Margot Robbie wore a custom Armani to homage ‘Superstar Barbie’ at the Globes

Margot Robbie is still doing her Barbie-gear for red carpets and… it’s fine. It’s even kind of cute. I thought it would end once the promotion was over, and she would wear regular gowns for the awards season, but no. The Barbie archives are at her disposal, and I guess Margot and her amazing stylist Andrew Mukamal are simply having too much fun with it. So they went to Armani and asked them to customize the “Superstar Barbie” dress from a 1977 doll. It worked perfectly at the Golden Globes. While Margot didn’t win a Globe for acting, she picked up an award as a producer. Sidenote: I’m getting increasingly upset with people overlooking what Margot did as an actress in Barbie.

Selena Gomez also wore Armani. Something nice: you could tell that she loved this and she felt comfortable. Something not nice: it’s a bad dress.

Greta Gerwig didn’t go for a Barbie look – this is fine with me, but it is very severe.

This Barbie outfit was the based on the one my very first Barbie had, so I was SO happy to see it.

I like Margot’s dress here a lot but I am also looking forward to the end of her Barbie red-carpet era, lol. But she’s been having fun with it and looks great.

One of the things I like about the Globes is that they do honor comedic/musical roles differently from dramatic roles (for acting), because I feel like good comedic acting is really really hard and the Oscars just hyper focus on the heavy serious roles. So yes, I do wish there was more attention on her acting in Barbie because she just nailed it – it wasn’t just the costumes and hair etc. Her facial expressions, her timing, etc was all perfect.

I very much agree on her acting, we re-watched it over Christmas and I felt she completely nailed it.

      • Smart&Messy says:

I agree, she nailed it and that should be recognized. But I am so happy that she is recognized as the driving force behind creating another influencial movie and female role.

Her hair looks like the wind ruined it a bit, but her face could stop traffic so who cares.

I would like her to either be crystal barbie or peaches n cream Barbie and then I don’t need to see her dress as Barbie ever again.

I would love to see a Barbie exhibition of the dolls and the outfits that Margot replicated.

I like the Barbie dresses brought to life, Margot looks fabulous. I can’t think of a pre Barbie look of Margot’s that looked better

I’ve also been surprised at the ongoing (fabulous) Barbie costuming but I now assume she will keep it up until the Oscars.

Something nice- Selena always looks great in red.

  6. Jais says:

So I reallly dislike Selena’s dress. For me, it’s the asymmetrical skirt. If it had just been a long skirt, I would’ve thought it was interesting. But the busy top and the asymmetrical skirt was too much together.

I have enjoyed all of Margot’s Barbie fashion, and this is no exception.
Selena’s looks uncomfortable and a bit unflattering.

I like her wearing all the Barbie clothes. She perfectly looks the part, it’s fun for those of us who played with the mini versions of them and I can’t see her ever having any regrets about doing this extended fashion show when she’s an old lady. She’ll probably look back like, ‘Man, that was silly and fun!’ and after the award season she’ll move on to some different style. But she’s still selling it, even now.

Agree that she gets forgotten in the acting recognition for Barbie. Margot is a talented producer, an essential driving force for the project, but she also gave a touching and entertaining performance as a literal doll without a personality. People have puffed up Ryan Gosling and Greta Gerwig far more than Margot and America, who were the face and emotional heart of this super successful film, and it’s weird that the female leads get kind of sidelined.

I like the continued “Barbie” looks – it’s possible that this look was made for the press tour that was scrapped due to the strike. Or maybe Margot and her stylist are just having so much fun with the looks and want to carry it forward so long as Barbie is in contention. I don’t expect her to dress like this forever, so let’s just enjoy it!

Oh wow! I love Selena’s look. Fun and funky! And Margot…. Nails it every time

    • Queenie says:

I like Selena’s look too! The same old gets so boring. I love that she did something fun and different.

  11. Grant says:

I think it’s perfectly appropriate for Margot to lean into the Barbie-core look (the same look that she singlehandedly returned to the cultural zeitgeist) one more time for award’s season. It’s an appropriate way to celebrate the highest grossing movie of the year IMO. Kind of a full-circle moment. I can’t wait to see what she wears to the Oscars. If she doesn’t wear something fabulous and PINK I’ll be very disappointed.

“Barbie” deserved so much better last night, and so did Margot.

Barbie did deserve so much more recognition at the GG. Margot has been amazing. It was her idea and initial pitch to do the Barbie movie. The whole film would have fallen flat if her performance, look and sincerity did not work or hit a false note. It simply would not have been such a big hit and would not have had the word of mouth it enjoyed. A wonderful bonus is finally her fashion has been gorgeous! She seemed to have hit her stride fashion-wise with these beautiful Barbie inspired outfits.
