The final Mean Girls musical trailer actually includes the music: will you watch it?

The final trailer for the upcoming Mean Girls movie has dropped! Unlike the first trailer, this one makes it a little bit more clear that it’s a musical, even if we don’t quite see much of the musical aspects of it. To be clear, this movie is not a remake or reboot of the original 2004 film but rather a movie based on Mean Girls: The Musical. It’s a movie based on a musical that’s based on a movie. Tina Fey wrote both the movie and the stage script. Her husband, Jeff Richmond, did the music and Nell Benjamin (the Legally Blonde musical) wrote the lyrics. In the final trailer, we get glimpses at song and dance numbers and a sampling of the “Meet the Plastics” song. Renée Rapp, Angourie Rice, Auliʻi Cravalho, Tim Meadows, Tina Fey, Jon Hamm, and Busy Philipps are also heavily featured in it.

Are you ready for it? The final trailer for the upcoming musical movie adaptation of Mean Girls dropped Wednesday morning (Jan. 3) and it hints at some big, bold song and dance numbers. The clip opens with perpetually clueless principal Duvall (Tim Meadows) welcoming curve-busting new student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) to school.

Cue an ominous image of The Plastics leader Regina George (Reneé Rapp), whose entrance finds her standing with arms crossed, backlit by a blood red light in the middle of the school hallway as the singer who starred in the Broadway musical version of the high school drama — based on the 2004 film of the same name — intones “my name is Regina George.”

A quick-cut montage takes us from a boy drumming on the lockers to George inviting “loser” Heron into her car as a fellow student warns, “Regina George is a scum-sucking life burner.” We get a glimpse of thoroughly unqualified health teacher Coach Carr (Jon Hamm) giving the kids a lesson on the dangers of female “whoremones” to Ms. Nordbury’s (Tina Fey) horror and a brief glimpse of an uptempo dance break.

The second half of the trailer is cued to Megan Thee Stallion and Rapp’s “Not My Fault,” and Duvall reading from the series’ infamous “burn book,” which reveals that one of his students keeps her secret vodka stash inside her inhaler. Plus, we get several cringe shots of Mrs. George (Busy Philipps) just trying so hard to be a cool mom.

Mean Girls hits theaters on Jan. 12 with a cast that also includes Bebe Wood and Avantika as the other Plastics and The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Chris Briney as Regina’s ex, Aaron Samuels, with Heron’s pals Janis and Damian played, respectively, by Auliʻi Cravalho and Jaquel Spivey.

I don’t know if we needed a new version of Mean Girls, but it looks like it’s going to be a fun, January movie. I’m absolutely going to see it, even if I have to go by myself. I know Rapp played Regina George on Broadway and I think she’s going to be perfect in the movie. Come to think of it, Regina is kinda like a high school version of Rapp’s character Leighton on The Sex Lives of College Girls. On a similar note, Philips, also perfectly cast, appears to be playing an even cooler ‘cool mom’ version of her Girls5Eva character, Summer. I’m here for all of this.

I’m not too familiar with the musical, but I’ve heard good things about it, so I plan on giving the soundtrack a full listen-through over the next week or so. I love the original and wonder how much of this version will be updated to reflect 2024 jokes and values. Oh! I also wonder how many of actors that played students in the original cast will make cameos in this movie. Those are always fun Easter eggs. The new Mean Girls opens in theaters on Friday, January 12.

I went to the tour version of the musical and will definitely get the same group of friends together to see the movie. Something fun to look forward to!

I saw the tour version a few years ago. Wasn’t sure what to expect but It was fantastic and an awful lot of fun.

I don’t even know if the musical made it to Australia, I definitely haven’t heard any songs or really anything about it at all but I’m peak millennial so willing to head in blind to check it out purely based on the IP. (I’m part of the problem!)

Will watch it when they get the DVD at my local library. These days I’m either opening night at the theater, wait for the DVD, or catch the streaming when staying at my sister’s.

So funny they hid the fact this was a musical because I totally hated the idea of a remake. Once I found out it was a musical through social media I became interested. Same with Wonka. No interest in taking the kids until I found out it has music. Does anyone else feel like the musical aspect makes them go?

  7. Carol says:

It looks like they cut a lot of the songs from the original musical and changed some others from ensemble sung to Regina only. I don’t care how good Renee is, this isn’t supposed to be the Regina show. My interest is waning quickly.
