The Green Goblin from RuPaul’s Drag Race stole the show at the Emmys

Did you spy the little Green Goblin at the Emmys this year? The delightful creature attended as a Season 15 cast member from RuPaul’s Drag Race which won Monday night. I came to Drag Race late, despite years of pleading from my mother, but caught up through dedicated binge watching during lockdown. I’m still watching, because I need that color in my life. And speaking of, the queen behind the green was Princess Poppy. I admit, I didn’t recall Poppy by name alone and had to look up that she was eliminated in the third episode last year. But that’s why showing up as a goblin was a brilliant move on her part, because we sure know who she is now! Poppy spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the inspiration for her chartreuse ensemble:

Someone call Spider-Man! An unexpected villain was spotted on the red carpet at the 75th annual Emmy Awards on Monday night. The Green Goblin walked the red carpet at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, turning heads with the bold look.

Dressed in a halter gown by Bryn Costume that matched its green skin, the goblin also sported white long hair, and oversized prosthetic ears and nose.

Fans were eager to know who was the Green Goblin, and turns out it was none other than RuPaul’s Drag Race star Princess Poppy. The drag queen joined fellow cast members at the glamorous event and seemingly enjoyed causing a stir.

“I wanted to do the exact opposite of what is expected of you when you go to an event like this. I wanted to take decorum and turn it on its head,” Poppy told Entertainment Weekly at the ceremony.

“Mainly I wanted to be a troll-slash-hag. I wanted to be so shocking that you just have to turn and look at me — in the worst way possible,” Poppy continued.

Please don’t say the costume matched “its” green skin. “It” is a “her” and she looked resplendent in that Elphaba, lily pad frog couture. Yes, she could have done with a tiara or some kind of headpiece with the way her hairline was pulled back. And yes, a stronger lip color would have added some depth to the makeup. But we’re really just splitting mole hairs here. Also, I applaud any gal who wears low heels or flats to an award show. Let’s reclaim our foot comfort ladies, trolls, and hags!

If you didn’t catch Ru’s acceptance speech, take a listen below. Ru preached “Knowledge is power — if a drag queen wants to read to you in a library, let her!” Ru also won Best Host for the eighth year in a row, making history as the most decorated host across Emmys’ 75 years. Season 16 of RuPaul’s Drag Race is currently airing on MTV.

“because I need that color in my life” YAS! There is no comparison to even the most quirky cracker shows. These queens have soul. 😀 And it brightens your day.

I just saw a TikTok where the creator criticized that this costume is anti – s*m*tic.

I love Drag Race. It’s a joy to watch!

Princess Poppy looked awesome in her goblin chic. But can we talk about Sasha Colby’s gown? Gorgeous!
