The Crown ended with a whimper, in my opinion. The final season, which dropped last year on Netflix, promised to “end on a high note” as it covered Queen Elizabeth II’s 2002 Jubilee and then-Prince Charles’s 2005 wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles. Peter Morgan totally bungled it, which sort of shows that, actually, all of those stories are “too recent” to be dramatized. Perhaps it also showed that it’s difficult to dramatize a powerful royal family while actively trying to “be nice” to them too. Well, the flop final season didn’t stop the BAFTAs from nominating The Crown for eight TV awards. The BAFTAs organize two separate ceremonies, months apart, for film and television, and the television awards are being held on May 12. According to the Ephraim Hardcastle column, BAFTA president Prince William will skip.
Prince William, on light duties for the time being, might be glad he can swerve next month’s Bafta Awards. Netflix’s dramatisation of Windsor family life, The Crown, is up for eight awards, with nominations for Dominic West (who played William’s dad); Elizabeth Debicki (his mum); and Lesley Manville (great-aunt Margaret).
Steve Coogan is nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Jimmy Savile in The Reckoning. Savile once gave Jim’ll Fix It badges to William and Harry. The prince might have found it difficult to dispense gongs.

While I don’t doubt that William isn’t eager to mingle with actors from The Crown, let’s also point out that he’s never, ever attended the BAFTA TV Awards. Since becoming BAFTA president, he only shows up half the time to the film awards and never the television awards. Personally, I believe William only bothered to go to this year’s BAFTAs because Prince Harry had just visited their father and William wanted some attention. He got it and it was awful. That’s probably a factor too – no one wants a gaffe-machine like William there, making more inappropriate comments to young actresses.

For this I can see why it would be awkward to attend and sit amongst people who have just acted as you.lol
He skips it most years so no change – lol
Encourage him to go! We got at least a week (bad) press about him last time he went. And it was unsderstood that he commanded more attention than the celebrities. lol
The Crown being nominated is absolutely not the reason he’s not going. His terminal case of laziness is more likely. I have to wonder why does he always look so grumpy? Owns a fleet of 100k cars and motorcycles, uses helicopters like scooters to get around to his various large homes. Has a 30 room mansion in one of nicest areas of one of the worlds major city, and a press that is HIGHLY invested in giving him daily reach around. Must be nice.
It sounds like he’s not going because he’s lazy but the Crown gives him a convenient excuse.
Well after his fiasco at the film awards, I’m sure the other attendees are breathing a sigh of relief.
Word.
There’s no point in them announcing every time William won’t be attending something – whatever it is, we can assume he won’t be there.
No point, save to shame Billy Boy and highlight one of his biggest negative points, the laziness.
In how many new ways can they make William not wanting to work “news?” So tedious.
Yeah, William has never attended the BAFTA TV awards. Perhaps he thinks television actors are not famous enough to mingle with.
He’s not going because the mean actresses didn’t get his clever jokes the last time and besides that nobody has even thought to make him bespoke velvet slippers for the occasion.
All he seems to do is get sloshed and watch TV, you’d think he would want to go. I never realised that there was a seperate BAFTA TV award! Excellent promotion of one’s patronage there, Prince Billy Idle.
And I’m so sorry, but he looks so g’darn ugly & boorish in that main photo. Urgh, those poor ladies having to endure his tone-deaf braying and stupid dad jokes.
Still too lazy or wasted or guilt-ridden to be seen at an event?
Soon the public will be clamoring for proof-of-life regarding Baldilocs.

Steve Coogan as Jimmy Savile — of course!
William isn’t attending, he has never attended, so why is the fail even writing about it?
they get paid by the word, so needs must! (they really do get paid by the word! probably explains why it’s so repetitive, haha.)
I’m confused. I saw a video of the Crown memorializing QE2 when she passed. Was that not part of the original broadcast?
