second, I think he is wearing our shirts.’” The future king’s online shopping was confirmed when Faloni’s cashmere sweater and denim shirt made it into the prince’s family Christmas card photograph in 2020.

Faloni’s brand doesn’t have any logos. “They don’t want to be flashy. If you’re Prince William, you don’t want 60 million people in England to know that you bought a £10,000 jacket from an expensive brand. You look for something that is discreet and classic.” So Luca Faloni is not fashion? “It’s classic but different — without going crazy.”

It’s not crazy expensive. A cotton polo shirt is £125, a wool blazer £675, chinos £150 and a linen suit £925. Faloni says he wants to offer value because some of the big brands have become “greedy” and raised their prices to “absurd” levels. He knows what he’s talking about. He grew up in Turin and bought his clothes from the local shirtmakers and tailors, who make some of the most stylish collections from the best cottons, wool and cashmere “for a fraction of the price of the big brands”.

The royals could go Italian: Could both the future queen and king “go Italian”, rather than stick to Savile Row or French couture as their forebears have? Faloni’s “refined, elevated classic and casual staples” would certainly work for both of them, he says. “Times are changing.” But one thing he will never make, not even for William, is a tie. “I hate ties. All other clothes are functional. You wear knitwear because you’re cold. But a tie doesn’t make any sense. It’s all about pretending to be more elegant. It’s useless. I will never make one.”

[From The Times]

Yeah, I’ve never paid attention to the labels William wears because, again, he doesn’t wear clothes well and I always figured that most designers didn’t want to claim him as a client. Basically, it sounds like whenever William is wearing a linen shirt or knitwear, it’s probably a piece from Luca Faloni. Even if I want to give William any kind of style credit, it wouldn’t be for his more casual looks – he arguably looks much better in his Savile Row suits than knitwear and linen. Oh, well – not everyone can wear Dior.

I’d be so embarrassed to be associated with Bulliam the Incandescent in any shape or form.

I’d much rather duck, run, and hide before admitting to having any kind of business relationship.

And nothing Harry wears or has ever worn should be considered flashy.

    • Lemons says:

This clearly isn’t geared towards those with an ounce of style. But I’m sure all the finance bros will eat this up.

  2. MaryContrary says:

That’s so funny-I’m currently in London and walked by that store yesterday and thought, huh-never heard of it. It just looked like expensive menswear in neutrals. I certainly don’t think of William as being a style setter so whatever.

  3. Eurydice says:

Lol, another excuse for why nobody cares about William – it’s his wardrobe!

    • Chica says:

King Felipe is the best dressed royal male out there. Don’t know his tailor or brands but he WEARs the clothes. Could wear a paper bag and make it stylish. WIlls cannot!

  4. SussexWatcher says:

I wonder if the designer received some back door payment (no pun intended) to come out with this statement. Because, yes Kaiser, who on earth would want that walking, fugly nightmare to be associated with your brand?!

And I thought the Leftover Royals were only supposed to wear British brands. Isn’t that what we were told a millions times? Will we get some breaking royal protocol articles now?

Give it up, Pegs. You’re no more a sexy DIFL than you are a global statesman.

  5. Lili says:

There is only one time I’ve seen Willy look good and that was the suit he wore for the unveiling of his mother’s statue

  6. Who cares what Peg wears. It’s usually wrinkled and doesn’t fit well. Isn’t his wife the one being flashy with all the name brands she wears that look like crap on her? If he is trying to compete with Harry on even this he will fail. If he is letting it be known that expensive clothes will not be worn is he letting it be known to Can’t?

  7. Barbara says:

He looks like a frumpy, dumpy, boring old man. Nothing looks tailored or expensive. Seriously, the man made a cashmere sweater look like bargain basement acrylic.

  8. Afken says:

This is hilarious. They’re trying to make William a style icon now? And why aren’t they berating him for not wearing British???! Isn’t that how it’s supposed to go?

    • ML says:

This, Afken! H&M got sooo much backlash for not (always) wearing British designers and now we’re hearing that Peggington is being fashionable with Italian clothing?! He’s the future effing king.

  9. Tarte au Citron says:

Pairing jumpers under his blazer is such a dowdy, frumpy thing to do. Chaz and Phil would NEVER. But they were interested in looking good, Peg never has been.

  10. Mia Thermopolis says:

The more that I look at that photo the more I think they were all photoshopped together. Her hand on Louis relative to her body isn’t correct. There are other details too that makes me think this was several photos edited together. It’s a very good photoshop, whoever did it is skilled.

There was a photo a few years ago that was absolutely Frankensteined together, he was added into the photo. It was the one where they were sitting in grass and he was kneeling, and was a bit apart from everybody. I am 100% sure of that one, it was way more obvious.

    • Dara says:

Is that supposed to be her hand or William’s? Honestly it looks like a giant man-hand to me, but either way it’s off. Both one of them would have had to dislocate their elbow to get their hand in that spot.

  11. Maxine Branch says:

No matter the cost, it takes a certain body type to pull off style. Harry has it in droves, the slant of his shoulder the slimness of his waistline and his sweet strut. He walks as a confident man and he displays the mannerism of being comfortable within his own skin whether he is dressed up or down. He has what you call sex appeal and he wears clothes well. Some people have it and some do not. William comes across as a doofus, he looks clumsy and always wears trouser that shows his manhood. Willam is not what you would think of re sex appeal or well dressed. He just does not have the body type or mannerism typically associated with being well dressed or groomed. Harry has the “it” factor.

    • Lurker25 says:

To be fair, Pegs DID have the right body. Look at pics when he had hair, late teens/twenties. Long legs, broad shoulders, tall. Both brothers wore their clothes really well. Both wore pants really well too – had the long Diana legs.
I think Pegs ran into trouble when skinny pants became trendy. His pants got slimmer in the legs but I guess they didn’t want the FFK at the time prancing around in tight pants so the seat and crotch (ew) area were somehow looser. And we got moose knuckles as a result. (ew ew!)
Then as he got older you can see the slouching shoulders from hours of watching footie on the couch, the upper body slump as his abs softened with beer, age, lack of exercise.

Harry continued to just wear straight pants and exercise the whole time.

Re-reading this, I’m coming off like some creepy royal stalker hovering with magnifying glass over every photo! I just notice clothes, that’s all, I swear!

  12. Jais says:

I genuinely wonder if William works out regularly. Maybe he does some? Feel like if he upped his workout game and massively worked on his posture, he could improve things. All of which would take effort and discipline which means it’s unlikely to actually happen.

    • Deering24 says:

Heh–there are a lot of things William could do to up his game. But he figures he’s the LeBron James of FFKs already, so…😂🤮

  13. Advisor2u says:

Oh dear, all these puff pieces to put Willy in the ‘sexy-bachelor-market’ are not doing it, are they. Who even cares about him?
Harry is charming and walks with a confident swagger with his slightly bowlegs. Thát Willy won’t be able to imitate. That’s his mum’s genes/charm coming out.

  14. Nic919 says:

It is interesting how Harry’s style improved once he met Meghan, but William has been with Kate for over a decade now and his style still remains bad. It is another sign of how kate is bad at styling in general and how they are not in synch as a couple.

    • JT says:

William didn’t care about his style before which is interesting because he actually had access to all of the money, while Harry was shopping at TK max. It’s just another thing he’s jealous of. Harry’s style is being written about in Vogue, GQ, and Harper’s Bazaar. His coronation outfit was announced in a press release by the Dior designer himself. Nobody cares about William’s wrinkled clothes.

    • Deering24 says:

I don’t like Kate, but it’s not cool to hold a wife responsible for how her husband looks. Wives are not moms. If hubby hasn’t or can’t get his mess together, that’s on him.

  15. Lau says:

I would like to know who thought this brown/green shirt was a good idea because William just looks dishevelled and the stains just complete the look.

  16. Mary Pester says:

William could spend thousands on a suit and it would still look like a dish rag on him. He has the build of a neanderthal with his knuckle dragging and his ENOURMOUS Adams apple. Plus look at that jaw, he probably cracks walnuts with it at Christmas!! No Billy boy, you will never have the physical impact of Harry, but there again, you’ve never had the same impact as Harry on anything you say or do. Keep bathing in your jealousy peg, your temper will burst through for everyone to see again again very soon

  17. Amy Bee says:

Was the Times paid for this article? Shouldn’t they be screaming that William is spending his money on clothes?

  18. BlueNailsBetty says:

“and I’m tired of seeing that man’s moose knuckle.”

    SO SAY WE ALL.

  19. Rea says:

The clothes are expensive.. and not flattering.

  20. Deering24 says:

““They don’t want to be flashy. If you’re Prince William, you don’t want 60 million people in England to know that you bought a £10,000 jacket from an expensive brand…”

Um…er…so if you don’t want people to know about your label, why do this interview? It couldn’t be because this is yet-another-way The Times wants to slam H&M, could it? 🤮

  21. Saucy&Sassy says:

It would be interesting to see what would happen if Wont just forgot about his brother and let a taylor get hold of him. If he would get well taylored suits, etc., and bettered his posture, I wonder what he would look like. Just get his own style that didn’t always include the sweater. The sweater ages him.

I honestly don’t know if he could pull it if off, but he ought to at least try.
