Ayo Edebiri wore The Row to take home a Critics Choice Award: Miami Vice chic?

Last night at the Critics Choice Awards The Bear won Best Comedy Series while Ayo Edibiri and Jeremy Allen White took home best actor and actress in a comedy series while The Bear won best comedy. Ayo also won at the Golden Globes and I think she’s a shoe-in for the Emmy tonight, but we’ll see! She gives such excellent speeches that you can tell she’s also a writer. Her fashion has been fun to watch and she really takes risks without veering fug at all. Last night she wore a fab white oversized suit by The Row. She looked like a new detective on Miami Vice introduced in the third season to spice things up. I would love to see more actresses just wear oversized suits to things. (Also see: Carey Mulligan at the BAFTA Tea Party.) Ayo’s stylist, Danielle Goldberg, knows what she’s doing.

Speaking of Carey Mulligan, she was in a kind of severe black Armani with a sequin v-neck. This is very Disney villainess. I think Carey tries to fly under the radar with her fashion. I don’t know how to explain it except to say she looks like she’s wearing a uniform at some events. Carey was nominated for Best Actress, for Maestro. That category surprisingly went to Emma Stone for Poor Things.

I love Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and her giant white tuxedo gown is so much fun! I don’t know if another actress could pull this off, but she is. Aunjanue was nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series for Justified: City Primeval. That category went to Sarah Snook for Succession. I watched most of the first season of Justified and Aunjanue stole every scene she was in. (The villain was so cartoonish that I didn’t finish.) Also she was so hot with Timothy Olyphant! Aunjanue is in a new Ava DuVernay film, Origin, with Jon Bernthal. We’re going to be seeing much more of her and it’s about time.

Keri Russell was also nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her work in The Diplomat. I watched the first episode of that and could not get into it, but Keri always delivers regardless. Keri was swimming in the this bizarre white sack of a Stephane Rolland gown with ruffles on the front. What even is this dress? Why does it have a turtleneck? Keri consistently takes fashion risks and only sometimes do they pay off.

Presenter Angela Bassett was gorgeous in a black and silver sequin off the shoulder Pamela Rolland gown. As I always mention, 9-1-1 is coming back on Thursday, March 14 on ABC. I can’t wait!

Ayo looks so cool, but I’m not sure about her shoes. Carey Mulligan is very petite and has small features so I think the dress is great and doesn’t overwhelm her. I love the slightly evil vibe. Angela Basset is a goddess.

Ayo looks good in the white suit. Saw pics of her at another event in a pink dress and I loved it. It’s fun to see what she wears.

Keri’s gown looks like the sort of thing that was probably a beautiful moment on the runway in the context of the whole collection (which I haven’t seen, to be clear — I’m just thinking out loud) but doesn’t translate well to “real life.” Still, I admire that she seems to wear things she likes and is comfortable in!

There’s a cute picture of Matthew Rhys fluffing out her train.

And dropping this here for anyone looking for something to binge – The Diplomat was EXCELLENT. I’m really hoping we get another season because it was one of my standout shows last year.

A second season was confirmed in November! No date set though.

The Diplomat was so fantastic! It is a really smart, adult thriller. Keri Russell goes from being frumpy to funny to so, so intellectually gifted all in the same scene. I really wanted her to win. Great, great binge watch. I cannot wait til it returns.

AET is often the scene stealer in most things I have seen her in. She and Timothy O. were off the charts sexy together! Wow. I needed to fan myself. LOL.

Keri was terrific in The Diplomat. Not quite up there with her career best work in The Americans though.

I didn’t think Ellis was as great as anticipated in Justified. The entire series was a let down but disagree with the writer that Boyd Holbrook was too much of a cartoonish villain. Other than Vondie Curtis Hall’s work, Holbrook was the standout. I thought Ellis’ least convincing scenes were with Olyphant, the two did not really have the kind of spark and chemistry that was necessary to telegraph their connection given how quickly the writers brought the characters together. It was a bummer and frankly boring. The first time the series decides to finally cast a black actress in a lead role and they dress and style her like Olyphant’s grandma. Every outfit was atrocious and ill fitting.

I’ve been an Aunjanue fan since The Mentalist. I’m glad to see her these last few years in so many acclaimed roles.

Origin is one of the movies, like American Fiction, which should’ve been released next year. The strike has cause a real dearth of movies this year. That would’ve benefited these smaller films which are getting lost in the shuffle.

Oh, I love the tuxedo dress! Striking, fun, and flattering. Plus, could be comfy- nothing being squeezed or pushed to a dangerous place. She looks fantastic

I love Ayo, her suit is cute but I would have put a brooch or two on the lapel, different shoes and don’t get hate me…. but her brows are too “heavy”. Whoever is filling them in needs a lighter touch.

I like Keri Russell’s dress. I’m into unique shapes so it’s right up my alley.

I like Carey’s dress – and I think this does what Christina Ricci’s look tried and failed to do. I like the idea of Aunjanue’s tuxedo look but the fabric looks cheap and wrinkled. I’m not in love with Ayo’s look but I get the vibe.

  8. Yup, Me says:

    I’m excited to see Origin.

Aujanue’s journey episode in Lovecraft Country was my favorite of the series. I want to experience a whole Womanist Afro-Futurism/Magical Realism movie and series now.

  9. AngryJayne says:

I love Ayo’s suit and Keri’s dress would’ve been stunning if it didn’t have that frivolous ruffle detail down the front.
Tim Gunn wasn’t wrong – less is more.

  10. Rnot says:

While I will never agree that The Bear was a comedy (?!) I’m delighted to see Ayo get recognized. I think she has the potential to make a whole career just out of conveying emotions with her eyebrows. She has such an eloquently expressive face.

    • Ameerah M says:

It wasn’t. But these things are often chosen strategically so that shows have a better chance of winning awards. The show’s producers decide which category to submit their shows for.

Carey Mulligan on the red carpet gives me the same vibe as Cillian Murphy, she’d much rather not. But she makes the effort whereas Cillian does not
