Drew Barrymore has two dogs, four cats, a bearded dragon, a fish and a snake at home

Drew Barrymore is nothing if not extra, so of course she has a veritable menagerie of pets at home. Currently her animal household consists of dogs Douglas and Lucy, four cats, a bearded dragon named Jeremy, a fish, and a snake named Cecil that her daughter Olive won at a raffle Drew hadn’t even realized she’d entered. So Drew is a fitting spokeswoman to partner with Ring for their new Pet Portraits campaign. From now until June 14, Ring invites pet parents to share a Ring-captured photo of their pets on social media with the hashtag #RingPets, and Ring will donate $10 for every post to the ASPCA (up to $100,000) and to local animal shelters (up to an additional $400,000). Start posting, people! Let’s get these shelters funded! To promote the campaign Drew recently spoke with CNN about her lifelong love of animals:

The actor, producer and daytime talk show host is a pet mom to quite a crew: two dogs, four cats, a bearded dragon, a fish and a snake named Cecil, but with the “c” pronounced like a hard “s” as a snake would hiss.

Barrymore adores animals. She said she wept the most writing her memoir “Wildflower” when she shared a story about her beloved dog, Flossie, who lived to be almost 17.

So, it made sense for Barrymore to partner with Ring for a new campaign announced Monday. “Ring Pet Portraits” invites pet parents to join the company in raising funds for animal shelters in need by sharing their favorite pet videos and pictures.

When people share a pet video or photo on Instagram or TikTok using #RingPets through June 14, Ring will make a donation to support ASPCA and local animal shelters across the US.

Barrymore even filmed a commercial with her dog, Douglas, in support of the campaign (Jeremy, her bearded dragon, makes a cameo) in which she has to explain to her pup that she can’t submit his photo because he’s a “nepo puppy.”

She recently lost her golden retriever, Lucy, a month ago, an experience Barrymore said “was so hard.”

“The whole show built like a memorial wall to her, which was so sweet. ‘Cause everyone in the building was so affected,” she said. “When we all started in Covid, we weren’t allowed to have guests or people. So, I would bring the dogs and they just made everything feel so much safer and cozier.”

Barrymore has been connected to animals almost since the beginning.

She began her acting career as an infant and her first commercial was for a Purina puppy chow when she was a toddler. As a young adult she shared her home with cats and now as a 49 year-old mother of two young daughters her pets are a big part of the family.

“There’s just this like, unspoken relationship that you have this connection, this constant companion, this love that is just so profound,” Barrymore said. “My dogs sleep in my bed with me and so do my cats and it makes me feel like a whole human being.”

Oh Lucy, rest in peace and play on that celestial farm you’re on now! My Girl, the 12-year-old chihuahua-dachshund mix I have the pleasure of sharing my life with, has been in and out of the vet for tests this past week. She’s as unbothered as ever, but I’m increasingly anxious over the prognoses. Reading this I was like, “You hear that, My Girl, Lucy made it to 17! You can do it too!” And for the record, yes of course My Girl and I sleep in bed together; it is after all her bed.

Is Drew often cringey as an interviewer? For sure. Did she make a self-inflicted mess of scabbing during the WGA strike? Without a doubt. Is it hilarious that the premise of the Ring commercial has a Barrymore nixing their pup’s modeling career out of nepo concerns? Yes, for those of us who know her lineage. Has she become the “single animal lady with two kids?” Absolutely, and she’s self-identified as such, proudly. Have I lost the concluding statement for this rhetorical device? Apparently.

She’s cringe AF but I like watching her and enjoy her.
She is so cringe and over the top it feels authentic to her and genuine.

I think part of why I enjoy her is because she for awhile there looked like she might not overcome all her baggage and substance abuse. So it really makes me happy to see she made it past that.
So many child stars don’t make it past that.

My beautiful girl cat went over the rainbow bridge suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday. The vet thinks a blood clot hit her heart or lungs. She went from fine to dead in less than an hour. It was pretty traumatic. I hope My Girl is well and lives a long and lovely life!

I 100% support anyone who has the time, space and funds to adopt a bunch of animals. So many animals need homes, why not have a menagerie? (As long as they are taken care of, not hoarded or used for IG clout.)

Sending love and sympathy as you mourn your dear girl. It’s always too soon, but especially when you’re caught off guard. ❤️‍🩹 May her memory bring you comfort.

While I agree with the general sentiments expressed in this article, and as someone who appreciates Drew but still is aware of the occasional cringe factor…I have to say I am kind of over the use of the work “extra” as a descriptive word for women. Maybe it’s just the circles I move in but I don’t hear it applied to men much if at all and it seems to be the current socially acceptable way to keep women in their place and mindful of not taking up too much space.

One thing I like about Drew is that as a women she gives me courage to feel my feelings and and be myself without worrying about negative perceptions of female behavior (too talkative, too emotional, too much…). If I’m extra people are free to go and look for less.
