Tatler insists that Princess Diana was not a tragic figure whatsoever, okay?

I had to stop watching The Crown Season 6 just as Princess Diana and Dodi were making their way to Paris on what would have been Diana’s final 24 hours. I eventually returned to it, but it was painful to see her last days dramatized in a way I wasn’t expecting. So many bad decisions by everyone involved, from the monarchy to Diana to the al-Fayeds to the paparazzi. Because of The Crown and everything else, Tatler asks: who owns Diana’s legacy? The problem is, Tatler can’t help but carry water for the institution which was culpable in her unhappiness and her death, so it’s not like this is actually some high-minded exercise. Some highlights:

Diana conspiracies: Conspiracy theories roared: Was she pregnant when she died? Was she engaged? What was being covered up? Mohamed Al-Fayed stirred the pot, and Piers Morgan said Diana sold many more newspapers dead than she did alive. All theories were debunked by friends, such as Rosa Monckton, who appeared stone-faced and exasperated in a 2003 interview with Martyn Gregory. ‘[It’s] complete falsification,’ she said. ‘She was such an extraordinary woman that people find it very difficult to believe that she could have died such an ordinary death.’ Now, as the Prince of Wales calls for the cancellation of his mother’s notorious interview with Martin Bashir, and the King’s friends dub The Crown ‘trolling on a Hollywood budget’, the fight for Diana’s legacy has reached fever pitch.

Diana’s friends hate The Crown. Diana’s friends won’t watch it. ‘We all feel the same way,’ says Mary Greenwell, her former make-up artist and confidant. ‘I’m not interested in that kind of portrayal of someone who was globally recognised and loved. It’s a cheap way of revealing someone.’

What’s the point of all of this Diana dramatization? What is the point? Money? Prolonged collective therapy? Addictive re-traumatisation? What’s left is a tragedy fetishised in cycles; a private and public image at total odds. ‘Everyone above a certain age won’t hear a word against her,’ says my royal source. But ‘with great mythical figures, from Grace Kelly to Marilyn Monroe, the details get forgotten and the potency of legend overtakes the actual texture of life, because the outer image is what the public see and what they will not be dislodged from seeing’.

Diana was a canny operator in her own right: In reality, Diana had agency – a lot of it. ‘Diana had a focused grip on what she wanted to achieve,’ says my source. ‘She was as ruthless as she was charming.’ In her savvier later years, Diana would tip off newspapers herself. She held lunches with journalists at Kensington Palace, and the editor Richard Kay is supposedly one of the last people she called before she died. Tina Brown wrote in The Palace Papers that Diana invaded her own privacy: ‘the most unforgettable “stolen” snap from Diana’s last fateful holiday was the famous “kiss” picture of her in a clinch with bare-chested Dodi Fayed… It was she who tipped off Italian lensman Mario Brenna – to send a taunting message to the real love of her life, Hasnat Khan.’

Wait, what?? And yet the dramatised version of her as a tragic figure defies hyperbole: a blueprint for the Hollywood-minded Duchess of Sussex who, with the Duke, ended up in their own ‘near catastrophic’ paparazzi car chase through the normally gridlocked roads of Manhattan this summer. But it’s not how Diana saw herself: ‘She was happy,’ says Adorno. ‘She was one of the most amazing human beings; she was always easygoing.’ ‘I don’t think she was tragic at all,’ says Greenwell. ‘We can’t say there wasn’t tragedy in her life. But she was a great mother, loved by everybody who knew her.’

Gen Z’s fascination with Diana: This last season of The Crown might be the last stand: Gen Z – the first generation with no living memory of the princess – has adopted Diana’s legend in an altogether different way. She is a niche, kitsch figure. Their image of her is neither landmines nor Panorama: it’s the sports leggings and jumper of her post-Charles era. The Instagram account @ladydirevengelooks (114k followers) is their hub: Julia Fox wearing a Diana corset; Diana shooting a submachine gun; the Revenge candle for sale. She is almost a fictional character and the epitome of what the kids call ‘hun culture’.

Oh, I guess Kate is Diana’s legacy??? Diana’s really was another era. Nicholas Coleridge agrees: ‘Diana brought a big splash of accessibility to the Royal Family. That was her legacy. But I would say that the present Princess of Wales has pretty much replicated all that, improved upon it, and made it more modern and authentic. The Diana years feel a long time ago now – there have been six prime ministers since her death – and the new Queen and the Princess of Wales have, between them, more than filled the void.’ Is it asking too much to now let that legacy rest in peace?

[From Tatler]

WTF is this article, really? “A blueprint for the Hollywood-minded Duchess of Sussex who, with the Duke, ended up in their own ‘near catastrophic’ paparazzi car chase…” Tatler is suggesting that Meghan is so desperate to be tragic and dead like Diana that she faked the paparazzi incident which saw Meghan, her mother and Harry seek refuge in a police station to stop the onslaught of paparazzi? And while I agree that Diana had a lot of happiness, joy and agency, it absolutely feels like a lot of people have a vested interest in rewriting her story so that Diana’s significant pain is erased. Being used as a broodmare by a cruel philanderer took its toll on her. The lack of support she received from the institution destroyed her. And no, Kate hasn’t actually replicated anything about Diana.

… unless we count bows & polka dots.

Honestly, tho, she still looks fierce in that fit! She just wore clothes with an air and a confidence that even if they look dated today, she still slays. Kathy could never 🙂 It likely helped that she was a dancer and held herself so gracefully.

Tatler is totally offensive. Some losers and their family believe all you need is a title, no work necessary. Spending money on yourself and posing for photos is not work. There is no comparison to Diana, to achieve absolutely nothing in twenty plus years is nothing to admire. There is nothing redeeming about K’s behavior, it becomes more and more vile as time passes. She could have made a difference, but she has been too busy gorging on her self importance to notice anything else.

  2. JaneS says:

Diana was a naive, sheltered 19 y/o when she was fed to The Firm.
Stuck in a loveless marriage, used as a brood mare to birth the FK and Spare.
Married to Charles, who she learned was still involved w/Camilla even during the engagement, etc.
On and on the years of unhappiness she endured, we all know the truth of how the BRF treated her.
Diana is and was beloved for the work and heart she showed for those in need.
Diana was more worthy to be Queen than Charles has ever been worthy to be King.
    Team Diana. Always.

The very mention that Kate is Dianas’ legacy is beyond belief.
Diana was a strong person. She crawled out from under those royal bastards, adored her children, etc.
Kate is a light weight want to be compared to Diana.

Keep Dianas’ name out of your mouth! You lying SOBs.
Decades after her death, the gutter “press” continues to use Dianas’ memory to make a buck.

Kate is an extreme embarrassment to women everywhere. Do nothing, done nothing and proud of it. Having a child is not exceptional or unusual, anyone could have done it. She manipulated her way into the brf. Kate is absolutely nothing like Diana. Her masculine body, her lack of empathy, her aversion to any work other than self indulgence, her inability to speak, her lack of manners from her self appointed superiority, extreme lack of style, her lack of elegance, her exhibitionism, supposed racism, are all nothing to envy. Claiming Kate is similar to Diana is delusional. Diana had a beautiful soul.

The establishment keeps trying to get us all to “move on” from Diana. But at the same time, here she is on the cover of Tatler. There’s a reason that Diana still sells magazines and gets clicks online, and it doesn’t have all that much to do with her jeggings and sweatshirts. I thought the Diana episodes of Season 6 of the Crown were actually very good. I have digested all the books and articles and documentaries and movies about her life during the summer of 1997, and I felt that the show handled almost everything with restraint and good taste.

  5. Becks1 says:

Of course she’s a tragic figure in many ways. How can you look at pictures of her and not think of how her life was cut short so dramatically? She was leaving the Windsors behind and moving onto the next stage and she never quite made it. Of course its tragic. I mean I don’t even like seeing her wedding pictures, knowing what is going to come next for her with the Firm and Charles/Camilla etc.

Saying shes a tragic figure doesnt mean there wasn’t anything good in her life, or she wasn’t happy or that she didn’t love her children or have friends.

But considering how she died, yes, it does give a sense of tragedy to her entire public life.

    • Christine says:

All of this. The fact that any person could write “Conspiracy theories roared: Was she pregnant when she died?” in 2023.

Ask me if her life was tragic. I will say look at the sentence above. It’s not shocking that Harry and Meghan are committed to doing better by Princess Diana.

  6. Jais says:

Dear god. This article makes me angry. Words used to describe Diana in this article: savvy, ruthless and invading her own privacy. GTFOH.

  7. GDubslady says:

I can literally see why the Bible calls the Western Nations and monarchies that come out of the Roman Empire, the Beast. These people are cruelest creatures on the planet capable of the worse sins imaginable and perfectly willing to rationalize all of it. Only the truly wicked can engage in this level of gaslighting about Princess Diana’s life. She was and is nothing more than a piece of meat to consume and spit out as they see fit. Eat or be eaten is their creed.

  8. Jaded says:

Tatler’s sunk to a new all-time low. “[A] blueprint for the Hollywood-minded Duchess of Sussex who, with the Duke, ended up in their own ‘near catastrophic’ paparazzi car chase through the normally gridlocked roads of Manhattan this summer.” Sure, you have to include Meghan in a derisive swipe at a truly terrifying experience that could have injured or killed them just to get clicks. And Kate has not replicated ANYTHING about Diana other than wardrobe cosplay, and to compare them is to compare a Ferrari to a Ford Fiesta and an insult to a woman whose legacy of charm, compassion, charisma and strength will never be forgotten.

    Fuck you Tatler.

  9. Amy Bee says:

This piece reads like it was written by a deranger.

  10. JaneS says:

The majority of Dianas’ adult life was international news.
She was the most photographed woman in the world, tracked by paps, lied about, gossiped about endlessly in life and now even decades after her death.

Diana was the biggest draw the BRF has ever had, next to the long reign of QE.
QE was like the wall paper, she was always there, an institution.

Charles, William and whoever might still be in The Firm will always be beholden to Diana.
The goodwill the public still has for Diana, rubs off toward William especially.
And he is smart enough to try to use it to his advantage, he almost has to capitalize on it.
He has so little warmth or charm of his own.

    Down with the Monarchy. ASAP.

Diana died in August 1997, her divorce from Charles finalized in August 1996. That now always reminds me how the Palace green-lighted 1 year press onslaught for H&M. I am sure, Harry made the same inference. There is a reason H&M are very careful with their words and actions. It is terrifying your abusers / executioners have the power to tell the world that what is happening isn’t happening, you are paranoid to think it is happening. That’s why it is weird for me to read that people demand content from them because it was too long ago they released something. People still behave like H&M owe something to the public to entertain them while they are probably still scared for their and their children’s safety.

    • Christine says:

Agreed. It has to be terrifying for Harry and Meghan, and I hope we never see Archie and Lili again, in photos. Shut up, everyone who wants a Christmas card with the kids. At this point, I want Guy the beagle to be in the Witness Protection Program.

  12. Eurydice says:

Who owns the legacy is a question asked about all iconic and conveniently dead celebrities. People who knew Diana may have very different views of who she was, and different from who Diana said she was. One friend will say she was happy and easy going. Her children will say she was sad. Diana said she was bulimic and threw herself down the stairs. Who knows – she’s dead and people can say whatever they want about her.

If the legacy of Diana lives on, it will be through her sons who knew her and were influenced by her, not their wives who are late to the story. Meghan and Kate are their own women with their own agendas.

  13. sparrow says:

I still love Tatler. For it’s Kate the Great article. It was a watershed moment for Kate’s idea of royalty trumping aristocracy. I admire them for publishing it and mostly standing firm against the backlash.

  14. Concern Fae says:

Followed Diana since she was the mystery blonde on the River Dee watching Charles fish. Like many abused people, she had both healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Unfortunately, she was never really able to get away from the Palace and the media attention.

  15. Mary Pester says:

WTAF. I don’t believe they quoted Tina bloody Brown, she has been called out so many times. Megan has NOT tried to emulate Diana you pathetic peice of sht, the car chase was real!! And Diana has left a legacy of caring for the sick, removing the stigma of aids, removing land mines with the halo trust, your not fit enough to write her name, let alone say it. And do tell us just where she supposedly got all these reporters numbers from, and how are you going to back that up.
Copying outfits, wearing buttons and bows, does not make Kate the next Diana, and never will, because Diana had two special traits that Katie keen will never have, a work ethic and GENUINE Compassion. Sorry three, and Diana, treated her children as her children, not photo or marriage props.

    • Unblinkered says:

I’d add that Diana must have had incredible self-discipline that saw her always look fabulous, no way bleary-eyed and puffy faced from drinking like KM. And no need of fake hair.
To suggest that KM is her legacy – nothing could be further from the truth.

  16. Chantal1 says:

What a bunch of bs! And of course they had to take a swipe at Meghan in this hit piece masquerading as revisionist history. Hey Tatler, Diana’s legacy is and belongs to her sons (too bad Willy sucks so badly). And no, we won’t move on bc you and your evil media and RF accomplices won’t let Princess Diana rest in piece. So GTFOH as you all continue bashing and trashing the only 2 beautiful and charismatic women in that Rotten Family that generate clicks and income for the hateful tabloids. Diana remains a popular and inspirational figure so deal with it.

Oh and thanks for quoting Piss Moron as saying that Princess Diana sold more papers dead than she did alive. Now back that bus up and throw him under it again!

  17. Lau says:

Kate probably ordered that last bit because there is no way to compare her to Diana.

  18. equality says:

Good grief. So every minute of her life had to be sad to call her life a tragedy? What is tragic is that she died when she was just getting the happy life and some agency and that she still had so much to do in life, like raising her children. It is tragic that her children were left without her at critical times in their lives (even though they were above 5).

  19. Interested Gawker says:

“Tatler is suggesting that Meghan is so desperate to be tragic and dead like Diana that she faked the paparazzi incident which saw Meghan, her mother and Harry seek refuge in a police station to stop the onslaught of paparazzi? ”

This is exactly the narrative the engineers of that harassment of Meghan that night wanted to stitch her up with; that she had the hubris to organize her own “Diana Car Chase”. Harry being with her that night made that angle go up in smoke and they switched to mocking them about privacy. They would be writing articles in that vein to this day if they had their way.
