Tiger Woods surrounds himself with sycophants

2009 Australian Masters - Day 4

In the wake of the epic Tiger Woods scandal, of course people are going to start pointing fingers, looking for someone other than Tiger (or, in addition to Tiger) to lay the blame. We’ve already heard some of this – basically, Tiger’s management team were all blaming each other for the horrible way this story was handled. Now it’s not as if hiring a really good publicist would have helped that much, but it’s pretty clear Tiger has surrounded himself with sycophantic yes-men who want him to have every sketchy woman his heart desired, even if it meant back-door deals with media outlets. Anyway, this new report from The New York Daily News is about that, and there are some new sketchy details of just who was enabling and how:

They’re the loyal friends who kept Tiger’s secrets, warned him to be more careful – and stood by him even after his reckless behavior was exposed.

For more than a decade, the golfer’s social life has revolved around a handful of college chums, a childhood confidant, a fiercely protective agent and a smattering of sports figures. Few had access to the inner sanctum. Those who did knew better than to gossip about Tiger Woods’ less-exclusive club of sexy women.

Some of the buddies who knew about Woods’ cheating told him he was flirting with disaster – but he didn’t listen until it was too late.

“A lot of us who love him saw this coming,” a friend who’s known Tiger since he was 18 told the Daily News. “We said, ‘You’ve got to be careful. It’s really getting too raggedy.’ In his own mind, he may not have thought he was doing anything wrong. He was under a lot of pressure. He thought he was just letting off steam. He thought of it as a perk.”

Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren, reportedly knew nothing about his infidelities and was stunned by the breadth of his betrayal. Still, the parade of busty blonds who emerged after a post-Thanksgiving car crash sparked questions about Woods’ marriage that couldn’t have been a surprise to his closest male pals.

High-school pal Bryon Bell, president of Tiger Woods Design, probably knew the most, reportedly helping with logistics for more than one affair, multiple sources said.

“He would coordinate my flight itineraries and make sure I was all set up to see Tiger,” admitted mistress Jamie Jungers, 26, told The News. “He was a very nice guy.”

Another source said Bell contacted Hollywood madam Michelle Braun to set up “introductions” between Tiger and her “models.”

“He was definitely the middleman for Tiger,” the source close to Braun said.

The roster of Tiger’s celebrity friends includes retired basketball legends Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley – who was around when Jungers partied with Tiger, she claimed.

His nonfamous friends “are a bunch of nice guys, but their behavior has been a little sophomoric,” said an insider who spoke on condition of anonymity. He said that aside from Bell, Woods’ closest friends are former Stanford teammate Jerry Chang and post-college pal D.J. Hanlon. Chang roomed with Woods during competition travel in the mid-’90s and worked for Tiger’s foundation before pursuing an MBA. Notoriously media-shy, Chang did not returns calls.

“Tiger will always just be one of the guys to me,” Chang told a newspaper in 1998. “He has a different life than most of us, that’s for sure. But he’s not bigger than life.”

Woods spoke glowingly of Chang’s “serious” demeanor when he chose him as a pro-am tournament partner in 2000. “He won’t get in the way. He won’t be chit-chatting or talking,” Woods said.

Hanlon is rarely mentioned in connection with Tiger, but they met in the late ’90s when Hanlon’s dad was president of the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas, a source said.

“It was through Butch Harmon, Tiger’s coach,” the source said, explaining Hanlon was working for his dad when Harmon opened a golf school at the Rio. Hanlon did not return calls.

As the scandal explodes, all three friends have maintained the code of silence that has long characterized their relationship with Tiger. One Stanford-connected friend said that speaking out, even in the golfer’s defense, would be friendship suicide.

“Jerry and all of us are dealing with the same thing,” the friend said. “This is Tiger’s thing. We can’t comment.”

[From The New York Daily News]

It will be interesting to see who from the inner circle ends up selling their story. My guess is whoever gets fired first will be the one to tell all. And you know someone is getting fired.

Meanwhile, there are two more sketchy reports – first of all, Radar (working from some British sources) reports that Elin Woods might be seeking sole custody of their two children because she’s so pissed at him and his crazy Ambien sex. Second story: Page Six reports that Tiger loved strip clubs, and would go to them all the time. His favorite thing in the world was to go to a strip club and act “innocent” like he had never been to one before – which seems like a weird fantasy/fetish to me, but whatever. The full Page Six report is here, and it’s gross.

‘Logistics’ = Today’s euphemism for ‘Let’s come up with ways for you to betray your wife and flagrantly disregard your marital vows so that you can fuck as many skanks as you want to’.

Big surprise that he was surrounded by sycophants (sarcasm)…they weren’t going to risk being ejected from the billion dollar brand machine that is Tiger or lose the perks of being his friend.

  2. Guest says:

    he definitley has major issues!

  3. diva says:

I am on Tiger overload, this story is getting overplayed. I’m ready for the divorce battle to heat up, that is going to be way more interesting.

  4. Jill says:

I wonder if Elin was aware she was a trophy wife. If not, it’s heartbreaking for her and her wonderful children. I never know how much gossip and speculation to believe, but it’s hard to imagine that she was insincere about her devotion to him. She’s been called a really good person and I believe that, partly because I know how decent my own Norwegian relatives are (very similar culture to Swedish). Sad.

  5. Goddess711 says:

Why wouldn’t Elin get sole custody? What’s changed? He’s never around to be with the kids, it’s still status quo for her and the kids. She’s been the sole custodial parent all along, she’s not pulling any punches by making sure she continues to take care of the kids’ welfare and best interests. Tiger’s dick is his only best interest. The guy clearly doesn’t have the capability to think beyond his *needs* and *perks* – why should he get any custody and the kids be raised by nannies/subject to the constant parade of whores this guy has? He’s not going to change, he jutifies his asshhole behavior – Elin is smart to take the kids, leave the country and raise them in a stable atmosphere. A few kajillion of Tiger’s money will prevent them from being gutterkids. That’s sound and reasonable thinking from a woman who’s been subjected to this kind of shock and infidelity. The kids wouldn’t be safe or taken care of left in his care and they didn’t ask for any of this. Why should they suffer?

I think Elin had no idea what she was getting into. I hope she meets and re-marries a loving European man and starts over. Tiger can remarry to the kind of woman which seems more to his liking.

  7. Birdie says:

@ The pickle, European men can be just as sleezy as Americans!

I completely agree with above posters, I think Elin could have been suspicious of Tiger, but his lifestyle made it easier for him to lie to her about his whereabouts/who he was with/what he was doing. She was busy with two small children, and could not babysit him while he was on tour. I’m sure she ultimately chose what most of us would and trusted her husband and was fully shocked the night of the infamous accident.

  8. Raven says:

Like father, like son, apparently. The Daily Mail is reporting that Tiger’s father ran a brothel during the Vietnam work for soldiers and dumped his wife for a woman he met overseas, who is Tiger’s mother. I can’t wait for the biography on Tiger and his family.

CrazyDays reports that Tiger and a bunch of guys/chicks took off to the Bahamas on his boat over the weekend. Anybody seen Hooker on land recently?

  10. KansasRefugee says:

    Raven-

Thanks for posting. That DailyMail story is fascinating.

I gotta believe this is also a classic problem of overvaluation of men and undervaluation of women under patriarchy.

You can see progress in that our current war effort (as opposed to the VietNam War) has many, many women serving along with the men so the “intoxication and intercourse (with prostitutes)” R&R is not (I hope) even a consideration on the agenda. While we may still be lower status, and in smaller numbers in positions of power and influence in public life, we are making progress.

I hope we keep working to slay the beast of patriarchy. At some point the tide will turn away from patriarchy and to women having an equal say in what goes on in the world. I can’t wait!

  11. Wresa says:

Lol, LolaBella– “Transgressions”, “Logistics”, is like there are “scientific” terms for “Cheatology” now!

  12. WTF?!? says:

KansasRefug, it’s the religious and cultural beliefs of the region in which our soldiers are currently fighting that has made old-style R&R uncommon, not the presence of women. Women were all over the Vietnam, Korea and WWII battlefields and military outfits in every capacity except fighter, that didn’t stop it then.

Tiger is grown and can make is own choices, genetics is no excuse.

  13. gregorio118 says:

The amount of self-serving speculation and judgement going on in the previous posts is mind-boggling. This woman, Elin, married a professional golfer, period. She knew his lifestyle going in. To say he was “never” home. The ignorance of some of you ladies out there. How long does a golf tournament last? A week, 2? This woman lived in a mansion, had cars, clothes, jewelry, servants and children. Tiger was the one on the road, away from his family, and living out of a suitcase. Don’t kid yourselves ladies, you’d swap lives w/ Elin in a New York minute, no matter how many women he played around with. As long he loved ONLY you always came home to you and the kids!

  14. Goddess711 says:

@gregorio118 – you’re a deluded moron. She’s giving up all the mansions, cars, jewelry and servants and getting as far away from Tiger and his whore crowd as possible. Multiply those tournaments, the charity tournaments, the endorsement work, his “wind down” trips and practice as well as balancing 16+ whores. He didn’t love ONLY her and didn’t come home to her and the kids. You’d best catch up on the threads – the women on the board generally think Tiger and pigs like him are garbage.
I pray that someday when you grow up and really believe you’re in love that you are in Elin’s place with a woman who is so desperately unsatisfied with YOU and ONLY YOU that she has multi-year relationships with multiple men and unprotected sex while you stay home believing she’s at work believing she’s faithful to you. I truly wish this wonderful experience on you – then you can have an opinion.

  15. gregorio118 says:

Hmmmm…I find it interesting that with all the talk of Tiger violating his marriage vows, he at least is talking of trying to save his marriage, while Elin is going for the MONEY and trying to keep him from his children (moving to Sweden). So much for her “devotion”. No wonder America’s divorce rate is so high! Also, not a word about the “other” women who all knew this man was married…they could have said “no Tiger, you’re a married man. One man with apparently low impulse control and 16(?) women who are saving text messages and voicemails and shopping them to tabloids. A rich powerful man having his life destroyed by (himself) and a bunch of no-name tramps. This is an age-old scenario…rich, powerful men and young beautiful women. Why are you surprised?

  16. mags says:

    @kansas,
unfortunately this stuff is still all alive and well. near all the U.S. military bases here in Korea they have “juicy bars” where women from the philipines are lured to Korea with promises of singing jobs and then forced to work in these “juice bars” where their job is to flirt w/ GIs to get them to buy them juice and run up tabs. if they don’t get the GIs to buy enough then they have to make up the amount in a “bar fine” which means they have to prostitute themselves.
the army tries to discourge this behavior, on the surface. but there’s too much of a “boys with be boys” apathy.

  17. For Sooth? says:

    Sell their stories???!!!!!!
They need to take the perp walk of shame, at the very least. Most of these guys need to be in jail for pimping and prostitution. Hey, if Heidi Fleiss went down for it so should theses guys, and gals.

  18. Lita says:

Don’t worry gregorio, there were plenty of women on here that agreed with your views. You really do need to read more than one Tiger thread to get a platform from which to make sweeping and incorrect generalisations about posters here; plenty was said about the multi-tarts and getting past infidelity.

At the beginning I’d say thread-concensus (albeit many not regular posters) was more to your views. Which is to say that anyone (I guess you mean both genders?) in a relationship with a wealthy person in a high adrenalin job should understand, despite any promises, that part of the deal is gross sexual and emotional betrayal. Your unique addition to this is further that all women (only women this time, note) are prostitutes that will doormat themselves for money (heh – your world view reads like hentai!! Giggle!).

The good news is that you could find someone with the same low expectations from a relationship as you. The scary news is that you’d better get cracking on making enough money to keep whatever avaricious harpie you end up with. Chop chop, get to it!

PS: your point that Tiger is trying to save the marriage and Elin is just bailing has a deep, cavernous flaw in it. Can you pick it before your bedtime, you child?

  19. Bete says:

The more images I see of Tiger, the more annoyed I am with that one discolored tooth he has.
Quickly Tiger! Fix it before your funds are sucked dry from the divorce.

  20. I can’t wait for the biography on Tiger and his family.
